Data science can be defined as gathering insight and information out of data. It is the science of everything associated with data: creation of algorithms, software, tools, and techniques, mathematical/statistical theory and practice of analysis, theory and practice of visualization and presentation, and data engineering.
In Southern’s B.S. in Data Science program, you’ll begin learning data science during your first and second semesters. These classes introduce you to Python programming and the fundamentals of data science. You’ll complete upper-level coursework covering a variety of topics from computer science and mathematics/statistics including data mining, machine learning, web and database development, linear algebra, Bayesian analysis and decision making, time series analysis, and non-parametric statistics.
As society becomes more and more reliant on data, opportunities for skilled data scientists increases. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 19 percent increase in the total number of data science positions by 2026, with entry-level positions paying between $50,000 and $75,000. Google, Amazon, Siri, and Netflix all use data science. Within Connecticut, high-tech/data corridors run through the state, servicing sectors such as medical care and research; pharmaceuticals; compliance management systems; insurance; and more.

For the primary logo, the main goal was to keep it simple, but also had elements that highlighted the Data Science prgram. The bar graphs were added to represent data, while the arc was added for a sense of unity and community. To implement “Southern Connecticut State University,” a line was added to separate it from the logo to not disrupt it. The colors chosen are the Southern blue to connect with the university and yellow to pop out.
For the secondary logo, it was important to make a more simplified version of the primary logo in case of an abbreviated version. Therefore, “Data Science” was shortened to “DS,” and “Southern Connecticut State University” was changed to “SCSU.” The bar graph was taken out because it would’ve overcomplicate the design too much. Only one color is used in the logo because another color would also overcomplicate the simplified logo.
When using alternative colors, any colors are acceptable. However, no more than one color can be used. The only time a logo has more than one color is for the primary logo, where the bar graph is yellow and the rest of the logo is blue.

Both patterns can be rotated in any way and a colored background can be added. However, only a white background and light colors on the “Colors” page can be used.
Do not distort the logo. Do not crop the logo.
Do not put logo on a busy background. Do not remove parts of the logo.
