SHOWING UP! A Different Perspective

By Sami J. 2024 AHIA Creative Australian Hairdresser of the Year

Hi, my name is Sami J, and I’m a raging hairaholicMy last colour was yesterday…. in New York!

In an incredibly busy, hectic, fast paced life, showing up is definitely one of the biggest things that I am focused on.

I know SHOWING UP that old chestnut lol.

But I’m going to break this down from a different POV.

I truly believe this has heavily contributed to how I’ve achieved everything I have, why I’m living my absolute dream life, and how the people around me show up for me too!

There was a time when my parents separated and I had to show up for my clients, a time I got divorced and had to show up for my team, and clients.

A time that I had a baby struggling to breathe in hospital, and another baby growing inside me, and I had to show up for my son, partner, team and clients.

We’ve all got these stories and moments in our life where even when we don’t feel like it…. We have to SHOW UP! And you all know I don’t mean just physically…. I mean like you mean it!

Those moments, those really hard ones that test us, they are how we grow and learn to be stronger personally, better leaders, mothers, friends. It’s how we raise the standard in our businesses, set the tone amongst our team, And build a safe, confident place for our families.

If you choose the hard option, to still show up, even when it feels like you don’t know how, watch what happens to those around you. In their hard moments, People remember your example, they remember you still showed up and it gives them strength and confidence to do the same.

So, as a Boss that SHOWS UP in those times, your team will mostly always follow your lead when they have a bad morning, broken down car, personal issues, and your clients will form stronger relationships with you, feeling all the VIP feels.

As a partner, that makes the effort to talk, spend quality time together, concentrate on your relationship, the results speak volumes. They will definitely want to return that energy after feeling appreciated, especially when you make the effort at 10pm at night after standing, working and talking all day.

As a mother, this is the biggest example of this. In my experience, if I show up for my kids UNDISTRACTED, fully attentive, good ol fashion quality time, they are like putty in my hands, and want to behave exceptionally all day! It’s not realistic for a whole day, but ensuring I show up for them, means they show up for me when mummy needs quiet because I have a zoom meeting, hehe.

This perspective helps me show up. Empathy resonates with most people, and is often remembered.

MY POINT IS …. You can influence how people show up for you, by making sure you show up for them first.

SO, ARE YOU SHOWING UP FOR ALL THE IMPORTANT PEOPLE IN YOUR LIFE?
