Avoir des idées, les développer et se faire remarquer : tel pourrait être l’enjeu de tout exposant présent sur un grand salon professionnel. Depuis 50 ans, le SILMO demeure une plateforme de business, un tremplin pour les nouvelles entreprises, un lieu d’expression de la création et de l’innovation, un espace de fertilisation croisée de la filière optique-lunetterie. Avec au cœur du système, des outils complémentaires (Silmo d’Or, forums de tendances, Silmo Academy, Trends by Silmo…) d’observation et de connaissance, de valorisation et découverte qui mettent en exergue le savoir-faire des entreprises exposantes.

Quel que soit l’endroit où nous sommes, nous avons accès aux mêmes informations, aux mêmes médias, aux mêmes outils. Avec la globalisation de l’économie et l’explosion des nouvelles technologies, les entreprises sont désormais confrontées à une information surabondante aussi diverse que variée. Conséquence, les entreprises opérant dans un contexte concurrentiel et de plus en plus compétitif sont toujours à la recherche de la meilleure information possible. C’est dans ce contexte que le SILMO a toujours souhaité jouer un rôle de « vigie » pour mieux cerner le futur de la filière et le retranscrire pour le « donner à voir et à comprendre ».

Ainsi, parmi l’offre foisonnante du millier d’exposants, il faut tenter de déceler le nec plus ultra de la création et de l’innovation, passé par le filtre des tendances couleurs, formes et styles dans cette nouvelle livraison de Trends by Silmo, un condensé non exhaustif d’un secteur de l’optique-lunetterie toujours aussi entreprenant et proactif.

Generate and develop ideas and stand out from the crowd - this is the challenge faced by all exhibitors at large industry trade fairs. For the past 50 years SILMO has been a business platform, a springboard for new businesses, a forum for design and innovation, and a place of cross-fertilisation for the optics and eyewear sector. Complementary market monitoring, knowledgebuilding, promotional and discovery tools (such as the Silmo d’Or awards, trend forums, Silmo Academy and Trends by Silmo) are the lynchpin of the system, as they showcase the know-how of the exhibiting companies.

Wherever we are, we are able to access the same information, media and tools. Companies are now faced with an excess of diverse and varied information as a result of the globalisation of the economy and the explosion of new technologies. Consequently, companies are operating in an ever more competitive environment and are always seeking the best possible information. SILMO has always sought to act as a ‘lookout’ in this context in order to gain a better understanding of what the future holds for the industry and transpose the information in order for people to “see and understand it”.

Therefore, from among the copious offering provided by the thousand or so exhibitors, we must try to highlight the crème de la crème of design and innovation, seen through the lens of the colour, shape and style trends, in this new issue of Trends by Silmo, a non-exhaustive digest of an optics and eyewear sector that is as proactive and dynamic as ever.

Dans un récent article intitulé « Brand-Snubbing Consumers Say ‘No’ in Logos », le Wall Street Journal constatait qu’un nombre croissant de consommateurs partageait des vidéos et des posts expliquant comment retirer sans dommage le crocodile Lacoste ou le joueur de polo Ralph Lauren sur un polo, la griffe Ray-Ban sur des lunettes de soleil ou le Swoosh de Nike sur des baskets... S’il ne s’agit pas encore d’une vague de fond, ce phénomène est à mettre en rapport avec celui des adblockers, ces logiciels qui bloquent les publicités en ligne : une étude PageFair, recensait 54 millions d’utilisateurs de ce type d’extension en 2013, ils étaient 420 millions en 2016 !

Aucune statistique n’existe à ce jour quant à l’engagement des « no logo », mais des études montrent le scepticisme, la méfiance, voire la défiance de consommateurs face aux marques trop intrusives ou trop démonstratives. « Il existe un mix de ‘love & hate’ autour des marques iconiques, qui est le fait de consommateurs éduqués et ultra informés par les réseaux sociaux », relève Olivier Altmann, président de l’agence de publicité Altmann + Pacreau.

In a recent article entitled Brand-Snubbing Consumers Say ‘No’ to Logos, the Wall Street Journal reported that a growing number of consumers are sharing videos and posts explaining how to remove logos without damaging clothing and accessories. For instance, they share how to remove the Lacoste crocodile or the Ralph Lauren polo player from t-shirts, the Ray-Ban brand name from sunglasses, or the Nike swoosh from trainers. While we are not yet seeing a groundswell, this trend can be connected with the adblocker phenomenon – the software that blocks online advertising. A PageFair study found that this type of extension had 54 million users in 2013, while their numbers had grown to 420 million by 2016!

Although there are no figures available about the numbers of ‘no-logo’ consumers, studies are finding that consumers are sceptical, mistrustful and even suspicious of overly intrusive or demonstrative brands. “There is a mix of love and hate around iconic brands, which is caused by consumers being educated and ultra well-informed by social media”, says Olivier Altmann, the head of Altmann + Pacreau advertising agency.

Si certains consommateurs refusent les codes trop visibles imposés par les marques et rejettent les logos, d’autres s’entichent de blasons et les exposent avec délectation ludique. Des artistes comme la new-yorkaise Ava Nirui pratique même le « brand-jacking », détournant des logos de grandes marques pour des « œuvres vestimentaires » qui séduisent les jeunes générations.

Adeptes des selfies et des réseaux sociaux — Instagram et Snapchat en tête —, ils utilisent les logos comme des hashtags qui contribuent à créer un engagement, signaler une appartenance à un groupe. Les marques de luxe, de sport et de lifestyle ont bien compris l’intérêt de jouer avec leurs griffes, jusqu’à s’associer entre elles pour des collections capsules très populaires destinées à décupler l’effet hashtag sur les réseaux sociaux.

Entre pro logo et no logo, l’équilibre marketing est à trouver, en effet, une marque ne doit pas s’enfermer dans une unique idéologie totalitaire, elle doit gérer toutes les sensibilités par une double stratégie marketing. L’une qui calme le jeu des symboles et l’autre qui ne craint pas à descendre dans l’arène du détournement, jusqu’à se parodier elle-même. Un logo n’est pas un blason héraldique figé dans le temps, mais le signe que la marque est bien vivante, dans l’air du temps…

While some consumers say ‘no’ to the overly visible styles imposed by brands and reject brand logos, others are crazy about logos and sport them with a real sense of relish and fun. Artists, such as the New Yorker Ava Nirui, even ‘brand-jack’, making bootleg versions of the big brands’ logos and placing them on “works of clothing” which appeal to the younger generations. The younger generations are keen on selfies and social media – with Instagram and Snapchat leading the way – and they use logos as hashtags to help build commitment and show that they belong to a group. The luxury, sport and lifestyle brands have grasped the benefits of playing with their logos and even go as far as joining forces to make highly popular capsule collections designed to increase tenfold the hashtag effect on social media.

A marketing balance needs to be struck between the prologo and no-logo groups. A brand must not confine itself to a single totalitarian ideology and instead must have a dual marketing strategy to manage the different mindsets.

One of the strategies needs to ‘defuse the logo situation’ and the other must not be afraid of giving a fresh twist to the logo and even sending itself up. A logo is not a coat of arms set in stone, but instead should be the sign that a brand is well and truly alive and in tune with the times.

In the optics and eyewear sector, the basic ‘standardized’ ever-dominant shapes – Butterfly, Round, Aviator, Rectangular – are being challenged by new looks that need to be closely monitored. These new shapes are changing the way spectacles are perceived, without necessarily being revolutionary or a million miles away from the norm!

Clin d’œil à deux univers opposés, le secteur de la lunetterie croise le fer (et le plastique !) avec le secteur de l’automobile ; dans un exercice de style stimulant, montures et voitures fusionnent pour stimuler le regard. Les créateurs de lunettes s’inspirent symboliquement du monde des constructeurs les plus mythiques pour adopter l’audace des lignes, la courbe des carrosseries, une esthétique qui suggère la vitesse, la puissance, l’évasion ou la nostalgie.

In a passing nod to two very different worlds, the eyewear sector is crossing swords (be they steel or plastic!) with the car industry. Frames and cars are merging to stimulate the gaze in an inspiring style exercise. Glasses designers are symbolically drawing inspiration from the world of the most iconic car manufacturers in order to adopt the sheer audacity of the lines, the curves of the bodywork and a look that oozes speed, power, escape and nostalgia.

Stunning sports cars are colliding stylistically with contemporary glasses, as legendary vintage cars are providing inspiration for ‘retromotive’ glasses with a vintage look.

The judging panel for the 2017 SILMO d’Or awards, marking the trade fair’s 50th anniversary, will be led by Livia Stoianova and Yassen Samouilov, who head a fashion house with a very auspicious name: On Aura Tout Vu. Their ebullient if not mind-blowing style reveals a very rich and timeless imagination, meaning that the originality of their designs is unparalleled. This unique vision will be expressed at the 24th SILMO d’OR awards, by more fully incorporating a creative yet fashion-based dimension, meaning that the optical frame and sunglasses categories will be split in two: FASHION OPTICAL FRAMES AND DESIGNER OPTICAL FRAMES AND FASHION SUNGLASSES AND DESIGNER SUNGLASSES.
