ultural values are in constant flux. To keep up with its historical function as cultural custodian, a museum must evolve in order to remain responsive to the needs of its citizenry. In this spirit, the Museum of Art – DeLand has, over the past year, continued to align its image and programs with the diverse needs of its constituency.

In order to attract visitors and tourists to the downtown area, the Museum leased the Miller-Fish Building from the City of DeLand. Its strategic site provided the Museum with an important presence in the main street business district. To capitalize on this location, the Museum opened a new, enlarged Museum Store on the first floor across the hall from a spacious suite of rooms available to rent for business meetings and special events. The entire second floor of this building is designed as a series of “New York” style exhibition galleries. The Paintings of John Mellencamp exhibition will open the 2015 fiscal year. Using the popularity of this show as leverage, the Development and Marketing Departments have orchestrated a direct mail piece advertising this exhibition to over 19,000 potential members and visitors across the Northeastern, Central, and Southwestern portion of the state. This mailing will be followed-up with a smaller, more specifically targeted membership drive.

“Cluster exhibitions” were introduced to the 2013 - 14 schedule. Every eight to twelve weeks, at least two new exhibits previewed at the main facility followed in two weeks by a new show opening at the satellite. These shows were organized intentionally to showcase different kinds of art - realism, abstraction, folk art, etc. in order to engage a diverse audience with something appealing for everyone. With the Jill Cannady show, all the galleries in both facilities were given over to her strong realist work providing the visitor with a rare, all inclusive, and in-depth opportunity to experience the oeuvre of one of Florida’s most significant contemporary artists.

Negotiations with a prominent South Florida collector, Samuel Blatt, resulted in his indefinite loan to the Museum of his 19th Century French Art Collection for the referential use by college students, Museum docents and teacher training classes. Several pieces already have been donated to the Museum’s permanent collection. This gesture has inspired other collectors, such as Mr. and Mrs. Robert Uchin (collection of Purvis Young) and the Estate of Richard J. Frank (collection of his watercolors) to gift works of art to the Museum’s Permanent Collection. In addition, a fine collection of West African Tribal Art has been promised to the Museum next year when the Staff will organize its first major ethnographic show of African sculpture and textiles.

has produced “collective ads” for everyone’s benefit. In the near future, the Museum will establish its own in-house newsletter to augment these community-based initiatives.

A Museum-designed billboard featuring a piece from its permanent collection will be unveiled on 1-4 in 2015 which should further enhance its statewide reputation as one of Florida’s tourist destinations.

During the second part of the calendar year, both the Board of Trustees and the Staff concentrated on two areas of concern: (1) identifying and recruiting an enthusiastic audience; and (2) enhancing the endowment and stabilizing annual cash flow.

Membership has increased by 44% and attendance by 121%, indicating that by maintaining that focus, we are Museum of Art - DeLand

George Bolge holds a Master of Arts degree from the Institute of Fine Arts of New York University with a Major in Greek and Roman Archeology and a Minor in Museum Studies and Conservation. Bolge is also a Fellow of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, holds an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Nova University and is the recipient of the Butler Institute of American Art Medal for distinguished contributions to American Visual Arts. In addition to being a decorated Vietnam Veteran, Bolge has been a leader in the Florida Art Community for more than three decades and served as the Executive Director for the Ft. Lauderdale Museum of Art for 18 years and numerous other leadership positions in the arts. He served as Executive Director of the Boca Raton Museum of Art where he, with his Board’s commitment, raised funds to construct a 44,000 squarefoot museum facility in Mizner Park. He has brought many important exhibitions to the State of Florida, including retrospective exhibitions of the work of Ansel Adams and Norman Rockwell, the graphic work of Renoir and major exhibitions of the works of Edward Hopper, Alice Neel and Andrew Wyeth. Bolge received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Florida Art Museum Directors Association in 2011.

L

ast year’s Annual Report was brimming with excitement concerning major changes at the Museum, including the organizational name change, re-branding campaign and our expansion into downtown DeLand. I am happy to report that fiscal year 2013-2014 merits equal enthusiasm! Those accomplishments formed a solid platform for launching exceptional exhibitions, programs, and partnerships that resulted in another banner year for the Museum of Art – DeLand. Under the leadership of George Bolge we inaugurated the New Year with the spectacular Jill Cannady exhibition in our 600 North Judy Thompson, Museum of Art - DeLand Woodland galleries and newly occupied President, space at 100 North Woodland Boulevard.

Board of Trustees In February, we opened the downtown Museum Store which proved to be an immediate success and remains popular with shoppers. These are just two highlights from a truly remarkable year described in greater detail by Museum staff in the following pages.

Over the past twenty-five years, we have benefited immensely from the unflagging and selfless support of the individual members of the Guild. Collectively, the Guild continues to pursue innovative ideas for funding Museum programs and advancing its mission. Krewe Nouveau continues to recruit creative and enthusiastic new members dedicated to fundraising for our organization while increasing the Museum’s visibility with a new audience of art lovers. We are grateful to each of these organizations for acting as our emissaries to the community.

Last year I recounted the Museum’s partnership, through the MACDeLand Committee of the DeLand Chamber, with other local non-profit institutions and the City of DeLand to make DeLand and West Volusia a cultural destination. The first annual June Arts and Multicultural Festival (JAMFest 2014) was well attended, and ongoing plans for the June 2015 JAMfest promise an even bigger and better event. The collaborative Smithsonian Day celebration in late September continues to bring new and long-time art patrons into the community by waiving admission fees to participating cultural organizations. It is part of a national program called Museum Day Live!, a free annual event hosted by Smithsonian Magazine.

Of particular importance to me has been the Museum’s effort to assist Edith I. Starke Elementary School staff and students in improving the school’s academic rating by providing art education programming and field study opportunities. This long-established community school has the ability to become an exemplary educational institution, and the Museum is dedicated to helping it achieve its potential. In all these efforts, we hope to contribute to the quality of life and economic viability of our community by providing a variety of meaningful art related experiences to the broadest audience possible.

One of the Museum’s most important efforts during 2013 - 14 was its push to expand the Board of Trustees by recruiting individuals with a passion for the arts and a willingness to commit time and resources in support of this organization’s mission. The work of identifying and enlisting the services of new Board members is one of the most important responsibilities of our Board and Executive Committee. We are making great progress, having attracted a number of new faces with a wide variety of professional backgrounds and expertise, however, there are still seats on the Board to fill. As voting members of the Museum with a stake in its governance, we encourage you to assist us in our efforts to recruit potential Trustees. The responsibilities of being a Trustee are matched by the satisfaction of knowing that the collective decisions made by the Board benefit not only the Museum, but the community it has served for over sixty-five years.

The membership of the Museum is the foundation of our support.

From your ranks come our Guild, Krewe, Board members and many of our major donors. We encourage you to be an ambassador for us in the community. Invite your friends, family, and business associates to visit the Museum and ask them to become members. Put the Museum high on your list of recommendations to visitors. Perhaps you would like to increase your participation by volunteering, serving on the Board or joining the Guild or Krewe, or maybe you know someone who might be interested.

Judy Thompson holds a BA degree from Vanderbilt University and a JD with high honors from Cumberland School of Law of Samford University. She served as Vice President and General Counsel and then President of Thompson Tractor Co., Inc., the North Alabama Caterpillar dealership. While in Birmingham, Alabama, she served as Board Member and President of the Metropolitan Development Board, the Alabama Symphony, the Metropolitan Arts Council and the Alabama Ballet. She also served as the Alabama Representative to the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Washington, DC. Since moving to DeLand she has been active in the arts community. She currently serves on the Board of the River of Lakes Heritage Corridor Committee, as Vice President of the Fall Festival of the Arts, Chair of the MacDeLand Committee of the DeLand Area Chamber of Commerce, and President of the Museum of Art – DeLand, where she has served as Chair of the EquiFest, Accreditation, Development and Finance Committees and a Member of the DeLand Sculpture Walk Committee. She also serves as a Board Member and Treasurer of the Tanenbaum Center for Religious Understanding in New York City.

The Board of Trustees Executive Committee John Wilton, Vice President, is a mixed media artist and has participated in more than 85 group shows and 30 solo shows. He has curated several exhibitions and served as a judge for more than 45 art shows throughout Florida. Wilton was awarded an Individual Artist’s Fellowship from the State of Florida and has completed numerous public art commissions for Volusia County and the State of Florida. After a 12- year career as art director in South Florida, he taught Visual Arts and Digital Media at Daytona State College for 27 years. Dr. Wilton holds a degree in Design from FSU and has completed graduate work in printmaking, visual communication and education at FIU and UCF. He serves on the Cultural Council of Volusia County, is a member of the Volusia County Cultural Alliance and a leader in the DeLand Sculpture Walk project. Wilton served as Interim Director in 2011 prior to the hiring of CEO George Bolge.

Linda Colvard Dorian, Past President, a native of DeLand, worked as a Washington attorney for 25 years in both the public and private sector. In that time she served as Deputy Director of the Federal Trade Commission, Vice President and General Counsel of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, and Adjunct Professor of Law at the National Law Center of George Washington University, from which she earned her Juris Doctor, with honors. Dorian has served on the Board of the Leadership Conference for Civil Rights and was a founding member of the Women’s Legal Defense Fund. She received the YWCA outstanding leader award for her contributions to public broadcasting. Dorian is an art collector and a longtime advocate for the arts.

Mary Jeanne Ludwig, Treasurer, received her B.A. in Accounting from the University of Central Florida. She is a partner in Joseph Master & Company and has 37 years of experience including specialized areas of practice with structuring private foundations and non-profits applications for exempt status. In 2002, Ludwig moved back to DeLand with her husband, artist Tim Ludwig, and has been actively involved in the community as an officer in the Volusia County Florida Institute of CPA’s and the International Association of Financial Planners. She is a charter member of Daytona Beach Community College Foundation, a charter member of the United Way Foundation and has served on the Boards of the Boys and Girls Clubs, the Children’s Health Assistance Project, and the United Way Women’s Initiative of Volusia County. She is currently Treasurer of the House Next Door Family Foundation.

Lee Downer, Secretary, Major General Lee A. Downer is retired from the position of Director of Operations at Headquarters Air Combat Command for Langley Air Force Base, Va. General Downer entered the Air Force in 1964 as a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy. He is a command pilot with 3,500+ hours in fighter aircraft, having flown 154 combat missions in Vietnam and commanded a composite wing in Turkey during Operation Desert Storm. General Downer is a highly decorated combat veteran who, among many others achievements, has been awarded the Distinguished Service Medal, Distinguished Flying Cross and Purple Heart. He holds a Masters in Political Science from Auburn University. After 33 years in the military, General Downer became an executive for several aerospace companies, specializing in computer systems to provide Command and Control of airpower. He is currently a Professor of Military Science at Old Dominion University in Virginia.

Dorothy Dansberger, Director of Finance & Operations

Dorothy Dansberger has been a member of staff since June 2012. Prior to that time, she served as Treasurer of the Museum Board, and was a member of the Cultural Arts Center Board of Directors. Ms. Dansberger has been involved with local non-profit arts organizations for more than 18 years, working as the Museum Manager for The DeLand Museum of Art, as the Business Manager and Athens Theatre Restoration Project Coordinator for the Sands Theater Center, and Grants Consultant for the Museum of Arts and Sciences in Daytona Beach. She also serves on the Executive Board of the DeLand Fall Festival of the Arts.

Plans were made to replace the building’s heating and air conditioning (HVAC) system. Funding for this improvement will come from matching Volusia County ECHO and State Cultural Facility grant funds.

The roof was replaced with an environmentally friendly membrane that will lower energy costs. This expenditure was used as partial match for the Volusia County ECHO Grant.

A new lighting system was installed in the upper galleries, to be followed with new lighting in the lower galleries.

Both the doors from the foyer and the loading dock, which open into the main gallery, were widened to accommodate easier access for large scale works of art.

The north facade was cleaned, repainted and sealed.

The front and rear entrance awnings were cleaned, repainted and sealed.

Volunteers & Interns

T

he Dorothy Johnson Award for the Arts is a prestigious award established through the generosity of lifetime arts advocate and educator Dorothy Johnson. As a former Museum Board Member, it was Dorothy’s desire to recognize an individual or organization whose contributions, support, and service has significantly advanced the vision of the Museum of Art - DeLand.

The Museum’s 2014 Dorothy Johnson Award for the Arts was presented to long-time DeLand resident, educator and community leader Savilla Beasley.

Since joining the Guild as a charter member in 1988, her flair for hospitality and organization has benefited Museum members and guests.

Savilla chaired the Museum Receptions Committee for more than twenty years, choosing menus for openings and special events, coordinating volunteers from within the Guild, and orchestrating social gatherings with great finesse.

The Museum Board, Staff and Membership offer their deep appreciation to Savilla for her years of dedicated service.

T

he Internship Programs at the Museum of Art – DeLand provide students with first hand professional experiences in a museum setting in order to promote awareness of museum careers and other aspects related to the non-profit sector.

Museum internships are designed primarily for undergraduate and graduate students majoring in art history, art education, museum studies, communications, business and public relations, arts administration or information technology. These non-paid internships are typically available in the Curatorial, Education, Exhibition, Development and Marketing departments.

The Museum also provides a variety of volunteer opportunities for high school (grades 10-12), undergraduate and graduate students. Volunteer service hours are documented and may be submitted for school-based community service credits and/or course credit.

Together with college interns/students, 25 Volusia County High School students volunteered for the Museum during the 2013-14 fiscal year, providing more than 1500 hours of service.

Museum Guild

S

ince its formation twenty five years ago, the Guild of the Museum of Art-DeLand has been an integral and dynamic part of the Museum family. The purpose of the Museum Guild is many-faceted. Its goals are as follows: • • • •

Encourage interest in art and in the Museum of Art-DeLand through various monthly programs relating to the arts.

Assist the Museum by staffing the galleries for exhibitions and hosting receptions.

Augment funds through fundraising efforts for the benefit of the Museum with an emphasis on education programs.

The Guild welcomes new members to its monthly meetings on the second Monday of each month, from September through May. The meetings consist of educational programs, hospitality, and friendship with fellow art lovers. Participation in the Guild requires a Museum membership, Guild dues, and a willingness to give three hours of volunteer service each month.

The Guild provides trained docents for tours of the Legendary Florida Collection at the Volusia County Historic Courthouse.

Guild members staff the gallery reception desk and the Museum Store at 600 N. Woodland Blvd. The Store offers a wide variety of original art by Florida artists in the way of fine jewelry, hand-painted scarves, paintings, drawings, prints, photography, pottery, exhibition catalogues and other gift items.

This year, the Guild hosted 19 receptions, including the annual meeting, a PEO group, an Arts on the Grow student art exhibition for more than 400 guests, and 5 gallery talks.

In November the Guild hosted the Patrons’ Retreat at the DeLand Fall Festival of the Arts. Light refreshments were served during the 2-day event for the patrons in attendance. The 21st annual Teddy Bear Brunch was held in December with 120 attendees. Tickets were provided for children from low-income families through outreach efforts with Mid Florida Community Services Head Start and area churches.

Annual fundraisers include the Holiday Gift Showcase (opened for more than 300 attendees at the Thin Man Watts Jazz Festival), a rummage sale, and Wearable Art lll. The spring fundraiser, Wearable Art III: From the Wall to the Runway, was a tremendous success. Talented local artists and models were joined by artists traveling from Tampa, Orlando and Lakeland. Their wearable art was unique and quite spectacular. The Museum Guild’s Wearable Art III Committee successfully brought in knowledgeable lighting, sound, music and a professional Master of Ceremonies, which made the evening very entertaining.

The Guild Board welcomed Judy Thompson, President of the Board of Trustees, to our monthly meetings. Her presence enhanced communication among the Guild, Board of Trustees, and Museum Staff.

Guild members logged a total of 5,180 volunteer hours at an in-kind value of $54,194.36. Additional contributions were made to the Museum from proceeds from Guild fundraisers and the Museum Store at 600 N. Woodland Blvd.

Exhibitions & Collections view of the subject’s culture as represented within the home and other interior spaces. Slesnick’s archives are now part of the Museum’s permanent collection.

Selections from the Permanent Collection remained on view in the lower galleries with pieces from the Museum’s collection and works by prominent Florida artists, including: Richard Segalman, James Couper, Gary Monroe, Syd Solomon, and Jimmy Ernst. The unique award-winning jewelry of Mary Schimpff Webb was displayed in the Chris Harris Gallery in the exhibition Mary Schimpff Webb: Artist Jeweler. In addition to the fine jewelry on loan from the artist, the exhibition also contained design sketches and medals of distinction received for her work.

As one of Florida’s most recognized artists, Jill Cannady helped establish Florida as a legitimate contributor to the national arts scene in the 70’s and 80’s. Jill Cannady: Idea and Medium, a semi-retrospective of Cannady’s encaustic and cold wax paintings, oils, drawings and sculptures, filled all nine Museum galleries from January 17 through May 11, 2014.

mall Master Works: From the Butler Institute of Art, the first exhibition to be held in the downtown galleries, opened on October 10, 2013. It featured seventy-five intimate works by some of America’s most influential artists on loan from the Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, Ohio. Edward Hopper, Andy Warhol, and George Inness are just a few of the artists represented in the inaugural show which ran through January 5, 2014.

Forging an Identity: Contemporary Latin American Art continued through the end of 2013 in the upper galleries at 600 N. Woodland Boulevard. The exhibit featured thirty outstanding Latin American artists, including Fernando Botero and Roberto Matta. Les Slesnick’s Private Spaces: Mexico also extended into the new fiscal year. His photographs capture an intimate

Quirky, expressionistic oil paintings by contemporary artist Hunt Slonem adorned the atrium of the Museum of Art – DeLand at 600 N. Woodland Boulevard throughout April 2014. Bunnies by Hunt Slonem featured a heavy mix of impasto oil techniques combined with repeated images of rabbits executed in a gestural style.

Collectors Choice: Selected Works from the Samuel Blatt Collection featured late 19th and early 20th century works by European artists, including: Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux, Claude Emile Schuffenecker, Pablo Picasso and George Braque. Interiors and landscapes in oil were augmented with works in pastel, ink, and graphite in the David Fithian is a practicing artist who has served as coordinator and curator of the Museum’s exhibitions and collections since 2001. Fithian attended the Art Students League and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. His work is included in such corporate and museum collections as RCA Incorporated, Beaver College, PA, Maitland Art Center, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. He has taught art at the Crealde School of Art and the Maitland Art Center. Mr. Fithian has extensive experience in gallery installation and has worked with the Orlando Museum of Art and other Central Florida galleries.

Steve Tobin: Roots opened in the lower gallery on May 23, 2014. Tobin is best known for his monumental public outdoor sculptures made of painted steel. A more personal experience was offered here with smaller models, glass castings, and works mixing steel with glass. Gestural brush drawings referencing the shapes of larger sculptures and a collection of whimsical bronze cast shoes completed the exhibit. Karl Zerbe: Works on Paper, representing the artist’s early experiments with acrylic polymer paints and neon pigments, were exhibited in the Chris Harris Gallery. These mixed media works on paper exemplify Zerbe’s inquisitive spirit and echo his early involvement with the Abstract Expressionist movement. Both exhibitions closed August 24, 2014.

A collection of Stephen Althouse’s large format black and white photographic images titled Stephen Althouse: Personal Symbols, Private Totems were exhibited in the downtown galleries between May 30 and September 28, 2014. Many images reflect the culture of his Amish neighbors in Central Pennsylvania. The simple tools and implements of everyday life are assigned power through his use of light, shadow, and contrast while braille messages imbedded into some of the prints add subtle texture and mystery.

Brightest Africa opened June 13, 2014 in the event space at 100 N. Woodland Boulevard. The pieces from a private collection featured sculptures, textiles, tools, baskets and other objects representing some of the most creative, inventive and ingenious cultures from across the African continent.

Chen Chi: Watercolors on loan from the Butler Institute opened in the lower galleries at 600 N. Woodland Boulevard on September 12, 2014. The artist’s large scale watercolors merge traditional Chinese brushstrokes with Western techniques creating colorful, aesthetic, harmonious works. Although painted on delicate rice paper, the images are bold and powerful. An exhibition of recent additions to the permanent collection opened simultaneously in the Chris Harris Gallery, including works

by Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux, Man Ray, and Richard Frank.

In the Upper Galleries, O, Appalachia: Artists of the Southern Mountains offered a comprehensive over view of the selftaught artists and craftsmen working in the Appalachian region. The exhibition of Folk Art sculptures, paintings, textiles and furniture was loaned from the collection of Ramona Love Lampell and Millard Lampell.

The members of Krewe Nouveau presented the first annual Exposed: A Body of Art event to benefit the Museum. The evening, celebrating the human form across a wide variety of artistic media, was a huge success and will be expanded in 2015 to accommodate a greater number of artists and patrons.

Recognition of Museum’s fundraising initiatives would be incomplete without applauding the dedicated support of the Guild. The Guild’s contributions of time, energy, and finances have helped sustain the Museum of Art – DeLand for twenty-five years. Their 2013 - 14 successes are described in detail in the Guild’s report on page 8 of this report.

he Museum of Art – DeLand gratefully acknowledges the donors, sponsors, and members who supported the Museum’s exhibitions and programs throughout this fiscal year.

Their generosity continues to strengthen the foundation of the Museum established more than sixty years ago. Development initiatives through fund-raisers, grants, donations and memberships brought in over $600,000 for the year ending September 30, 2014.

The expansion of gallery and retail space into the Miller-Fish Building downtown increased visibility, attracted new audiences, and provided further opportunities for program development.

This extended outreach contributed to a significant increase in membership and attendance. The first of three galleries in the new space was named in memory of Marcia Adkins Griffin through the generosity of her husband Larry G. Griffin, who also sponsored the Larry and Marcia Griffin Reception Gallery. Two remaining galleries offer naming opportunities for donors wishing to leave a meaningful, visible and lasting legacy for themselves or in recognition of someone special in their lives.

Viva la Vida: A Celebration of Life on the Day of the Dead was the Museum’s special fundraising event of the year. Themed to coincide with the exhibition Forging an Identity: Contemporary Latin American Art, the Museum parking lot was turned into a festive mercado featuring live mariachi, authentic cuisine from the Mayan Grill food truck, craft beer and signature Margaritas. Krewe Nouveau, a community charitable organization, was

The State of Florida budget, passed in July 2014, funded the Cultural Endowment Program providing a $240,000 match to the Museum’s required share of $360,000. The purpose of the program is to contribute operating income from generated interest while maintaining the endowment principal at $600,000.

The program, last funded in 2006, has held the Museum’s qualified application in roll-over until this year. The Museum of Art – DeLand continues to receive general operating support from the County of Volusia and the State of Florida Division of Cultural Affairs.

Pattie Pardee spent twelve years working for the Sands Theater Center (1993-2005) when it was located in the Cultural Arts Center, so she felt right at home when she came aboard as Director of Development at the Museum in July 2012. Her lengthy career in non-profit arts organizations, including the Museum of Arts and Sciences in Daytona Beach (2006-2011), has been complemented by employment opportunities in other areas, primarily higher education. Pattie holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Humanities from Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida.

Membership

W

e entered fiscal year 2013-2014 anticipating membership growth, and we were not disappointed. Exceptional exhibitions, related programing (gallery talks, lectures, films and tours), opening receptions and fundraising events all contributed to a record number of Museum memberships.

The Museum ended the fiscal year with 434 memberships - a 44% increase over the previous year. The various membership levels often include one or more persons, bringing the total of individuals with member benefits to a conservative estimate of over 650 for the year ending September 30, 2014. The Museum’s membership demographic extended far beyond Central Florida with representation from the Northeast, Mid-West & Western regions of the United States and Canada.

Members enjoyed unlimited free admission to the galleries, opening receptions, gallery talks and lectures. They also received a 10% discount at both Museum Stores and special discounts on classes, workshops and camps.

Affiliation with the North American Reciprocal Museum program (NARM) and Southeastern Reciprocal Membership program (SERM) continues to be a favored benefit for new and renewing members. There are currently 800+ reciprocal museums available to our members through these two organizations, with benefits determined by membership level.

It is a great time to be a member of the Museum of Art – DeLand and we anticipate continued growth in the upcoming year.

Viva la Vida: A Celebration of Life on the Day of the Dead Suzi Tanner joined the Museum staff in October 2012, bringing 27 years of experience from management positions in California and Oregon, as well as the Central Florida area.

Since moving to DeLand in 2006, she has served on the Executive Boards of the charitable organizations Krewe Nouveau and Krewe de Coeur, as well as the DeLand Historic Preservation Board. As Manager of Guest Services, Membership and Special Events, Ms. Tanner acts as a liaison to the community and provides in-house support to the volunteer organizations working on behalf of the Museum of Art – DeLand.

Camp Create is part of the Museum’s ongoing commitment to offer affordable youth art programs that provide an enriching and quality experience. The Museum’s camps have been inspiring young minds since 1951 when the Museum was founded as the DeLand Children’s Museum. Program activities included: • • • •

Masters & Muses Summer Camp Create for 6-to12 year-olds Seven week-long camp sessions that reached 153 children Camp Create scholarships awarded to 40 children Camp Create Youth Exhibition attended by more than 125 children their families and friends.

Community Outreach has the Museum participating in various community arts festivals and partnering with community groups and organizations, which assists in highlighting how the arts can play a vital role in everyone’s life. Make and Take, a guided activity for children, was presented by the Museum for: Arts on the Grow Gallery Tour of O, Appalachia: Artists of the Southern Mountains

he Museum of Art - DeLand is committed to providing the highest quality art education programs available to deliver enriching experiences for visitors of all ages with all levels of familiarity with art. A wide range of educational programs are designed to promote life-long learning to engage a variety of audiences using the Museum’s collections and exhibitions.

Arts on the Grow is an arts integration program designed to promote the growth of the whole child by connecting artistic and creative development with a wide range of skills in other areas, including perceptual, cognitive, language, and social skills. This program, developed by the Museum in collaboration with Mid Florida Community Services Head Start, aligns with The Head Start Child Development and Early Learning Framework and Florida School Readiness Performance Standards. Funding for the project was made possible by a grant from the PNC Foundation whose Grow Up Great program provides opportunities to enhance learning and development in a child’s early years. Docent Training Program is a comprehensive year-long training course that includes: classes and workshops in theories of teaching and learning, museum education, art history, methods of interpretation, field study and touring techniques, information on current and permanent exhibitions, principles and elements of art and design and studio practices. Participants who successfully complete the program are required to serve a minimum of one year as a museum docent.

Gallery Talk and Lecture Series present lively and informative talks by curators, academic scholars, artists, and other experts on a wide range of art-inspired topics. This on-going program for life-long learners is designed to enhance their experience and enjoyment when visiting the Museum. Eleven gallery talks, lectures and panel discussions led by the Curator of Education and guest speakers, were presented in conjunction with Museum exhibitions. These included: • • • • • •

Family Fun Saturday is a free event held on the second Saturday of the month, September through May. Families spend time together enjoying art, expressing their creativity and engaging their imaginations with hands-on art activities highlighting the Museum’s exhibitions.

Six Family Fun Day Saturdays took place in 2013 - 14, with Make & Take art activities and gallery tours. Admission is waived for all Museum visitors.

School Field Studies promote critical thinking and interdisciplinary curriculum applications.

During visits, students strengthen visual literacy skills, develop vocabulary and enrich observational and inquiry-based thinking.

School Outreach Programs bring the Museum of Art into students’ lives through rich experiences centering on exhibitions and the Permanent Collection. These programs are intended to enhance verbal and visual literacy and to create lifelong learners with an appreciation for the arts.

StART - Stories and Art with the Volusia County Public Library focuses on the promotion of reading and visual literacy. StART programs, made available to each regional library in Volusia County, include an exhibition themed story and appropriate youth art activity. The free programs, suitable for elementary age students, included: • Participation by Libraries in DeLand, Deltona, New Smyrna Beach, Lake Helen and Ormond Beach • 22 individual programs presented in 2013 - 14 Workshops and Classes offer a diverse range of educational opportunities for students of all experiences levels and interests.

Art of Reflection and Response Teacher Institute is the Museum’s most immersive and collaborative professional development program to date. This year-long program emphasizes the connection between visual and verbal literacy by incorporating an arts integration, inquiry-based model. It is a teaching strategy Museum of Art - DeLand

that helps teachers merge arts standards with core curricula to build connections and provide the opportunity to make engaging correlations across content areas. The goal of the Institute is to increase teachers’ understanding of how visual art can support reading, writing and complex thinking in their classrooms by offering a behind-the-scenes look at the Museum’s resources and programs to support development of interdisciplinary lesson plans. Seventeen Volusia County K-12 teachers enrolled in the Institute which was initiated in June 2014.

Pam Coffman, Curator of Education Pam Coffman is an accomplished art educator and professional artist with more than 20 years of experience teaching studio art and art history at the secondary and college level. Prior to coming to the Museum in 2008, she received her BA from Rollins College and her MS in Art Education and Studio Art from Florida State University. As an art instructor and Department Chair of Fine and Performing Arts at Oviedo High School, Coffman designed innovative art programs such as Computer Graphics, Portfolio I /II, and Advanced Placement Studio Art. In 2001, she joined the faculty of Seminole Community College as an adjunct professor of art. In her six years at SCC, she developed Studio Art and Art History programs on the Oviedo Campus. In 2005, she created What About… Series?, a Community Cultural Arts Program, sponsored by SCC. Coffman has received numerous awards including recognition in presenting art education workshops in Florida and nationally including Disney’s Teacherrific Judge’s Choice Award; National Board Teacher Certification; the State of Florida High School Art Educator of the Year and Teacher of the Year at Oviedo High School.

G

oing into the second year following the change of the Museum’s name and expanding its mission, Marketing projects grew with each new objective set in Phase I of promoting a new, recognizable brand identity for the Museum of Art - DeLand.

In keeping with the exceptional product delivered to residents of, and vistors to, the County of Volusia with respect to the calibre of nationally and internationally respected exhibitions and related educational programming, a new Museum tagline was introduced this fiscal year, reflecting the Museum’s social and cultural impact. Experience the Power of Art became the unwavering message that was communicated across every channel. New media platforms with varying parameters dispatched the same consistent narrative.

A record number of exhibition cataolgues, brochures, didactics, banners, ads, postcards, bookmarks and invitations were designed in house; public radio transmitted briefs on upcoming openings, gallery talks and fundraisers; and a new Museum YouTube Channel was created to house short videos of accomplished, and upcoming, programming.

The first Arts on the Grow video was produced in the summer as were videos for Camp Create and new exhibitions. First-ever Museum-branded TV commercials, targeted to Central Florida residents across 14 major networks, were storyboarded to deliver informative 10 and 15-second visuals of additional galleries and a new Museum store opening in downtown DeLand. Additional signage was installed downtown to identify the Museum Store, and, for the first time, clearly addressed the historical Miller-Fish Building for Museum guests and tourists to the area.

Whether a preschooler participating in Arts on the Grow, a business partner supporting the arts, or a retiree participating in the Museum’s Docent program, an exponential number of captured Museum moments, still and moving, were shared through email marketing, website updates, and social media posts and tweets.

These communication tools helped to define what it is to experience the power of art.

Some planned Phase II marketing initiatives for the next fiscal year include the production of a Membership eNewsletter, partnered ads with local businesses, segmenting email directories, engaging new audiences outside of Volusia County, an interstate billboard, a website e-calendar update and Museum App. Lisa Habermehl, Director of Marketing Lisa Habermehl joined the Museum staff Oct 2012. She has 16 years experience in periodical management, feature and promotional writing, and graphic design for both print and electronic production. Her portfolio as Feature Writer/Editor at Stetson University (2010-12) assisted the university in hitting record enrollment for the 2011-12 and 2012-13 academic years. Habermehl’s work led to a 2011 Award of Excellence for SU Magazine from the Counsel for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE); a 2011 CASE Special Merit Award for VISUAL Magazine; and a 2010 Gold Award from Higher Ed Marketing for SU Magazine. As Managing Editor at John Knox Village (JKV) of Central Florida, Inc. (1999-2010), Habermehl was awarded five National Mature Media Awards. While at JKV, Habermehl established the Resident’s Services Department and expanded the Wellness Program. Habermehl holds a BS from the University of Ottawa, Canada, and is a volunteer with CATALYST Global Youth Initiatives Inc. Museum of Art - DeLand

Museum Store (Downtown)

ocated at 100 North Woodland Boulevard in the Miller-Fish Building, the Museum’s downtown facility includes 3,500 square feet of New York-style gallery space (photo page 7), and a 2,250 square foot street level Event Space used for hosting opening night receptions and Museum special events. When not in use by the Museum, the space is available to rent for private functions.

This location also houses a 2,500 square foot Museum Store which has become a favorite downtown shopping destination since opening in February 2014. The retail space stocks items sourced from major museums around the world, a large selection of art related merchandise, and unique gifts.

Residents and the out of town visitors traveling through DeLand each day are drawn in by the highly visible “Museum Store” signage and themed window displays. It also serves as an information source for current and upcoming museum exhibits, educational programs and special events. Additionally, the Store is an important point of sale for Museum membership.

As an incentive, Museum members enjoy the benefit of a 10% discount on merchandise and receive invitations to exclusive sales events throughout the year. A 1-2-3 gallery admission ticket, sold here and at the Museum’s main campus, grants one person access to the two Museum locations for a period of three days.

Downtown Museum Store Grand Opening February 2014

As anticipated, the downtown Museum Store and galleries have provided greater visibility, expanded community access, and created a positive revenue stream for the Museum of Art - DeLand.

Teri Peaden began her art career as a jewelry designer in Winter Park, Florida. She moved to DeLand eleven years ago, attracted by the active cultural community. In 2010, Teri and her husband, artist Rob Peaden, opened NEST, a home décor store and wine bar in Artisan Alley. She served as President of the DeLand Fall Festival of the Arts, two terms on the City of DeLand Historic Preservation Board, and established Fourth Friday, a monthly showcase of local artists and art venues. Drawing on 25 years of experience working with high-end retailers in Winter Park, Miami, and Hollywood, Florida, Teri joined the Museum staff in 2013 to oversee the retail expansion and merchandising at the Museum’s downtown location, and to manage its galleries and event space.
