own eyes. So, thank you Sno-Barons—you have been a pleasure to work with! Especially Meshell Gorsegner, who’s probably thinking by now, “When is this building going to be done?” Ha! Not just yet.
How would I describe the past five months since my last column? Hot and hazy! And that’s not just the weather. The “offseason” began with the Spring Meeting in Otsego— which seems so long ago—to ISC in Omaha, to the Summer Event at Trails Inn Quadna. And to top it off, getting the MnUSA portable building completed by September 12 at 7 am after much perseverance, some cool dedicated volunteers, and some very patient people. I’m looking forward to another year of snowmobiling enthusiasm, and of course getting out on the trails, which is something we all love.
Included in this issue is a NEW DNR requirement, ISC, Summer Event recap, membership changes, bylaw changes, nomination profiles, and much more.

Fall...What a Great Time of the Year! Mike Clevenger
Hello fellow snowmobilers, and welcome to the kickoff of fall. With Princton Outlaw Grass Drags and the Sno Baron’s Hay Days events taking place, in many snowmobiler’s minds this is the official kickoff to winter. It’s time to shop for those needed items to finish a project sled, do some extra tuning on your mountain or trail sled, replace some needed clothing, or just pick up supplies for this upcoming season. I hope you found what you were looking for. We all know you can find anything at these events. Our summer weather was about as mixed up as I have ever seen. From the cooler dry days this spring to the extreme temperature changes during June and July. The precipitation was just as variable throughout the state—extreme drought in the Brainerd area to the 200% overage of rain in the Mankato area. Not to mention the tornadoes and hailstorms that ripped apart our countrysides all over the state. Living in Minnesota my entire life, I should be more accustomed to the extreme weather changes. You know the saying, “If you don’t like the weather now, just wait 15 minutes and it will change.” I can only hope this summer was just setting us up for a great snow season for the entire state. It would be great to be able to ride your sled from your own doorstep and not have to trailer it to find snow conditions good enough to ride. We are also in a very important time of the year with all legislators being up for election in Minnesota.
Be sure to reach out to your local candidate and talk with them about the importance of the sport of snowmobiling in our great state of Minnesota. Invite them to a club meeting or social event and show them your support and encourage them to support your needs also. There will be new faces and some familiar ones too from years past. MnUSA is also having their elections this fall; support the nominees running for MnUSA officer positions. Our elections will take place the fourth weekend of October in Alexandria at the MnUSA Fall Meeting. Look for their bios in this issue. I hope everyone has a great fall! Get those sleds ready— we all want to ride this year. Hope to see you on the trail.

I hope everyone has had a wonderful summer and enjoyed the weather. I’m ready for cold and snow myself! It’s been a wild year for me. The company I hauled heavy equipment for sold, and I lost my job. But I truly feel it has been a godsend for me, as I have changed careers and now sell powersports at The Power Lodge in Ramsey (hint hint). A new career and a lot of learning but I truly enjoy it and am glad it worked out. The 2027 raffle calendars are here. Before you get mad at the next statement, please understand that we are being watched very closely by the Minnesota Gambling Control Board and need to make sure that all our t’s are crossed and i’s are dotted. The only way to pick up your calendars at the Sno-Baron’s Hay Days is to pre-order them in time to be packed and ready for delivery. If you did not pre-order in $20.00 time, you will still be able to order calendars at Hay Days to receive shortly thereafter. Elections are like snow forecasts...no one’s sure what’s coming! We are swamped with election ads and door knocks to the point we are political experts whether we choose to be or not. In a recent KSTP poll, 40% of Minnesota voters responded inflation/ cost of living to be the biggest issue. That 40% response is roughly equal among Republicans and Democrats. Surprisingly, this consensus is greater than the next five (partisan leaning) issues combined. Regardless of what you hear from the politicians, Minnesotans are mostly on the same page. Accordingly, we should pay attention to who shapes the conversation. Do we let politicians define the debate along partisan lines, or do we help decide what gets discussed over the next three months? I say we choose the topic of SNOWMOBILING in Minnesota! If you’ve tried the rest... IT’S TIME TO TRY THE BEST!

That survey is our shot at putting snowmobiling on the record before a single vote is cast—not as a partisan ask, but as the one thing we already know most of Minnesota can agree matters. Not every candidate will answer. Not every answer will satisfy you. But every response on file is something you can hold them to, long after the yard signs come down. A survey response is one thing. Seeing it firsthand is another. Invite your local candidates to a club meeting. Let them watch how this volunteer organization works, meet the people who keep it running, and see for themselves what snowmobiling means to your community and your local economy—not just as a line in a questionnaire, but in the room. Look up your district now. And when November comes, cast your vote knowing exactly where your candidate stands on snowmobiling in Minnesota.
MnUSA News Election Bylaw Change Please note the Section 2 Bylaw changes below (updated information appears in underline). Section 2 Officers will be elected at the Fall workshop annual meeting, held on the fourth (4th) weekend of October. All State officers shall take office on the first day of the month following the election, and shall hold office for two years or until their successor has been elected with the exception of the Past President, who will serve for as long as he/she is the immediate past president. The 10/25/26 election for the Vice president and Secretary will be for a one-year term. On 10/24/27 there will be an election held of the Vice President and Secretary which will start the two-year term to have staggered elections. President and Treasurer will have elections on even years and the Vice President and Secretary will have elections on the odd years. (Amended 10/25/26)

MnUSA News New Requirements for Clubs receiving GIA Grant Funds from the DNR (Benchmarks)
Starting with your mandatory DNR meetings, you are required to use new language that must be added to your clubs, trail associations, etc., bylaws, if you receive GIA funds from the DNR. The language is for a Conflict-of-Interest Policy, as fraud has rocked the state of Minnesota and governmental agencies. You do NOT need to hire an attorney to do this work.

You are required to complete these two steps: Step 1 – Simply take the language provided by the DNR (see below); call it Addendum “A” and attach it to the back of your current bylaws. Step 2 – During your normal meeting, have someone make a motion to add Addendum “A”—the language regarding a Conflict-of-Interest Policy—to the current bylaws. Second is made and recorded. Call to Vote is taken and it’s approved. Keep a record of that vote, as you may need to prove to your “Sponsor” this was validated. Also, best practice is to keep a copy of your NEW Addendum “A” added bylaws handy, as again your “Sponsor” may ask to see your complete bylaws, showing the Addendum “A” PRIOR to funding your club’s or trail association’s benchmarks.

Here is the language provide by the DNR to make your Addendum “A” legal: Club leadership (officers and those making any decisions on expenditures) must avoid actual or potential/perceived conflicts of interest when conducting club business and managing GIA funds. Club leadership with an actual or potential/ perceived conflict must disclose it to the club’s officers, ensure the disclosure is recorded in meeting minutes and abstain from related decisions. Hay Days 2026 has it all…and more!
The 59th Annual Hay Days event will take place this year on Saturday, September 12 and Sunday, September 13. This year will be a remarkable one for MnUSA! Why do I say that? Thanks to the generous donations by some MnUSA clubs, we will no longer be in a tent… we will be in a building! One with doors and windows, and electricity, and ceiling fans, and laptop stations, you know, like a real building, but portable at that. That’s right. Not only will you be able to visit the new and exciting growing list of vendors at Hay Days, but you can also stop by our NEW MnUSA building. We are the fourth vendor on the right when you come through the East Gate (main gate), right before you go down the big hill by the Freestyle Expo. 10
Many thanks to those clubs who gave generously to make all this happen, and to the volunteers who laid out the pad and apron, formed it up, poured concrete, set the building in place, and finished off the interior. It truly was the work of many that made it all happen. Also, while at Hay Days, check out the selfie spot and send the location to all your friends and tell them to join you. Stop by the Hay Days merch building and grab a commemorative sweatshirt, t-shirt, etc. Staying overnight? Showers are available for a fee. As always, swap hauling your items to the many gates outside is available free of charge.

No Summer Holiday for MnUSA
Summer Campout weekend returns with a mix of fun and BOD meetings With a hot and insanely dry Minnesota summer, it’s illogical for the average person, including some of the most die-hard snowmobilers, to be thinking about the quickly approaching snowmobiling season. For those of you familiar with MnUSA functions, yes, the MnUSA Board of Directors (BOD) does meet quarterly, and, yes, one of those meeting times is in July for what we call the Summer Campout. In days past, the MnUSA Summer Campout used to be just that—a full weekend of camping. However, over

the years, the great Summer Campout has been reduced to just a day of General Membership (GM) and BOD meetings along with a picnic lunch. But behold, as the event rotates around the 9 regions, it has once again landed on Region 2’s turn to host. For a campout destination we chose MnUSA Business Partner, Trails Inn Quadna as our destination (trailsinnquadna.com). Trails Inn Quadna is a perfect match for Summer Campout with numerous campsites with electric, water and sewer hook-ups, almost unlimited primitive sites, direct access to ATV and snowmobile grant-in-aid trails, both open pavilion and enclosed facilities for meeting, and the greatest hosts ever in Shawn and Jess Pehrson. Several enthusiastic MnUSA directors and members traveled early or stayed late for the weekend. For those folks, I guided rides around the now flooded Canisteo open surface iron mine pit on the west end of the Mesabi Iron Range. The ride originated out of my Jig

Over the weekend we were blessed with the top-notch guiding of Perry May of the Over The Hills Gang ATV club with the Friday ride north via the UPM Blandin Trail to Zorbaz on Pokegama (yes, a MnUSA Business Partner). And on Saturday, a ride south and west to the Emily and Outing areas for lunch at The Pickled Loon (yes, of course, another Business Partner). The hospitality during the weekend was off the charts with Harlan Kingsley of the Jackpine Haypoint Snowmobile and Northwoods Quads ATV clubs dishing up the picnic dinner Friday, and Gary Vezina, MnUSA Director from Region 7, serving it up Saturday evening.

Sunday, however, the fun was over, and in the relentless heat we still powered through our quarterly GM and BOD meetings with a special Membership Committee

And, no, they weren’t easy discussions, as many hard topics were addressed regarding MnUSA Executive Board terms, individual and Business Partner membership costs and expirations, recognition of donation tiers, region and a new club payback to promote recruiting new Business Partners, and much more. As chair of the Website Committee, I have been busy all summer working with our website and online membership platform developer, Wolf Pack Technologies. As many projects and tweaks have been

» Scotty Harder, Nominee for President I have been snowmobiling since I was 7 years old. Snowmobiling is one of my biggest passions, and so is preserving the right to ride in Minnesota, as we have over 23,000 miles of groomed trails in the state. Thank you to all the volunteers that keep our system alive. I have been a member of MnUSA since 1981, and over the years I have belonged to several different clubs. Currently I am President of the Sherburne County Snowmobile Trail Association, Trail Coordinator for the Elk Lake Easy Riders, and Vice President of the Elm Creek Snowcruisers. I am a general member of three other clubs as well. I also belong to the Michigan Trail Association and ACSA. And as you may or may not know, I have been Vice President of MnUSA for the past three years and have really enjoyed working with the E-board members and the region directors on many issues. I am also Chairman of the Fundraising committee and Merchandise committee, as we combined these two committees into one a year ago. I look forward to potentially serving as your MnUSA President and hope to see all of you at the Fall Conference where the vote will be made.

»Troy Johnson, Nominee for Vice President My snowmobiling journey began at just three years old, riding in front of my Grandpa Bill on either a 1971 Ski-Doo Olympique or a 1972 Scorpion Super Stinger, largely depending on which one decided to start that day! Over the years, that early introduction grew into a lifelong passion and dedication to the sport. I have been a highly active member of the Cromwell Sno-Gophers for decades and a groomer operator for 32 years. I currently serve as the club’s President, with past leadership roles including Vice President, Treasurer and Trail Coordinator.

I have proudly served as a certified snowmobile safety instructor for 26 years. I truly believe that the future of snowmobiling lies in the hands of the next generation. It is our responsibility to mentor and guide these young riders to ensure our sport remains safe, vibrant, and respected for decades to come.
the Carver County Snowrunners, and am a volunteer trail boss for our local trail association, Southwest Trails. Being on the current E-Board as the Past President, I’d like to continue with this new board, as someone with experience and the ability to teach and mentor our newest members.
MnUSA means a great deal to me. In my 37 years of membership, I have served as director during two different periods encompassing 10 total years including two years as Lead Director. I serve on the MnSAC Committee, was honored to help on the Veterans Ride this last winter and look forward to future rides and was a past participant on The Black Woods Blizzard Tour.

I continue to prepare budgets, pro-formas, and projections of future revenues and challenges for these entities on monthly, quarterly and annual basis. I file 990N tax returns and participate in the state accounting system CTAS. I’m passionate about snowmobiling and have been riding since I was 6 years old. I’ve been a MnUSA member for 37 years. I’m the President of my local club,
» Garrett Laing, Nominee for Secretary I’ve been riding snowmobiles for 18 years and have done a ton of trail coordinating, leading group rides and planning trips. I’m in three clubs right now and have been on the board of one for eight years. I’ve been planning and leading group rides on my own for at least ten years. I started on a ‘99 Indy XC 600, then had a Fusion, a Ski-Doo for a bit, and now I’m back on a Polaris Assault. I’m getting more adventurous with my riding and the group leads we do. Snowmobiling is a year-round thing for me—helping people, working on sleds, and planning special memory trips with others. I’m hoping that by being the youngest nominee I can bring in some younger folks and get them more interested in MnUSA and the clubs. I also want to update some of the graphics and info for the MnUSA group. I hope to get your vote at the meeting this fall, and I’m really looking forward to supporting the association.

VINTAGE SNOWMOBILE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP Show & Swap The 21st Annual
The 21st Annual Vintage Snowmobile National Championship Show and Swap took place in Huron, South Dakota, August 7-9 at the Norby Exhibit Hall on the grounds of the South Dakota State Fairgrounds. Only the best of the best attended this event, and it sure showed in the quality and quantity of sleds, and display competitions that took place that weekend. Starting out overcast and cooler, although rain free, much like the area of South Dakota, many sleds from near and far started to show up. The Norby Exhibit Hall sports a very large exhibition space, large enough to support the whole show in one spot. Along with sleds, there was a nice representation of vendors that attended, along with food and drink provided for those attendees. Immediately outside the back of the building was the swap meet and primitive camping.
Cal and Linda Moser have made this event a labor of love, and spent a good deal of time, lining up the site, getting sponsors, and getting the plaques made for the many classes this event provides for. The plaques were made by a 79-year-old veteran in his spare time— excellent job! At Saturday night’s banquet, a good time was had by all, a delicious prime rib, half chicken dinner was served.

Also that evening, some nice words were said by Scott Gottschalck of the Gottschalk Museum in Kimball, Minnesota. Sunday was the tough day to make decisions on who was going to win, and in what order. Only first and second places were awarded, with honorable mention also. The judges had a very difficult time, which shows how well the competition is at the “best of the best” National Championship—the Super Bowl of Snowmobiles event. Next year’s show will be in Marshfield, Wisconsin on June 4, 5 and 6.

International Snowmobile Council Roundup by Scott Wakefield
Having a seat at the table is always a good thing when we get to tell the snowmobiling world what we are dealing with in Minnesota.
The 58th Annual International Snowmobile Congress took place earlier this summer, June 3-6 in Omaha, Nebraska. Hosted by the Nebraska State Snowmobile Association along with the Masters of Ceremonies Stan Stutheit and Jeff Kracl, the event was a huge success, with many interesting breakout sessions and many awards. Christine Jourdain received an outstanding award from President of ACSA, Dave Newman to kick off many awards throughout the week.
Every ISC has an off-site, and this one did not disappoint. We were bused out the United States Strategic Air Command and Aerospace Museum for a self-guided tour and a sit-down meal; what a fun evening for all. We had a good contingency representing Minnesota, including past president Greg Sorenson, Brad Thacher from Region 5, all the directors from Minnesota’s own Dave Guenther Dave “Speedy” Guenther addressing the large crowd Friday morning. Region 9, Jeff Alberts, Greg was the keynote speaker for our Strommen, Woody Widness and breakfast meeting on Friday. Dave gave an interesting his wife Janet, and as previously stated, Dave Guenther, speech about vintage sleds, his popular Pequot Show special guest Marlys Knutson, the Clevengers and and humorous stories throughout, including one about myself. Not pictured but attending was Wade Miller how he got a speeding ticket on the way down from and Cory (Bruce II) Wiebusch— Bruce Lawrence’s Pequot! replacement.

The event is a collaboration between clubs, associations, providences and manufacturers that can get together and talk about some of the issues facing the industry. MnUSA is a member of the International Snowmobile Media Council, which met during ISC. The discussion focused on getting more collaboration with the manufacturers providing content to the state associations for their publications.

just needs to produce a can or altered muffler system that conforms to the Minnesota law. The ACSA Trail Meeting and Ride will be February 3- 7, 2027 in Siren, Wisconsin, just across the border. It will be hosted by ACSA, the American Council of Snowmobile Associations, whom MnUSA is a member. The location features great trails in the Burnett County area, with over 300 miles of wonderful, groomed trails. Make sure to put it on your list of events to cover in 2027. In the ACSA Trails meeting, Minnesota was specifically discussed regarding the new ban on aftermarket cans. But, also said he thought the law was a violation of anti-trust laws, as the manufacturers are the only ones that have “compliant” exhaust systems now. Everyone had a great time at Saturday night’s banquet and live auction. One item that came up was a John C. Green painting which sold for $5,500! The most unique thing sold was the chance to shave off Illinois’ one and only Jason Long’s beard. Yours truly sold the opportunity to shave off his beard for $5,000…and off it went! Another guy in the audience, so enamored with this fun, agreed to the same, which went for $2,800! What a fun evening that was. A $5,000 beard cut—all for a good cause.
Next year, the ISC’s 59th annual event will be June 9-12, 2027, in Salt Lake City, Utah, at the Little America Hotel. Registration is open now.

Milestones Frances Ylatupa Passes Frances Ylatupa, 95, of Silver Bay, died Tuesday, June 23, 2026, at Keystone Bluffs in Duluth. Fran was born February 18, 1931, to Harold and Erma (Ohato) Hart in Littlefork, MN. Fran was an active member of MnUSA and the Silver Trail Riders. She enjoyed bowling, snowmobiling, camping, golfing, baking, playing dice & cards, spending time with her family and watching all her grandkids and great-grand kids play sports. She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Bill; children, Jeff (Pam) and Steve; grandchildren, Avery (Bobbi), Cassandra (Josh), Tina (Jay), Jesse (Crynessa), Janthony, Steven (Katrina) and Timothy (Denise); and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Chocolate Caramel Bars
2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour, divided 2 cups quick cooking oatmeal, uncooked 1 1/2 cups brown sugar, packed 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 1/2 cups butter or margarine, cold 12-ounce package semisweet chocolate chips 1 cup pecans, chopped 12-ounce jar caramel ice cream topping Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 9x13 baking pan. In a medium-size bowl, measure and combine 2 cups of flour, oats, brown sugar, baking soda and salt. Cut in butter until crumbly. Press half of the crumb mixture into the baking pan. Set aside the other half for the topping. Bake for 15 minutes. Sprinkle the chocolate chips and pecans evenly over the baked layer.
