The Season is Just Around the Corner

Welcome to our Summer Shows edition of Minnesota Snowmobiling Magazine! What great shows they were too! And, since we could only cover so many, we will focus on the early ones, including Milbank, the International Snowmobile Congress, and the 19th Annual Vintage Snowmobile National Championship. There are more we could’ve covered and will later in the season, Polaris’ 70th Anniversary and obviously Hay Days. What we will do is a preview of Hay Days in this issue; look for that.

The summer went so fast this year. It’s hard to believe we are back at it…and the Official Start of Snowmobiling is just around the corner. The MnUSA

Summer Event was held at the Battle Lake Lions Club Shelter and what a nice display of sleds Director Jeff Alberts brought along. More on the Summer Event later in this issue.

As you will see by the President’s and Vice President’s columns, everyone has been busy this summer, Christian Franzen does a synopsis of the Legislative Session, info on Fall Workshop and Rendezvous are included in this issue. Although last year was bummer of a year for snow, El Niño is long gone in the rearview mirror and La Niña is on her way in, which means lots of snow and cold for the upper Midwest. As they say, if you don’t like the weather in Minnesota, just wait a bit and it will change. Just think if all that rain was snow…. oh boy! See ya at Hay Days; stop by our booth!

What Lies Ahead From the MnUSA President

This year has proven to be one that takes a certain type of person to be a snowmobiler in the state of Minnesota. From a non-existent winter, with all its hopes for some type of precipitation, to hoping for at least a chance to ride somewhere in the state. Then came the spring rains that just would not quit, making it a task to be able to pull the trail markers that we did not get to use or enjoy. Also, the flooding that caused so much damage throughout the state, leaving work before the next snow season. This proves that we are a determined bunch to keep this sport alive for the people who enjoy it so much.

Then we have the volunteers who work so hard clearing, marking, and rebuilding trails and bridges. Always keeping our landowners in mind, when working so hard on the trails that they have graciously allowed us to pass through their property. All this work can be a thankless job for many of us who just get it done so others are able to enjoy the sport of snowmobiling. At this time, I would like to say THANK YOU to all volunteers, and for all you do for this great sport. Trails exist because you have committed to belonging to a club or association, taking on the challenge to keep MN one of the top riding destinations. Simply put, Trails Exist Because of Volunteers!

More work needs to be done and our organization needs your help. We need your financial support by joining MnUSA. Minnesota United Snowmobile Association has kept membership dues low at just $35. By keeping dues low, this ensures strength in numbers. MnUSA has a lobbyist that works to safeguard our snowmobiling rights while taking the time to reach legislators and emphasize our organization’s needs and wants. MnUSA has a Board of Directors numbering 50+ embedded into 9 regions throughout the state. These board members keep members informed as well as present concerns or ideas that benefit snowmobilers in many ways.

Since this issue will be distributed at the Sno-Barons Hay Days event, emphasis needs to be directed towards the snowmobiler who does not belong to MnUSA or know what MnUSA does to promote the sport. It is my hope that the participants at Hay Days read this article and wish to join should they not belong already.

Wisconsin and Michigan both require snowmobilers to belong to a club or association. Let’s prove that Minnesota doesn’t have to take these measures to ensure membership in our organization.

YOUR Board of Directors and the Executive Board are available to answer questions relating to MnUSA. This is your organization, and we work for all fellow snowmobilers! I have seen firsthand the enthusiasm that Hay Days brings each year, let’s get excited about what MnUSA can do for you—simply join, that’s all we ask!

To keep our organization going we rely on the willingness of people who put that extra effort forth. Our organization is looking for some individuals to step forward and become the voice of snowmobilers. One of the open chair positions is the Safety Committee. The Communications committee is also looking for a person who is skilled in social media to be able to reach out to the younger generation. This candidate, regardless of age, should be familiar with Facebook, Twitter, Instagram & YouTube to name a few. What a great way to become involved while using the tools you are already familiar with. Please reach out to me or an Executive Board member (listed in this magazine). Any of us would be willing to discuss these openings.

From the MnUSA President

Moving onto more business at hand. This year my wife and I attended the International Snowmobile Congress (ISC) in Green Bay, WI. We have attended other ISC events in the past but not in this capacity, as representatives of the State of Minnesota and MnUSA. Others attending were Director at Large Scott Wakefield (serving as MN Delegate) and Greg Sorenson. Greg is a member of the American Council of Snowmobile Associations (ACSA) Trespassing Committee. Another MN group represented was one of MnUSA’s biggest clubs, the Sno-Baron’s, who were promoting their upcoming Hay Days Event. According to the Wisconsin delegation Minnesota had the largest contingency. Proximity helped secure this feat.

An emphasis at the ISC was to involve the youth. ACSA has formed a group now called Future Leaders. This group focuses on a deeper understanding of snowmobiling and organization functions. They also support leadership and youth interaction. The youth want their ideas heard and they want to be asked to be involved. The Future Leaders group is comprised of two age groups, 16 to 20 and 21 to 30, members are stair stepping into leadership roles while utilizing technology to engage in activities.

ACSA is divided into two groups—Mountain & Trail. Both groups met separately and together as part of the congress. A concern for both groups is the Biden 30/30 plan. 30% of Federal land and 30% of Federal waters will be removed from recreation by 2030 and 50/50 by 2050. This is an issue all of us must be watching! Reach out to federal legislators to express what this would mean to the economy.

The International Snowmobile Manufacturers Association (ISMA) shared these figures regarding the economic impact snowmobiling has. Outdoor Recreation accounts for $1.1 Trillion. In addition, gas/fuel is $304 million along with $465 million attributed to motor vehicles and parts. These numbers speak for themselves. The Recreational Trail Program (RTP) funding relies on the gas tax. We must communicate to our legislators on the federal level that this source of income is vital to our sport, and our share needs to be distributed back to the snowmobiling community.

As a side note – Jan 23-26, 2025 the Trails Group will have a ride at Fortune Bay, Tower, MN. Anyone may attend this event. ACSA will have more information on this at a later date.

ISC is an event where there is a lot of comradery, information sharing, problem solving and in general great fun. Meetings along with breakout sessions take place during the week. Such discussions included the topics of trespassing, loud exhaust, magazine ideas, how to make social media work for you, snowmobile friendly communities, leadership, RTP program, future snowmobiles coming into the market, along with additional topics. Every meeting we attended had a great amount of knowledge shared.

As your President, I am looking forward to seeing fellow snowmobilers at Hay Days, or at any of the many upcoming events. MnUSA will have a booth at as many functions as possible, provided volunteers sign up to man these booths. Snow is just around the corner and the unofficial start of winter is near!

From the MnUSA Vice President

Well, everyone, this is the September issue of Minnesota Snowmobiling which means snowmobile season is just around the corner. Clubs and trail associations are gearing up for trail work so please, as you head out, be safe and thank you for the time you spend volunteering to keep our trail systems alive!

As you’re gearing up for the new season, I would like to extend an invite challenge to all our general members in MN to attend the fall workshop in October on the weekend of the 25th -27th at Black Bear Casino in Carlton, MN, hosted by MnUSA Region 7. Over the years of attending these events, I have learned so much and have met a whole bunch of great people that have

been great resources for me as a trail coordinator. I have learned about the behind the scenes of maintaining trail systems across the state that, as a club member, I never understood thoroughly until I started attending these MnUSA events. I once heard a club president tell his club that these meetings are boring. I believe they are what YOU make them. So, with that said, please join us in October and don’t forget the Winter Rendezvous in February too (6th-9th) in Bemidji, MN, hosted by MnUSA Region 1. Registration is open for both events at this time.

MnUSA is looking for a new Safety Committee Chairperson as Mark Steinmueller has stepped down from the Fundraising Committee and I have moved over to chair that myself. We are currently working feverishly on getting the 2025 calendar together with hopes of having it available to purchase at the Hay Days Grass Drags and Swap Meet September 7th and 8th.

A reminder on signing of trails too as you are getting geared up for the upcoming season, make sure all crossroads have their stop signs in place and stop ahead signs are in place as well; try not to use too many caution signs and when you do use a caution sign, try to put what the caution is on the sign. I have seen around the state where clubs have put a square sign on the back side of a stop sign facing the opposite direction. It looks nice, but remember, in a lawsuit you may face the fact that you have changed the shape of that stop sign and a good attorney will use that against you in the case of an accident. Just a couple pointers to think about as you head out this fall to do signing and trail maintenance.

Let’s all pray that the rain we have been getting this summer turns to SNOW this winter and gives us that nice dose of white gold to enjoy our winter on. See you on the trails!

Legislative News

The Legislature ended with a bang, or maybe it was more of a chaotic boom. 2024 was the second year of the biennium leading to the 2024 election in which only the House of Representatives is on the ballot. As with every legislative year very little turned out as expected.

Our number one priority protecting landowners was successful (Thank you, Chair Rick Hansen) including fine increases regarding unlawful noise. Also, the following language was included: “All after-market mufflers installed on snowmobile must have a permanent stamp, clearly visible on the muffler, certified by the muffler manufacturer and stating that the muffler conforms to the snowmobile muffler noise limits specified by the rules of the commissioner.

The language was adopted, effective as of July 1st, 2024, and included in the Conference Committee report (Thank you, Chairman Foung Hawj),

MnUSA’s construction and maintenance sales tax exemption language was included in the Senate version in the Tax Omnibus bill and accepted by the House Tax Committee. Yet when the final bill was introduced on the last day, the exemption was NOT included. The Tax bill did include IRRRB grants for:

$75,000 to the Vermilion Penguins Snowmobile Club and $75,000 to the Cook Timberwolves Snowmobile Club, to update maintenance equipment and trail programs; and grants of $25,000 to be used for trail grooming costs or equipment for local surrounding snowmobile and ATV clubs.

Despite an unexpected, partisan, and bizarre legislative session (and I haven’t even brought up Sen. Mitchell’s arrest and criminal charges), MnUSA succeeded. Increased penalties and noise compliance bill protecting landowners is now law. We protected our trails.

MnUSA Summer Event

The MnUSA Summer Event was held on the beautiful shores of Battle Lake at the Battle Lake Lions Club picnic shelter. Thanks to Region 9 for hosting and Woody for making the beans! Jeff Alberts, Region 9 Director from Detroit Lakes brought his herd of Yamaha sleds, including some very old original one’s right up to current. Jeff really has a passion for his Yamahas and it shows in what he has in his collection.

The food is always a highlight at the Summer Event. I often wonder if that’s the reason most people go... yep! But also, we have to make time per the bylaws to have a General Membership meeting which we did at 1p.m. President Mike Clevenger and Director at Large Scott Wakefield along with Greg Sorensen, all of who were in attendance, besides a lot of folks from Minnesota, including other MnUSA members, and a lot of Sno-Baron’s, gave an update on the International Snowmobile Congress (ISC) held this year in Green

Bay, Wisconsin, hosted by the Association of Wisconsin Snowmobile Clubs (AWSC). It was a great event with lots of breakouts and lots of fun!

There was no DNR in attendance at the Summer Event so we went with Kelly Hesli, Office Administrator, and Randy Vannet, Region 2 Director from Grand Rapids, gave an update on where they are at on the website at this time and the member management system being made available to those clubs that choose to use it. Randy has stepped up to assist after the unfortunate passing of our former Vice President Timothy Heinen who was working on the remodel of the website. A lengthy discussion ensued regarding Website Committee Recommendations for bylaw changes and membership processes regarding membership structure; simplifying membership options to Individual Family Membership, Business Membership, and Club/Trail Associations. We

MnUSA News

Information about the Fall Workshop hosted by Region 7 and Rendezvous hosted by Region 1 was given. A bylaw change was discussed regarding a change to the Spring Meeting as requested by the American Council of Snowmobile Associations (ACSA), as we always end up with a conflict to attend the ACSA Washington DC Fly-In. The proposed bylaw change is to move the Spring Meeting up a week. Also discussed were upcoming booths at Princeton Grass Drags, Aug. 23-24th and Hay Days Sept. 7-8th and a booth at the Polaris 70th Under Region Reports, Allen Beumer, Region 3 Director from Hillman, brought up a great helmet fitting and give away for youth at Hilmerson Sports Center in Little Falls, where hundreds of youths received new helmets. Find more information in this issue of Minnesota Snowmobiling Magazine.

Christian Franzen gave a Legislative Update regarding the loud pipes language bill MnUSA presented and got passed. Fines are similar to the trespassing legislation we passed last year - first offence $250, second offence $500 and 3rd offence $1,000. The muffler has to be stock or it must be certified to meet the requirements of the rule “Go Stock, it’s the Way to Go”!

We discussed open committee chairs and then started the election process. A nomination was made for Mike Clevenger for President, and the nomination was left open until the Fall Workshop; a nomination was made for Scotty Harder for Vice President and the nomination was left open until the Fall Workshop; a nomination for Secretary for Janet Widness was made and left open for Fall Workshop; and finally, a nomination for Gordon Heitke was made for Treasurer and left open for the Fall Workshop, where the nominations will be offered again.

discussed multi-year renewals; primary club designation for those with multiple clubs they belong to; elimination of XM Memberships; and removing the XM Program. Potential bylaw language and SRO language was presented, along with fiscal notes, on the changes and effect on MnUSA finances.

We then took a break and started in on the Director’s meeting. A motion was made and passed to correct a budget item from the Spring Meeting; people were requested again to sign up for the Princeton Grass Drags and Hay Days; discussed Spring Meeting location; discussed the ASCA dues breakdown, and adjourned. Overall, we had a great meeting and a great chance to get together again in the summer, had some great food, great discussions, and gotta love those Yamahas!

Jeff Alberts’ fine collection of Yamahas.

2024 International Snowmobile Congress

The 2024 International Snowmobile Congress (ISC) was held in Green Bay, Wisconsin, in June, hosted by the Association of Wisconsin Snowmobile Clubs (AWSC). Early show events started on Wednesday with the customary Friends Of Snowmobiling PAC Fundraiser and Welcome Reception. Thursday started the opening of the Congress with full honor guard, Presentation of the Flags of the United States and Canada, and the singing of each national anthem; the groomer and trade shows opened up and the meetings started, including the American Council of Snowmobile Associations (ACSA) Mountain and Trail groups.

At the ACSA meeting, we had the fun of having a live auction selling off a hooded t-shirt, never seen one of those before, and, of course, the traveling trophy. They also conducted a “Dutch” auction, so if you bid, you are bound by the bid and still pay even if you didn’t get the top bid. Bidding was at a frenzy level. The day concluded with an “offsite” “on site” social with Oneida Dancers for entertainment and broasted chicken, with a tribal cuisine twist, for dinner.

Friday was the traditional International Snowmobile Manufacturers Association’s (ISMA) Ed Klim’s presentation on snowmobile sales throughout the United States, Canada, and the world. Numbers overall were down due to a lack of snow. More importantly, it was the official passing of the guard, so to speak, with Jared Smith taking over for Ed Klim who has decided to retire.

After breakfast it was time to shed some energy and attend many of the great breakout seminars put on by the AWSC, including, but not limited to, How to Make Social Media Work for You, Tourism 101, Future Snowmobiles Coming Into the Market, Snowmobile Friendly Communities, Leadership from Youth to Leadership Roles, Trespass Roundtable, Magazine Roundtable, and Breaking down Barriers, to just name a few. Friday wrapped up with the Groomer Reception,

Marlys Knutson at the podium.
Retiring Ed Klim (left) passing the baton to incoming Jared Smith (right).

and our 2025 ISC host, Prince Edward Island, provided a hospitality room.

Saturday continued with great breakouts and meetings after breakfast with the 3 Old Guys, telling their story about their adventure to Alaska from Minnesota.

The Sno-Baron’s Snowmobile Club had a booth, reminding attendees of Hay Days, the Official Start of Winter, and they had a huge contingency from the club in attendance, all while continuing to bid up items during the silent auction. But the best is yet to come; at the banquet that evening our centerpieces had mini snowballs on each table. With over 400 in attendance, that’s a lot of snowballs. It didn’t take long for a Sno-Baron, to start an exciting trend tossing snowballs, and pretty soon the whole room was full of snowballs being tossed around. What fun we all had. Big smiles, and after what we went through last year without any snow, it was very cathartic for everyone.

Incidentally, with the large contingency from the SnoBaron’s, and many others from MnUSA, Minnesota won the trophy for the most attendees at this years’ 2024 ISC! Way to go Minnesota!

Lori Heideman, and Sue Smedegard, the Congress CoChairs, did an excellent job all week and weekend long, and, along with the other 37 committee members, pulled off a great ISC. Now those on the committee for 2025 in Prince Edward Island will have their work cut out for them big time. But those young Canadians sure seem to have a lot of “bravado” so we will have to see what’s in store for those attending the 57th Annual International Snowmobile Congress June 11th-14th in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. 2025 registration is open at this time. If interested, go to www.snowmobilers.org/isc/ or reach out to the office.

Notice of Annual General Membership Meeting and Proposed Changes in By-Laws

The annual General Membership meeting of Minnesota United Snowmobilers Association will be held on Saturday, October 26, 2024, at the Black Bear Casino, Carlton, MN. Minnesota Snowmobile Education and Advancement Fund (MSEAF) will be ordering corridor and amenity signs for clubs on October 1st. If your club is in need of these signs, please place your order as soon as possible. Sign order forms are available by request from MSEAF at nancy@popp.net. If your club trail system is part of the corridor trail system, corridor signs are required to comply with your DNR grant. Thank you for the work you do to provide an excellent snowmobile trail system in Minnesota.

For $59, your club will be listed in the December issue of Snow Goer magazine along with an article promoting clubs; on SnowGoer.com with a link; with social media and e-newsletters. Your club will also be found online on the club locator map and your club will receive the article for its own use. The deadline to participate is September 15, 2024. Information on how to participate has been mailed to the clubs. For sign-up forms and more information, contact Jerry Hanson at hansonjn@msn.com.

The new RAS RX front suspension adds race-proven geometry reducing body roll for fl atter, more predictable cornering. Paired with the new stepped keel design of the Pilot RX skis, riders can confidently choose — and hold — their line in any snow conditions, putting them further ahead of the pack.

Hay Days Preview 2024

The OFFICIAL Start to Winter is just around the corner. The 57th Annual Hay Days, the iconic, historic, world-breaking, excitement-inducing, “bestest snowmobile event of the year is about to begin. That’s right, the Sno-Baron’s Snowmobile Club is proud to bring all of us the fun and excitement Hay Days brings on Saturday, September 7 through Sunday, September 8, 2024, on the Sno-Baron’s grounds east of North Branch on MN 95.

For some of us who have been going to Hay Days since the mid ‘80s, it’s so nice to see our young event grow into the mature and diverse event it is today. Back in the day of the Tilt’en Hilton, and being divided by a grass race track, and walking back and forth all day, now it’s all laid out perfectly. And it’s not just about snowmobiles roaring down the track at 100 mph, it’s about the swap, new swag and gear, Memory Lane, and anything off-road flying thru the air, and now big bad mud madness. What will they think of next?

Throngs of people make Hay Days the biggest snowmobile event of the year
The “new” Memory Lane permanent building—check it out !

Speaking of Memory Lane, this year, working with the Sno-Baron’s and Midwest Vintage Snow Shows (MVSS), an agreement and commitment for years to come was made between the two entities and, alas, we have a brand-new structure on the grounds. If you have never been, this is the year to come check it out.

The Swap Meet is always a popular stop on your Hay Days tour.

The MVSS theme for 2025’s show is Yamaha, so come see some of the best there is from our manufacturer across the pond.

Make sure to stop by our MnUSA booth, up in the trees by the food vendors. We will have fun stuff for you to register for the kiddies, candy, and it’s a great time to stop and renew your membership, say hi, and hang out. We will have registration information about the Fall Workshop at the Black Bear Casino available, and information on Rendezvous in Bemidji, February of 2025.

If it’s your “First Time” or your “millionth time” to Hay Days, you can’t ever not love all the excitement this event brings. Start saving your cash now for all the goodies, you need…either brand new or slightly used, Hay Days has everything you will ever need for your snowmobile fun!

Hillman Youth Support Lids 4 Kids Helmet Fest

On June 1, Hilmerson Sports Center and the MLMB (Mt. Morris, Lakin, Morrill, Buckman Townships)

First Response Team from Eastern Morrison County held their second annual youth helmet awareness event. 526 kids received new helmets that day. Thousands of dollars were donated by many businesses, private individuals and user groups, including five snowmobile clubs, to sponsor the event. Helmets were available to kids up to age 16.

The helmets were not just handed out. The kids needed to go through seven safety stations to get a punch on their entry card. Each station took a couple of minutes and after the card was filled, participants could go and get a voucher for $100 dollars towards a new helmet. Many volunteers, including representatives from a few manufacturers, were fitting the helmets to make sure helmets were the correct size.

The Hillman Swamp Stompers Snowmobile Club youth group was one of the safety stops on punch card. They spoke about our youth safety training and importance of belonging to a club to keep trails safely marked.

Hot dogs, chips and water were donated and served on a Lids 4 Kids Frisbee.

Celebrating 70 Years of Polaris at the Milbank Show

Milbank, South Dakota, is just a short jaunt across the border into South Dakota at Ortonville in Swift County, MN, but boy it seems like you’re in another world. The air seems cleaner, the vibe is less tense, your shoulders droop, and everyone is so nice. Just a short drive from the cities, the iconic location of this Vintage Show, makes the drive worth it. Located in the Lake Farley Park with the lake to the west and a dam to the north, the outlet river runs right along the walkway around the park. And guess where the snowmobiles are set up—along the walkway around the park. With mature trees and always a breeze, it’s a beautiful setting for an early summer show. This year was no exception with beautiful weather both Friday and Saturday, and, as always, a great snowmobile trivia contest, great food, great live auction, but, most importantly, great sleds, and displays. Snowmobilers from as far as Montana to New York bring their sleds to this show for coveted prize plaques and great camaraderie. Cal Moser wouldn’t be able to pull this off without his great sponsors, and his great “crew” for the weekend.

how hard it was to get something produced back in the day. Today, it seems if you get an idea, in a week you have a 3-D image and marketing materials and you’re on the road selling. Not so back in the day.

One of the early Polaris sleds with a fiberglass hood, and only built for the 1965 season, the idea was to have a small but sporty sled. The little machine was powered by either a 6 hp Lauson or an 8 hp JLO engine; the overall weight of the machine 250 lbs. and was succeeded by the Colt, which went on to have its own historic run.

This years’ theme was “Polaris” as it’s their 70th anniversary and added this year was a special guest. Being it’s Polaris, Lil’ Andy inventor Andy Wells and his son did an excellent presentation on the start of the Lil’ Andy project, including a lot about his life in general. It was a real eye opener on

Incidentally, the Antique Snowmobile Club of America had a Lil’ Andy sled that the club members put together at Bill Thelemann’s in LeSeur, MN, for their annual raffle sled. What a great job by all those involved putting this iconic and historical sled together.

It was hard to have to drive back to Minny; guy cut me off in Hutch, phone was ringing, and traffic was flying by at breakneck speed. Back to the grind, as they say, as my time in Milbank provided some respite from reality.

19th Annual Vintage Snowmobile National Championship

The 19th Annual Vintage Snowmobile National Championship landed in beautiful downtown Duluth at the DECC Arena on a warm and muggy weekend in a town known for cool summer breezes off the big lake, Lake Superior. Trailers of sleds started showing up as early as Thursday afternoon for a Friday, Saturday, Sunday show and swap. The last time the event was in Minnesota was back in 2018 in Rochester and was very well attended with only the “Best of the Best” being the mantra of those attending.

In fact, this show highlights the “best of the best” as it may, with some wonderful full displays. By full displays we mean a line-up of a particular brand; many sleds, some in chronological order; or however the unique owner behind the sleds likes. Or, as you see in the pictures, the great selection of Moto Ski’s on display, the Ice Fishing Display, called the “Saginaw Bay Michigan, Ice Fishing Special”. Look at the covering over that old 1968 Arctic Cat Panther P-18, pulling a pop-up fish house/tent for camping and then the actual fish house pulled behind.

Lots of memorabilia is also on display like the Cat patches. Now who has all those patches? Wouldn’t want to buy one of each back in the day? Speaking of wanting things from back in the day, how about that nice line of Normatt originals with the boxes? So, what’s worth more the sleds or the boxes? Yamaha made the announcement last year suspending the production of snowmobiles. Well as you can see here, the nice display of Yamaha’s legacy is well represented. “End of an Era but the Legacy Lives On” is so true.

The swap meet was particularly nice this time of year with no snow in the face, or cold fingers trying to pry some cash out of your hands. And there were lots of goodies waiting to change hands all weekend long.

Overall, the best of the best is right; great sleds, unique sleds competing in nine Unrestored as Raced Condition and nine Restored Condition Classes and also eight One Class – Only Classes of (Unrestored and Restored) resulting in a National Champion, Best of Show Original, and a DECC Directors Choice. Also, there are classes for Mini Sleds, Race 1985-Present Day, 1986-2004 Classic Sleds, Custom/ Clone, Youth Class (15 years or younger displayer), Cutter, Snowmobile Clothing, and Display class as alluded to earlier. All snowmobiles were required to be “capable” of running to be judged, so need to have an engine, carburetor, fuel line, gas tank, but no gas. Race Classes were separated between leaf springs and IFS’s.

In addition to all the great sleds, both Saturday and Sunday, Tim Pederson, son of Walt Pederson—the Plaisted Polar Expedition to the North Pole’s mechanic and chaplain—shared 56 years of old slides, film and audio from the expedition that rewrote history, which was very cool and historically significant.

A great weekend was had by all, and next year the 20th Annual Vintage Snowmobile National Show will take place June 13,14, and 15th in Dunkirk, New York, at the Chautauqua County Fairgrounds.

COUNTY Annual Landowners Appreciation Picnic

The four Scott County snowmobile clubs held their 50th Annual Landowners Appreciation Picnic on July 14th, 2024, with over 400 landowners in attendance. These landowners allow and permit use of their land for our 250 miles of GIA snowmobile trails. Club volunteers cooked and served more than 900 pounds of chicken including all the fixings of coleslaw, potato salad, beans, buns, and desserts provided by our club members.

PROUD TO BE YOUR TRAIL GROOMING PARTNER IN MINNESOTA

info provided by Terry Hutchinson

One of the other highlights of this event is our Scott County Sheriffs bring their two patrol sleds and allow the kids in attendance to sit on them and operate the LED lights, with their parents taking lots of pictures. The officers also sit at our registration desk and ask landowners if they need anything or had any problems with snowmobiling last season that they can help resolve. If you want great enforcement from your law enforcement group, you need to establish and maintain a relationship with them like our clubs do. We ask for and receive patrols during the snowmobile season in the areas that we are having trespass and other issues. They also write tickets instead of warnings as we have stressed the importance of snowmobilers understanding and obeying the laws.

Being this was our 50th annual event, we also purchased and gave each landowner family an insulated shopping bag, a screwdriver with 12 tips, a mug, a deck of cards, and a note pad, all with our Sno-Trails logo. This was a great hit and we received a lot of thanks for thinking of and appreciating our landowners.

Hamel Rodeo Parade Club News

Again this summer, the Hamel Sno-Runners had a float in the July Hamel Rodeo Parade. The float attracted some NEW members and attention for upcoming season. Club members will display the club’s groomer at their booth and be helping kids build bird houses at Corcoran Country Days in August. We are busy polishing equipment and prepping for upcoming landowners’ appreciation picnic. Remember SNOW fixes everything. — Dick Theis

Summer Hummer

Over eighty people attended the 2nd Annual “Summer Hummer” multi-club team-building event at the Red Wing River View Riders’ trail shelter, overlooking Welch, on a stellar evening, Thursday, July 18. Members of five snowmobile clubs were present: Red Wing, Hastings Sno-Mo’s, Wells Creek Riders of Frontenac, GoodhueBellechester Rail Riders, and the Farmington Sno-Tigers.

This event was a celebration of the teamwork these local club members practice, both within their clubs, and externally, among neighboring clubs, to keep our area trail system excellent.
