Triple Wars by Valdi Stefanson It’s the early 1990s, and Polaris is on a big run with the INDY chassis. Meanwhile, the horsepower race is full steam. Rumors abound...
So, the management at Polaris calls in the Engineering Department and instructs them to cram into their tried-and-true INDY twin-cylinder bulkhead…a triple-cylinder block. Oh, and by the way, three pipes as well to enhance output and drive sales. “Got it?”

The result? The 1993 introduction of the Storm. Just look at that exhaust plumbing. All under the traditional INDY hood.
It’s a great-sounding machine, but at 750cc in its inaugural year, when the new Arctic Cat Thundercat was at 900cc, you can estimate the result. The next year, displacement was bumped up to 800cc by Polaris.

The same thing happened with Yamaha. But, instead of a three-cylinder power plant, their first year (1992) muscle class introduction was an inline four-cylinder! The V-Max 4 displacement grew to 800cc by 1995. Ditto for the Ski Doo Mach Z that started at 750cc but was bumped to 800cc.
Should you be interested in these sweet-sounding “tripletriples,” I’d suggest you attend the late January Midwest Ride-In at ERX Motorsports Park in Elk River. This World’s Largest vintage snowmobile show features TRIPLE WARS this year. Learn more at www.mwvss.com and we will see you there!
