President's Report Vicky Garrison

As I reflect on the message I want to convey in this month's article, my mind keeps returning to the familiar phrase, "It takes a village." June is nomination month for members wishing to serve with our chapter board of directors.

Because of the unique nature of our organization, coupled with the fact that our board consists only of members, it truly does take a village!

To run for a three-year position with our board requires only a heart to help and a desire to serve members while fulfilling our mission. If this is you, please think about submitting your name. If you know someone who would fit the bill, ask them if you can offer their name.

As we strive to serve our brother and sister veterans with spinal cord injury and disease, we envision many opportunities for expanding our chapter's activities and participation. Fresh eyes, insights, and experiences keep an organization alive and growing.

Do you genuinely believe that having a spinal cord injury or disease doesn't need to hold you back from successfully engaging in life, helping others, and expanding your horizons? I wholeheartedly do, and I hope you do too! Call me today if you have questions about serving with the MNPVA leadership.

Election News Nomination period closes on June 30. Election ballots will be mailed by July 15th. This mailing will include two return envelopes. One will be an “inside” security envelope, marked "ballot envelope" Another will be a postage-paid, pre-addressed return envelope. Follow these steps: 1. Fill out your ballot with your choices 2. Place your ballot in the "Ballot Envelope" and seal 3. Place the ballot envelope in the postage paid envelope provided. All addresses are already on the envelope 4. Mail your ballot to be postmarked by August 29

Important Notes: Ballots must be received in the provided return envelope, stamped, and postmarked, if mailed.

Ballot will not be counted if any part of the return address is blacked out. If your address is incorrect, please contact the office right away.

National Service Officer’s Corner: Tami J. Anderson, SNSO Protecting what is OURS: As we may or may not know, there are a lot of scams circulating with one goal, to get access to our money and/or to get us to send the scammers money.

The Department of Veterans Affairs sent the information below regarding the Pension Poaching Campaign, What is Pension Poaching? Pension poaching is a financial scam targeting Veterans, survivors and their families who are potentially eligible for VA benefits.

An example of a pension poaching scam is someone with malicious intent profiting financially from assisting a Veteran and artificially qualifying them for VA Pension benefits. If Pension benefits are approved and VA later determines that eligibility did not actually exist, the claimant would be required to repay these benefits to the government. To educate and prevent fraud, VA sent a letter and email to approximately 162,000 Veterans over the age of 65 and in receipt of VA Pension benefits. This outreach provided resources for Veterans on how to prevent fraud, as well as resources for anyone who believes they have been a victim.

Another resource for protecting what is ours is the The National Council on Aging posted an article dated February 19, 2021 stating “the FBI estimates that seniors lose more than $3 billion each year to fraudsters”. The scammers target the elder population because they believe they have wealth, to include low-income seniors. The scammers are no respecter of person, both wealthy and low-income seniors are vulnerable to financial abuse.

It has also been documented in the article that over 90% of all reported elder abuse is committed by a family member, first their own children, or grand children and nieces and nephews. As a National Service Officer, I unfortunately have seen this first hand, parents taking from their veteran child that was severely disabled from an IED and spouses abusing their veteran husband/wife for their money. If a veteran feels he/she is being financial abused, let your physician know, they can request the VA to name a fiduciary on your behalf.

The following are 10 popular scams and a brief description: 1. Government imposter scam – calling victims and stating they are from the IRS, SS and/or Medicare and threatening them if they do not pay up.

2. The Grandparent scam – calling a grandparent and pretending to be a grandchild asking them for money for an unspecified bill and ask them to not tell anyone. The scammer will ask them to pay in gift cards and/or money transfer due to not always requiring identification.

3. Medicare/health insurance scams – the scammers pose as a Medicare representative and ask them for their personal information, or offer bogus medical services at makeshift mobile clinics, then bill Medicare or health care.

4. Computer tech support scam – the scammers prey on the lack of knowledge elders have when it comes to computers equipment. The scammer may ask for remote access or you have to pay a fee. The Federal Trade Commission found that “seniors who fell for this lost an average of $500 each to computer tech support scams in 2018”.

5. Sweepstakes & Lottery scam – the scammer calls and states you have won and need to send money to unlock the supposed prize.

6. Robocalls/phone scams – one popular robocall was the “Can you hear me?” call and they record your voice and use it for a voice signature to authorize unwanted charges on items like credit cards.

7. Romance scams – scammers exploit lonely elders on dating sites.

8. Internet and email fraud – Phishing emails and text messages.

9. Elder financial abuse – this is carried out by someone the elder person knows.

10. Charity scams – call claiming they are collecting money for a good cause

This is a difficult subject because we do not want to feel that we are vulnerable, however, we need to be realistic with ourselves and ask for assistance when needed.

Additional VA news: Presumptive service connection for Gulf War Toxic Exposure: VA has added 12 conditions to the list of disabilities presumptively connected to toxic exposure for Gulf War Veterans who served in the Southwest Asia theater of operations. These conditions include asthma, sinusitis, rhinitis and nine respiratory cancers Squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx.

Adenocarcinoma of the trachea.

Salivary gland-type tumors of the trachea.

Adenosquamous carcinoma of the lung.

Large cell carcinoma of the lung.

Salivary gland-type tumors of the lung.

Sarcomatoid carcinoma of the lung.

Typical and atypical carcinoid of the lung If a veteran served in the Southwest Asia theater of operations beginning August 2, 1990 to present, Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Syria or Dijouti beginning September 19, 2001 to present. The Department of Veterans Affairs will contact veterans and survivors who have been impacted.

Drone Opportunity Attention, MNPVA members! We have a member who recently acquired a drone and wants to connect with other members who have one. MS Membership Update On May 31st, 2022, the Paralyzed Veterans of America announced they expanded PVA membership to all veterans with a diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis. The change recognizes the MS Committee as a permanent committee of the Board of Directors. They help advocate for the everyday interests of veterans with MS, among other things. Midwest PVA Fishing Event Once again, the Minnesota and Iowa Chapters of Paralyzed Veterans of America bring you the annual Midwest PVA Fishing Event on August 21-27, 2022.

This fantastic recreation event provides an entire week of fishing, boating, and social activities for approximately 30 paralyzed veteran heroes and their caregivers at Veterans on Lake Resort in Ely, MN. Veterans on the Lake Resort, a non-profit organization, holds the sole purpose of providing a recreational facility for disabled veterans to enjoy. Nestled in the Superior National Forest adjacent to Fall Lake, this beautiful resort contains over 2,700 feet of shoreline. Offerings include fishing from boats, pontoons, and off the dock. Veterans on the Lake Resort has approximately 25 handicapped accessible cabins to house our attendees. Other features include V-bottom boats for use by more mobile anglers and pontoon boats for use by all of our participants.

More Information: Fishing gear is available for those participants who do not have equipment.

All participants are encouraged to bring their own tackle and fishing gear, including wet-weather clothing.

Boats and life jackets will be provided.

Personal boats, life jackets, tackle, and fishing gear are allowed if desired.

Gas for personal boats would be covered for fishing activities.

Participants will be responsible to get their boat to and from the resort.

Lodging and Meals provided Spots limited and filled in order of registration All participating veterans must be members of either MN or IA chapters Registration fee: $50

We are in the process of arranging Sports and Recreation sessions at Northern Star Base Camp. Potential events include air guns, archery, boccia ball, and more. As we formulate a schedule, we ask that members let us know if you are interested in attending by calling or emailing us. Regular, organized sports and recreation sessions provide excellent opportunities to get out, get active, and get social!

Our chapter continues to have very active bowling groups that meet weekly.

Please call or email the office if you’re interested in joining, and if there isn’t a local group, we can help get the word out to form one. All skill levels are welcome, and no commitment is required.

ADA 32nd Anniversary - Save the Date On July 26, the ADA 32nd Anniversary event will celebrate that “Minnesota has more to explore.” The free, 90-minute virtual event from 12noon to 1:30 p.m. will showcase a variety of accessible programs, activities, and facilities that offer a range of options to explore the great outdoors (some, even from indoors!). After more than two long years of coping with the Covid-19 pandemic, the ADA anniversary planning committee is organizing a celebration that will help us reconnect with one another and nature in new and exciting ways. Plan to join this informative, fun event to learn about a variety of organizations, state agencies, and others that offer a range of accessible adventures across our state. The event is free and open to the public.

Research News Research is a core part of our mission. We accomplish this mission in a multitude of ways. Visit the National PVA website Research section to see the passion for this vital area.

At the chapter level, we can also be a part of the mission. Our chapter maintains connections with researchers in the SCI/D arena. These dedicated scientists study the spinal cord and seek to understand and improve the secondary manifestations such as pain, pressure sores, bladder, bowel, spasticity, and many more.

I've participated in studies relating to pressure mapping on wheelchair cushions, visual ways for self-inspection of skin and body, studies that involved a simple blood sample, and a study aimed at coping with and minimizing pain.

I've participated in medical student interview skills sessions to help them gain more comfort and familiarity with SCI patients. Whether a lengthy or short study, I never once came away regretting it but instead felt very positive and fulfilled, knowing I helped another person.

To keep our members informed and help our researchers in the area, MNPVA will routinely publish information about studies received from researchers in the SCI/D arena. While we want to support and inform, we cannot offer medical advice or information relating to the research. As always, we encourage you to get medical advice from your medical providers and make the best decision based on your needs and situation.
