He will share his story as a nature photgrapher and discuss his techniques and views of how photographs can connect the viewer to nature. Instructor Jason Huntzinger is best known for his atmospheric images of Duluth. After this workshop, your concept of a photographic self-portrait will never be the same. You will investigate the idea of the photographic equivalent, concentrating on the work of Minor White, widely considered one of the great photographers of the 20th century.

Published writer and educator Jules Nyquist, whose latest poetry chapbook is “Appetites: Poems on Food, Drink, Sex” (Beatlick Press, 2010) will show you how to use food as a metaphor through writing exercises that draw upon cultural images toward food, food rituals and preparation, gender, politics, body image and hunger. Explore fiction and poetry selections about gastronomy and art. Optional class reading sharing your work in the last class. The class will be followed by a reading by Jules from her work.

MUSIC Baroque composer Antonio Vivaldi created some of the most beloved classics of Western music, including the string-rich Four Seasons, which is the subject of this Music in the Garden series.

In the third of three music appreciation sessions dedicated to his work, you will revel in a garden setting similar to what inspired this work. You will delve into the composer’s life and times and listen to and explore how he evoked the leaning landscapes and summer heat in the concerto Summer. You will also delight in other favorites with acclaimed musicologist and pianist Daniel Freeman, Ph.D. Freeman has taught courses in music history at the University of Minnesota, other universities, and the Smithsonian Institution, and his research has focused on the music of composers Bach, Mozart, and Vivaldi.

Brower has dedicated his research to the overwintering and migration biology of the monarch butterfly and the conservation of endangered ecosystems. As Distinguished Service Professor of Zoology Emeritus at the University of Florida and Research Professor of Biology at Sweet Briar College, he includes among his achievements the Royal Entomological Society of London Marsh Award, numerous scientific papers, films, and books. Brower is currently writing his magnum opus on the monarch for Harvard University Press and working to protect overwintering forests in Mexico.
