Carla van de Puttelaar FR Carla van de Puttelaar (née en 1967, Zaandam, Pays-Bas) est diplômée de la Gerrit Rietveld Academy d'Amsterdam en 1996. Lauréate du Prix Esther Kroon (1996) et du Prix de Rome Basic Prize (2002), elle est nominée pour le Prix ­Découverte des Rencontres d’Arles en 2006. Son travail jouit d’une reconnaissance mondiale et est exposé dans de nombreux musées et galeries à travers le monde. Ses photographies sont publiées dans de nombreuses publications et dans sept monographies. Van de Puttelaar travaille également pour des magazines et des éditeurs, dont The New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker et Random House. En 2016, elle a créé The Rembrandt Series en collaboration avec le Rembrandt House Museum à Amsterdam. EN Carla van de Puttelaar (b. 1967, Zaandam, The Netherlands) graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam in 1996. She was awarded the Esther Kroon Prize in 1996, and in 2002 the Prix de Rome Basic Prize. She was nominated for the Prix Découverte des Rencontres d’Arles in 2006. Her work has gained worldwide recognition, she has exhibited in numerous museums and galleries around the world. Her photos have appeared in many publications including seven monographs. Van de Puttelaar also works for magazines and publishers including The New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker and Random House.

In 2016, she created The Rembrandt Series in collaboration with the R ­ embrandt House ­Museum, Amsterdam. In 2017, she started the (ongoing) acclaimed portrait series Artfully Dressed: Women in the Art World. She holds a Ph.D. in Art History from Utrecht University (2017) on Scottish Portraiture 1644-1714 with an emphasis on David and John Scougall.

Née en 1967, Carla van de Puttelaar est une photographe néerlandaise qui bénéficie d’une notoriété croissante sur la scène internationale.

Son nom est principalement associé à des photographies de nus féminins. Au cours des dernières décennies, elle a contribué de manière significative et extrêmement personnelle au développement de la photographie aux Pays-Bas et au-delà. Cependant, l'identifier uniquement aux photographies de nus ne rendrait pas justice à l’ensemble de son œuvre, d'autant plus que son travail s'est beaucoup diversifié au fil des dernières années.

Son cheminement artistique est fascinant au regard des similitudes et des différences qui traversent la panoplie de ses productions. En somme, les thèmes qui irriguent ses photographies sont des constantes qui se reflètent de manière plus ou moins prononcée au fil de sa création. Certains thèmes autrefois exploités de manière isolée refont surface en association avec d’autres sujets. Toutefois l'interaction de la lumière et de la peau reste au cœur de sa création, d’où le titre de l’exposition Brushed by Light. Ainsi, la peau peut être celle d'un corps féminin, mais elle peut aussi se confondre avec l'écorce d'un tronc d'arbre, une pétale de fleur, un tissu d'un vêtement ou un drapé. À travers plus de 70 photographies et 5 vidéos, l’accrochage au MNHA présente les différentes séries de l’artiste (Maîtres anciens, Rembrandt, Cranach, Sassoferrato, Lucid, Galatea, Ophelia, Hortus Nocturnum, Artfully Dressed: Women in the Art World), donnant ainsi un aperçu plus ou moins chronologique du travail de Carla van de Puttelaar et de son développement artistique tout au long de sa carrière.

Carla van de Puttelaar, born in 1967, is a Dutch photographer who has gained a growing international recognition.

Her name is mainly associated with photographs of female nudes. In recent decades, she has made a significant and extremely personal contribution to the development of photography in the Netherlands and beyond. However, identifying her art only with nude photographs would not do justice to her entire artistic work, especially since its considerable diversification in recent years.

Her artistic journey is fascinating in the matter of similarities and differences that cross the panoply of her productions. In short, the themes that can be traced her photographs are constantly present throughout her various series but always fluctuating in tonalities. Certain themes formerly exploited can resurface in association with other subjects. Nevertheless, the interaction of light and skin in her photographs remains at the heart of her work, hence the title of the exhibition Brushed by Light. Thus, the artist’s portrayal of the skin can be recognized easily in the female body, it can also be mirrored in different natural elements like in the bark of a tree trunk, a flower petal, or even in the fabric of a garment or a drapery.

Through more than 70 photographs and 5 videos, the MNHA’s exhibition presents different series of the artist (Old Masters, Rembrandt, Cranach, Sassoferrato, Lucid, Galatea, O ­ ­ phelia, Hortus Nocturnum, Artfully Dressed: Women in the Art ­World), thus giving a more or less chronological overview of the work of Carla van de Puttelaar and of her artistic development throughout her career.

Die 1967 geborene niederländische Fotografin Carla van de ­Puttelaar erfährt in der internationalen Szene zunehmend Anerkennung.

Ihr Name wird dabei vor allem mit weiblichen Aktfotografien in Verbindung ­gebracht. In den vergangenen Jahrzehnten hat sie mit ihrer Arbeit erheblich und auf äußerst persönliche Weise zur Entwicklung der Fotografie in den Niederlanden und darüber hinaus beigetragen. Eine ausschließliche Reduzierung auf Aktfotografien wird ihrem Werk insgesamt allerdings nicht gerecht, umso mehr, als ihr Schaffen sich gerade in den vergangenen Jahren sehr diversifiziert hat.

Ihre künstlerische Entwicklung ist angesichts der ihr ganzes Werk durchziehenden Ähnlichkeiten und Unterschiede faszinierend. Insgesamt bilden die Themen ihrer Fotografien Konstanten, die in ihrem Schaffen mehr oder weniger deutlich zutage treten. Manche früher einzeln behandelte Themen werden so im Zusammenhang mit anderen Sujets wieder aufgegriffen. Im Zentrum ihres Werkes steht allerdings nach wie vor die Wechselwirkung zwischen Licht und Haut, was auch den Titel der Ausstellung, Brushed by Light, erklärt. Dabei kann die Haut des weiblichen Körpers im Mittelpunkt stehen, jedoch auch die Rinde eines Baumstamms, die Oberfläche eines Blütenblattes, der Stoff eines Kleidungsstückes oder einer Drapierung.

Mit über als 70 Fotografien und 5 Videos werden in der Ausstellung des MNHA die verschiedenen Serien der Künstlerin vorgestellt (Alte Meister, Rembrandt, Cranach, Sassoferrato, Lucid, Galatea, Ophelia, Hortus Nocturnum, Artfully Dressed: Women in the Art World), so dass der Besucher einen mehr oder weniger chronologischen Überblick über das Schaffen Carla van de Puttelaars und ihre künstlerische Entwicklung während ihres gesamten Werdegangs erhält.

Cette série est une réflexion sur la collection de peintures de maîtres anciens du MNHA. Par exemple, la Pietà est inspirée de la magnifique peinture éponyme de Theodore van Loon, et la photographie de Maria Magdalena de deux tableaux du MNHA traitant du même sujet (Gillis Coignet, Abraham Janssens). La lumière naturelle dramatique et poétique présente dans de nombreuses peintures de maîtres anciens est une source d'inspiration importante dans les œuvres de Carla van de Puttelaar.

This series has been created as a reflection on the Old Master painting collection in the MNHA. For example, the Pietà has been inspired by the magnificent painting by Theodoor van Loon, and the Maria Magdalena photo by two paintings in the MNHA with the same topic (Gillis Coignet, Abraham Janssens). The dramatic and poetic natural light in many Old Master paintings is an important source of inspiration for the works by Carla van de Puttelaar.

Diese Reihe entstand aus der Auseinandersetzung mit der Gemäldesammlung alter Meister des MNHA. So wurde die Pietà z.B. von dem herrlichen Gemälde Theodoor van Loons inspiriert und die Maria Magdalena-Fotografie von zwei Gemälden des MNHA mit dem gleichen Sujet (Gillis Coignet, Abraham Janssens). Die Dramatik und die Poesie, die das natürliche Licht in vielen Gemälden alter Meister auszeichnen, bilden eine wichtige Inspirationsquelle für die Werke Carla van de Puttelaars.

En 2016, le Rembrandt House M ­ useum contacte Carla van de Puttelaar pour créer une nouvelle série photographique d’œuvres inspirées des nus de ­Rembrandt. Ses incroyables dessins et gravures témoignent non seulement d’une aptitude technique et d’une approche individualiste remarquables, mais aussi d’une maîtrise sublime de la lumière, des ombres et de la composition. Les nus de ­Rembrandt inspirent la photographe : dans ses nouvelles œuvres, elle ­parvient à capturer des instants magiques.

In 2016, the Rembrandt House M ­ useum approached Carla van de Puttelaar to create a new photographic series of works inspired by Rembrandt’s nudes. His incredible drawings and etchings show not only an amazing command of technique and individuality, but also a sublime mastery of light, shadow and composition. Rembrandt’s nudes inspired Carla to create new works in which she has been able to capture magical moments.

2016 wandte sich das Museum Het Rembrandthuis an Carla van de Puttelaar, um eine neue von den Akten Rembrandts inspirierte Fotografiereihe zu schaffen. ­Rembrandts einzigartige Zeichnungen und Kupferstiche zeugen nicht nur von einem verblüffenden technischen Können und einer sehr individuellen Persönlichkeit, sondern auch von einer meisterhaften Handhabung von Licht, Schatten und Komposition. Cranach Series

Dans cette série, les nus de Carla van de Puttelaar évoquent les Vénus de ­Cranach.

Elle utilise une variété de femmes pour exprimer une définition diverse de la beauté tout en gardant son style distinctif en utilisant le corps féminin gracieusement sur un fond noir dévorant. La Vénus de Cranach, qui a cinq cents ans, est une tentatrice captivante qui commande la scène, malgré sa ­silhouette fragile.

En revanche, les modèles de van de Puttelaar ne se tiennent pas debout, mais flottent immobiles et distantes dans les airs. Tout comme nous n'avons pas le courage de nous rapprocher de la Vénus la tentatrice de Cranach, nous n'osons pas déranger ces jeunes femmes, entièrement enveloppées dans leur beauté intérieure et extérieure.

Carla van de Puttelaar’s full-length nudes evoke Cranach’s Venuses. She uses a variety of ­women to express a diverse definition of beauty while keeping her distinctive style in using the female body graciously against a consuming black background. The five-hundred-year-old Cranach’s ­Venus is a captivating temptress commanding the stage, despite her fragile figure. In contrast, van de ­Puttelaar’s models do not stand, but rather they float motionless in mid-air with the impression of being far away. Just as we do not have the guts to come closer to Cranach’s Venus the T ­ emptress, we dare not disturb these young women, entirely wrapped up in their inner and outer beauty.

Carla van de Puttelaars ganzfigurige Akte erinnern an Cranachs Venus-Darstellungen. Sie arbeitet mit verschiedenen Frauen, um einen vielfältigen Schönheitsbegriff zum Ausdruck zu bringen; gleichzeitig bleibt sie ihrem besonderen Stil treu, indem sie den weiblichen Körper auf anmutige Weise vor einem tiefschwarzen Hintergrund zeigt. Cranachs fünfhundert Jahre alte Venus ist trotz ihrer zarten Gestalt eine fesselnde, die Szene beherrschende Verführerin. Van de Puttelaars Modelle hingegen stehen nicht, sondern schweben bewegungslos in der Luft, als seien sie weit weg. So wie wir uns nicht trauen, näher an Cranachs Venus, die Verführerin, heranzutreten, trauen wir uns auch nicht, diese ganz von ihrer inneren und äußeren Schönheit umhüllten jungen Frauen zu stören.

Cette série a directement suivi la série Cranach. En mettant les visages et les gestes des mains en gros plan, ils rappellent les tableaux consacrés à la Madone du peintre baroque italien Giovanni Battista Salvi da Sassoferrato.

This series has directly followed the Cranach series. Zooming in on the faces and the gestures of the hands, they recall the Madonna paintings by the Italian ­Baroque painter Giovanni Battista Salvi da Sassoferrato.

La série Tactile Light traite de la sensibilité du toucher. Elle comprend de nombreuses photos de mains dont la sensibilité tactile est rehaussée par la lumière naturelle.

The Tactile Light series deals with the sensitivity of touch. The series includes many photos of hands and their tactility is enhanced by the natural light.

In der Tactile Light-Reihe geht es um die Empfindlichkeit des Tastsinns. Die Serie enthält viele Fotos von Händen, deren Fühlbarkeit durch das natürliche Licht noch stärker zur Geltung kommt.

Lucid Series

Les modèles de la série Lucid semblent flotter entre le jour et la nuit dans un rêve lucide où la conscience et l'inconscience s’enchevêtrent activement, dans l'idée de pouvoir explorer un tout nouveau monde onirique alors qu’en même temps l’esprit et le corps s'éloignent dans un sommeil profond.

The models in Lucid series seem to be hovering between day and night in a lucid dream where consciousness and unconsciousness both play a role, the idea that you can explore a whole new dreamy world, while at the same time your mind and body are drifting away into deeper sleep.

Die Modelle der Lucid Series scheinen zwischen Tag und Nacht in einem luziden Traum zu schweben, in dem sowohl Bewusstes als auch Unbewusstes eine Rolle spielt, der Gedanke, dass man eine ganze, neue Traumwelt erkunden kann, während gleichzeitig Geist und Körper allmählich in einen tieferen Schlaf fallen.

The earliest photos in the career of Carla van de Puttelaar are officially ­untitled, although they already show the skin details, the monumentality and tender vulnerability that show the beauty and tenderness of the female skin and form and that characterize her later works such as the Galateas, and Tactile Light ­series.

Die frühesten Fotos aus Carla van de Puttelaars Laufbahn tragen offiziell keinen Titel. Lorsque le célèbre essayiste néerlandais Rudy Kousbroek a écrit une pièce ­lyrique pour la première monographie de l'artiste, il a comparé ses œuvres avec le mythe de Galatéa, qui a inspiré la création de cette série. Il a décrit le travail de van de Puttelaar comme la « transformation d'une statue en marbre blanc en un objet d'amour humain » de « vénération » et de « désir ». Il termine en ­déclarant: « Bref, un miracle s'est produit, le marbre a pris vie: c'est ce que démontrent ces photos. » When the celebrated Dutch essayist Rudy Kousbroek wrote a lyric piece for the first monograph of the artist, he compared her works with the myth of Galatea, which than resulted in the creation of this series. He went on to describe her work has a “transformation of a white marble statue into a human love object” of “veneration” and “desire”. He finishes by stating: “In short, a miracle has taken place, marble has come to life: that is what these photos show.”

Als der prominente niederländische Essayist Rudy Kousbroek einen lyrischen Text für die erste Monografie der Künstlerin schrieb, verglich er ihre Werke mit dem GalateaMythos, was schließlich zur Entstehung dieser Reihe führte. Er beschrieb ihre Arbeit als „Verwandlung einer weißen Marmorstatue in einen Gegenstand menschlicher Liebe“, „Verehrung“ und „Begierde“. Ophelia est un thème de prédilection en art depuis que Shakespeare a décrit sa mort de manière si impressionnante dans sa pièce Hamlet. Dans l'œuvre de ­Carla van de Puttelaar, Ophelia est l'héroïne qui dort ourlée de fleurs et de plantes qui l'entourent et continuent de croître en entrelaçant corps et âme.

Ophelia has been a favourite topic in Art since Shakespeare described her death so beautifully in his play Hamlet. In the work by Carla van de Puttelaar, Ophelia is the hero that is asleep while surrounded by flowers and plants that keep on growing, intertwining with body and soul.

Seitdem Shakespeare ihren Tod in seiner Tragödie Hamlet auf so beeindruckende Weise beschrieben hat, ist Ophelia in der Kunst ein sehr beliebtes Sujet. Im Werk Carla van de Puttelaars ist Ophelia die schlafende Heldin, die von Blumen und Pflanzen umgeben ist, die ständig wachsen und sich mit Leib und Seele verflechten.

Artfully Dressed: Women in the Art World

Au printemps 2017, Carla van de Puttelaar a créé une nouvelle série d'actualité consacrée aux femmes éminentes et brillantes du monde de l'art intitulée Artfully Dressed: Women in the Art World. Le concept de ce projet (initié avant le mouvement #MeToo) est de mettre en lumière les nombreuses femmes talentueuses dans ce domaine et mettre à l’affiche leurs réalisations, leur intelligence, leur pouvoir et leur beauté. À ce jour, cette importante série comprend un large éventail de femmes (plus de 450) qui se distinguent par leur culture, leur nationalité, leur âge et leur profession.

In the spring of 2017, Carla van de Puttelaar created a new and timely series devoted to prominent and promising women in the art world, Artfully Dressed: ­Women in the Art World. The concept of this project (begun prior to the #MeToo movement) is to shine a light on the many talented women in this field - to display their accomplishments, intelligence, power, and beauty. To date, this important series includes over 450 women from a wide range of cultural backgrounds, nationalities, ages, and professions.

Im Frühjahr 2017 begann Carla van de Puttelaar eine neue aktuelle ­Reihe über prominente und vielversprechende Frauen in der Kunstwelt, Artfully Dressed: Women in the Art World. Das Konzept dieses Projekts (das vor der #MeToo-Bewegung begann) besteht darin, die vielen talentvollen Frauen in diesem Bereich in den Mittelpunkt zu stellen − ihre Leistungen, Intelligenz, Stärke und Schönheit hervorzuheben. En 2012, Carla van de Puttelaar a commencé avec succès à examiner la peau et la texture des arbres et des fleurs, en particulier les fleurs fanées. Elle y a découvert la même sensibilité et sensualité fascinante dans ses modèles féminins. La lumière poétique qui englobe les pétales évoque la beauté vulnérable de ses nus.

Elle a également créé une grande frise de tulipes, inspirée des compositions similaires que l’on retrouve chez les maîtres anciens Johannes Bosschaert et ­Jacob Cuyp et à travers laquelle le spectateur peut advenir dans cet autre monde.

In 2012, Carla van de Puttelaar successfully begun to examine the skin and texture of trees and of flowers, particularly those flowers on the brink of fading. In them, she has discovered the same fascinating sensitivity and sensuality as in her female models. The poetic light that falls through and on the petals evokes the same vulnerable beauty as in her nudes. She also created a large tulip frieze, inspired by similar compositions by the old masters Johannes Bosschaert and ­Jacob Cuyp, through which the viewer can be emerged into this other world.

2012 begann Carla van de Puttelaar mit großem Erfolg, die Oberfläche und Struktur von Bäumen und Blumen zu untersuchen, und zwar vor allem von Blumen, die kurz davor sind, zu verwelken. Hier entdeckte sie die gleiche faszinierende Empfindlichkeit und Sinnlichkeit wie bei ihren weiblichen Modellen.
