EN The National Museum of History and Art dedicates for the first time in Luxembourg an exhibition to one of the main representatives of American abstract expressionism.

Hans Hofmann is one of the most important 20th century American modernist artists and art teachers. Born in 1880 in Weißenburg, Bavaria, Hofmann died in the United States in 1966. In his oeuvre, he combines the traditions of European modernist painting with influences from American postwar art, particularly abstract expressionism.

From 1904 until 1914, Hofmann lives in Paris, the capital of European art. There he discovers new and revolutionary artistic developments and befriends artists such as Picasso, Braque, Matisse, the Fauves and Robert and Sonia Delaunay.

Forced to leave Paris after the outbreak of the First World War, Hofmann opens an art school in Munich and becomes an advocate of European modern art. His school soon gains international recognition and attracts young artists from all over the world.

In 1930 and 1931, Hofmann is invited to lecture in the United States by some of his former American art students, who have become recognized artists themselves. Due

to the political developments in Germany, Hoffman decides to remain in America and to open a new school of art in New York.

Through promoting European modern painting theory, Hofmann becomes one of the most influential teachers for a generation of American artists to become the New York School abstract expressionist movement.

Jackson Pollock, Lee Krasner and Helen Frankenthaler are among the artists who were largely influenced by Hans Hofmann’s theories and works.

In his works, Hofmann pursues and develops the idea of the autonomous painting.

His oeuvre explores both the self-validity of pictorial means and the autonomy of intellectual creating. Through his perception and experience of nature, Hofmann creates an independent body of works that is free of the need to depict or reproduce a motive.

Although more than a generation older, Hofmann’s paintings are often ahead of those of his students. The influential art historian Clement Greenberg mentions that he saw Hofmann using the dripping-technique already in 1943, four years before Jackson Pollock started using the technique that made him world-famous.

A chronological hanging of more than 40 works allows us to understand the development of Hofmann’s art towards abstraction.

DE Das Nationalmuseum für Geschichte und Kunst zeigt zum ersten Mal in Luxemburg eine Ausstellung eines Hauptrepräsentanten des amerikanischen Abstrakten Expressionismus.

Hans Hofmann ist einer der wichtigsten Künstler und Kunstlehrer der amerikanischen Moderne des 20. Jahrhunderts.

Als der erste Weltkrieg ausbricht muss Hofmann Paris verlassen und gründet kurz darauf seine erste Kunstschule in München. Dort wird er zum Vermittler der europäischen Moderne. Seine Schule erlangt bald internationale Aufmerksamkeit und zieht junge Künstler aus aller Welt an.

Auf Einladung ehemaliger amerikanischer Schüler, die mittlerweile im Kunstbetrieb ihres Heimatlandes arriviert sind, reist Hofmann 1930 und 1931 zu Gastvorträgen in die USA und entschließt sich aufgrund der politischen Entwicklungen in Deutschland zur Gründung einer neuen Kunstschule in New York.

Mit seiner Vermittlung moderner Malereitheorie europäischer Prägung wird Hans Hofmann zu einem der einflussreichsten Lehrer einer neuen Künstlergeneration in den USA, die den Abstrakten Expressionismus der New York School prägen wird.

Künstler wie Jackson Pollock, Lee Krasner oder Helen Frankenthaler werden durch die Lehre und Werke Hofmanns entscheidend beeinflusst.

In seinem eigenen Werk verfolgt und entwickelt er den Gedanken des autonomen

immer noch zu den weniger bekannten Avantgardisten der Moderne. Diese Ausstellung möchte dazu beitragen, dies zu ändern. Über 40 chronologisch geordnete Werke ermöglichen es, die Entwicklung seiner Malerei hin zur Abstraktion zu verstehen.

Bildes. Sein Werk thematisiert sowohl die Eigengültigkeit der bildnerischen Mittel als auch die Autonomie der geistigen Schöpfung. Der Künstler schafft durch die Anschauung der Natur und seiner daraus entstehenden eigenen Wahrnehmungen und Erfahrungen ein gänzlich eigenständiges Werk, das unabhängig von äußeren Aufgaben der Abbildung oder Wiedergabe eines Motivs ist.

Obwohl Hans Hofmann gut eine Generation älter ist als seine Schüler, ist seine Malerei der seiner Schüler oft voraus. So erzählt der einflussreiche Kunsthistoriker Clement Greenberg, er habe die Dripping-Technik schon 1943 bei Hofmann gesehen. Erst vier Jahre später begann Jackson Pollock mit seinen Drip-Paintings, mit denen er weltberühmt wurde.

De 1904 à 1914 Hofmann vit à Paris, capitale européenne des arts, où il se familiarise avec les nouvelles évolutions de la peinture. Il se lie d’amitié avec Picasso, Braque, Matisse, les Fauves ainsi qu’avec Robert et Sonia Delaunay.

Lorsque la Première Guerre mondiale éclate, il doit quitter la France pour l’Allemagne, où il ne tarde pas à créer sa première école d’art à Munich. Il s’érige alors en vecteur de la modernité européenne.

Son établissement acquiert bientôt une notoriété internationale en attirant des jeunes artistes du monde entier. À l’invitation d’anciens étudiants américains qui ont fait leur chemin sur la scène artistique de leur pays, Hofmann se rend aux

professeurs les plus influents de la génération d’artistes montants des États-Unis, qui vont marquer de leur empreinte l’expressionnisme abstrait de la New York School.

Des peintres comme Jackson Pollock, Lee Krasner ou Helen Frankenthaler ont été influencés de façon décisive par l’enseignement et l’œuvre de Hans Hofmann.

Dans ses propres tableaux, il poursuit et développe l’idée d’une œuvre autonome. Son œuvre atteste à la fois l’irréductible singularité des moyens picturaux et l’autonomie de l’acte créateur. À travers l’observation de la nature et les prises de conscience et expériences individuelles qui en découlent, l’artiste élabore une œuvre totalement autonome, affranchie de toute obligation de description ou de reproduction d’un motif.

Même si toute une génération sépare Hans Hofmann de ses élèves, il n’empêche que sa peinture est souvent en avance sur la leur. C’est ainsi que l’éminent critique d’art Clement Greenberg rapporte avoir observé la technique dite du «dripping» (gouttes de peinture) chez Hofmann dès 1943. Seulement quatre ans plus tard, Pollock réalisera ses premières peintures («drip-paintings») qui vont le rendre mondialement célèbre.

États-Unis en 1930 et 1931 pour y donner des cours et des conférences. Les événements politiques en Allemagne le conduisent alors à s’établir outre-Atlantique et à fonder une nouvelle école d’art à New York.

En dépit de son rôle déterminant dans l’évolution de l’art du XXe siècle outreAtlantique, où d’importantes expositions lui furent consacrées déjà de son vivant, Hofmann compte toujours en Europe parmi les précurseurs moins connus de l’art moderne.

Cette exposition veut contribuer à y remédier.
