Le réduit du Fort Thüngen est unique au Luxembourg, un vestige emblématique de l’histoire du pays.

Aujourd’hui, ce bâtiment d’exception abrite le Musée Dräi Eechelen.

Le musée propose un plan de visite original dont la trame narrative illustre l’histoire de la forteresse du Luxembourg et son importance dans la formation du territoire et de l’identité du pays.

The redoubt of Fort Thüngen is an emblematic reminder of the country’s history and, as such, one-of-akind in Luxembourg. Nowadays, the exceptional building houses the Musée Dräi Eechelen which tells the story of the Luxembourg fortress and its importance in propelling the territory to evolve into a state throughout the centuries, from the end of the Middle Ages to the threshold of modernity.

COLLECTION PERMANENTE

PERMANENT EXHIBITION

Partez à l’assaut de l’histoire de la forteresse en visitant les collections permanentes du Musée. Chaque casemate illustre un siècle du passé de la forteresse, notamment à travers ses liens avec l’histoire du Luxembourg. L’aventure commence au Moyen Âge avec la prise de la ville par les Bourguignons en 1443 et s’achève par la construction du Pont Adolphe en 1903.

Delve into the past of the fortress with a visit to the museum’s permanent exhibition. Each casemate plunges you into a different century and paves the path of the stronghold along the lines of Luxembourg’s history. The adventure sets off with the city’s capture by the Burgundians in 1443 and closes with the construction of the Adolph Bridge in 1903.

Né à Luxembourg-Grund, d’origine humble, je suis entré au service de l’armée impériale au beau milieu de la Guerre de Trente Ans. En tant que commandant de la forteresse et gouverneur du duché de Luxembourg espagnol, j’ai défendu Thionville en 1639 et en 1643. Mais nous avons perdu cette belle place, cédée à la France.

En tant que Prince de Chimay, j’ai été fait chevalier de la Toison d’Or par le roi d’Espagne, insigne que je porte avec fierté. Mais les incessants combats contre les Français ne m’ont guère facilité la tâche. Je ne veux pas vous tracasser avec ces histoires anciennes – regardez plutôt comment ils ont amoché ma belle inscription lors du siège de 1684 !

I was born of humble origins in Luxembourg-Grund. I enrolled in the Imperial army in the middle of the raging Thirty Years War. As commander of the fortress and governor of the Spanish duchy of Luxembourg, I also defended Thionville in 1639 and 1643. It’s a pity we lost this marvellous spot to the French nevertheless!

As Prince of Chimay, the King of Spain even dubbed me knight of the exclusively Distinguished Order of the Golden Fleece.

Although it was a leap of faith for my lifelong quarrel with the French, carrying the collar wouldn’t facilitate the task. Don’t even get me started on them – look at the mess they made of my lovely inscription!

Avec mon mari François et mon fils aîné et successeur Joseph, je suis ici chez moi dans ce fort autrichien. En montant sur le trône en 1740, j’étais bien trop prise par les affaires d’État pour venir visiter mon lointain Duché.

Mes ingénieurs se sont amusés à renforcer la forteresse et à creuser les casemates dans le rocher du Gibraltar du Nord.

Le 10ème régiment de lanciers m’a détaché au cœur de cette forteresse fédérale remplie de Prussiens dans un pays gouverné par le Roi des Pays-Bas – et ceci au beau milieu de la Révolution belge de 1830 ! Rien d’étonnant que cette difficile cohabitation ait suscité des tensions et des duels.

With my husband Francis to my right and my successor and eldest son Joseph to my left, this Austrian keep is all ours. I have never been to remote Luxembourg, though.

Ruling has consumed all of my time since 1740. My outstanding engineers took great delight in reinforcing the fortress and in digging casemates into the rocks of the Gibraltar of the North.

The 10th Lancers has deployed me in the middle of a fortress packed with Prussians in a country governed by our very Dutch King while the Belgian Revolution of 1830 is just around the corner!

This unusual coexistence, unsurprisingly, has given rise to friction that at times can only be settled with a duel.

Regardez ce beau traité ! Je l’ai signé moi-même à Londres le 11 mai 1867 pour le Grand-Duché de Luxembourg. Après de longues discussions, nous avons enfin obtenu le statut de la neutralité, garanti par les Grandes Puissances !

Suite au démantèlement de la forteresse, la ville s’est transformée en un véritable chantier, un peu comme de nos jours !

Si vous croyez que je me la suis coulée douce avec mes copains durant la retraite, vous vous trompez ! J’ai enfin pu rassembler mes notes et esquisses et m’atteler à mon projet de vie : réaliser une maquette de la forteresse en plâtre. Celle-ci sera même coulée en bronze en 1903. Quelle tristesse que je n’aie pas pu l’admirer de mon vivant !

After tedious negotiations, we have finally gained neutrality with the support of the Great Powers!

However, dismantling the fortress has turned the city into a giant construction site – it reminds me of nowadays!

If you thought I’d take it easy in retirement, you were wrong!

Finally, I put my notes and sketches together and started my most exciting project: a plaster model of the fortress. Much to my delight, it caught the government’s attention and will be cast in bronze in 1903. It is a bit sad however, that I won’t live to see it.
