Class 1: Oil/Acrylic/Mixed Media CRITERIA STATEMENT
My intent is to select great works that reflect the world as the artist sees it. The artworks may span numerous variation of mediums and technique from super realism to abstract etc. They must possess an array of emotions and storytelling. I looked for quality, sincerity and a unique understanding of the medium. BIOGRAPHY
Ta-coumba T. Aiken, 2017 Minnesota State Fair Poster Ar tist, is a public fine artist and public arts activist. The Walker Ar t Center’s recent acquisition of “NO WORD” is presently on display as is “Shadows at the Crossroads” in the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden. He creates ar t to help communities find their Visual Voice through collaborative community engagement and creative discovery. He has served on many boards and select panels and is a former trustee at the Minneapolis College of Ar t and Design. Aiken is a recipient of the POLLACK-KRASNER fellowship, BUSH VISUAL ARTS fellowship and the Knight Ar ts Challenge Grant in collaboration with The Walker West Music Academy in Saint Paul. His ar tworks are in numerous collections such as a The McKnight Foundation, Augsburg University’s (Hagfors Center for Science, Business, and Religion), BUSH Foundation, Minneapolis Central Library and Spritmuseum’s “ABSOLUT VODKA COLLECTION” in Stockholm, Sweden. Public art projects include Minneapolis Central Library, as well as the winning Lite-Brite Guinness World Record murals located in the Saint Paul Union Depot, Shadow Spirits on the Nicollet Mall and so many more. Aiken says, “I create my ar t to heal people and their communities by evoking a positive spirit.”
NICHOLAS LEGEROS Class 2: Sculpture CRITERIA STATEMENT
For decades I have been entering the Minnesota State Fair Fine Ar ts Exhibition. This is my first time as a juror. I have often been rejected from this show. As someone who makes a living as a sculptor, rejection is something that happens regularly, but it still stings a little. This is why I rarely jury shows. I certainly don’t want to discourage anyone from pursuing sculpture as an ar t form. I also remember the thrill of being selected for a show and how that success was so encouraging. I am 66 years old and have been making my living as a sculptor for over 40 years. My experience only makes me a good judge of my own work. With that disclaimer in place, this was my process: I carefully studied each entry five times before star ting the process of rating each work from 1-9. I was tasked with examining 154 entries and instructed to get that number down to 19. I looked for originality, excellence in execution, and how well the ar tist expressed their idea. You cannot jury a show with personal bias, and I have always favored work that is beautiful, sculptures that have a sense of joy or humor, and those images that are thought-provoking. To those who made it into this show: congratulations. To those who didn’t: (many who were friends), please forgive me and do not be discouraged. BIOGRAPHY
Nicholas Legeros has a Masters of Fine Arts degree from the University of Minnesota. For over twenty years he was an ar tist-in-residence and instructor at the Minnetonka Center for the Ar ts. He also taught for Metropolitan State University, Breck Schools and the Edina Ar t Center. Nineteen years ago, Legeros left teaching to pursue a full-time career as a sculptor. His recent large commissions include a statues that honor Edina Hockey Coach Willard Ikola at Braemar Arena, Donald Nyrop and the women and men of Northwest Airline at Centennial Lakes Park in Edina, Minn., Goldy Gopher for Coffman Union, Sid Hartman for the Target Center, and a 17’ high statue of St. Joseph for St. Joseph’s Hospital in St. Paul, Minn. Legeros served on the board of the Northeast Minneapolis Ar ts Association (NEMAA) for seven years (three as President) and five years on the board of the Nor theast Community Development Corporation. “Nick Legeros – Sculpting A Life” by author Karin Winegar was recently published by Edina Community Foundation.
ANNE LANDREMAN Class 3: Watercolor/Gouache/Casein/Tempera CRITERIA STATEMENT
My goal was to select the strongest works among a wide range of approaches, subject matter and use of materials. The initial criteria in this process included good craftsmanship, strong design, confident handling of medium and creativity. In the second look at the strongest ar tworks, I focused on emotional impact, personal viewpoint and successful exploration of a theme. In other words, did I find something that evoked an emotional response, conveyed energy, posed a question, told a story, took risks, or presented something new for the viewer to explore. BIOGRAPHY
Anne Landreman has worked in different media for over for ty years, from drawing and printmaking to painting, using watercolor, gouache, and acrylic. Based in Minneapolis, she has also taught art on several levels, including as an ar tistin-residence at many Twin Cities area schools, where she created large-scale murals and installations. She also worked as an art specialist for 18 years at Diamond Path School of International Studies in Apple Valley, Minn., as an instructor at the Bloomington Ar t Center, and as an adjunct professor at Mankato State University and Augsburg University. Anne has exhibited work in solo, two-person and juried group shows at galleries including the Phipps Center for the Arts, Lakewood Community College, First Universalist Church in Minneapolis, Minneapolis College of Ar t and Design, Artistry at the Bloomington Art Center ; and Normandale Lake Office Park. Her work has been shown numerous times at the Minnesota State Fair. Her paintings are part of collections locally, nationally and internationally. Anne received an art degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a Master’s degree from Hamline University. She has done additional coursework at the Minneapolis College of Ar t and Design, and at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor.
STEFANIE KIIHN Class 4: Drawings/Pastel CRITERIA STATEMENT
When selecting the drawings and pastels for this exhibit, I looked for art that: • Conveyed a sense of timelessness and/or spoke to the current moment
• Captured my imagination with story or mood or mystery • Balanced expression of an idea with technical skill. Narrowing down the pool to the 29 images selected left out many deserving works of ar t. Some of my final decisions were based on ensuring that the chosen works of art propor tionately represented the subject matter (landscape, por trait, abstract, etc) submitted. BIOGRAPHY
I am a Roseville-based artist who works in pen and ink. The principal theme in my ar t is the history of a place. My work investigates neighborhoods to match historic maps and images to current streets and buildings. I research the people and architecture of the past to locate the ghost-like footprints that are left. What did the city look like before freeways and railroads? Where are the lost neighborhoods and lost ways of life? I grew up in Saint Paul, Minnesota and studied ar t at the University of Minnesota. I exhibit locally and regionally, with art in the permanent collection of Securian Financial and the Ramsey County Historical Society. I am honored to serve as a juror for the Minnesota State Fair fine arts competition this year. I have submitted work to the competition for nearly three decades, experiencing both the disappointment of rejection and the excitement of acceptance. Each year, the competition proves an amazing showcase of amateur and professional artists representing the diversity and talent of Minnesota artists.
KURT SEABERG Class 5: Prints CRITERIA STATEMENT
This year’s print submissions were incredibly strong, which made it difficult for me to narrow them down to just 13 works for the exhibition. I chose the pieces that I did for their mastery of technique and for the ways they moved me. Some were beautiful, some were haunting, all were professional. I also wanted to showcase the many types of printmaking - lithography, intaglio, wood cut, lino cut, screen print, mono print, photogravure, etc.- and the incredible variety of styles and possibilities that each of these types can offer. BIOGRAPHY
After studying art at the University of Washington and earning my Bachelor of Arts degree, I continued my studies
at the University of Minnesota, where I learned intaglio and lithography. I have been a working member of Highpoint Center for Printmaking since 2003. Although I’ve worked in a variety of media, I soon chose to express much of my creative energy through lithography. I love the way the texture of the stone preserves the liveliness and spontaneity of the drawing, as well as the numerous possibilities this medium offers to fur ther transform and manipulate the drawn image. As a printed form, lithography makes my ar t and my vision more available to others. One of the tasks of the ar tist, I feel, is to address the issues of the day. Art can be a powerful tool to enlighten, to disturb, to shift our perspective. In any case, I believe it should move us in some way, whether to act or simply to remind us of where our strength and power lies--in beauty, community and a sense of place. Despite what is being done to it, nature--both ecological and human nature--is incredibly resilient and ever evolving. In the end, what gives me hope is also what drives my art: humility, gratitude and a sense of wonder as I contemplate the mystery of being alive in a living world. If I can evoke the same feelings in others, I believe I will have been successful.
KIMBERLEE JOY ROTH Class 6: Ceramics/Glass CRITERIA STATEMENT
It was a privilege to serve as your juror and to view the exceptional ar twork submitted by very talented fellow Minnesotans. My jurying criteria included the following: exceptional craftsmanship, work that uses form, color and materials to create engaging and expressive elements throughout the piece, and those that show both a mastery of the materials and a mastery of the creative process. Every work submitted had a least one of the following: mastery of craft, cleverness in expressing narrative or creativity in material use. It was those who had all three that rose to the top of my list. BIOGRAPHY
Kimberlee Joy Roth graduated from the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities with an MFA in Ceramics and an Ar t History minor in 2007. It’s Plastic, her fall 2012 solo exhibition at The Catherine G. Murphy Gallery at St. Catherine University in St. Paul, Minnesota raised both awareness to plastic pollution in the world’s oceans and, $1,143 for The Algalita Marine Research Institute in Long Beach, California.
She is a 2013 McKnight Artist Fellow in Ceramics and a Fiscal Year 2016 and 2011 recipient of an Ar tist Initiative Grant from the Minnesota State Ar ts Board. Her work is in the permanent collection of the Frederick R. Weisman Ar t Museum; Norman and Evangeline Hagfors Center for Science, Business, and Religion, Augsburg University; Mayo Clinic Rochester (Minnesota); 71 France Apartments, Edina, Minn.; and the Lincoln Arts and Culture Foundation in Lincoln, Calif. She maintains a studio in the Northeast Arts District of Minneapolis. From 2007 to 2019, she was the Technician for the Ar t and Art History Department and The Catherine G. Murphy Gallery at St. Catherine University, St. Paul, Minn. She is currently the Ceramics Technician at the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities and is co-president of Minnesota Women Ceramic Artists.
SUSAN HENSEL Class 7: Textiles/Fiber CRITERIA STATEMENT
Here are the criteria I applied to the fiber art category: • Is this piece entered in the correct category? Is it fine ar t or applied art? • Does the artist demonstrate deep knowledge of their medium? • Does the artist demonstrate a clear concept? • Does the artist push the medium into new territory? • Does the artist demonstrate good composition, good use of color? • Does something here compel or surprise me? • Which pieces make me come back to look, over and over again? Which pieces can I not forget? BIOGRAPHY
Susan Hensel received her BFA from University of Michigan in 1972. She has a history, to date, of well over 200 exhibitions, 35 of them solo, twenty + garnering awards. In the coming two years, Susan has two-person and group exhibitions scheduled with the Howard County Art Council, Ellicot, MD, Artistry, Bloomington, Minn. and the Garrett Museum of Art, Garrett, Ind. Hensel’s artwork is collected nationwide, represented in collecting libraries and museums as disparate as the Museum of Modern Art in New York and The Getty Research Institute with major holdings at Minnesota Center for Book Ar ts, Baylor University and University of Washington.
Her new innovative work that blends commercial embroidery processes with sculptural concerns is gaining attention and awards mainly in the US with inroads into Europe. Hensel’s knowledge of materials makes it possible for her to create small to large scale hard edge sculpture from soft fabrics that paradoxically keep their crisp form with minimal armatures. Hensel has curated over eighty exhibitions of emerging and mid-career ar tists from all over the United States and Canada. Hensel’s curatorial work ranges from 2000 to the present. CARLA RODRIGUEZ Class 8: Photography CRITERIA STATEMENT
There were several genres/themes that seemed very prevalent in the pool of submitted images in the photography category, and I did my best to select the best of those common themes. Beyond that, I was drawn to work that requires or inspires the viewer to spend more time with it, whether because of its content, the process it was made with, or just its visual presence. BIOGRAPHY
Carla Alexandra Rodriguez is a visual artist living and working in Saint Paul, Minn. A first-generation Venezlan-American from immigrant parents, she grew up in Houston, Texas, and then moved to the Twin Cities to study photography at the Minneapolis College of Ar t and Design. She received her BFA there in 2011. Rodriguez works with mainly large format cameras, and both film and wetplate processes depending on the content of the project. In addition to her studio art practice, she runs a small por trait business called Blkk Hand that specializes in wetplate/tintype portraits.

This special exhibition provides a window into the practicing artists’ studio to see the labor of art-making in action. Great art objects rarely tumble out as perfect, crystalline masterpieces, but rather are the result of hours of intense activity, reworking, deliberation, and research. We’ve invited the 12 participating artists to use their time in our gallery as a 12-hour working studio day. In addition, they have all set aside time during this working day to actively interact with our viewers: This may be talking about the piece they are working on specifically, speaking about their past work or practices, or simply fielding questions. Each artist’s day is self-contained. As media and practices vary from artist to artist, expect each day to be unique.

ARDEN HARRISON-BUSHNELL I love creating fiber art and taking bold chances, albeit with delicate care. As a self-taught artist I developed an original technique through years of practice. Welcoming challenge has helped me in life and art. The discipline, patience, and determination it takes to find solutions is an integral part of bringing my imagination to fruition. Every detail, every bead, every thread matters. My appreciation of small things inspires the perseverance to work tirelessly until my art “takes on a life all its own” and once ‘hope’ has been depicted in the overall theme. Although a fiber artist, I consider myself to be a fiber-art ‘painter’ because my vision is what I wish to paint…sewing needles, my ‘paintbrushes’; the fabrics & threads, my ‘paint’. Each piece takes months to complete. My passion for color, maneuvering beautiful fabrics, embroidery, and bead-work is driven by the intrinsic beauty of nature and the world’s various, vibrant cultures. Living in Grand Marais, working as a full time potter, Mike Smieja operates Grand Marais Pottery, electric fired pottery designed for everyday use and wood fired pottery with more of an rustic flair. Using some local materials, clay and glazes made from scratch, Mike designs his pots to build a relationship with the end user keeping a pleasing aesthetic in mind.
April Malphurs uses the additions of pattered flame-worked beads to transform blown glass vessels into lushly patterned sculptural objects. April’s glass art is whimsical, capturing a zest for life and a playfulness inspired by teaching children. With bold color and pattern, she aims to help others find the same joy she feels when creating. She states, “In my life and work, one can reflect the difficulties we face letting it determine our path, or like light refracting through glass, we can change the direction and give back something beautiful.”
I work in my studio, remaining close to nature. I hope that the healing nature of the North Shore of Lake Superior can not only be seen, but also felt in my pots. I want the relationship between the piece and the user to be a balanced experience between the pot, the user and the maker. People should feel pleasant and pleased while using my pottery. JOSHUA BINDEWALD I typically utilize an inclusive color palette along with myriad techniques and materials to create works, mostly on paper. While concrete thoughts and ideas inform my work, my primary motivation is to create something aesthetically pleasing, an object of beauty. Pretty pictures permit a moment of escape and for that reason remain a valid artistic pursuit. My work responds to the fallibility and promise of humankind. Together with memories and their associated feelings, allusions and editorializations are made to the splendor of the natural world, contemporary land use, and society. The direct, physical manner I use to create delicate works coincides with our treatment of the planet and its inhabitants. The action and fullness of the compositions reflects my unsettled outlook. Although the work is often thematically heavy, my approach is playful and intuitive. This embedded contradiction reinforces the conflicting ideas that inform my practice. The sensory impact of the work is as important as the meaning. As human beings in the twenty-first century, we are confronted with many ugly distractions; my ultimate goal as an artist is to create some appealing ones. I adore dogs, and animals and usually prefer them to people. I love (and hate) playing golf and following football. When the weather gets warm, I simply cannot be outside enough. Much of that time is spent tending to my garden beds.
April lives and flameworks in Southern Minnesota and blows glass at Vandalia Glassworks. She earned her B.S. at Cornell University and M.A. at Teacher’s College Columbia University. Her studies included courses in drawing, painting, and sculpture before studying glass. April attended 5 week-long intensives at The Studio Corning Museum of Glass. She received 5 artist grants from the McKnight Foundation and Prairie Lake Regional Arts Council and a Minnesota State Arts Board Creative Support Grant. April’s work will be featured in the International Glass Fashion Show 2023. She has shown work in numerous exhibits and her installation, “Splash!”, received 1st prize at the 2nd Midwest Open at Woman Made Gallery, Chicago.
BLAIR TREUER I’m a storyteller who paints with fabric and draws with thread. As the only white person in my Native American family my work is about my reflections as an outsider and the emotional rollercoaster I often ride as I stand fixed on the outside but privileged enough to look in. It’s not simply about the pieces of Ojibwe culture I’ve been allowed to see, but instead what it’s allowed me to see within myself, and even to recognize what cannot be found there. I’m not afraid to explore new approaches to fabric or afraid to engage in challenging topics. My portraits explore intimate parts of my life centering on the juxtaposition between my white culture and my husband’s traditional indigenous culture, and have ranged in topics from drug abuse, social ostracization, body image, femininity and masculinity, sexual abuse and aging; with spirituality deeply woven into their narratives. My images are often confused with paintings until experienced in person and people stand as close as possible to examine them because their familiarity with fabric has them wondering how I did that. My work is vulnerable and personal. Even when my work is dark, it’s filled with hope.
NICCU TAFARRODI
ANDY STURDEVANT
Niccu Tafarrodi is a visual artist, educator, researcher, and author based in Plymouth, Minn.. Over the past 30 years, Tafarrodi has created over 40 dioramas that depict her memories of Persia. Tafarrodi grew up in Shiraz, Iran and immigrated to Minneapolis in 1986 during the Islamic Revolution. She holds a Ph.D. in health education and has practiced miniature art and creating dioramas since she came to the United States.
Andy Sturdevant is an artist and writer in Minneapolis. He is also the proprietor of Birchwood Palace Industries, LLC, a micro-press based in his attic near East Lake Street that is devoted to publishing and distributing small-scale artist projects that range in subject matter from defunct video store logos to the social implications of how your front porch is set up. Birchwood Palace publications are available online, as well as in bookstores and speciality shops in the United States and Europe. Birchwood Palace Industries is founded on the principle that weird, interesting little books should be affordable, easy to find, look good, reflect a wide range of experiences and artistic approaches, directly support artists, and (the vast majority of the time) pay for themselves.
Tafarrodi’s dioramas have been shown throughout Minnesota, including exhibitions at the Banfill-Locke Center for the Arts, Intermedia Arts, Carson Building, Holiday Inn in Chicago, American Swedish Institute, Minnesota Guild Association, the Katherine E. Nash Gallery, State Farms, and Regis Center for Art. She has given public lectures on her art practice at various institutions and organizations about “art and health”. KRISTINE HEYKANTS Kristine Heykants uses photography and video to unearth the humanity that connects us all. Through narrative and conceptual storytelling, she makes sense of our shared experience while searching for beauty in the familiar and mundane. Gender roles, importance of place, and experience of the present within the context of the past are recurring themes in her projects. She is interested in psychologist Carl Jung’s concept of archetypes – symbols and behaviors that have existed throughout time – as a way to describe roles played by humans throughout history. Most recently, she completed work on Uprooted, a longterm photo documentary about her father’s rural Iowa hometown. She also led high school students from Minneapolis FAIR school in a photography workshop about sense of place and identity. The resulting student photos are displayed as large-scale banners on the outside of their school, located at Hennepin Avenue and 10th St. Kristine holds a Master’s degree in Journalism and Mass Communications from the University of Iowa, and a BFA in Art and Design from Iowa State University. A longtime resident of Minneapolis, she has received grants from the Jerome Foundation, McKnight Foundation and the Minnesota State Arts Board. She exhibits widely and teaches photography and video at Minneapolis College
SCOTT KROHN I love working in colored pencil and scratchboard for their potential to render realistic images. I have always been stylistically interested in realism, which enables me to strive to capture the beauty of the natural world. Growing up in Minnesota, my favorite subject to work with is rocks from the shores of Lake Superior. Here is where my soul finds peace. For me, drawing rocks is a chance to share that beauty and peace with others. I am fascinated by the variety of shapes, colors, and textures in each rock. Beyond appreciating and capturing their natural beauty, I often try to communicate something meaningful about the human experience through the use of metaphor. It is my hope that my viewer can not only appreciate the realistic image for its beauty, but also relate to it on a deeper, metaphorical level. In addition to working with my typical subject matter, I also enjoy subjects such as soda cans, lego bricks, or coins. I try to push my technical skills and experiment with various techniques and surfaces. My greatest hope is that my viewers appreciate the natural beauty in my work and connect with it in a meaningful way.
CHRISTOPHER HARRISON
KORDULA COLEMAN
Christopher E. Harrison (1965) is an Ohio native who developed a strong drive to createat young age through his fascination with entertainment and current events. His concepts are inspired by historical flashpoints from the past and present that chronicle the Black experience the U.S. and globally. He received his BFA in 1987 Retail Advertising from the Columbus College of Art and Design, Ohio. Harrison had a successful 15+ year career as in designer in the publishing and advertising industries as he continued to develop his fine art skills through exhibits and commissions, eventually leaving it to pursue his practice full time in 2016. He applied to the Academy of Art University in 2009 for his MFA in Studio Arts, took a hiatus and returned in 2020 to complete his degree in Painting which he will complete in 2021.
My name is Kordula Coleman and I am a figurative ceramic sculptor living and working in Northeast Minneapolis.
Harrison currently resides and works in Minneapolis, Minn. He has exhibited his work in solo and group exhibitions including MIAD, Wisc., Nemeth Art Center, Minn., Soo Visual Art Center, Minn., Ridgewater College, Minn., and Smack Mellon, N. Y. Harrison has created public art for sites around Minneapolis as well. His work has been supported with grant funding by Jerome Foundation, Minnesota State Arts Board, the City of Minneapolis, the Elizabeth Murray Foundation, The Andy Warhol Foundation and MRAC Next Step.
ALYSSA BAGUSS Alyssa Baguss’s practice explores mediated natural environments through drawing processes and interactive creative experiences. She is a 2015, 2017 and 2019 recipient of the Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Initiative Grant, the 2017/18 Jerome Foundation Fellowship for Emerging Artists and a part of the Minnesota Artist Exhibition Program at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts in 2019. Her work has been exhibited at the Rochester Art Center, Minnesota Center for the Book Arts, Minnesota Museum of American Art, Minneapolis Institute of Arts and currently as a part of the 2021 Forecast Public Art Mid-career Artist Professional Development Grant. In addition to exhibiting artwork in traditional settings, Alyssa has a long history of creating and facilitating interactive creative experiences at events, art festivals, communities and educational institutions for all ages in the state of Minnesota. The Minnesota Artists Penny Press Project is her most recent experimental happening serving up local artwork to the public one penny at a time
Through my art, I am exploring the experience of being human. Sculpting the human body is my way of expression and I am fascinated with its anatomy and its poses. I grew up with an emotional abusive parent, so my pieces often explore how a dark state of mind can be overcome. I am looking for healing in my art making - for myself and for the viewer. I believe that humans do best in an atmosphere of compassion where they can show their complete selves without fear of judgment. By being open about my own scars, I want to encourage viewers to open up about theirs as well. My piece ‘Take Care’ expresses my recently found ability to stand up for my mental well being, ans my departure from being a victim. It is visually inspired by the fighting poses of Marvel heroines. I love working with clay because it is supple, versatile and forgiving, which reminds me of the human body. The feeling of clay under my hands also has a calming and uplifting effect on me.
