Letter from the President On behalf of the Board, hundreds of generous donors and dedicated volunteers, I am pleased to share the outstanding progress made in 2013 by the Minnesota Dental Foundation toward its vision of eliminating unmet oral health needs in Minnesota.

With immense pride and gratitude, I want to thank each in-kind and cash donor and every volunteer. We could not begin to reach our vision without your support.

I hope you will find this report both informative and motivating. Its primary purpose is to demonstrate that donations made to the Foundation are used wisely, efficiently and effectively to help those who have difficulty accessing dental care in Minnesota.

Equally important, I want to encourage you to join our large and growing volunteer network for programs such as Donated Dental Services (DDS) and Minnesota Mission of Mercy (MnMOM). If you retired recently, check out the new Retired Dentist Program on our website. It’s designed to help you maintain your license in return for service to the underserved – a great way to give back to your profession.

With the exception of Donated Dental Services whose fiscal year does not correspond to the calendar year, the audited financials presented in this report are from calendar years 2013 and 2012.

Whether through the dues check-off, annual fund drive, a donation in memory/honor of someone, or the funding of major projects like Mission of Mercy, your financial contributions are critical to the future of the Foundation. I want to expressly recognize colleagues who have included the Foundation in their estate plans as part of the Legacy Circle. You are true visionaries.

Each first-time contribution, annual donation and estate plan gift strengthens the Foundation’s assets and its ability to support deserving programs throughout the state. Every gift counts and every gift is needed to help us sustain our profession’s leadership in giving. I am confident that 2014 will be even more productive and we will have even more success.

Vision To eliminate unmet oral health needs in Minnesota.

Mission • To initiate and support outreach programs that provide dental services to underserved populations and communities •To encourage and support volunteerism within the profession •To promote careers in dentistry, especially in underserved areas

Leadership in Action From its inception in 2000 through 2005, the Foundation’s main focus was to fund community and volunteer clinics in the Give Kids A Smile program. Starting in 2006, grant applications were accepted from the greater community interested in dental care for the underserved.

From its first grant of $100 in 2002 through December 31, 2013, the Foundation has funded 315 different projects undertaken by more than 70 organizations with in-kind or cash services totaling $853,829.

Donated Dental Services (DDS) A program of Dental Lifeline Network, Donated Dental Services (DDS) provides dental care to disabled, elderly or medically fragile individuals in the private offices of participating dentists. All specialty dentistry and laboratory work are also provided at no cost. Since its inception in Minnesota in 2003, 1,385 patients have received dental services valued at $6,498,485.

In the program’s 2012-2013 fiscal year, 219 patients received dental services valued at $987,416. State funding of the program ended in 2011. In addition to grants from Boston Scientific and Dental Lifeline Network, Delta Dental of Minnesota Foundation has generously funded the program in FY2012-2013.

Minnesota Mission of Mercy (MnMOM) Minnesota’s second Mission of Mercy (MnMOM) was held at The Sanford Center in Bemidji in June 2013.

Staffed by more than 1,300 dental professionals and other volunteers, the two-day clinic provided free dental care to children and adults who have difficulty accessing care. More than 1,650 patients received $958,912 in donated dental services, including fillings, extractions, root canals, anterior partials, pediatric dentistry, hygiene and oral health education. Delta Dental of Minnesota Foundation was the event’s Signature Sponsor.

Martha Mordini Rukavina LoanForgivenessProgram The Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation Board provides up to two dentists with funds to help repay qualified dental education loans. Dentists must be new to the practice of dentistry in the Taconite Assistance Area (TAA) of northeastern Minnesota. One dentist in Hibbing and one dentist inVirginia received grants in 2013.

Retired Dentist Program Launched in 2013 and funded by Delta Dental of Minnesota Foundation, this pilot program gives retired dentists an opportunity to give back to the profession and their community.

In exchange for licensing fees, professional liability insurance and continuing education expenses, the dentist provides a minimum of 100 hours per year or approximately one day per month of free care to the underserved.
