FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Colleagues and Supporters, Once again, on behalf of the Board of Directors of the Minnesota Dental Foundation, hundreds of generous donors and numerous dedicated volunteers, it is my pleasure to share the outstanding progress made in 2019 by the Minnesota Dental Foundation toward its vision of eliminating unmet oral health needs in Minnesota. I truly thank every donor of in-kind products and services or cash donations. I also want to thank every volunteer since we cannot begin to reach our vision without your support. As in past years, I hope you will find this report both informative and motivating. Its primary purpose is to demonstrate that donations made to the Foundation are used wisely, efficiently, and effectively to help those who have difficulty accessing dental care in Minnesota. We received our second estate gift in 2019 and are aware of one more in 2020. If you do not belong to our Legacy Circle, please do not hesitate to contact us for more information. The Minnesota Dental Foundation held its fifth OneSmile Gala at the Nicollet Island Pavilion in Minneapolis on September 27, 2019. It was a resounding success with 300 attendees. Thank you to all who attended and/or donated to the event. The Foundation also held its seventh successful Wall of Wine fundraising event at the Star of the North meeting. There were over 350 individuals, businesses, and foundations that contributed to the Foundation in 2019. If you were not one of them, we would love to add your name to the list in 2020! Each contribution, annual donation and estate plan gift strengthens the Foundation and its ability to support deserving programs throughout the state. VISION STATEMENT The vision of the Minnesota Dental Foundation is to eliminate unmet oral health needs in Minnesota.
MISSION STATEMENT The mission of the Minnesota Dental Foundation is to: • initiate and support outreach programs that provide dental services to underserved populations and communities • encourage and support volunteerism within the profession • promote careers in dentistry, especially in underserved areas
LEADERSHIP IN ACTION From 2002 to 2004, the Foundation’s main focus was to fund community and volunteer clinics in the Give Kids a Smile program. Starting in 2005, grant applications were accepted from the greater community interested in providing dental care to the underserved in Minnesota. In 2011, two internal programs were initiated, the Minnesota Mission of Mercy and the Martha Mordini Rukavina Loan Forgiveness Program. The Donated Dental Services program was moved from the Minnesota Dental Association to the Foundation in 2012. The Retired Dentist program started in 2013. In the fall of 2014, in collaboration with the Delta Dental of Minnesota Foundation, the Dedicated to Minnesota Dentists Loan Repayment for Service program began. In 2015, the Give Kids a Smile program was moved from the Minnesota Dental Association to the Foundation and the Minnesota’s Heroes Orthodontic program, in collaboration with Smiles Change Lives, was launched. And, in 2019, the Minnesota Dental Foundation collaborated with the Minnesota Dental Association, the Metropolitan Area Agency on Aging, and the Oral Health Services for Older Adults Program at the University of Minnesota to help develop a program and inform the dental practices in Minnesota of the best practices for dealing with individuals afflicted by all forms of dementia as well as their caregivers. From its first grant of $100 in 2002 through December 31, 2019, the Foundation has funded 601 different projects with in-kind or cash services totaling $2,899,291, plus another $2,000,000 in collaboration with the Delta Dental of Minnesota Foundation, and $7,500 in collaboration with DentaQuest for a total of $4,906,791 to help thousands of Minnesota’s most vulnerable individuals access millions of dollars in dental care.

CURRENT PROGRAMS FOUR CONSECUTIVE YEARS OF OVER $1 MILLION IN FREE DENTAL CARE IN THE DDS PROGRAM New program supporting the Metropolitan Area Agency on Aging and the Oral Health Services for Older Adults Program at the University of Minnesota to inform dental offices in Minnesota of the best practices for dealing with individuals afflicted by all forms of dementia as well as their caregivers
DONATED DENTAL SERVICES (DDS) Donated Dental Services, a program of Dental Lifeline Network (DLN), has been in existence in Minnesota since 2003 and became a program of the Foundation in 2012. The program provides comprehensive dentistry to disabled, elderly, or medically fragile individuals who cannot afford to pay for needed dental services. Veterans are also eligible for these services. The dentistry is provided for free in the private offices of the 436 participating dentists. All specialty dentistry and laboratory work is also provided at no cost. Delta Dental of Minnesota Foundation has generously funded the program for the 2018–2019 fiscal year. In the program’s 2018–2019 fiscal year ending June 30, 2019, 272 patients received dental services valued at $1,009,860. This was the fourth consecutive year that dental services exceeded $1,000,000 in each year. Since its inception in Minnesota, 2,262 patients have received dental services valued at $12,435,684.
GIVE KIDS A SMILE PROGRAM (GKAS) Give Kids a Smile is a national program that provides free dentistry to children during the first weekend of February. February is National Children’s Dental Health Month. This has been a program of the Minnesota Dental Association since 2003 and became a program of the Minnesota Dental Foundation in 2015. In the program’s February 2019 event, approximately 1,992 children received $1.1 million in free dentistry by 1,185 volunteers. Since its inception in Minnesota, over 78,400 children have received $23.2 million in free care by almost 33,000 volunteers. Financial support for this program was provided by HealthPartners, 3M Oral Care, the Minnesota Dental Association, and the Minnesota Dental Foundation.

MARTHA MORDINI RUKAVINA LOAN FORGIVENESS PROGRAM The Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation Board (IRRRB) provides funds for dentists to help repay qualified dental education loans if they practice for at least five years in the Taconite Assistance Area (TAA) of northeastern Minnesota. Currently, each dentist accepted into the program can receive up to $120,000. The program began in 2009 and was moved to the Foundation in 2011. Four dentists have completed their obligations and four dentists are currently in the program. One grant is currently available.
MINNESOTA’S HEROES ORTHODONTIC PROGRAM This program was started in the fall of 2015 to provide free orthodontic care to children 8–18 and spouses of Gold Star Families, those families who have lost a family member in service to our country since 9/11. This program is in collaboration with Smiles Change Lives, a Kansas City-based nonprofit that helps provide orthodontic care to children of low-income families. The first two teen-aged children enrolled in the program completed their treatment in 2018 and two children started the program in 2019.
MINNESOTA MISSION OF MERCY (MnMOM) This program provides free fillings, extractions, root canals, partial dentures, children’s dentistry, and hygiene and oral health education in a large temporary clinic set up in a city in Minnesota. Since its inception in Minnesota, 6,536 compassionate volunteers have provided $6,016,859 in free dentistry in 9,497 patient visits over the course of six mission events – Mankato in 2012, Bemidji in 2013, Mankato again in 2014, Duluth in 2015, Moorhead in 2016, and Minneapolis in 2018. No event was held in 2019 and the next scheduled event is July 2021.

RETIRED DENTISTS PROGRAM This program, funded by the Delta Dental of Minnesota Foundation and DentaQuest, began in 2013 as a way for dentists who are no longer receiving an income from dentistry to “give back� to the profession and their community by providing free dental care for persons who have difficulty accessing dental care. In return for reimbursement of fees for licenses, professional liability insurance, and continuing education expenses, the dentist must provide at least 100 hours per year or approximately one day per month of free care to the underserved. In 2019, nine dentists provided an estimated $308,000 worth of free dentistry in 568 hours of volunteer dentistry at The Rochester Salvation Army Good Samaritan Dental Clinic in Rochester; HealthFinders in Faribault; Hope Dental Clinic in St. Paul; Northern Dental Access in Bemidji; Ready Set Smile in Minneapolis; and Sharing and Caring Hands in Minneapolis. The cost of this program in 2019 was $1,969. Each dollar of expenses provided $156 in free dental services.

DEDICATED TO MINNESOTA DENTISTS (DMD) LOAN REPAYMENT FOR SERVICE PROGRAM This program, in collaboration with Delta Dental of Minnesota Foundation, was announced in September 2014 as an educational loan repayment for service program to attract new dentists to rural dental Health Professions Shortage Areas (HPSA) in Minnesota. Each successful recipient can receive up to $200,000 to repay qualified educational loans. All funds have been distributed. Since the inception of the program, a total of $2,000,000 has been awarded to ten new dentists who are practicing in Bigfork, Cook, Deerwood, Ely, International Falls, Montevideo, Mora, Tyler, Walker, and Warroad.
DEMENTIA FRIENDLY DENTAL PRACTICES The Minnesota Dental Foundation and the Minnesota Dental Association are supporting the Metropolitan Area Agency on Aging and the Oral Health Services for Older Adults Program at the University of Minnesota to help develop a program and inform the dental offices in Minnesota of the best practices for dealing with individuals afflicted by all forms of dementia as well as their caregivers. Funding to develop this program was raised by grants written by the Metropolitan Area Agency on Aging and the Oral Health Services for Older Adults Program.
