Letter from the President Dear Colleagues and Supporters, As I write this in the spring of 2025, it seems like our world is changing every day. Thankfully, the Minnesota Dental Foundation has and will continue to be steadfast in its support of the underserved in Minnesota who have a difficult time accessing dental care.

Even though 2024’s expenses exceeded its income, income from the 2023 year, exceeded expenses by about the same amount. Significant 2024 MnMOM income was received in late 2023. All of the scheduled projects and events for 2024 took place, and support of the Foundation continues to grow. This was especially true for the ADA/MDA/component dues statement, which had a major change due to the implementation of new software in 2024. Thus, there was a significant increase in those who made their donation to the MDF with the checkoff box on that statement. As has been mentioned in the past, not every project is done every year, so there can be significant fluctuations in income and expenses. This has become the new “normal” of this organization. There have been only four times since 2001 when expenses have exceeded income, but in the year before or after, income exceeded expenses.

As in past years, I hope you will find this report both informative and motivating.

Its primary purpose is to demonstrate to you that donations made to the Foundation are used wisely, efficiently, and effectively to help those who have difficulty accessing dental care in Minnesota.

We are always in need of volunteers for our internal projects, or you can provide your unique talents at a non-profit clinic in your community.

Leadership in Action • From 2002 to 2004, the Foundation’s primary focus was to fund community and volunteer clinics in the Give Kids a Smile (GKAS) program.

• Starting in 2005, we accepted grant applications from the greater non-profit community that were interested in dental care for the underserved in Minnesota.

• In 2011 two internal programs were initiated, the Minnesota Mission of Mercy and the Martha Mordini Rukavina Loan Forgiveness Program.

• The Donated Dental Services program was moved from the Minnesota Dental Association to the Foundation in 2012.

• The Retired Dentist program started in 2013.

• In the fall of 2014, in collaboration with the Delta Dental of Minnesota Foundation, the Dedicated to Minnesota Dentists Loan Repayment for Service program was initiated.

• In 2015, the Give Kids a Smile program was moved from the Minnesota Dental Association to the Foundation, and Minnesota’s Heroes Orthodontic program, in collaboration with Smiles Change Lives and the Minnesota Association of Orthodontists, was launched.

• In 2020, the Disaster Relief Program was activated to help dental offices in the Twin Cities that were damaged by riots after the death of George Floyd.

We completed our eighth successful OneSmile Gala in September at the Nicollet Island Pavilion where the Minnesota Mission of Mercy Program was highlighted. The 10th Wall of Wine fundraising project was held at the Star of the North meeting. Both of these events helped generate additional dollars for the Foundation as well exposure to the public.

In May, a number of vendors in the dental world of Minnesota put on a golf tournament at Braemar Golf Course in Edina with all of the proceeds going to the Minnesota Dental Foundation. It was a very successful event and plans are to make it an annual event.

From its first grant of $100 in 2002 through December 31, 2024, the Foundation has funded 789 different projects with in-kind or cash services totaling $4,676,688 plus another $2,000,000 in collaboration with the Delta Dental of Minnesota Foundation and $7,500 in collaboration with DentaQuest for a total of $6,684,188 to help thousands of Minnesota’s most vulnerable individuals access millions of dollars in dental care.

Current Foundation Programs Donated Dental Services (DDS) Donated Dental Services, a program of Dental Lifeline Network (DLN), has existed in Minnesota since 2003. This program provides comprehensive dentistry to disabled, elderly, or medically fragile individuals who cannot afford to pay for needed dental services. The dentistry is provided for free in the private offices of the 381 participating dentists and 71 dental labs that were participating at the end of the year. All specialty dentistry and laboratory work is also provided at no cost. Delta Dental of Minnesota Foundation has generously funded the program for the 2023-2024 fiscal year.

In the program’s 2023-2024 fiscal year ending June 30, 2024, 168 patients received dental services valued at $1,054,290. Since its inception in Minnesota in 2003, 2,758 patients have received dental services valued at $17,252,845.

Give Kids a Smile Program (GKAS) Give Kids a Smile is a national program that provides free dentistry to children during the first weekend of February. February is National Children’s Dental Health Month. This has been a program of the Minnesota Dental Association since 2003.

In the program’s February 2024 event, approximately 2,501 children received $1,166,254 in free dentistry by 745 volunteers. Since its inception in Minnesota, 86,515 children have received $27.5 million in free care by 37,194 volunteers. Financial support for this program was provided by Solventum (3M Oral Care), the Minnesota Dental Association, the Minnesota Dental Foundation and individual donors. COVID-19 continues to impact this program

Martha Mordini Rukavina Loan Forgiveness Program The Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation Board (IRRRB) provided funds for dentists to help repay qualified dental education loans if they practice for at least five years in the Taconite Assistance Area (TAA) of northeastern Minnesota. Currently, each dentist accepted into the program can receive up to $120,000. The program began in 2009 and was moved to the Foundation in 2011. Six dentists have completed their obligations and four dentists are currently in the program. Of the six who have completed their obligations, one had to retire because of medical issues and the other five are still practicing in the TAA!

Minnesota’s Heroes Orthodontic Program This program was started in the fall of 2015 to provide free orthodontic care to children 8-18 and spouses of Gold Star Families, those families who have lost a family member in service to our country since 9/11. This program is in collaboration with Smiles Change Lives, a Kansas City-based non-profit that helps provide orthodontic care to children of low-income families, and the Minnesota Association of Orthodontists. Five children have completed the program.

Minnesota Mission of Mercy (MnMOM) This program provides free exams, fillings, extractions, root canals, partial dentures, children’s dentistry, hygiene, and oral health education in a large temporary clinic set up in a city in Minnesota.

Since its inception in Minnesota, 7,665 compassionate volunteers have provided 57,322 dental procedures valued at $7,940,208 in 11,331 patient encounters over eight mission events. The locations were Mankato in 2012, Bemidji in 2013, Mankato again in 2014, Duluth in 2015, Moorhead in 2016, Minneapolis in 2018, St. Cloud in 2022 and Duluth again in 2024. The Delta Dental of Minnesota Foundation has generously been the Signature Sponsor for all of these events.

Have now provided almost $6.7 MILLION in support of dental care for the underserved in Minnesota since the first grant of $100 in 2002.

Retired Dentists Program This program, funded by the Delta Dental of Minnesota Foundation and DentaQuest, began in 2013 as a way for dentists who are no longer receiving an income from dentistry to “give back” to the profession and their community by providing free dental care for persons who have difficulty accessing dental care. In return for reimbursement of fees for licenses, professional liability insurance, and continuing education expenses, the dentist must provide at least 100 hours per year or approximately one day per month of free care to the underserved.

In 2024, nine dentists provided an estimated $400,146 worth of free dentistry in 889 hours of volunteer dentistry. The cost of this program in 2024 was $452. Since its inception, a total of 22 volunteer dentists have volunteered 5,991 hours providing free dentistry valued at $3.72 million.

Dedicated to Minnesota Dentists (DMD) Loan Repayment for Service Program This program, in collaboration with Delta Dental of Minnesota Foundation, was announced in September 2014 as an educational loan repayment for service program to attract new dentists to rural dental Health Professions Shortage Areas (HPSAs) in Minnesota. Each successful recipient received up to $200,000 to repay qualified educational loans. All funds have been distributed.

Since the inception of the program, ten new dentists are practicing in Bigfork, Cook, Deerwood, Ely, International Falls, Montevideo, Mora, Tyler, Walker and Warroad.

Reuse of Dental Equipment and Supplies Dental offices that are remodeling, moving or closing and have equipment and/or supplies that can be donated to non-profit dental clinics around the state can contact the Minnesota Dental Foundation. The Foundation then notifies the dozens of non-profits around the state of the location and availability of equipment and supplies and the non-profit contacts the dental office and arranges for pick-up. Thousands of dollars of equipment and supplies avoid the garbage and landfills and saves precious expenses for the non-profit.
