FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Colleagues and Supporters, On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Minnesota Dental Foundation it is again my pleasure to share the outstanding progress made in 2017 by the Minnesota Dental Foundation toward its vision of eliminating unmet oral health needs in Minnesota. I truly thank each and every donor of in-kind products and services or cash and every volunteer. This report’s primary purpose is to demonstrate that donations made to the Foundation are used wisely, efficiently and effectively to help those who have difficulty accessing dental care in Minnesota. I hope it will encourage you to join our large and growing volunteer network for programs such as Donated Dental Services (DDS), Give Kids a Smile (GKAS) and Minnesota Mission of Mercy (MnMOM). And, if you are recently retired, there is a program to help you maintain your license in return for service to the underserved. Whether through the dues check-off, annual fund drive, a donation in memory/honor of someone or the funding of major projects, your financial contributions are critical to the future of the Foundation. I want to extend special gratitude to colleagues who have included the Foundation in their estate plans as part of the Legacy Circle. We had the third OneSmile Gala at International Market Square in October. It was a resounding success with 300 attendees. We did our first Fund-A-Need and in just a few minutes, the generous attendees donated $35,000 to help Minnesota’s underserved access dental care. Overall, over $68,000 was raised during the evening. In addition, our fifth successful Wall of Wine fundraising event at Star of the North raised almost $3,000. Please consider signing up for AmazonSmile and designating the Minnesota Dental Foundation as your charity of choice. If you do, a percentage of your purchases will be donated to the MDF. Each contribution strengthens the Foundation and its ability to support deserving programs throughout the state. VISION STATEMENT The vision of the Minnesota Dental Foundation is to eliminate unmet oral health needs in Minnesota.
MISSION STATEMENT The mission of the Minnesota Dental Foundation is to: • initiate and support outreach programs that provide dental services to underserved populations and communities • encourage and support volunteerism within the profession • promote careers in dentistry, especially in underserved areas
LEADERSHIP IN ACTION From 2002 to 2004, the Foundation’s main focus was to fund community and volunteer clinics in the Give Kids a Smile program. Starting in 2005, grant applications were accepted from the greater community interested in providing dental care to the underserved in Minnesota. In 2011, two internal programs were initiated, the Minnesota Mission of Mercy and the Martha Mordini Rukavina Loan Forgiveness Program. The Donated Dental Services program was moved from the Minnesota Dental Association to the Foundation in 2012. The Retired Dentist Program started in 2013. In the fall of 2014, in collaboration with the Delta Dental of Minnesota Foundation, the Dedicated to Minnesota Dentists Loan Repayment for Service Program began. In 2015, the Give Kids a Smile program was moved from the Minnesota Dental Association to the Foundation and the Minnesota’s Heroes Orthodontic Program, in collaboration with Smiles Change Lives, was launched. Since its inception through December 31, 2017, the Foundation has funded 506 different projects with in-kind or cash services totaling $2,235,468 plus another $1,600,000 in collaboration with the Delta Dental of Minnesota Foundation for a total of $3,835,468 to help thousands of Minnesota’s most vulnerable individuals access millions of dollars in dental care.

DONATED DENTAL SERVICES (DDS) Donated Dental Services, a program of Dental Lifeline Network (DLN), has been in existence in Minnesota since 2003 and became a program of the Foundation in 2012. The program provides comprehensive dentistry to disabled, elderly or medically fragile individuals who cannot afford to pay for dental services. These services are provided for free in the private offices of the 436 participating dentists. All specialty dentistry and laboratory work are also provided at no cost. Delta Dental of Minnesota Foundation has generously funded the program for the 2016–2017 fiscal year. In the program’s 2016–2017 fiscal year ending June 30, 2017, 200 patients received dental services valued at $1,001,708. This was the second consecutive year that dental services exceeded $1 million in a year. Since its inception in Minnesota, 1,983 patients have received dental services valued at $10.3 million.
GIVE KIDS A SMILE PROGRAM (GKAS) Give Kids a Smile is a national program that provides free dentistry to children during the first weekend of February. This has been a program of the Minnesota Dental Association since 2003 and became a program of the Minnesota Dental Foundation at the end of 2015. In the program’s February 2017 event, approximately 2,335 children received $1.039 million in free dentistry by 1,174 volunteers. Since its inception in Minnesota, 74,000 children have received $20.9 million in free care by 30,118 volunteers. Financial support for this program was provided by HealthPartners, 3M Oral Care, Minnesota Dental Association and the Minnesota Dental Foundation.

MARTHA MORDINI RUKAVINA LOAN FORGIVENESS PROGRAM The Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation Board (IRRRB) provided funds for two dentists to help repay qualified dental education loans if they practice for at least five years in the Taconite Assistance Area (TAA) of northeastern Minnesota. Each dentist can receive up to $120,000. The program began in 2009 and was moved to the Foundation in 2011. Before the program was transferred to the Foundation, three dentists completed their obligations and are still in practice in the TAA. Two dentists are currently in the program, one is in Gilbert and one is in Hibbing.
MINNESOTA’S HEROES ORTHODONTIC PROGRAM This program was started in the fall of 2015 to provide free orthodontic care to children 8–18 and spouses of Gold Star Families, those families who have lost a family member who served in the armed services since 9/11. This program is in collaboration with Smiles Change Lives, a Kansas City-based non-profit that helps provide orthodontic care to low-income families. Two teen-aged children are enrolled in the program. The orthodontists provide the treatment at no cost to the patients.
MINNESOTA MISSION OF MERCY (MnMOM) There was no Minnesota Mission of Mercy project in 2017. Plans are for one to be held at the Minneapolis Convention Center on September 7–8, 2018. Since its inception in Minnesota, 5,339 compassionate volunteers have provided $5,105,100 in free dentistry in 8,035 patient visits in five mission events – Mankato in 2012, Bemidji in 2013, Mankato again in 2014, Duluth in 2015 and Moorhead in 2016.

RETIRED DENTISTS PROGRAM This program, funded by the Delta Dental of Minnesota Foundation, began in 2013 as a way for dentists who are no longer receiving an income from dentistry to “give back” to the profession and their community by providing free dental care for persons who have difficulty accessing dental care. In return for reimbursement of fees for licenses, professional liability insurance and continuing education expenses, the dentist must provide at least 100 hours per year or approximately one day per month of free care to the underserved. In 2017, the six dentists provided an estimated $508,460 worth of free dentistry in 708 hours of volunteer dentistry at the Children’s Dental Health Services in Rochester, HealthFinders in Faribault, Ready Set Smile, Metro State University and Sharing and Caring Hands in Minneapolis, and Rice Regional Hospital in Willmar. The cost for this program in 2017 was $3,325. Each dollar of expenses provided $153 in free dental services.
DEDICATED TO MINNESOTA DENTISTS (DMD) LOAN REPAYMENT FOR SERVICE PROGRAM This program, in collaboration with Delta Dental of Minnesota Foundation, was announced in September 2014 as another educational loan repayment program to attract new dentists to rural dental Health Professions Shortage Areas (HPSA) in Minnesota. Each successful recipient can receive up to $200,000 to repay qualified educational loans. In 2017, $400,000 was committed to new dentists in Cook and Walker. Since the inception of the program, a total of $1,600,000 has been awarded to eight new dentists who are practicing in Benson, Cook, Deerwood, Ely, International Falls, Mora, Walker and Warroad.
