Living On The St. Paul Campus Andy Byun The University of Minnesota’s St. Paul campus is a smaller — but just as friendly — place for students, faculty, staff and neighbors of the residential communities. It is not only home to the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resources Sciences, but a few other departments including the College of Continuing and Professional Studies as well. At first glance, St. Paul looks like a scenic picnic spot right out of a picture book. Do you think you’re taking full advantage of what St. Paul has to offer? There’s a lot more to it than meets the eye. Here’s your to-do list:

Your Ultimate One-Stop Shop: St. Paul Student Center: Everyone knows of Coffman Union on the East Bank campus, but do you know about the St. Paul Student Center? There’s a massive food court alongside a convenience store, and while its cafeteria offers a great dine-in experience, there is also extra space for studying or hanging out with friends.

You can also head downstairs to the Gopher Spot for some food, bowling, and billiards.

Whether you need help with your U Card or you just lost something, visit the Information Desk.

Don’t let the name fool you, the Information Desk at the St. Paul Student Center is not solely a place for you to ask questions, the Information Desk operates as a satellite station location for the U Card Office. Also, the information desk is a United States Postal Service station where you can buy stamps, and mail letters and packages. If that’s not enough, you can also find your missing items in the lost and found, or get discounted tickets to theaters and other local events.

Gophers Women’s Soccer: There is a good chance that you can catch the Gophers Women’s soccer team playing at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium! Going into the 2018 Big Ten Tournament as the No. 7 seed, the Gophers beat the No. 2 seed Rutgers, the No. 6 seed Nebraska and the No. 1 seed Pennsylvania State to claim the Big Ten Tournament Championship title. After a successful 2018 season, the Gophers are back in action at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium on Saturday, Aug. 17 and will face North Dakota State University.

Women’s soccer is one of many sports that the University of Minnesota students can watch for free with a U Card. That’s right, the game is free. The stadium is located just beyond the main campus, and there is a shuttle bus service that brings fans to and from the stadium. Conveniently, the circulator stops right at the St. Paul Student Center. If parking is a concern, get there early because you can park for free in the parking lot right next to the stadium until it fills up. Various giveaways and events happen at games as well.

As usual, if you are paying the Student Services Fees, then you are automatically a member of the University Recreation and Wellness centers. Bring your U Card and enjoy your workout.

Other Useful Resources: If you are not feeling well, go to the Boynton Health clinic located in Coffey Hall. Free flu shorts are available at the clinic throughout the fall semester. Make sure to register beforehand and keep an eye out for upcoming announcements from the flu clinic.

Bell Museum: The Bell Museum is another great St. Paul highlight for you to visit. The museum has five permanent exhibits including the Diversity Wall, which highlights the biodiversity of Minnesota, the Pleistocene Minnesota exhibit, along with its famous mammoth, as well as the Touch & See Lab. Did we already say it’s free with a valid U Card? However, there is an extra fee if you want to see the planetarium in addition to the gallery.

St. Paul campus is home to the University’s Magrath, Natural Resources and Plant Pathology libraries. If you need to rent a book and you don’t want to go all the way to Minneapolis, visit the University Library website and request to have the book delivered to Magrath Library for pick-up. As always, you can find some cozy and quiet study spaces at these libraries.

Bikers take note: there are bike racks all over the St. Paul campus and at the museum as well.

There are many other things that you can discover on your own either on campus or in the communities around campus. Have fun exploring the neighborhood!

St. Paul Gym: You don’t need to worry about making it to the East Bank Recreation and Wellness Center because you have the St. Paul Gym! At this facility, you can find almost everything from a general fitness area to an eight-lane swimming pool, and a 24-foot climbing wall. If you feel like exercising outdoors, you can use the outdoor track,

Jason Lum So you’ve finally moved into your new apartment and left the dorms behind. You’re probably excited about having your own bathroom, living room, and kitchen. However, there’s one amenity that apartments can’t offer compared to the dorms — food. Now, you’re faced with the task of cooking all your own food instead of just swiping into a dining hall and taking your pick of what you want that day. You’ll soon figure out how much time, energy, and money groceries take out of your daily routine.

The easiest way to face this new burden is to buy all your food in bulk. Whether it’s meat, rice or vegetables, buy it all in bulk. Instead of buying 2 pounds of rice, get 10 pounds and share it with friends to split the cost. You can even buy perishable food in bulk and throw whatever you don’t finish by the “best by” date into the freezer. I promise it’ll last a couple of months longer (depending on the food — milk is a no-go). After a couple of weeks, you’ll see how much money you save by buying everything in bulk, and not to mention all the time saved going to and from the grocery store.

So you have just bought all your groceries in bulk, but what now? Well, the most efficient and convenient way to use it is to meal prep. Meal prep is exactly like it sounds, which is preparing enough meals for anything from a couple of days up to a week, all in one go. Now all you have to do is purchase reusable containers and put them in the fridge or freezer until you're ready to eat the food. Just pop each meal in the microwave whenever you get hungry, saving you lots of time that would have been spent preparing each meal on its own. This is especially helpful for those long days where you have absolutely zero motivation to cook anything. So instead of eating a giant bag of chips for dinner, you have a hassle-free meal ready within minutes.

1. Chicken, Broccoli and Rice: Chicken, broccoli and rice is the perfect choice for anyone trying to make a cheap healthy meal.

Now, you’re probably thinking that because this is a cheap and healthy meal, it tastes bland and boring. However, by using different sauces and seasonings, you’ll find that this won’t be a problem.

Feel free to add in your favorite flavors to make it your own or mix it up and try new ones to keep things from getting boring.

chicken breast(s) (1/2 a breast per meal) rice of your choosing (1/3 cup uncooked per meal) bag of pre-chopped broccoli heads (1/2 cup per meal) sauce/marinade/oil of your choosing seasoning of your choosing

Prep: • Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit • Cover both sides of chicken with sauce/marinade/oil of your choosing, place on a tray (if using a marinade or sauce, doing this step the night before is preferable) • Spread the broccoli out onto a tray and season with salt and pepper. If have olive oil, feel free to mix some in now as it makes the broccoli significantly tastier Cooking: • Cook rice in a rice cooker using 1½ cups of water for every 1 cup of rice (If you don’t have a rice cooker you can place the rice and water into a pot and boil for 18-20 minutes) • Place chicken into the oven and cook for 20-25 minutes (until chicken reaches 165 degrees Fahrenheit) • Place broccoli into the oven and cook for 20-23 minutes

2. Burrito Bowl: Everyone loves going to places like Chipotle and Qdoba every once in a while, but going there all the time can be expensive and when you’re on a budget, just not an option. So instead of having to pay upwards of $8 for a bowl, try making your own:

rice of your choosing (1/3 cup uncooked per meal) ground beef (1/3 lb per meal) shredded cheese canned beans of your choosing (1/2 cup per meal) one cup of salsa (1/4 cup per meal) taco meat seasoning

Prep: • Mix ground beef in a bowl with taco meat seasoning Cooking: • Cook ground beef in a pan on medium/high until brown • Place canned beans into a pot and heat up on medium until hot • Cook rice in a rice cooker using 1½ cups of water for every 1 cup of rice (if you don’t have a rice cooker you can place the rice and water into a pot and boil for 18 - 20 minutes) • Place rice, meat, beans into a bowl, and top it off with as much salsa and cheese as you want

It’s that time of the year — move-in. Soon, you will move to your new place, meet new roommates and friends, and embark on the journey that is the renter’s life. Leaving the comfort of home can be overwhelming.

Here are the bare necessities for every student living solo:

What is the most universally comfortable place in a home? It is the most obvious, but crucial aspect of any living space: your bed. Before buying bedding, pick-up a futon or mattress, and then purchase addons. Otherwise, how will you set up your new favorite place on the first night of move-in? There are numerous ways to amplify your sheet decor on a budget — tie-dye sheets party, anyone? Lots of pillows, quilts and the like are also necessary for a comfy and cozy environment. After your bedspread is perfect, what more do you need?

Actually ... many items, but that’s what this article is for.

When you have a closet in your living space, there is no excuse to leave your clothes in your bag or on the floor — I’m sorry, someone had to say it. The best way to protect jackets and pants from wrinkling is by hanging them up after drying. Clothes can sometimes reveal a lot about a person’s style, identity and personality, so keep it clean. Tip: buy stronger hangers to hold heavier clothes, like your parka. By the way, a drying rack is not only a great way to save on utilities, but also protects your clothes from the harmful dryer and potential shrinkage. But to each their own, it would be humorous to see everyone wearing their shrunken clothes.

After smashing your toe against the corner of your bed frame, consider investing in a decent lamp or an assortment of string lights. Besides, it’s better for your concentration to study in brighter environments. Salt lamps are a great alternative to artificial light sources and surprisingly taste pretty good (disclaimer: do not lick your lamp). If you’re looking for decor ideas, hang strings of fairy lights across your room, and intertwine them with actual string and photos. After a busy day, come home and relax in your comfortable bed with the light of your choosing.

Clean room, happy heart:

Author’s must-have: A hairdryer and humidifier are my favorite items in my apartment. Having a hairdryer not only saves time when getting ready, but also can be used as a DIY heater. If you’re trying to dry damp clothes or just give your hair some volume, a quality hairdryer is a necessity.

Nobody wants to live in a space with piles of clothes everywhere, food residue on the ground or even scraps of papers and dishes on tables or countertops. You do need to keep an eye on the dirty areas to keep it clean, and there’s a handy tool to make this job easier. A mini vacuum is crucial to help remove dust from carpets, clean up spills from Friday night, and wake up your roommates. That’s what we call success. A larger vacuum can be too heavy to lug around and occupies too much space. Shop online or in-stores to pick-up this must-have item.

Let’s be honest, Minnesota is infamous for its humidity. A humidifier can help improve room temperature and mysteriously remove bad odors at the same time. In the hot summer or dry winter, my skin is often dry and flaky if I don’t use my indoor humidifier. Just make sure to clean it regularly!

My Roommate Won’t Stop Eating My Food

Meghan Bishop Food is almost every college student’s go-to choice when it comes to where to spend their money, aside from paying for college itself, of course. No one wants to, or can afford to, dine out all the time, no matter how much you want Shuang Cheng for the second time this week. Grocery shopping can be a struggle. One trip to the grocery store can cost over $70, and on top of that, you have to do all the heavy lifting to get the food into your kitchen. All this work, time and effort, for what?!

Then, your roommate goes ahead and eats your last bagel before you wake up for your 8 a.m. class.

Whether it’s “borrowing” a few too many granola bars or “sharing” because you live together, I hope these tips will help with all your conflict-resolution needs.

Choose Your Own Adventure Roommate Edition

First, we have the non-confrontational approach. This is the most ideal option because, as a Gopher knows, the only place drama can be found on this campus is in Rarig on West Bank.

• Leave notes on your food in the fridge with your name on it • Share about how you hate spending money on food all the time • Bring up how you’re running low on food but don’t have the time to go grocery shopping • Think of yourself as a very sharing person Maybe you’re a little heated and wish your roommate would just go abroad on a whim already, but it’s the middle of the semester, so we continue on to the confrontational approach.

• Leave a note on the kitchen counter • Text them about it • Talk to them about it in-person • Bring it up while their friends are over (use with caution) Didn’t like any of the previous options or just hate communication? Try the creative approach.

• Hide your food around the apartment • Disguise your good food as gross food • Act like you don’t have any food • Buy locks (and hide the key) Lastly, we are all adults and should be holding ourselves accountable, especially when it comes to respecting others. However, there are times when a conversation just doesn’t get the job done. This approach is called, “what you could do, but shouldn’t do.”

• Start eating their food • Find their mom on social media and tattletale

What’s That Smell?

Elizabeth Stawski We’ve all been there: you walk into your apartment after class one afternoon and it hits you like a ton of bricks. You just cleaned your apartment — yesterday! It is faint yet noticeable, and enough to irritate any resident. What could that smell possible be? It is time to play sleuth and sniff out that stink. Here are some common stench culprits that can easily be overlooked during regular clean-ings and tips on how to get rid of them for good.

The Garbage Bin:

The Sink:

No ... this doesn’t mean take out your garbage again. If your garbage still smells after recently taking it out, it could mean that the actual plastic can is dirty. Take out the bag and spray the escaped food or mystery stains down with your favorite disinfectant, let it sit for a couple of minutes, and then wash the cleaner out.

You can also use a disinfecting wipe if your sink can't hold larger garbage bins.

Don’t forget to check your recycling too!

The sink often has many parts that could be producing the smell. Do you have a pan that has been “soaking” for days? What about any food stuck to the sink walls? A garbage disposal is also a common smell collector. To fix these, first wash any leftover dishes. Then, take your favorite disinfectant (Comet is my personal go-to) and sprinkle or spray the entire sink. Let it sit and then wipe it down with a clean sponge. There are also many garbage disposal cleaning pods that will foam and clean the inside of it. If you can’t find one or prefer a more natural route, try cutting up some lemons and grinding them in the garbage disposal for a lemony-fresh scent.

The Fridge:

“

A clean refrigerator is crucial to maintaining a fresh apartment. This includes checking your shelves for expired goods every couple of weeks and doing a thorough wipedown of the interior to remove any leftover spills, drips or pieces of leftovers. Try taking all of the items out from one shelf or drawer and cleaning the fridge in daily sections, so no food spoils in the process.

The Shower: “But the shower stays clean because you use it to wash yourself!” say critics. Wrong.

The shower can be a breeding ground for bacteria and mold if it is not properly cleaned and dried. Try spraying it down with a disinfectant (pro tip: liquid toilet cleaner works great to get soap stains off of the walls), then away goes any discoloration or staining. Washing your shower curtain and replacing the inner plastic curtain is also helpful after one year of use. Let the shower air-dry overnight to reveal a sparkling and stink-free shower space!

The very beginning of any apartment usually starts with one thing: shoes. Get in the habit of not leaving more than one pair of shoes in the front of the apartment door and after a long day of wear, air out shoes next to a window and put dryer sheets or tea bags inside of them. If they are unbearable, check to see if your shoes are washing machine safe, wash if possible and let them air dry. If that doesn’t work, you have every excuse to toss them and get a new pair. Your roommates (and any visitors) will thank you.

After months of burnt cheese and fallen chicken nuggets, it is no wonder something smells in there! If this is the case, remove all of the oven racks and scrub them in the sink with soap. To clean the interior, use a diluted cleaning mix such as Pine-Sol and water or vinegar, baking soda and water to spray down the inside. Scrub, then wipe the solution down with a water-soaked sponge. Keep the oven open so it can dry too. While you’re at it, wipe down the microwave too! It is probably gross.

Okay, so you’ve done all this and yet something still is a little off? Well, in that case, it is time to wipe down those window panes, open the windows and let the apartment air out on a cool night. Investing in a diffuser or plug-in could also give you the freshness boost you are looking for when nothing else seems to work. Happy cleaning, Gophers!

The Washing Machine: Maybe it is just a college thing, but doesn’t it seem strange that every campus washing machine is moldy? That ripe smell when you open the door is not normal and can be minimized with a few tricks. There are many mold stain and mildew stain removers in the market, can be used in the washing machine with caution. Spray the interior and let it sit for no longer than one minute, then wipe down the inside thoroughly and then start an empty cycle to clear out any residue bleach. Does bleach scare you? Try using baking soda and household vinegar to disinfect your machine. Don’t forget to always leave the door open after use to let it dry completely and prevent further bacteria growth.
