How To Hack Hygee: 4 Coziest Items Maria Kasel Everyone needs some hygee in their life to reach cozy contentment during the long Minnesota winters. Hygee helps with one’s overall well-being because it enhances coziness and comfort. Not to mention, it is a huge part of Danish culture and tradition, and they’re well-versed in the cold.

Below are my absolute favorite hygee items. Hygee is everything blankets, candles, essential oils and tea.

Relaxing Essential Oils

Furry Blankets Nestle up with a warm furry blanket to master coziness and comfort. Grab a book or turn on your favorite show in order to truly relax.

Nothing says hygee like essential oils along with an oil diffuser. Use soothing scents such as eucalyptus, lavender, bergamot and lemongrass to create a comforting environment.

Warm Candles

Hot Tea

If you don’t have a fireplace, pretend you do with a candle! Light multiple candles around your home and dim the lights to set the ambiance. Buy a fireside candle to get the full effect.

Tea will warm you up quickly after a long trek back from class. Teas with peppermint, ginger, turmeric and chamomile are especially healing during the cold season!

Winter break is coming up, and you’re probably excited to stay home and relax, or spend quality time with your families and friends. We hate to burst your bubble, but an effective way to spend winter break is preparing for the upcoming semester. To do this, you could look for a job or an internship, check out study abroad opportunities, or begin looking for a house/apartment for next year.

2. Look for a Job or Internship: If you’ve never had a job or internship before, then you should start searching for one this winter break. It’s often best for students to start earlier rather than later. First, a job or internship will allow you to gain professional experience within your major and make money. Second, some majors require students to participate in a job or an internship before graduation. To begin searching for employment opportunities during winter break, start by navigating the UMN Human Resources job board online. Otherwise, Goldpass, “the University of Minnesota’s professional job, internship, and volunteer database,” can also help students seeking professional experience with various organizations. Finally, students can also register for the University of Minnesota Job & Internship Fair 2020. This event is on Friday, February 28 from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., and allows students to network with various organizations.

3. Study Abroad: If you’ve decided to not pursue a job or internship, another way students can effectively spend winter break is to research study abroad programs. It offers students the opportunity to travel and learn about different cultures. Studying abroad can also fulfill specific requirements in some majors. To begin searching for your future study abroad opportunities at the U, start by researching the programs that best fit within your intended field of study. Then, if you have any questions about studying abroad, you can reach out to the Learning Abroad Center or your adviser for assistance. Afterward, you can make an appointment to follow-up with your study abroad advisor and prepare all essential travel documents. After you’ve done all of these steps and registered for the program, you will be ready to go!

4. Looking for a House or Apartment: If your lease is ending or if you’re planning to move closer to campus, then winter break is the perfect time for students to start looking for a new house or an apartment. To begin, start by developing a list of prospective homes by browsing through our Living Guide or researching online. Then, consider the cost, location and amenities of renting the place. Finally, consult with the leasing agents and prepare all necessary documents before moving in.

4 “Staycation” Museum Day Trips in Minnesota Caroline Pritchard As the days grow shorter and the temperatures begin to drop, winter break is quickly entering our thoughts. You may be looking for fun things to do around Minnesota over break that won’t cause frostbite or empty your wallet. Here is a guide to 4 uncommon museums to visit over winter break:

The Fagen Fighters Museum features different planes and vehicles used during World War II. There are varieties of fighter jets, bombers, tanks and more. It is open Tuesday - Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The cost of admission is a suggested $10 donation. If you’re interested in satisfying your sweet tooth, head over to Carl’s Bakery to enjoy their freshly baked donuts!

Blue Earth is home to the Jolly Green Giant Statue and the largest memorabilia collection in the world. The statue is 55.5 ft tall which makes a perfect, Instagram-worthy picture! Head into the museum which is open Monday Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for $2 a person to learn more about the friendly giant!

This is the site of the last known bank robbery attempt of the James-Younger Gang. The museum features the bank where the robbery was attempted in 1876. There are numerous landmarks in town marking where historic events occurred on this day. The hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday - Saturday and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. The admission rate for students is $3. If you’re lucky, Post Brands will be making chocolate cereal that day and the whole town will smell like brownies!

It feels very fitting that Minnesota would be home to the USA Hockey Hall of Fame. This museum is Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for $8. The museum is dedicated to preserving the top hockey memories and moments since 1973. There’s even a small scale rink to challenge your friends on!

Stay Fit and Healthy Over Winter Break Dave Villarama It’s all too easy to fall into the trap of a lengthy winter break — becoming a layabout for a month until classes start back up. I know I’ve told myself that I’ll just take a week to decompress, then it becomes two weeks, then before you know it you’re running to catch the Campus Connector every morning again. The winter gloom and biting cold certainly don’t help either, and cold and flu season is in full swing. Fear not, there’s plenty of fun activities you and your friends can do to make sure you can enjoy chicken soup on your own terms, not to soothe a raging flu!

1. The Recreation and Wellness Center — smack dab in the middle of East Bank — will hold nearly-identical hours over winter break: 5:45 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays, and 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays. It closes only from Dec. 23 to 25. Your student activity fees go towards your free entry with a valid UCard, so if you’re around over winter break, take the opportunity to visit the squat racks! Visit the RecWell Center website for more information on facility hours at the main facility, as well as complete lists of offerings like group fitness classes.

2. Beyond weightlifting or running around the indoor track, there’s a wide array of winter sports you can round up some friends to participate in. Minnesota is known as the State of Hockey, so why not head down to one of the 24 parks in Minneapolis alone that boast outdoor ice rinks? Even without a stick and puck, many offer separate ice sheets for simple skating, which also happens to be a great date idea! For the more competitive readers, the Minneapolis Parks and Recreation Department offers an adult pond hockey league with varying skill level brackets.

Parade Ice Garden in Minneapolis also hosts open, drop-in hockey throughout the winter, in an indoor venue. Visit the Minneapolis Parks website for information on city ice rink facilities and to register for organized adult hockey. If hockey and skating isn’t your thing, there’s plenty of other outlets for your pent-up winter energy. UMN students who are avid skiers and snowboarders are likely familiar with slopes like Afton Alps, Trollhaugen or Welch Village. Afton is a 30-45 minute drive away in Hastings, and Trollhaugen and Welch Village are about an hour to an hour and a half away. If you want to get

out of the cold and snow completely, you can always play court sports like basketball and tennis indoors at area gyms and the University recreation facilities.

3. Of course, none of these great opportunities to keep up that New Year’s fitness resolutions mean much if you’re confined to your bed, remembering what life was like when you could breathe through your nose properly. Make sure to take precautions against coming down with a cold or the flu, such as: • Get enough sleep - Finally being done with that 8 a.m. lab means you have more time to sleep in and get a full eight hours. Sleep deprivation, all too common among college students, is a factor in how easily one might get sick and how long it takes to recover, according to the Mayo Clinic.

• Keep your environment clean That means making sure perishable foodstuffs and standing water (I’m guilty of leaving a row of ever so slightly filled glasses on my nightstand) are disposed of promptly. Additionally, a good habit is to regularly use sanitizer wipes on counters, tables and door handles, as well as washing your hands frequently. Taking these steps to keep your living, eating and socializing space clean can help prevent uncomfort.

• Get vaccinated - The momentary discomfort of a needle prick is certainly preferable to a week or more of flu symptoms. What’s more, those who are at risk of severe injury and/ or death from the flu, such as the elderly, young children and those whose immune systems have been compromised by conditions like HIV or cancer-related chemotherapy,

are safer when everyone who can feasibly be immunized does so. Even if you’ve already come down with the flu this winter, the multiple different flu viruses still pose a health threat, and the vaccine protects against four different strains. The University’s Boynton Health Center offers flu shots at no charge to most of the University community, and you can set up an appointment and have any and all questions answered during business hours.

Prepare Warm Food For Your Winter Break Ningjun Tan Eating is essential to our everyday life — we need it to survive! Although you can find many wonderful places on campus to enjoy meals with your friends and families, it’s nice to cook at home sometimes. This article is here to help you prepare warm and delicious food to survive the cold winter season.

1. Personal Favorite - Hotpot!

Hotpot is one of the top choices for many Chinese in the winter.

Call a few friends or family members to have hotpot at home while staying comfortable and cozy. The Asian market is the best place to buy all the ingredients for the hotpot.

The first thing you need is the pot, our main tool for making a hotpot feast! Additionally, if you like spicy food, buy a small package of hotpot spicy sauce. After frying the sauce in the pot, pour hot water into it and cover.

As an experienced hotpot consumer, the most popular meats are beef roll and lamb roll. Cut the meat into small pieces and throw them into the hotpot. Don’t forget your vegetables! I recommend potato slices, lotus root slices, sour bamboo shoot, and garland chrysanthemum.

The there’s dipping sauce. The most traditional sauce is sesame paste. Stir it into the pot and leave for 30 minutes.

2. Enjoy Dessert with Milk Tea To make homemade milk tea post-nap, prepare a tea bag (black or green tea), and add it to your mug. Boil water and pour it over the tea bag into the tea cup. It’ll be hot, so wait a few minutes for the tea to brew. The sugar content amount is completely up to you. Isn’t it nice to be warm in the winter with your very own brewed tea? I think so!

3. Warm Soup Can Make a Warm Day According to a theory of Chinese medicine, in the winter you should eat warm food to stay healthy. Cooking a cup of delicious soup requires only two steps. Firstly, put the meat or substitute (lamb, chicken, tofu, etc.) into a pot with water and boil. While you are cooking the bulk of the soup, incorporate red dates and dried mushroom into the soup. Then, wait until the meat/ alternative is cooked, add a little salt to make the soup more savory. Enjoy, your soup will be ready in 15 minutes!
