4 DIY Decor Ideas Ningjun Tan

Project 1: La Luna

A wood cutting board

Black string (at least 50m)

A small number of nails

A pencil

(at least 2 handfuls)

A hammer

Instructions: Use a pencil to map out a moon shape on the wooden cutting board. I prefer an organic shape, but be creative and map out any shape your heart desires!

Draw some dots around the shape, make sure they have the same spacing in between each one so that it looks more charming. You can also draw five or six holes on the bottom if you want to add on jewelry hangers for your accessories like necklaces or body jewellery.

Use the hammer to drive the nails into the dots around the moon shape. Be careful when you are using the hammer because the nails are small to hold and you don’t want to hit your fingers! A pair of pliers will be your helpful assistant to drive in the nails. Don’t forget to put the nails at the bottom, so you won’t see any holes.

Then use your black strings and crisscross them inside of the moon shape. Looping the strings between nails, make sure that every single nail is wrapped around. It isn’t necessary to put strings as your decoration, however, strings can help it look more three-dimensional. You can wrap nails in whatever sequence you want.

Last but not least, you can choose to create an edge around the moon shape. I recommend you make an edge because it makes the piece look more finished.

Hang your accessories at the bottom nails and then the whole wooden moon decor on the wall. Your wall will be with more aesthetic and a point of visitors’ fascination.

Coffee Staple

2 white cups without any patterns

Knife or peeler

3 nail polishes with different colors

1 big pumpkin

5 toothpicks

1 spoon

A bowl that is taller than the cup

Color paint with different colors

Instructions: Add warm water to the bowl. The water line should be close to the top but not too full. Make sure that water doesn’t overflow when the cups are put into the water.

Instructions: Take your pumpkin and turn it on its side, make sure the side with stem is facing you because we want to use the stem as a nose.

Pour nail polish with your favorite color into the bowl with water and use a toothpick to stir it quickly. Don’t stir the colors into one color, make some special wave patterns with blended colors. A cup can have two different colors and the other one can have three or more — it’s totally up to you.

Draw a face around the stem. Create your own face for your pumpkin to make it unique.

Turn your pumpkin around, cut an opening for a lid in the back, then hollow the interior. Eventually, you will see an empty pumpkin — this is totally normal and your desired goal.

Hold the handle of one of the cups and put the bottom into the water. Put three-quarters or even half of the cup into the water.

Use the knife or peeler to carve the face. Cut the skin around eyes and mouth, and carefully peel it off at the mouth side.

After that, use the same technique to peel off the skin in front of the teeth.

October is here, it’s time for you and your friends to prepare for Halloween! How can you miss DIYing your own Halloween decorations?

Then carve out each tooth until you see the spooky face. If you want to make the pumpkin face more hilarious, use black or red acrylic paint to decorate the eyes. You will be sure to get a good looking fella to brag about!

Welcome to Roommate Horror Stories where we dive into some stories from students at the U.

“I’m just comfortable with my body” During my freshman year, I had the pleasure of living with a random roommate. In some cases, random roommates could end up being your best friends or someone you avidly avoid. In my experience, my roommate and I got along for the most part (a.k.a we were two people living in the same room … period). The first few days of living with each other went pretty smoothly, but as soon as the excitement of being in college started wearing off and we began to get used to each other, something changed.

Our dorm room was pretty small, so to respect each other’s space I assumed we would use our closets when we needed to change our clothes. My roommate had been going to the bathroom to change and so I expected that she wanted to avoid making the mistake of eye-contact while naked. I respected their boundaries, felt the same way, and made up my mind that the closet would be the best course of action to avoid that. We were both new to living with someone that we had never met before and tried our best to work out those first few awkward situations.

One morning I was sitting at my desk just watching Youtube videos and avidly avoiding doing homework. After needing some snacks, I got up from my desk and turned around. Suddenly, I was blindsided by the stark naked body of my roommate who was changing in the middle room without warning.

I was stunned and it felt like my body went into auto mode as I quickly turned around and sat back down at my desk. I patiently waited for the next ten minutes for her to finish changing before I got back up. At first, I didn’t think too much of it besides an accident, because hey it happens.

As the semester continued, I realized that this was no accident. There were numerous times where I got out of bed and she was in the middle of the room stark naked or I would turn around after getting something from my closet and she was … magically … naked? There were more times than I could count when I was confronted with my roommate’s naked body than I would like to admit. I told myself that it was just something I had to live with. I didn’t want to embarrass her if this was something she was used to and it felt weird to talk about it. That was until my friend stayed over one night. I really should have just talked to her.

One of my friends had to stay over one night and I didn’t think much of it as I went to bed because my roommate said it was okay. I woke up the next morning with a text, from my friend. She told me that she woke up that morning to my roommate standing by the door, right in front of where my friend was sleeping, naked … and just standing there. Let’s just say my friend did not ask me to sleep over ever again. I wasn’t surprised.

When my roommate came back to the dorm room that night, I asked how her day was and made some small talk. I have never been one to be comfortable with confrontation, but after the events this morning, I knew it was time to have that conversation. I explained to her that

her changing in the middle of the room made my friend uncomfortable and how it had been making me feel during the past couple of weeks. I apologized that I hadn’t brought it up earlier. I had high hopes, but the response I got was “I’m just comfortable with my body,” and then she went on to discuss how it was a shame I wasn’t comfortable with mine.

There... or Not? In my sophomore year, I was roommates with one of my good friends. We got along well and never had any problems.

If anything, I was the messier roommate who had to wake up early and went to bed late at night. I was much more problematic than she was.

However, one afternoon I was walking back from a meeting and went into the apartment headphones in, music on.

The door was locked so I assumed no one was in the apartment. My favorite

song at the moment was blasting and as I walked into our bedroom, I began to belt out the chorus. I heard some rustling and horrifyingly made eye contact with my roommate as she rubbed her eyes and slightly sat up in bed. I cringed as I remembered how loud I was singing, and I apologized quietly while quickly running out of the room, shutting the door behind me. I ended up staying in the living room until my roommate came out fully awake.

One of my roommates made a point to us that we should be locking the door at all times and so even when we were in the apartment we got into the habit of locking the door, but my brain still thought that meant no one was in there. Also, my roommate is five foot. She is small enough that if she covers herself with her blanket, I can’t tell if she’s in bed or not. I’m just making excuses at this point. This turned into an inside joke within our apartment if my roommate was in her bed taking a nap or not. Now I always check before to see if she’s in bed or not. So don’t be too quick to call out your roommate because at the end of the day, roommate mistakes are bound to happen and you could end up being the one to be wary of. Be careful, my next story could be about you!

Andy Byun Getting to your classes throughout the Minnesota winter is tough. Parkas and bundling-up just doesn’t cut it sometimes. Here are some tips that will help you stay warm and get to your classes safely and quickly.

Campus Shuttles Take advantage of the free campus shuttles. If you didn’t yet know, five bus routes cover most of the campus. The Campus Connectors bridge the gap between the St. Paul and Minneapolis Campuses.

There are three circulators on the Minneapolis campus. The University Avenue Circulator and the 4th Street Circulator cover both the East and West Bank. Lastly, there are the East Bank Circulator and the St. Paul Circulator. The campus shuttle maps show you the full bus routes. You can also find detailed service hours by visiting pts.umn.edu.

Many stops overlap or could be great back-ups if you’re running late. If you put some time into studying the stops that you use often, you can figure out which are the right routes for you. For example, I frequently took a shuttle from Ridder Arena to the Carlson School. By studying the routes, I learned that the Connectors and the 4th Street Circulator stop at Ridder Arena as well as the Connector takes me to Blegen Hall which was my back-up stop. By knowing this, I could avoid freezing in the cold. Laugh now, but i’ll be laughing in February.

Secondly, take advantage of bus layovers. The buses layover at certain spots throughout the day. The Campus Connector has layovers at the St. Paul Student Center and Blegen Hall. The 4th Street Circulator and University Ave.

The Gopher Way

Circulator have layovers by the Carlson School. Most of the time, it is much better to sit on the bus and wait than to freeze in the cold wondering when the bus will come. However, the buses tend to layover for quite some time so leave plenty of time before your classes start.

The University offers underground tunnels and skyways called the Gopher Way to reach various spots on campus.

The majority of buildings on the West Bank are connected via Gopher Way so you can easily get to the bus layover spots including Blegen Hall and the Carlson School. Even the St. Paul Student Center is connected to several buildings on the St. Paul campus via Gopher Way. Most tunnels and skyways are open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

It is possible that some Gopher Ways are restricted and you should see a notice at the entrance if this is the case.

Gophertrip GopherTrip is a real-time passenger information system that allows riders to know the location of the buses as well as predictions for the next arrival. There are several ways to use this system. First, you can download the GopherTrip app on your phone. Second, you can get text updates. Simply text “umnbus” with the stop number where you are planning to catch the bus to 41411. You can find the stop numbers on the map provided in this article. Lastly, you can visit umn.rider. peaktransit.com to check the information on your computer. So with GopherTrip, stay inside and warm as long as you can until the bus arrives!

You’re a month into the school year and have exhausted the days of going downtown, exploring campus and hanging out in your friends’ rooms. What next? You’re in luck! October marks the beginning of the spooky holiday season with a ton of new and exciting activities around the Twin Cities area.

1. Visit a Pumpkin Patch Visiting a pumpkin patch is not only a great way to take home a pumpkin you can decorate your room with (see our article about DIY jack-o-lanterns), but also a fun way to spend the day with friends. Many pumpkin patches also have rides, corn mazes and themed food, making it the perfect way to spend a relaxing day off-campus.

2. Haunted Houses Whether it’s ValleyScare or the countless local haunted houses throughout the Twin Cities, these spooky places are thrilling ways to spend your night and get in the Halloween spirit.

There are even some haunted hayrides if you don’t feel like walking all night!

3. Live Music Going to a concert is something you can do year-round, but is always an amazing option for a fall night out. There is nothing better than going to see some of your favorite artists live, and luckily for us, the Twin Cities is home to tons of concert venues. From big concert arenas, like the Target Center and the Xcel Energy Center, to medium-sized venues, such as the Armory and First Avenue, and to more personal places, like Varsity Theater (located right in Dinkytown) and Skyway Theatre, there are endless exciting concerts going on all the time.

4. Have a Halloween Party Have a small, medium or large group of friends over for a Halloween costume party throughout the Halloweekend. This is also the perfect opportunity to decorate your place with your new purchases from the pumpkin patch.

5. Halloween Festivals & Parties This is a 21+ party only. Throughout the Minneapolis and St. Paul area, there are numerous Halloween-themed festivals from the Twin Cities Horror Festival to the Minneapolis Halloween Bar Crawl. These events are another great way to spend a memorable night with friends while celebrating the beginning of the holiday season. There’s an event for every type of person so be sure to to lookout for parties throughout the month! Drink responsibly, kids!
