MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Hello MSAA members and Arrow readers!

As cool air approaches and the trees are changing I get the urge to sit in a tree stand and reflect on the 2024 MSAA shooting season. Oh, and I’m also on the lookout for deer. What a fun year! I was fortunate to shoot with people I have never shot with before. And, as always, great to see you all at the shoots. I would love to hear from you on ideas on how to increase membership, shoot attendance, or just plain chat. We have changed our policy meeting date to better prepare for regionals so look for more information regarding that.

I’m getting prepared for an out-of-state hunt and will have great stories to tell.

Please be safe out there, I care about my archery family too.

BOARD UPDATES...

OUTDOOR VICE PRESIDENT - TODD NELSON

Hello Archers! I’m writing this sitting on my Atv on a mountain side in Colorado. No luck for me yet but our MSAA president harvested his first elk a couple of days ago. Congrats Paul! The MSAA had a very successful outdoor tournament season, with numbers considerable higher than previous years. The summer started with the 900 and 50 meter hosted by the awesome people of the Great River Archery Club. Over 90 shot the 900 on Saturday and over 80 shot the 50 meter on Sunday.

The MSAA state field tournament was held at the beautiful Rapids Archery club in conjunction with the MAA. 103 people shot the tournament with both organizations over 70 shooters. Many Archers shot both organizations which is why this cooperation is so successful for both organizations. A big THANK YOU to all that supported the MSAA and host clubs.

Happy hunting!

TREASURER - BRUCE STROM

This year we had a total of 1,423 shooters at our MSAA Regionals and Championship matches. This is up a little bit from last year and up a lot from the COVID crisis of 2021. Finances continue to look strong even though some of our normal expenses are a bit higher due to inflation. Many thanks to our Host Clubs that put on our matches enabling us to continue to grow archery in Minnesota!

SECRETARY - LORI DARGATZ

Happy fall everyone. It has been a great MSSA shoot season this summer and it was wonderful seeing all the shooters out enjoying the beautiful courses and the beautiful weather in Minnesota. Thank you, to all the clubs that worked hard to make each shoot a success. When you shoot all five events; Indoor, 900, 50m, Field, and the 3D you can qualify to compete for the Grand Champion. If you have never shot all five it is a challenge and a lot of fun, give it a try. Enjoy your fall and for those of you who are out hunting, I hope you find what you are looking for.

INDOOR VICE PRESIDENT - LEEANN BOES

Happy Fall Archers. As we get into the fall archery season, probably the thing furthest from your minds is indoor target archery. However, indoor leagues will be starting before we know it and we can start getting ready for the 2025 MSAA indoor regional qualifiers. This year there will be 4 weekends that hosting clubs and pro-shops can hold regional tournaments. The weekends will be January 11-12, January 18-19, January 25-26 and February 1-2. If you are associated with a club or pro-shop that is interested in hosting regionals please reach out to me and we can discuss what is needed to get you on the list. For those of you who hosted last year, I will be reaching out to determine if you are still interested and which weekend(s) you want to hold regionals. Please stay safe out in the woods and I look forward to seeing you all again at the 2025 MSAA State indoor tournament in April hosted by the Duluth Archery Club to be held at the 4 Season Event Center in Carlton MN.

EDITOR - STACIE MULSO

Happy Fall, I want to mention we will be printing a November Arrow this year. With the Annual Meeting date moved up to December 7, we moved up that last issue to November. The deadlines for any ads or information is October 15, 2024. Let me know if you have any questions!

BOWHUNTER VICE PRESIDENT - MARK LATOURELLE

The MSAA outdoor tournament season concluded August 3 rd and 4 th with the 3D Championships hosted by the Saratoga Archery Club in Tracey, MN. Saratoga put on a fantastic shoot on a very challenging field. I heard nothing but compliments all weekend. Great job Saratoga!

By now you should have received an email with the MSAA crossbow survey in it. Please take the time to fill out this survey. There will undoubtably be more crossbow legislation in the future and this survey is one of the ways the board will have to know how the memberships wants us to go. This is how you get your voice heard.

That time of year so many of us wait for is here, the fall hunting season. Good luck to all the bowhunters out there and remember two important things. Pick a spot and if your feet are off the ground, wear a harness! Good luck everyone.

get to know your Board Members

Q. What is your day job?

A . For the past thirty years I have worked with people with cognitive disabilities in a home setting. The work is rewarding and teaches you perspective, patience, and the true meaning of struggle.

Q. Tell us about your family...

A . I am married, my husband Adam is a wonderful supporter of me and he and I enjoy shooting archery and fishing together. We have an adorable dog, Brownie. The three of us have great adventures.

Q. How did you get into archery?

A When my husband and started dating he shot archery. I would watch him shoot leagues and that year the state indoor was in Warroad, MN. I was facinated by all the people and differnt shooting styles. I was hooked and within a year I was shooting. My first bow was a Matthew’s Genius Pro. I quickly moved on but it was a fun way to start shooting. Twenty-one years later I still love it..

Q. What is your advice to someone who would like to start shooting archery?

A . Just do it! Just try it. Archery shops everywhere are set up to accommodate new shooters and can help you find the bow that will work the best for you. If you know people who shot get their thoughts and do some research, videos and articles on shooting archery. Archery equipment is a expensive so do not impulse buy in the beginning and get a bow that fits what you want to do when it come to shooting; target, trad, hunting.

Q. What do you enjoy most about archery?

A . I like to set yearly goals for myself to improve my shooting. The best has to be spending time with my archery family. We are so supportive of each other when things are going well and even more so when it is a bad shooting day (or week). Archery has open up many opportunities for me; the Vegas Shoot, and elk hunting in Colorado.

Q. Do you target shoot and/or hunt?

A . I both target shoot and hunt.

Q. Do you have family members who shoot archery?

A My husband shoots, my mother in law and my nephews.

Q. Do you have any life lessons you’ve taken away from your time shooting archery?

A It is usually me not the equipment for the reason I am shooting poorly. If things are going wrong, what am I doing, not doing, what do I need to change? You need to practice to improve. A good support system (archery family) is really important.

This summer has been busy for archery in central Minnesota. T.H.E. Great River Archery Club (GRAC) has hosted or supported multiple archery events totaling over 700 archers from June through August. GRAC was honored to host the MSAA 900 and 50 meter tournaments at the Stearns County Mississippi River Park, June 8th and 9th. The location and weather was outstanding albeit a trifle windy for the 50 meter.

GRAC also hosted in July a three day 3d challenging family fun shoot. Forty 3d targets were placed through out the Mississippi River Park. These targets were very realistically placed along the northern Mississippi River bayou backwaters, through the Prairie restoration of wild flowers and grass where the elk and buffalo roamed, to the scrub oak and pines where the deer and bears were placed in natural settings. The bow hunter and challenge stakes were just that, challenging. Too challenging for you, one could shoot from any distance you felt comfortable from.

GRAC supported Archery County’s 3d Powder Ridge shoot by providing concessions near the top of the ski hill. Approximately 425 archers participating in the challenging 3d event. The weather was perfect and archers from all skill levels accepted the challenge of terrain and distance. GRAC also hosted the Minnesota Senior Games archery competition. On August 17th seniors from multiple states gathered to shoot a 900 event this being a national qualifying year.

The Stearns County Mississippi River Park archery range in now open again after a major renovation. There are targets from 10 to 80 yards. The Stearns County Park Department is very supportive of archery and they say somewhere between 15,000 and 20,000 archers use this range each year.

GRAC supports the local Junior Olympic Archery Development (JOAD) team and the Sartell National archery in Schools Program (NASP).

Archery practice is intensifying now that hunting season is just around the corner. Stay safe, shoot straight and GOOD HUNTING!!

“1954, it was a very good year. Bohn, a motion picture projectionist, had screened a movie on Howard Hill hunting in Africa with bow and arrow. He came home and said, ‘ ‘it looks like fun, let’s try it. Maybe we can hunt deer.” The next day he bought a three dollar bow and three arrows and the fun began.”

In addition, I won the Michigan State Target Tournament in 1978. I won first place on Midwest Archery team for the National Sports Festival in 1979 with the team winning a bronze. I was on five United States Archery Teams. My fondest shooting memory was in 1971 when I broke 6 Ambassador Cup records and two world records on the FITA Round, and I was the first woman to shoot two back to back 1200%. Unfortunately, this was not entered in the record book as Canada failed to register the tournament. I did many trick shooting programs to promote archery for schools, churches, and competed against cities finest, their local police in tournaments, the bow against the hand gun. My partner on these tricks shoots was my pal, Gunner Drake, my Chesapeake Bay Retriever. I had taught him how to pull arrows from the butt and return them to me. He was a big hit with the children.

And that is how I remember those wonderful archery years.
