TABLE OF CONTENTS
Well, 2023 is a wrap for all of our shoots. What a great year it was. The following clubs hosted state shoots this year: Duluth Archery Club hosted State Indoor; Great River Archery Club hosted the 900 and 50 M; Rapids Archery Club hosted our Field shoot in conjunction with the MAA; and finally Duluth held the 3D shoot. Thank you, you all put on great shoots! If you did not attend these events, you will have to plan on getting to them next year.
Next on our agenda is ramping up for Indoor hosted by Hibbing Archery Club. It is a new location so that will be exciting. The other thing that is on my mind is in January we will be having our policy meeting and I want to toss out this challenge. ATTEND!!! Your voice is valued and if you want to see changes to our organization, we need to hear them. We are up for suggestions and this is the place where these changes take place.
We have a couple Governor positions that are open and would like to fill them to get representation in those areas. That’s all I have for now. Thanks to all of the clubs that hosted 2023 shoots and cannot wait to see you all in the very near future.

OUTDOOR VICE PRESIDENT - TODD NELSON
The 2023 MSAA outdoor tournament season is a wrap. It started in June with the 900 and 50 meter tournaments hosted by the Great River Archery Club at the Mississippi County Park north of St Cloud. The participation was great, the weather was pleasant and GRAC did a fantastic job of organizing and running the tournament.
In July we headed to Andover where the Rapids Archery club hosted the MSAA and MAA Field tournaments on their beautiful range, with separate field, hunter, and animal ranges. Once again the combined tournament proved to beneficial for both both organizations, with the number of shooters being substantially higher for both organizations. The weather was great and The Rapids club did a terrific job of running both tournaments, which can be challenging. The last stop of the summer was the Duluth Archery Club where they hosted the MSAA 3D in August. DAC did a great job of setting up a very fun course with many unique props that made for a very enjoyable experience.
Now it’s time for many of us to use the skills that we honed this summer to try to put some meat in the freezer. I have already found out what happens when you shoot a elk for 45 yards but he is 52 yards, a low non-lethal hit.
Good luck hunting!

TREASURER - BRUCE STROM
In 2023 we had a combined total of 1,404 MSAA members who shot our Regionals and the State Championships. That is a nice recovery from the lows of the pandemic years. The clubs that were the hosts for these matches brought in a total of $19,167.00 to their clubs which included the Duluth Archery Club, Great River Archery Club, the Rapids Archery Club, and the 16 clubs that hosted our Indoor Regional shoots. We would like to give a special shout out to our 2023 hosts, you are very much appreciated!! If your club would like to be considered to host a match in 2024 please let us know before the Policy meeting in January.
SECRETARY - JESSICA ANDERSON
I want to extend a huge thank you to all of the clubs and associated members that hosted shooting opportunities over the past year. In order for the MSAA to continue to have purpose, we rely on all of you to continue to grow your
love of archery and share your time and talents with those around you in the different capacities that you do. From an administrative side, we’re continuing to work on sustainable options to streamline our membership tracking. The best of luck to all of you as you head into the fall season, and be safe!
INDOOR VICE PRESIDENT - LEEANN
Hello from your new Indoor VP. It is my pleasure to fill this position, and look forward to serving the MSAA members. I have had the pleasure of meeting with the Hibbing Archery Club in preparation for the 2024 State Indoor Tournament. The facility, the Iron Trail Motors Event Center in Virginia, will be a great venue for the next Indoor tournament. Any clubs or pro-shops interested in hosting the 2024 State Regional Tournaments should contact me so we can get a list together and get the dates and locations set so all of our members can get ready for another State Indoor Tournament.
EDITOR - STACIE MULSO
Congratulations to all the shooters this summer! I continue to look for story ideas, so let me know if you or someone you know has a story to tell! Remember the November Arrow is a printed one, watch for it in the mail.

JOE ZIMMERMAN - WEBMASTER
Q. What is your day job?
A . I am a Web Designer at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall, MN.
Q. Tell us about your family...
A My Mom is retired and my Dad is the first year carpentry instructor at Alexandria Community and Technical College. They live in Alexandria, MN. I have a Sister who lives in Austin, MN with her husband and two girls.
Q. How did you get into archery?
A . When I was 13, I went through my firearms safety course and the instructor talked about bowhunting and showed us some of the equipment he had. We didn’t get to shoot any bows during the course but I knew I wanted to shoot a bow after that. I saved up my money and bought my first bow from Scheel’s in St. Cloud in 1997. It was a Hoyt Magic youth bow. A family friend came over and helped get the bow set up for me. There weren’t any archery clubs around Alexandria at the time so my Dad bought some straw bales and set up a backstop in our back yard to put my foam target in front of. I shot in my back yard for a few years until I grew out of that bow. I didn’t pick up another bow until I joined Saratoga Archery club in 2012 and I have been shooting since then.
Q. What is your advice to someone who would like to start shooting archery?
A Find a place to take beginner lessons and/or find an archery club to get involved with. The main thing is to explore the different aspects of archery and enjoy the journey.
Q. What do you enjoy most about archery?
A . I enjoy meeting people at all the archery events and the thrill of hitting what I’m aiming at.
Q. Do you target shoot and/or hunt?
A Currently I only target shoot.
Q. Do you have family members who shoot archery?
A Currently no family members shoot a bow.
Q. Do you have any life lessons you’ve taken away from your time shooting archery?
A A life lesson I’ve taken away from archery is, what you put into life is what you get out of it. For example, being accurate and consistent with a bow takes practice and effort. Also, sometimes “archery” happens and you just nock another arrow and shoot again.

Alexandria, MN —Alexandria Technical and Community College continues to be a pioneer in higher education in Minnesota by establishing an archery team, becoming the first 2-year college in Minnesota to offer competitive archery through USA Archery's Collegiate Archery Program.
Alexandria College is Minnesota’s top-rated community college for cost, academic programs, and job placement. The college is a destination college with over 50% of the student body coming from distances exceeding 50 miles. Alexandria College offers on-campus student housing, fostering a vibrant campus community.
The addition of the archery team will continue to enhance the student life programming and athletic opportunities available to students.
"Alexandria Technical and Community College has been working with the Alexandria Shooting Park for many years with our Clay Target League, and to partner together to host archery is a great fit for our community," said Sean Johns, dean of educational services and athletic director. "We’re proud to be a destination college for prospective high school students across the state and surrounding region who are deciding to go to college, and to give them the opportunity to pursue their passion of Archery and also reside in Minnesota."
The Alexandria Technical and Community College’s new head coach of competitive archery, Dan Gates, poses with his bow for a photo at Alexandria Shooting Park, Alexandria Minn., September 1.
The head coach of the Legends archery team is Dan Gates. Gates, an Alexandria College alum, is a USA Archery level two certified instructor. His passion for archery stems from bow hunting with his father while growing up in central Minnesota.
Gates's love of archery has led him to share it with others and donate his time to contribute to the development of youth archery in central Minnesota. In 2019, he became the youth archery coach for the Douglas County 4H Shooting Sports and Wildlife program through the University of Minnesota Extension. Archery has been a quickly growing sport with the help of programs like 4H and National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP).
“I am very eager to begin the work to build a highly successful collegiate archery program here in Alexandria and am honored to be leading our Legends," Gates said. "I look forward to being able to continue developing archers’ abilities, at the state collegiate level. I am confident that Alexandria College will have positive representation for Minnesota Athletics and look forward to putting my everexpanding archery knowledge to work for our athletes’ individual and team success.”
The assistant coach for the Legends Archery team is Tyler Notch. Like Gates, Notch’s love of archery was created through bow hunting with his father in Minnesota. Notch is one of the four owners of the Alexandria Shooting Park. He also serves as the current Alexandria Chamber of Commerce board president, sits on the Alexandria City Planning Commission, and serves on the Executive Board of the Minnesota Backcountry Hunters and Anglers Board of Directors.
“I have a passion for coaching others,” Notch said. “Being able to serve as the assistant coach for the Legends Archery team gives me an opportunity to ensure the future of the sport and help our younger generations find passion in the sport like I have. Archery has truly changed my life for the positive, and I am eager to help others find their true selves through archery.”
The addition of the Legends Archery team and the building of the J.A. Wedum Foundation Hall shows how Alexandria College continues innovating and strengthening its commitment to education, athletics, and fostering a thriving student community.

OFFAL WILDLIFE WATCHING
Who is eating your guts?
What? The purpose of this research is to better understand what and when species use deer gut piles (offal) provided by hunters across all of Minnesota.
Why? To better understand how hunter-provided carrion affects wildlife food webs.
Who? Seeking volunteer deer hunters, those that participate in deer camps, or know hunters and have access to deer gut piles immediately after the deer is harvested and field dressed.
Also seeking volunteers to help ID project photos at www.zooniverse.org.
When? Minnesota white-tailed archery, firearms, and muzzleloader deer hunting seasons. Please refer to MN DNR hunting regulations to determine the legal hunting dates for your tag.
Where? We need volunteers from throughout Minnesota.
How? Hunt as you normally would and help contribute valuable data to wildlife research. Project cameras available for use. All you need to do is:
1. Clean your deer as you normally would
2. Set up game camera to record what species use the gut pile
3. After 1 month retrieve the camera and send us the images

Straight as an Arrow
The everyday topic that turned into an all-day shooting trial
BY ADAM KRAMER, T.H.E. GREAT RIVER ARCHERY CLUB
An archer improves accuracy by decreasing the inconsistencies that can occur within their shot. This has been seen through an emphasis in bow tuning, form critique, matching arrow weights, and fletching type/orientation amongst other things deemed pertinent. After flirting with the brink of paranoia, we ask ourselves “what is truly important? What will make the difference down range and is fiscally or physically feasible to achieve?” Arrow straightness is a leading factor in arrow quality, and associated in greater precision. Whether hunting or competing, it is something that has been agreed upon as vital to better flight. At the pro shop, it a daily talking point with customers as new comers and old timers in the sport look for advice on sorting through the numerous and overwhelming options available in arrows. Arrow manufacturers offer a plethora of arrow spines, diameters, weights, and fletch type, which alone requires large investment on the behalf of retailers to stock, only to be magnified by different straightness tolerances of each model. An archer has to decide if the idea of straighter arrows is worth the increased price. For example the Victory VAP arrow shaft, a .166 inside diameter shaft common for hunting and target is offered in three straightness grades. The price for a dozen bare shafts in the smallest straightness deviance
(.001”) is $199 approximately or $16.5 per shaft. The poorest straightness (.006”) is priced at $149 per dozen or $12.4 per shaft. This results in a difference of about $45 per dozen shafts. Easton Superdrive 27 shafts, a large diameter carbon shaft is offered in a .005” and .002” tolerance. They are priced at $179.99 and $225.99 respectively, producing a $45 price disparity. This difference makes archers think “Am I buying improved accuracy or a placebo?”
My curiosity has driven me to the point of action, along with being an archery equipment salesman, I saw it as my responsibility to seek real data in regards to something I educate customers on daily. On a sultry September afternoon I took to my backyard range, along with 9 arrows of the same model, length, spine, and fletch, only differed by their straightness tolerance. The arrows were Victory VFORCE 300 spine arrows, 100 grain tip resulting in a total 475 grains. I made arrows in the Elite (.001”), Gamer (.003”), and Sport (.006”) tolerances for this study. I used my hunting bow, a Bowtech SS34 (70 pound draw and 30.5” draw length on the performance module resulting in 283 fps) for the study which occurred entirely at a distance of 50 yards. Orange aiming dots with a drawn mark to identify the center were used to easily record the distance from center, in inches,
20
Minnesota Arrow May 2023
for every shot. I shot three dots each round, making sure to shoot one of each of the arrow tolerances at each dot every end. Arrows were shot in random order. After 150 arrows were shot and recorded, I switched out the field points for a fixed bladed 100 grain Slick trick SS3 1 1/8 inch cutting diameter broadhead. I recorded 25 shots with each arrow tolerance for a total of 75 broadhead shots again at a distance of 50 yards. Average distance from center was calculated along with a standard deviation of distances for each arrow tolerance. Average distance from center with field points for the Elite were 1.14 inches (with standard deviation of .70 inches) Gamer averaged 1.74 inches (with standard deviation of .96 inches) and Sport averaged 1.76 inches from center (with standard deviation of .96 inches). Broadhead results for the Elites averaged 2.04 inches form center (standard deviation of .74 inches) Gamer averaged 2.26 inches (standard deviation of 1.04), Sport averaged 2.35 inches (standard deviation of 1.32 inches).
This study produced results that led me to ponder its impact on real world application. The field point trial showed that the straighter arrows produced shots that averaged closer to center and less deviance arrow to arrow. The Gamer and Sport arrows strayed slightly more for sure, but apply that approximate .6” greater average to your target face of choice. At 50 yards, a field/hunter face 5 ring measures just under 4”, a 12 ring on a medium sized 3d target approximately 2”, the 10 ring on a 80 cm multi-color target measures just over 3”. Which arrow would you take to the competition? In theory, the Elite arrow with the lowest average distance from center would yield more points on average than the others on the previously mentioned target faces. Now if a person came in to the shop in April looking to stock up the family for a summer filled with shoots such as Total Archery Challenge, Bowfest, and Powder Ridge then I would say maybe consider the other Gamer and Sport options since these are 3D shoots that success is measured by least amount of lost arrows as compared to x count.
The broadhead test was something that I wanted to incorporate since most arrows are sold for the purpose of hunting and figured if there was to be an accuracy difference then fixed broadheads would show it. The average difference from center
doubled for the straightest arrow while deviation remained unchanged. Average distance from center was about .25” greater for the lesser two tolerances while the standard deviation increased .25” and .58” for the Gamer and Sport arrows respectively when compared to an Elite. 50 yards is beyond the comfort level of most bowhunters, but was used to be able to compare more directly to the field point study.
In both studies the Elite arrow flew the most true and consistent, deviations grew for the lesser tolerances, but not at a necessarily exponential rate. I would say that the arrows could be used interchangeably without concern. It is up to the individual archer to determine what arrow straightness meets their budget and mental peace of mind. If the lesser tolerance is deemed satisfactory, then I recommend putting the savings towards a more durable arrow with higher quality components such as better nocks, inserts/outsets/more desirable custom fletching. An arrow that is more durable will keep its integrity and consistency longer, while staying in the active lineup longer due to being less apt to crack upon impact from target debris or other incoming arrows. It is important to also mention that not all arrows of equal straightness are of equal quality. Spine consistency is something that can also impact accuracy and group consistency, but can differ by manufacturer. For every question answered by this study, another question arises unanswered and the desire for future inquiry increases, which is all part of the sport called archery that we love so much.

• New Time Clock
o See what we can look in to as far as this is related. Incorporating with what MAA and Waseca clubs have. Buzzer incorporated with the clock. Visibility is better.
o $2,500 for two clocks
o MAA has a four-clock system.
o Add it to the list for the policy meeting.
• Scoring Process Review
o Ran into an issue at the 50-meter. People making changes to cards that should not be. Nothing was done about it at the time. Look into a solution to this to prevent this from happening in the future. Should never be scoring your own official card.
o Scorecard verification process.
– We don’t have this built into all our tournaments.
o Keep everyone with their peers.
o Running totals versus individual totals?
– Do we need to modify our scorecards for this?
o Is there a disciplinary policy?
o Add the extra block on the scorecard for round total and then running total?
– Update announcements to accommodate this. Emphasis that scores are compared after each end, including score and x count.
Swap green and white card with your “shooting partner.”
o Revisit all scorecards to make sure they have an end score and a total score.
• Readings: Work with Paul to get a list of new readings that we need to put together for the policy meeting.
• Appoint a committee to look at the divisions, go through and look at numbers and determine if we can eliminate some. Come up with a way to assist with defining which division someone should be shooting. Need to review each class and determine which traits coincide with each.
• CC Payments for registrations. Would the MSAA be interested in this?
• Advertising the in arrow.
o Rates have not gone up.
o Put this on the board and governors to assist with ad generation for the Arrow.
o What’s the reach? What is the value? Stacie to put together a flyer that highlights the different levels of ads, including size and cost.
• Bowfest: What kind of investment we could do for this. Offer Bowfest advertising within the Arrow. They invested into the Indoor last year, so this would be a good way to do our part.
• Lifetime Membership question.
Next Meeting: Oct/Nov – Let’s shoot for the end of October, beginning of November.
Meeting adjourned. Todd and Leann. 6:18.
