Greetings Minnesota Archers, I hope 2022 finds you happy and in good health! Still looking for someone to step up and become MSAA President. If you know of someone that would be interested for this position, or even if they are not an archer and would be a great fit, please let us know, that would be awesome. We have a lot going on right now and this would help out tremendously. We also have other open positions with in our state organization that should be filled as well. We have juggled a few changes over the past couple months and if they are all passed, I am looking forward to seeing the results. If you have suggestions on how things are managed, or on how things are executed, please share with us. Reach out to your Governors in your area or directly to a Board member and we can entertain all suggestions. Reach out to me at 507.401.0469 if you feel the need. One more thing. OUTDOOR VICE PRESIDENT - TODD NELSON Greetings fellow archers, welcome back to the printed version of the Arrow magazine. The last two years have been a challenge for most of us involved in archery with restricted shooting opportunities. Hopefully 2022 will start to get back to normal starting with the MSAA regionals. The 2022 MSAA state indoor tournament will be April 9-10 in Redwood Falls MN. Let’s show how resilient archers are and make this years indoor the grand event that it has been in the past! The location of the outdoor tournaments will be decided at the MSAA policy meeting January 15th 2022. The dates have been set however, Target/50 meter is June 11-12 2022, Field July 16-17 2022 and 3D August 6-7 2022. Let’s make 2022 great and support our local clubs and state organizations. RECORDS KEEPER - PAUL PARSONS All records have been tallied up and certificates have been printed and mailed out soon as well as brought to State Indoor to hand out. Postage is so expensive and this will save on some dollars for the organization. If you feel there are missing certificates, or inaccurate information, please let me know and I can research this and make corrections. It is very important from here on to fill out score cards correctly, legible, and in its entire in order for me to keep records straight. I look forward to the 2022 season. To be honest, things are a little out of sorts and we all are doing our best to get information out to you all in a timely manner. TREASURER - BRUCE STROM Just a quick update on the MSAA financial situation. The past couple of years COVID has impacted our memberships like all of us knew it would. The good news is we have nothing to worry about as the Board has built up enough reserve over the years for just such a downturn. At the same time our costs have been going up over the years and we need to keep up with these increases. Consequently the Board recently voted to increase both the shooter fees and Membership fees. These fees have not been raised for years and the Board felt it necessary to try to match the increase in ongoing yearly expense. On another note, the 2022 Regional Indoor shooter numbers are just starting to come in and we are looking much better than last year. Overall, with the new increases in place, we are in good shape financially and we are looking forward to a much more normal year this year and many more years to come. Let’s get shooting!!! EDITOR - STACIE MULSO I’m excited to be part of the process to help bring back the printed Minnesota Arrow. Our goal is to print 2 editions per year and also create 2 more online editions. It is a great way to get information about upcoming shoots. This issue is a bit light on club information as we get back into the process of printing, but my hope is that you will send me your upcoming club shoot dates/activities to put in the next issue. Looking forward into 2022 I will be working on getting the records listed within the MSAA App. We will continue our research into a CRM or Membership Management System to centralize and create a standard way of handling and managing membership information. Also I will be looking into a different website system in order to update the web template.

A MEMORABLE HUNT “I saw the bull raking his big antlers on the tree broadside to me, but there was no way to get a shot.” – Todd Nelson

hen I went on my first elk hunt 25 years ago I was warned that I may get hooked, and I did. On my twentieth elk hunt I finally harvested my first bull after getting five cows. This was the tenth time that I hunted the same over-the counter unit in Colorado, although it wasn’t our original destination. I was hunting with my long time hunting partner Mike Holland and his son Bo, and we decided to try a new hunting unit forty miles to the south. After 2 1/2 days of frustrating hunting we decided to pack up camp and go to our old unit that we knew quite well. The first evening there I heard the first of many bugles from this bull in an area that we call Nick’s tank, named after MSAA member Nick Pieske, whom I had hunted with several times there. The area is very difficult to hunt because of thick undergrowth with tangled deadfalls everywhere. A ten yard or more shot was impossible most of the time, so my preferred hunting method was to sit where two or more trails crossed where I could get more than a ten yard shot and try to call the elk to me. On the morning of September 10th, our last day to hunt, I was once again by Nick’s tank hunting the same area and bull that I had spent most of the last five days hunting. This morning the herd had moved to the other side of the ridge and they were very vocal, lots of cows chirping and the bull was bugling frequently, but I could not call them out of the thick cover that they were in. The bull was staying in the same area about two hundred yards to the south of me. After two hours of taunting with his bugles, I decided that I had to go after him in the thick cover. Every ten minutes or so he would bugle and I was getting closer and closer. Finally, I saw a 25 foot tall tree waving about 30 yards from me. I snuck around a big bushy tree until I saw the bull raking his big antlers on the tree broadside to me, but there was no way to get a shot. So I circled around the backside of him so that I could

sneak in closer. I got up and straddled two deadfalls which elevated me about three feet and gave me a better opportunity for a shot. I watched him rake the tree and bugle for several seconds before he turned broadside and gave me a thirty-yard shot through a small opening in the brush. The shot hit its mark and he actually angled towards me and stopped ten yards away – hidden behind the big bushy tree that I had just used to conceal my approach to him. He stayed there a couple of minutes, coughing and gurgling, an indication that my arrow had found his lungs. He then moved around the tree and laid down in sight of me but behind branches, preventing another shot. Eventually he got back up and came around the tree and turned to look at me five yards away, at which time I shot him in the lungs again. As he stumbled away from me I took one more shot which ricocheted off of his laid back antler beam and ended up in his huge vitals also. I watched him expire twenty-five yards away making for a very easy tracking job. With the temperature heading into the eighties I hurried back to camp which was a twenty minute ATV ride, hoping to find Mike and Bo there. Mike and I loaded up the backpacks, left a note for Bo and made our way back to start the daunting process of getting the meat and cape of the 900 pound bull off the mountain before it spoiled. Bo eventually found us and two trips apiece with heavy loads in our packs we had meat, antlers and cape back to the ATV’s three hours after I shot him. As soon as we got back to camp we loaded everything in the pickup and I headed down the mountain to the meat locker in Paonia, CO where the meat was cooled and processed for the trip home the next day. This extremely exciting and fun elk hunt happened three weeks after I was honored to be inducted into the Minnesota Archery Hall of Fame. It is safe to say that 2021 was a very memorable year for me!

I’m sure there are quite a few people that are unaware that Minnesota has an Archery Hall of Fame and it has been around for a while... Originally it started as an Oldtimers Party in 1997, but quickly turned into the Minnesota Archery Hall of Fame. The first hall was located in a spare office room owned by Sam Fudenberg. From there it moved to the Pope and Young Museum in Chatfield MN. Spring of 2021 the building was sold and we had to move. We are currently looking for a new home with hopes of putting something together soon. The first induction was held in 1997 when 3 archers were inducted. They were Victoria Cook, Allen Muller, and Robert Rhode. The next induction was in 1999 with Ernie Henkel, Bruce Mori-Kub0, Evelyn Mori-Kubo, James Ploen, and Earl Goodrich-Lee inducted. Further inductions were; 2001 - Robert Barrie, Myles Keller, Michelle Ragsdale, Willard (Buck) Doran and Dr. James Shubert. 2003 - Ron Carlson, Robert Kadlac, Arlene Rhode, Sam Fudenberg, and Clela Wanamaker. 2013 - Wes Hagemeyer, Marlene Odahlen-Hinz, Eldon Larson, Julene Hakl, and Cliff Zwickey. 2016 – Roger Ekert, Jan Ekert, Bob Fratzke, Dana Klos, Stan Meyer, Rick Reidel, Jerry Podratz, Nancy Sanderson, Bob Sevey, and Les Hagemeyer 2020 – Dalen Caspers, William (Bill) Hakl, Paul Laven, Todd Nelson, Jerry (Hooker) Hokkela, John (Dewey) Hutchinson, and Gerald Killian. The next induction is being planned for April of 2023 and in August of 2022 we will be looking for future nominees. Dalen Caspers

Over the years, Dalen has shot many local, regional and state indoor and outdoor tournaments, taking home many trophies...

Dalen is a State Champion archer, both indoor and outdoor, who has shot traditional archery equipment throughout his entire career in archery. He is an accomplished musician and vocalist, having performed with various gospel groups in the Clara City area. His gospel quartet recorded four Gospel albums and he directed a forty man (all male) senior gospel chorus as well as a church choir of men and ladies In 1958, Dalen and Janice married and moved into an upstairs apartment in Clara City. Dalen met Stan Meyer who lived near there, and became interested in archery. Stan had a bale next to his garage. Dalen purchased a 50# Bear bow and a quiver of arrows from Kenny Priebe and quickly became hooked on Traditional archery. After purchasing his second bow, he shot many Flint rounds at the Little Crow Archery indoor range in the Willmar City auditorium. Dalen and Janice raised four son’s who all shot archery and hunted with their dad. In the late fifties nearly every town in the area had an outdoor archery range. A league was formed, called the West Central Archery League. Prior to shooting the upcoming tournaments Dalen and Stan would shoot the ranges to familiarize themselves with the lay out and mainly just for the fun of shooting. In 1959, Dalen and his team, Stan Meyers, Ron Carlson, Don Coleman, and Marlys Borchert won the State Indoor, competing against Redwood Falls. Marlys was one of the top women shooters in the state at that time. In the early years, Little Crow Archers had an outdoor range at Robbins Island in Willmar. After a few years it was moved to the north side of Solomon Lake, near the Guri Endresen homestead, where many 3-D and other outdoor shoots were held through the years. Dalen’s first archery tournament was shot up near Glenwood, MN. Where he and Stan Meyer shot with Bob Rohde and Bob Sieve, who were two of the top archers in the state at that time. Back in the eighties, Dalen and several friends started hunting mule deer in Colorado. Slim Wickwerth, Dr. Jerry Kremer, and Stan Folkersted spent 35yrs, hunting the cliffs near Rifle, Colorado. Many whitetails and mule deer, foxes, a badger and numerous small game animals alike have fallen to the prowess of Dalen’s arrows. Over the years, Dalen has shot many local, regional and state indoor and outdoor tournaments, taking home many trophies. In 2003 Dalen was inducted as one of the first members of the Little Crow Archers Hall of Fame.
