shooters since you are our future. I sure hope to see you all out there this summer at shoots. Sure was nice to see a lot of familiar faces at Duluth for the indoor. Great times. Till I see you again, get out there and shoot some arrows.

Bull Moose Story: (front cover)
A Yukon moose adventure on the Beaver River. I was happily stranded for an extra week due to severe winter weather. One of my collateral duties in the Armed Forces was to teach cold weather medicine and survival. We lived in snow caves teaching how to rescue combat injured troops and get them out of the mountains. Floating a river archery hunting moose in the snow was a great adventure. –

MSAA
OUTDOOR VICE PRESIDENT - TODD NELSON
Spring is FINALLY here, which means that we can start shooting at our favorite place, outside! The MSAA will be having four state tournaments this summer. The first two will be hosted again by T.H.E. Great River Archery Club from St Cloud area at the Mississippi county park south of Rice MN. The 900 target tournament will be Saturday June 10th and the 50 meter tournament will be Sunday June 11th. Both tournaments where held here in 2022 and the venue proved to be a great place for this outstanding club to host them.
The next tournament will be the state field July 8-9 at the Rapids Archery in Coon Rapids MN. This tournament will be a joint endeavor with the MAA which means that you can shoot two different state tournaments at the same time. For both MSAA and MAA you only have to shoot one day to complete the tournament, however you may shoot both days and use the best score. Rapids Archery club will be using 3 different beautifully maintained 14 target ranges for this shoot, one range will be Field targets, one will be Hunter targets and the third will be Animal targets.
The last tournament of the summer will be the State 3D hosted by the Duluth Archery Club August 5-6 at their awesome range north of Duluth. Once again this is a two day tournament but you only have to shoot one day or the other. A second class can be shot, but only your first score counts in each class.
Remember to bring your hunting buddies with and introduce them to target archery, they can shoot in the new Modern Bowhunter class ,which means that they probably won’t have to change anything on their equipment to shoot against people with the same type of equipment.
Enjoy Minnesota’s great outdoors!
INDOOR VICE PRESIDENT - PAUL PARSONS
Duluth Archery Club did a grand slam job at hosting Indoor this year in Carlton. Great food, vendors, and most of all it was so great to see a lot of you there. I am pretty sure Duluth Archery Club would like to host again. Stay tuned for 2024 location. Let’s get outside and attend some shoots. Thanks everyone for a great indoor season. Well appreciated.
BOARD UPDATES...
RECORDS KEEPER - JAN EKERT
The Indoor is complete and I have finally tallied all of the records. There were 15 new records shot at the Indoor, it is a lot of fun to recognize new names as well as see many names from years gone by. That tells me is that we are still the number one organization that Archers look to for events that are fun to attend and that gives them an opportunity to compete against others of the same caliber.
The one thing I have noted in looking at scorecards is some shooters continue to be confused over the class they shoot or are not aware of the acronyms that are to be used. I know that these are sent to the Clubs that are hosting the event, but I am asking you as shooters to check your cards for the correct acronym. If you are not sure ask someone for help in choosing the correct class. Another reminder that if you are shooting towards the Grand Champion, you must shoot the same class at each event and your age category/class is your age as of January 1. A suggestion I will make that when a club is hosting an event that the MSAA can provide the host Club with a list that can be posted to try and lessen any confusion.
I will do my best to try and Keep things current and get your award certificates to you at the shoots this summer. Make sure that you check with me or at the MSAA table to pick them up. I still have many award certificates that I brought to the indoor that were not picked up.
Shoot Good and look forward to seeing many of you at the outdoor events.

The Duluth Archery Club did a great job on the Indoor Championship and raised significant funds for their club. It ran very smoothly thanks to their hard work.
A special shout-out to Leann Boes as she did a great job on the Indoor financial report and balanced the books to the penny! Thanks Leann it was a pleasure working with you!!!!

IT’S ABOUT SHOT PLACEMENT
By Don Primley
Bull Elk Story:
I have archery hunted elk in Montana,Idaho,Colorado and New Mexico. This bull was taken in northern New Mexico. I was hunting with the best archery elk hunter I have ever hunted with Joe Giglia creator and founder of the ELK BROS BLU COLLAR ELK HUNTING PODCAST. He has harvested over 40 bull elk with his bow and he can speak the language.!! He is a friend and a mentor. A true coach!!
Minnesota Arrow May 2023
I have started dozens of facial gun shot wound lectures with that question comparing high velocity vs low velocity weapons. I have also started hunter safety archery presentations with a 30-30 lever action rifle and a Hoyt compound bow asking the attendees which was more deadly. Invariably the answer was high velocity and the 30-30 rifle respectively. Setting up the answer: WRONG!
They are all just as deadly as the other. IT IS SHOT PLACEMENT!! Yes, the high velocity round will cause more hydrostatic shock and cavitation damage. Hydrostatic shock is the concept that a penetrating projectile (ie. bullet) can produce a pressure wave that causes remote damage to tissue and organs. Even an arrow causes shock pressure when an arrow’s kinetic energy is converted into a lethal fluid pressure wave inside an animal. According to the FBI, you would be much more likely to die after being hit by a broadhead-tipped arrow than from a single pistol bullet. SAFETY FIRST!!
I have treated multiple gun shot wounded humans and not all of them survive, however most of them did. On the other hand I have shot multiple bull moose, bull elk, bears, caribou, mule deer, whitetails, hogs, turkeys and a mountain lion with one broadhead-tipped arrow. IT IS SHOT PLACEMENT!!
With an arrow placed in the vitals, shock and organ failure are the causes of rapid death. If a broadhead-tipped arrow disrupts the respiratory or circulatory systems with either direct penetration of the heart, both lungs, or a combination, it will cause rapid death. An errant or poorly executed shot severing major vessels such as the carotid or femoral vascular bundles will disrupt the circulatory system and lead to a greater tracking effort but likely death of the targeted animal. However, when only one lung is deflated the respiratory system is affected, but the animal will most likely survive. If one lung and the liver have been penetrated by a broadheadtipped arrow, it will likely cause death at a much slower time table. As we all know, a much longer time is required to allow the animal to die and therefore a delay in tracking on set.
Blood loss leads to hemorrhagic shock and the animal needs to lose enough blood either inside the body or outside of the body, leading to organ failure. Organ failure and death can be very quick or it may take hours, depending on shot placement.
That is why as hunters we practice. We owe it to our intended quarry to practice all year long, not just the two weeks before the season opener. TWO HOLES is the goal through both lungs to disrupt the respiratory system. Loss of
blood and therefore oxygen to the brain or bilateral collapsed lungs is organ failure and will usually result in seeing the targeted animal falling in sight.
Not all archers are hunters and I love that about our sport. Dedication to shot placement is just as important to target archers as it is to those of you who do hunt. It’s not just the bullseye it is the X !!. Just as the hunter shoots to the exit to achieve the two holes through the vitals, it is the X count for the target archer.
The common denominator is dedicated practice. Join an archery club, join a league for winter shooting, support your local archery pro shops for shooting instruction to improve your abilities. If you think that you don’t need to practice think again. The more Xs you shoot the more fun you will have and the more meat you will put in the freezer.
Mountain Lion Story:
Hound hunting in Nevada, we hunted this particular lion for several days until we cut a fresh track and then the six mile pursuit began through the Nevada mountains. Prehunt practice for weeks included pulling a target up 20 feet into a tree and shooting at an orange target spot from various distances and positions. the meat was excellent to eat. I don’t shoot anything I don’t eat.

Don Primley
Don Primley Bio:
Born in GreenBay Wisconsin and raised in Hayward WI.
I began my hunting adventures at the age of 3 y/o while “archery road hunting” in northern Wisconsin. My grandfather relates the story that I howled that the deer were going to eat my daddy. I was very fortunate to have archery hunted with both my grandparents and my mother and father. At the age of 12 my grandmother, who was hunting the same field, told me that I would never shoot a deer the way I was slapping mosquitoes.
The years and adventures piled up. It has always been about the adventures for me. Experience has been a great teacher and I have learned that my windmill of opportunity spinsfaster when I am in the game. Practice, scouting, field work, climbing mountains, observing and listening to the animals in the off season that I will pursue in season. Having great mentors to learn from and then pass on the knowledge. THAT IS OUR LEGACY !!

Crock Pot Breasts
During the Whitetail or Elk rut I will frequently spend all day from well before days first light until dark in a stand or climbing mountains. I have harvested more bull elk between the hours of 10am and 2pm than any other time of the day. So it is nice to have something cooking while I was out hunting. One of my go to dinners is very simple as long as you have electricity.
Equipment
• Large Crockpot
Ingredients
• Whole, frozen breasts of either or some of each of the following: ruffed grouse, sharptail grouse, pheasant, spruce hen, blue grouse
• Pour cans of Campbells cream soups (undiluted) over the breasts. I mix cream of celery, cream of mushroom, cream of bacon, cream of golden mushroom, broccoli cheddar, cheddar cheese, or cream of chicken. (Mix and match the soups you choose.)
• Serve over noodles or rice
• salt & pepper to taste
Cook on low all day. The frozen breasts will create the water. Red or White wine pairs nicely.

Practice Better Practice
BY ADAM KRAMER, T.H.E. GREAT RIVER ARCHERY CLUB
As archers we typically rely on the idea that by spending more time shooting our bows, more success will most likely be achieved. Our sport has associated hours at the archery range with shooting better, and if we spend every evening sending arrows down range, that tournaments will be more likely to work in our favor. This has personally been my roadmap to success but have now realized recently that conventional practice sessions have been working against me. By taking a new approach to an old ideology you can get more out of each rep, and even gain confidence when range time is limited or not available.
Effective practice sessions begin before they start. Prior to beginning get in the right mindset. Have a set number of arrows in which to shoot, and something to specifically work on during that session. These goals will differ depending on the level of shooter. A novice may try to focus on anchor point acquisition, as compared to a more experienced archer who may try to work on release execution or cadence. The idea behind these goals is to be more efficient with precious time. Do not rely on blindly falling into better archery at some point. Work with fervor towards becoming a more capable archer by setting forth a “practice outline”. This should become cumulative as time goes on. Review what was worked on in prior
sessions so those things are remembered and continuously incorporated into the evolving process. By setting a limited amount of shots prior to every session, each repetition will be better utilized since our focus will be more concentrated on the progress of obtaining the previously set goal. If we simply go into autopilot mode and send a dozen arrows downrange every end we can easily fall into practicing our own failure. Develop a more determined, organized, and concise mindset when practicing and you shall become a catalyst for improvement.
Time spent shooting is definitely well appreciated, but time without a bow in our hands can be equally valuable. Most of us wish we could shoot everyday but that simply is not feasible. Modern life has a knack for making this happen. Envisionment is a powerful drill that is easily accessible and can have a profound impact. The next time you are driving to work or lying in bed at night go through the perfect shot. Imagine being on the course of the next tournament, approaching the next station or stepping onto the line waiting for the whistle to signal the commencement of shooting. Talk yourself through every part of the round. Place your feet, load the bow, set the grip, draw, and then say your individual shot mantra. Pin to the middle right away, begin rolling the release, strong pressure forward
Minnesota Arrow May 2023
and back, relaxed bow hand until after the shot, roll the release, roll, roll, roll....Envision the shot breaking and the arrow going extra middle. Imagine what the proper follow through would like. This builds confidence prior to a competition, calms an anxious mind, increases mental awareness during the shot, and reinforces the recipe for a great shot. Envisionment is easy to access and can be easily implemented anywhere at any time where physical practice cannot always be opportune.
In sports, an afterschool practice would consist of drills/ exercises and scrimmages to prepare for an upcoming event. An archer can use a similar model for their own betterment. Leagues are like a scrimmage where an archer can put their shot process into effect while scoring and shooting amongst others. Leagues can help solidify your mental game because it allows for external stress (scoring, people watching you shoot, unfamiliar range) to be brought up against your mental toughness. Shoot a league with the single goal of wanting to make each shot with perfect form and process. Disregard the scores and this will encourage more focus on improving your shot, which will in turn boost scores. Use the same result-yielding method that you have created in league to help achieve success during the tournament and hunting season.
Archery is a sport where practice can be enjoyed just as much as competing. It can be used as therapy, a social event, or a way to keep active. But each of these sessions
should be utilized as an opportunity for improvement by being focused and determined. If range time is simply not available then use envisionment to continue building confidence and solidifying your shot process. Participate in mock head to head shoot offs with other archers, and learn to perform under pressure. Soon you will find yourself in critical moments with a higher level of competence and experiencing greater results.
Keep
punching clocks and busting nocks, Adam
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
I live in Rice, MN with my wife Alexandra (married 2020) on a small farm. I grew up in Wisconsin where I found competitive archery at a young age. 4H and NFAA were my main sanctions of participation. After graduating from UW-River Falls with a meat animal science degree, I moved to the greater St. Cloud area. Since then I have begun to experience the great MN archery community and hope to contribute to its enrichment through writing and volunteering at my local club ( T.H.E Great River Archery Club). Currently, I work at Archery Country in Waite Park, and breed cows for Select Sires in central MN. My hobbies include enjoying archery with friends and family, hiking, snowshoeing, camping, raising livestock, reading, and watching MASH. Archery is life and life is good!

Harold was one of the nine founding members of the Saratoga Archery club over 60 years ago. Each of those founders invested $900 of their hard earned money, which was a lot back then. Harold was a very active member his entire life, even after he could no longer shoot he spent much of his retirement maintaining the range. There would be no Saratoga Archery club today without the passion and dedication of Harold.

Bob was one of the founders of the Saratoga Archery Club over 60 years ago, and has probably shot more arrows and done more work at the club than anybody. Before ATV’s, Bob would use his VW pickup to haul targets, lumber, posts and 3D targets around the range.
Even though Bob hasn’t been able to shoot for a few years, he still came to every meeting, and most of our shoots just to see the archers and tell some of his LEGENDARY stories.
The archery community has lost a very special friend, and the Saratoga Archery Club is extremely grateful to Bob for all that he did for the club.

- Todd suggests adding website URL and Facebook page to the scorecards that the shooters keep
- Paul discussed creating educational videos describing each class and different types of shoots. -
