Our annual Mini World Cup is now in its 30th year and each year the event continues to grow. Our Club has been committed to encouraging the growth of soccer within our community for over 41 years. The Club fields 67 schoolboy/girl soccer teams Merrion Youths Football Club is a community based club which provides young people with the opportunity to participate in structured football in the local area. The Club encourages its players to play at the highest level possible recognising their skills and abilities. Our aim is to provide a facility where players from the age of five, can develop their skills and reach their full potential in a safe and professional environment The establishment of our partnership with UCD AFC has opened up huge opportunities for all of our members as we continue to move forward. Another Successful Season – Willie Boland would like to welcome everyone involved to the 2022 Mount Merrion Mini World Cup.Let me take you through a review of what’s been happening this season at Mount Merrion:
I
53 boys teams and 13 girls teams. We have over 900 players within the club along with 150 participants in our academies. Supporting this there are close to 200 volunteers helping out with the various teams in a number of ways. Growing Girls Participation The number of girl players and teams at Mount Merrion has grown. Girls teams are now at 13, with many more girls attending our academy. We as a club are currently looking to bring a suitable candidate in to take on the girls’ development role within the club.
Academies We have had over 100 boys and girls attend our academies throughout the season.
We also introduced an u7 team into the DDSL for the latter part of the season.
The Saturday afternoon academy ran for three different periods throughout the season.
Little Kickers We introduced a Merrion Kickers this year for 3-4 year olds. It runs alongside our Saturday morning academy. This will provide a pathway for 2-4 year olds into the academy and progression to Mount Merrion teams.
Over 50 boys and over 40 girls were present. This will prepare our boys and girls for new teams in September.
Teams We now have 66 teams taking to the field each week representing Mount Merrion,
We have had a Saturday morning academy for u6 and u7 boys to prepare them for Saturday football.
Schools Programme I am currently taking football sessions in 5 schools in the area. I have been welcomed into Oatlands, Nord Anglia, Our Lady’s Grove, St Mary’s Booterstown and SST Mount Merrion. It’s been great getting out and building relationships with these schools and making more people aware of MMYFC. Schools Cup We have introduced a Schools Cup to be held in Deerpark every May. A stand alone boys cup along with a girls cup will be held to bring the local schools together. Transition Year Programme We are looking to introduce a Transition Year programme to commence in September
U19 LSL team who completed a League and Cup double. 2022 for 4th year students who play for Mount Merrion. Within this programme players will be up-skilled on first aid, referee course, PDP 1 and 2. It will also be an opportunity to partake in extra training in UCD. Goalkeeper Sessions Peter Quinlan has been taking goalkeeper sessions throughout the season, this caters for most ages within the club. Peter has also successfully been running the academies on Saturdays and
has been a great addition to the club. I would like to finish off by thanking all our players, managers, coaches and volunteers for their hard work, dedication, commitment, attitude and enthusiasm throughout the season. I would also like to thank the parents for the commitment they have shown getting their boys and girls to games as well as their good behaviour on the sidelines supporting their children.
Great praise must also go to the MMYFC Executive and Football Committee for their continued support and the unseen work they put in behind the scenes to continue to improve the club. Finally I would like to wish every player the best of luck during the Mini World Cup, it’s a great end of season tournament for all players and I hope everyone involved has an enjoyable experience. U10 girls team Our U 16s after a 3:2 win in extra time vs clonee in cup quarter final earlier this year.
MMYFC/UCD Under 15 League of Ireland he UCD/MMYFC U15 side have continued their superb start to their U15 National League campaign, winning four of their first five league games. Heading into a break, Shane Fox's side concluded the first part of their season with an impressive 2-1 win away to Bray Wanderers in Enniskerry. Goals from Cillian Petcher and Cian Nolan helped the UCD/MMYFC U15s to their win. That was after a brilliant start to the year, which saw the Sky Blues record wins against Shamrock Rovers, Carlow-Kilkenny and Drogheda United. Of those wins, a 3-0 win away to

Rovers was the highlight, with Cillian Petcher, Adam Farrell and Cian Nolan all netting. The U15s also enjoyed a very enjoyable visit to Sunderland, where they trained and played against Sunderland's
academy team at their age group. Also taking in a visit to South Shields FC, the 15s then returned to league action on that Sunday evening, just hours after returning home.

Remember that although children play organised soccer they are not miniature professionals. Don’t place excessive pressure on children to perform to unrealistically high expectations. Children play soccer to develop their skills, to have fun and enjoy the game. Be on your best behaviour and lead by example. The behaviour of a team’s supporters will often be remembered long after the result of the game. Be remembered for the right reasons. Applaud good play, sportsmanship and best effort by the visiting team as well as your own. Welcome and respect all your teams opponents. Without them there would be no match.
Code of Conduct for Spectators
Condemn the use of violence in all forms at every opportunity. Verbal abuse of players, match officials or opposing supporters cannot be accepted in any shape or form. Players or match officials should never be regarded as fair targets for ignorant or abusive behaviour.
Bench dedicated to Brendan Healy On Sunday 6th March 2022 we were delighted to unveil a commemorative bench in Deerpark for Brendan Healy. Brendan was a life-long member of Mount Merrion Youths FC for over 40 years. He served the club as kitman, linesman, coach, manager and secretary of the club plus many other roles. Over his 40 years he coached 1000’s of kids at all levels in the Mount Merrion & Kilmacud area. We are delighted as a club to repay a small fraction of the time Brendan donated to our club by sponsoring the commemorative bench. We were joined on the day by Bredan’s family, his wife Doris, daughter Andrea and sons, Brendan, David, Bobby, Philip and Stephen to cut the ribbon. We were also joined by many former players and committee members. We would also like to thank Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council for their support.

THE CLUB PHILOSOPHY The club objective is to play football at the highest level possible, across every age group & across every league entered in to. The club will achieve this by utilising a style of football that is attacking & skilful in its nature. The club will continually endeavour to facilitate matching player’s talent with the appropriate level of challenge & participation. A player centred approach will be employed by all coaches & managers. There will be a focus on performance & development rather than results. Players will be encouraged to make their own footballing decisions in an effort to increase learning. The club also recognises that fun & social inclusion is important for all teams regardless of league or ability.
LONG TERM PLAYER DEVELOPMENT PATHWAY Active Start Stage – Ages: 2, 3 & 4 Soccer contributes to the well-being of children by engaging them in the sport, while teaching them basic movement skills. At this introductory level, the objective is to get moving, keep active & have fun, in a safe, low pressure, positive learning environment.
Fundamentals Stage – Ages: 5, 6, 7 & 8 At this stage, individual player development is paramount. Players at this stage are totally self-centred & the primary focus should be on individual, technical ball mastery. Coaches should create a stimulating learning environment where the atmosphere is one of freedom and fun.” A “positive coaching” philosophy is vital at this stage.
Learning to train stage – Ages: 9, 10 & 11 The effect of the role-model is very important at this stage. Children begin to identify with famous players and successful teams, and they want to learn imaginative skills. Skill demonstration is very important, and the players learn best by “doing.”
Training to train stage – Ages: 12 & 13 Awareness of tactics within the game becomes an important facet of the learning process. Players tend to be self-critical and begin to question more, but they are also beginning to form a strong commitment to the team.
Training to compete stage – Ages: 14 & 15 Athletes who are now proficient at performing basic and soccer-specific skills are working to gain more game maturity as they learn to perform these skills under a variety of competitive conditions. Players must have a sound understanding of the game principles and concepts.
Training to win stage – Ages: 16+ The majority of the player’s social, physical, technical, tactical, and psychological qualities are now fully established, and the focus of training has shifted to optimisation of performance. The focus at this stage is on the maximisation of all capacities, in an effort to produce good people as well as good footballers.
Active for life: Retention & Recruitment stage – Ages: All The recruitment and retention of players, coaches, referees and administrators is key to the ongoing development & long term future of Mount Merrion Youth F. C.
