SFAI U14 Cup Winners SFAI U14 Cup Winners
Our U14s made history this season, becoming the first team in the club to win the Subway SFAI National Cup. The run to the final included wins over teams from Dublin, Cork, Mayo, and Limerick, culminating in a 4-0 win over St Kevins FC in the final. The run started with an away trip to Baldoyle, which the boys came from 1-0 down to win 4-1, thanks to a hat trick from Ben Woods. St Mochtas were next, and the boys put on an excellent display in Colaiste Eoin, with goals from Cillian Murphy, Darragh Bailey and Tymon Gora. An early morning away trip to Esker Celtic awaited the boys in Round 3. In a tight game in Ballyowen, goals from Matthias Ruiz and Tom Murphy helped progress us to the final regional round, where a tricky Finglas side awaited. Despite going 1-0 down early, goals from Bobby Callanan, Peter Murray and Darragh Bailey put the boys in the hat for the Round of 32 and the first national round.
Blarney United were drawn to make the long trip north to Marley Park. A Julian Browne hat-trick, with the help of goals from Ben Woods, Darragh Bailey and Tymon Gora saw us through to the last 16. Special thanks to the parents for who provided food and drinks for all visiting teams over the course of the year. The boys watched the draw desperate for an away trip, and that they got with a trip west to play Castlebar Celtic.
The boys went 2-0 up early but were pegged back to 2-2. A MOTM performance from Matthew Reyes with 2 goals from midfield, including the winner to make it 3-2, meant a loud bus journey home and a place in the quarter finals. The boys congregated around a phone watching the draw live the following Wednesday in Benildus to find out their fate and were allotted a home draw against Aisling Annacotty of Limerick. Despite an even start, a strong second half performance meant progression to the semi-finals, for only the second time in the club’s history. Special mention to U13 player James O’Brien, who started the game at left back and was exceptional. Credit must also go to subs on the day, Patrick Tierney, Matthew Davy and Ben Woods who contributed hugely in turning the tide in our favour.
U14 UCD/MMYFC Division 1 team beat St. Kevins 4-0 in the final to win the SFAI National Cup.
Lakewood FC of Cork, who were unbeaten locally and nationally this season, made the trip to Colaiste Eoin for the club’s first ever home National Cup semi-final. A huge crowd turned up to support the boys, with players ranging from our academy, SSG teams, underage DDSL/LOI and Senior set ups cheering on their clubmates. Julian Browne got us off to the dream start, with a goal inside 22 seconds. Jamie Blake was excellent on the left and won a free kick which Tom Murphy converted. Lakewood pulled one back, but a Cillian Murphy header put us back in control before half time. The boys managed the game exceptionally in testing conditions, and a late Tom Murphy penalty secured a 4-1 win and a spot in the final.
May 12th, 2024 will go down as a memorable one for the club. The boys walked out to a huge crowd in Wayside Celtic and sang Amhran na bhFiann before kicking off against a well organised St. Kevins side, a team sitting top of DDSL Premier. However, the boys were not phased. Strong performances from Luke McNiff and the rest of our back 4 kept the Kevins front 4 quiet for most of the game and gave us the platform to go and attack. A first-half Julian Browne brace put us in dreamland going into half time. With a dogged and determined second half, the boys ran out 4-0 winners, delighting the hundreds of supporters there to watch. A further 2 U13s made their presence felt in the game, with Sam Cruz making a huge impact at right back when coming on for the excellent Matthias Ruiz, and goalkeeper Max Millar coming on for MOTM Adam “Kirkie” Kirkland, who’s shotstopping and distribution was outstanding all day. Well done to the players and coaching staff, pictured below.
They now contest the SFAI Subway Cup-Winners’ Cup final against Glentoran, and look to secure the league title with 2 wins from their last 3 to mark a memorable season.
Squad: Adam Kirkland, Max Millar, Luke McNiff, Sam Cruz, James O’Brien, Tom Murphy, Peter Murray, Matthias Ruiz, Matthew Reyes, Tymon Gora, Cillian Murphy, Jamie Blake, Patrick Tierney, Matthew Davy, Darragh Bailey, Bobby Callanan, Julian Browne, Ben Woods.

Another Successful Season –Willie Boland
Iwouldlike to welcome everyone involved in the 2024 Mount Merrion mini world cup. Here is a review of what's been happening this season at Mount Merrion.
Academies and Merrion Kickers
We have had increased numbers for our Saturday morning Academies in Colaiste Eoin which also includes Merrion kickers, which is for 3 to 4-year-olds to prepare them for the Academy. We also have an afternoon Academy up in Benildus. These Academies are also run by some of our young coaches to encourage them into the coaching and for them to also develop.
This is the first steppingstone for all involved to be introduced to 5-a-side football within the club at U8s.
Teams
We have 52 underage boys' teams that play across Saturday and Sunday ranging from U7 to U18. We also have 4 senior teams that compete in the Leinster Senior League. On the girls' side we have 17 teams that compete on Sundays.
Overall, we have 71 teams in the club with over 1,000 players along with close to 200 volunteers helping out with the clubs. We also have three LOI teams – An U13 Development squad to prepare the players for LOI football as well as an U14 and U15 LOI squad that represents UCD/MMYFC in the National League.
Transition Year Programme
I ran a Transition Year programme which offers players within the club as well as students from local colleges to have access to extra training down in UCD as well as acquiring their PDP1 qualification for coaching. They also had access to a referee's course to encourage younger referees into the game which is needed in our area.
Schools Programme
Each week I go into local schools to take some football sessions during and after school to promote the club. This year I have been in 6 different schools including Oatlands, Mount Anville, SST Mount Merrion, Our Lady’s Grove, St Raphaelas and Our Lady of Mercy, Booterstown.
Schools Cup
Both a Boys and Girls cup were held again this year
with participation from all the local schools coming together up in Deer Park.
Goalkeeper Sessions
Peter Quinlan once again took GK sessions every Thursday night and caters for all ages and levels.
Final Note
A final note to say thank you to all the players for their
commitment, effort and application each week at training and games – to the managers for their unbelievable commitment and enthusiasm to help improve our players – to coaches for supporting the managers and volunteering their free time every week –to committee members for their continued support in striving to improve the club
at every level and of course the parents for supporting and encouraging their children when representing the club. H
I hope everyone enjoys the experience of the Mini World Cup and once again thank you all for your efforts for this season.

Our U14 UCD/MM Academy team recieved an invite to the Prestigious Mechelen Rising Stars tournament on 11th-12th May in KV Mechelen training grounds in Belgium against some illustrious opposition including: West Ham, KV Mechelen, Feyenoord, Bodo Glimt (Norway), Stadbaek Espoo and eventual winners QPR.
The boys had an amazing tournament. In their first game they lost out narrowly to a late goal againist a very talented KV Mechelen team with the Mechelen keeper taking off some wonderful saves from Sean Kelly and JP Power to deny our boys a well deserved equaliser. Buoyed by a partisan home crowd KV Mechelen hung on for the win.
Next up was West Ham and another brilliant performance from the boys. A game of missed chances for the boys with JP Power coming close on a couple of occasions and Matthew Gormley also keeping the keeper busy but it was the Premiership’s team sharpness in front of goal which gave them a 2-0 victory.
Third game on a busy day was Norwegian giants Stadbaek. This was the game the boys had their shooting boots on with a well deserved 2-0 win with goals from Jack Brady and a brilliant move for the 2nd with Sean Kelly and Dylan Taylor combining brilliantly to provide Jack Corrigan a great ball which was expertly finished by the impressive midfielder.
The early start on the Sunday worked against the boys in their 4th game againist Espoo. A tired looking display in a 2-0 loss.
The last game against againist Norwegian king pins Bodo Glimt who had 4 Norwegian internationals proved to be a great game with the boys showing brilliant character with a 1-0 win thanks to a real poacher’s goal from Jack Brady, with the very impressive Conor Wheeler making a world class save to deny Bodo Glimt a draw in the last few minutes.
A truly brilliant weekend for all who attended with thanks to everyone in Mount Merrion and UCD. Special thanks to Barry Saul and Willie Boland for all their support for making the trip possible.

Our U15 UCD/MMYFC team began their season in early February with a 3-2 win over Bohemians and have amassed 20 from a possible 30 points, finishing 2nd in their group and qualifying for the Elite Stages, meaning they contest a 14 game league phase with the top teams in the country. The team travelled to Sunderland in early April to play 2 games, winning both

MOUNT MERRION F.C. Player Pathways
THE CLUB PHILOSOPHY
The club objective is to play football at the highest level possible, across every age group & across every league entered in to. The club will achieve this by utilising a style of football that is attacking & skilful in its nature. The club will continually endeavour to facilitate matching player’s talent with the appropriate level of challenge & participation.
A player centred approach will be employed by all coaches & managers. There will be a focus on performance & development rather than results. Players will be encouraged to make their own footballing decisions in an effort to increase learning. The club also recognises that fun & social inclusion is important for all teams regardless of league or ability.
LONG TERM PLAYER DEVELOPMENT PATHWAY
Active Start Stage – Ages: 2, 3 & 4
Soccer contributes to the well-being of children by engaging them in the sport, while teaching them basic movement skills. At this introductory level, the objective is to get moving, keep active & have fun, in a safe, low pressure, positive learning environment.
Fundamentals Stage –Ages: 5, 6, 7 & 8
At this stage, individual player development is paramount. Players at this stage are totally self-centred & the primary focus should be on individual, technical ball mastery. Coaches should create a stimulating learning environment where the atmosphere is one of freedom and fun.” A “positive coaching” philosophy is vital at this stage.
Learning to train stage –Ages: 9, 10 & 11
The effect of the role-model is very important at this stage. Children begin to identify with famous players and successful teams, and they want to learn imaginative skills. Skill demonstration is very important, and the players learn best by “doing.”
Training to train stage – Ages: 12 & 13
Awareness of tactics within the game becomes an important facet of the learning process. Players tend to be self-critical and begin to question more, but they are also beginning to form a strong commitment to the team.
Training to compete stage –Ages: 14 & 15
Athletes who are now proficient at performing basic and soccer-specific skills are working to gain more game maturity as they learn to perform these skills under a variety of competitive conditions. Players must have a sound understanding of the game principles and concepts.
Training
to win stage – Ages: 16+
The majority of the player’s social, physical, technical, tactical, and psychological qualities are now fully established, and the focus of training has shifted to optimisation of performance. The focus at this stage is on the maximisation of all capacities, in an effort to produce good people as well as good footballers.
Active
for life: Retention & Recruitment stage – Ages: All
The recruitment and retention of players, coaches, referees and administrators is key to the ongoing development & long term future of Mount Merrion Youth F. C.
