Having written several novels and a few movies, brothers and sisters often ask me, “How do I write a book? Where do I start?” It’s not easy to sit down and turn a blank page into a good story. It takes discipline, commitment and unfettered imagination. Let the story tell itself. Don’t force it, or try to write what you think people want to read. Be true to your voice and I guarantee the rest will follow. Everybody has a story in them, the question is….
The first thing you should do is create space in your life to write. This one element is often overlooked, but it is extremely essential to the writing process. Creating space means, setting aside a certain time frame and place that you can dedicate to your craft. Whether you decide to write first thing in the morning, late at night or on the train to work, keep that time consistent. If you’re in a cell or on a bunk, where physical space is limited, the way you setup to write is important to your subconscious. It communicates to your mental that we are about to engage our creative side. Once you set aside a certain space and time, I emphasize, STICK TO IT!! It doesn’t matter if you decide to write for an hour, six hours, or only twenty minutes, do not deviate from this. This is how you begin to write. Commit to the writing PROCESS. By the time we meet again, you should already have a time and designated space. Trust me, this space will be your temple when you need it most! Peace!!!!
