EDITOR’S LETTER – SUMMER 2025

SUMMER IS HERE,

and what beautiful, balmy weather we’ve been having! It brings me great pleasure to present to you Issue Three of MBCC ASPIRE Magazine—a vibrant, powerful edition that continues our mission of celebrating achievement, amplifying diverse voices, and addressing the issues that matter most to our communities.

We are absolutely delighted to feature Levi Roots on our cover. Known not only for his entrepreneurial spirit but also for his commitment to mentoring and uplifting others, Levi shares with us his inspiring journey to success and why giving back is so important.

Also in this issue, I’m excited to share my exclusive interview with Fredi Nwaka, the director and producer of Jafaican— the powerful new film that premiered in May 2025 and stars Peter Andre. Fredi speaks candidly about his journey as a writer and social entrepreneur, and how his life experiences have shaped his creative vision and mission to inspire change throughstorytelling.

We are proud to celebrate our sponsors—Amazon’s Black Employee Network (BEN) and the That’s BENtastic! Awards, which honour the excellence and achievements of their employees. Their support continues to uplift and empower our shared communities.

This issue consciously explores important social topics, including FGM, domestic abuse, reparations, maternity engagement, and HIV awareness. These conversations matter deeply, and we remain committed to giving them the platform they deserve.

At the heart of MBCC ASPIRE is our commitment to recognising and celebrating unsung heroes and sheroes—authors, activists, speakers, and everyday changemakers who lead with heart, courage, and vision.

We’re also proud to announce that MBCC ASPIRE is now a member of The British Society of Magazine Editors (BSME) and we have secured our official press credentials. This exciting development allows us to bring you even more dynamic stories and coverage from events across the country.

Thank you for reading, sharing, and growing with us. Here’s to a season filled with warmth, purpose, and continued inspiration.

With gratitude,

Marcia M Spence

TRINI FAMILY VALUES

A LEGACY OF SERVICE, CULTURE, AND EMPOWERMENT

ALLYSON INGRID WILLIAMS –A LIFE OF PURPOSE

Born in Trinidad and Tobago, Allyson Williams came to Britain during the Windrush era to train as a nurse and midwife. Despite facing racism, she built a 40-year NHS career, specialising in midwifery—a role she saw as a privilege and responsibility.

She championed home birth services and led projects that supported pregnancy as a normal life event, while also earning both her BA and MSc during her NHS tenure. Her leadership transformed maternity care across London.

In 2003, Allyson was awarded an MBE for her outstanding contribution to midwifery. Her work wasn’t just clinical—it was advocacy. She fought for compassionate care and empowered both midwives and mothers.

Outside of healthcare, Allyson co-founded Genesis Mas Band in 1980 with her husband, Vernon. Still active in Notting Hill Carnival, Genesis celebrates Caribbean identity and honours the legacy of enslaved ancestors.

In retirement, Allyson continues cultural and charitable work. Her memoir Tell Me Something I Don’t Know and recent Lifetime Achievement Awards from the University of Westminster and MBCC charity mark a life of impact and inspiration.

“Raising my children with strong Caribbean values was my mission— and my greatest success.”

SYMONE WILLIAMS –ART, RESILIENCE & CARNIVAL SPIRIT

Symone, born in 1976, is Allyson’s daughter and a powerful extension of her legacy. Raised on Trinidadian values, she thrived in sport, dance, and music—playing steel pan from the age of 10 and performing across Europe and the Caribbean.

A natural leader with creative flair, Symone became an internationally recognised costume designer, with work featured in Trinidad, Nigeria, the Seychelles, and beyond. Despite surviving a stroke and heart surgery, she remains deeply active. A passionate long-distance runner, she’s completed over 50 races and co-leads two running clubs with her partner Gerard, the Running Mayor of Kensington & Chelsea.

In 2023, she was honoured by Black Women Rising for her charitable and community work.

“I’m not confused—I’m a Trinidadian. I just happen to be born in London.”

Her resilience, artistry, and activism mirror the values her mother instilled: pride, perseverance, and purpose.

KEVIN LAYNE –CULTURE MEETS CINEMA

Kevin Layne, son of Allyson and Vernon, is a British actor whose work spans blockbuster films and TV—grounded in his Caribbean heritage.

Inspired by his father’s appearance in Live and Let Die, Kevin pursued acting, earning a Master’s from ArtsEd London. His credits include:

• Star Wars: The Last Jedi – Resistance Bomber Pilot

• Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom –Submarine Pilot

• 15 Minutes of War – Lead role as Barkhad

• Patrick Melrose, Guerrilla, Giri/Haji, and Netflix’s AKA (2023), which topped global charts

Off-screen, Kevin is involved in carnival arts, designing large-scale costumes for Genesis, continuing his family’s cultural tradition.

“My heritage fuels my craft. It’s who I am, on and off the screen.”

Kevin is a rising talent, honouring his family’s legacy through art, culture, and storytelling.

LIVING IT OUT LOUD

Marcia Williams, a vibrant and resilient woman from Aston, Birmingham, embodies joy and strength. As a proud mother of three, she has faced profound personal losses, including the death of her sons’ father, Mikey, and other loved ones. Yet, Marcia chose to live life boldly and unapologetically.

Raising her children alone, she embraced motherhood while maintaining her identity. On weekends, Marcia transforms into a woman of celebration, dancing to reggae, bashment, and garage music, dressed beautifully and radiating energy. Her love for life extends to her frequent travels—up to nine trips a year—bringing her infectious spirit wherever she goes.

Marcia’s strength shines in her memoir, Touch of Frost (TOF), which recounts her journey through an unexpected battle with cancer. What began as a sore throat after a trip to Jamaica evolved into a life-altering diagnosis. Through humour and honesty, she confronted the illness, refusing to let it overshadow her spirit. The memoir reflects her determination to live with joy and gratitude, offering inspiration to others.

Marcia remains deeply rooted in her Aston community, proud of her origins and the neighbourhood she calls home. Her story is not just about surviving but thriving—dancing through adversity with courage, laughter, and music.

More than a cancer survivor or a party enthusiast, Marcia Williams is an unsung hero who reminds us that life is a celebration to be lived fully, no matter the challenges.

BIRMINGHAM’S UNSUNG HERO: MARCIA WILLIAMS
“IF YOU CAN’T SEE IT, YOU CAN’T BE IT.”

Levi Roots’ Call-to-Action for the Next Generation

Seeing successful people who are like them helps young people set bigger goals, according to a Reggae Reggae Sauce entrepreneur.

“If you can’t see it, you can’t be it,” he declared, scanning a sea of Black and Brown faces. “Gatherings like this matter because they let our youth witness success that looks like them. They show it’s possible to remain true to who you are and still become the very best version of yourself.”

Roots speaks from lived experience. Growing up in 1970s Brixton, opportunity seldom knocked on his door. “There was no Peter Jones walking the streets, ready to make a life-changing phone call for a kid with a dream,” he recalled. Feeling he could “do something special” if only someone believed in him, the young Levi waited in vain for a mentor who never arrived. It was not until 2007,standing in the Dragons’ Den lift clutching a bottle of Reggae Reggae Sauce and his guitar, that the support he had long craved finally materialised.

Roots credits Peter Jones’ real contribution as guidance, not just the investment that made his condiment a supermarket staple. “Mentoring is absolutely amazing. Somebody who’s been there and done it said, ‘I believe in you, and I’ll make a few calls; but the rest is up to you.’ That changed everything.”

Roots shows that good mentorship helps young people develop their skills while staying true to themselves. He is convinced there are “many young Levi Roots” across the country, waiting for someone to open a door, make an introduction or simply voice belief in their potential.

LEVI ROOTS

AUTHENTICITY OVER ARCHETYPE

Roots rejects the idea that entrepreneurs must fit a pin-stripes-and-spreadsheet stereotype. “I’m no maths whizz,” he laughed, “but people invest in Levi Roots— the singer, the chef, the Jamaican Londoner—because I stay true to myself.” His advice to emerging creatives is uncompromising: do not dilute your culture or personality to meet external expectations; instead, polish what makes you unique until it shines.

That authenticity, he argues, is sustained by relentless work. “Stop working and things go south,” he said. Even now, running restaurants and product lines, he thrives on the energy of communities that still greet him as “Cousin Levi from South London.” Their support keeps him grounded—and motivated to “keep going forever.”

BECOMING “THE BEST OF YOU,”

Roots is acutely aware that self-belief can be fragile, particularly for young people from marginalised backgrounds. Many, he says, “undermine themselves because they don’t believe it’s possible to reach the next level.” His remedy combines visibility, events that showcase diverse success, with mentorship that teaches practical excellence: speaking with confidence, representing oneself professionally and, above all, striving to become “the best of you.”

A STORY RETOLD FOR A NEW GENERATION

Although Dragons’ Den aired 18 years ago, Roots refuses to let the narrative end there. His next project, a feature film about his life, aims to inspire a generation not yet born when he first serenaded investors with “Put some music in your food.” Scheduled to begin production soon, the film will revisit themes of perseverance, identity and the transformative power of one person’s belief in another.

Roots hopes the movie will ignite the same spark for today’s teenagers that Dragons’ Den lit for viewers in 2007. “We want young people to see that staying authentic and working hard can still carry you from Brixton to boardrooms and beyond.”

In a world where barriers too often mirror the streets that shaped him, Levi Roots stands as living proof that mentorship, authenticity, and sheer graft can melt the frost of circumstance. His rallying cry rings out: see it, believe it, become it. Then pass it on.

LIVING BEYOND SURVIVING: HOW JESTINA DUNCAN IS EMPOWERING WOMEN TO HEAL

By any measure, Jestina Duncan is a woman on a mission. A domestic abuse practitioner, consultant, podcast host, and award-winning community leader, Jestina has turned her personal pain into a powerful purpose. Helping other women not only survive abuse but rebuild their lives with confidence, dignity, and strength.

Based in Birmingham, Jestina is the founder of Living Beyond Surviving Consultancy, a domestic abuse support service offering tailored, trauma-informed care. Her work is rooted in lived experience. “As a survivor myself,” she says, “I know how hard it is to navigate life after abuse. My passion is to support, uplift, and empower women who have walked the same path.”

Originally launched in 2017 as Females of Empowerment, her organisation was rebranded in 2021 to reflect a deeper commitment: guiding women beyond survival into a place of wholeness. She helps professionals in the public and corporate sectors better support domestic abuse victims through workshops, individual sessions, and training.

Jestina holds a degree in Criminal Justice and Criminology and brings over a decade of frontline experience to her work. But her influence extends beyond the office or training room. In 2021, she launched the ‘Ladies Table Talk Podcast’, a platform where women share their stories, find community, and discover the power of being heard. “Storytelling is healing,” she explains. “It helps survivors realise they are not alone.”

In 2024, Jestina took her mission a step further by founding Queens Supporting Queens, a safe and nurturing support group specifically for Black women affected by domestic abuse. “Black women often face unique barriers, cultural, societal, and systemic, that can make recovery even harder,” she says. “As a Black woman, I understand those challenges and wanted to create a space where our voices, experiences, and heritage are acknowledged and honoured.”

PAMELA R. HAYNES

Pamela R. Haynes at TEDxBazeUniversity: Turning Storytelling into Social Impact

On June 13th, 2025, acclaimed author and criminal justice advocate Pamela R. Haynes delivered an inspiring TEDx talk at Baze University, Abuja, titled Write the Book. Chase the Dream. Change the World. Her message was both personal and universal: storytelling can drive social change—and every voice matters.

Pamela’s journey began in 2016. Originally planning to mark her milestone birthday with a master’s in criminal justice, she instead pivoted—balancing a demanding career and family life—toward a different goal: writing a novel. Influenced by authors such as Toni Morrison, she began crafting stories that reflected underrepresented identities and experiences.

A pivotal connection with publisher Marcia M Spence led to the publication of her debut novel, Loving the Brothers, in 2018. Despite a sudden loss of vision during the editing phase, Pamela pressed forward with the help of her team. The book struck a chord, particularly among survivors of domestic abuse, cementing her reputation as both an author and advocate.

Today, Pamela is a research fellow, award-winning speaker, and vocal champion for greater diversity in publishing—where only 5% of books are written by Black authors. At Baze University, she received an award from the First Class Speakers Academy for her global impact in storytelling and left attendees with a powerful call to action: “Somebody is waiting for you to write your story. Let today be the day you begin.”

MEET FREDI NWAKA

From Adversity to Creative Triumph

AN

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH THE FILMMAKER, MENTOR, AND STORYTELLER

The prestigious MBCC Awards on 30 November 2024 was a glittering evening, and amongst its many stars, one shone brightly in the VIP area Fredi Nwaka. Known for his multifaceted artistry and transformative journey, Fredi sat for an insightful interview that revealed his remarkable story.

The Man Behind the Vision

Fredi Nwaka, an award-winning writer, director, film producer, and actor, has a resume that reads like a testament to resilience and talent. From growing up in South London to creating two empowering award shows— The Power of a Man and The Power of a Woman—he has become an emblem of creative ambition. While the Power of a Woman Awards takes place in March, the Power of a Man Awards lights up November, both celebrating the strength and achievements of black men and women.

Originally from Brixton, Fredi’s story is deeply rooted in his complex upbringing. Fostered from the age of three months until 11 in a predominantly white town near Dover, he endured racial discrimination and abuse. Despite these hardships, his resilience carried him through. After leaving care at age 11, he returned to South London to live with his biological parents and found himself drawn into gang culture, losing 45 friends to violence in the process.

FROM MUSIC TO MOVIES

Fredi’s journey took him from gang life to becoming a sought-after bodyguard for celebrities, including Biggie Smalls, TLC, and Donell Jones. He also made history as the only British rapper signed by the Wu-Tang Clan’s label. Yet, his passions shifted over time, leading him toward filmmaking. He has directed and produced 11 movies, the most recent being Jafaican, an entertaining comedy adventure filmed in Jamaica and London, with Peter Andre, Oliver Samuels, Wil Johnson and Sizzla Kalonji. The film premiered at Odeon Cinemas in the UK and Australia, delighting audiences with its vibrant twists, cultural depth, and heartfelt humour. As one reviewer described, “Jafaican brings London to Yard… laughter, culture, and a whole heap of vibes.”

Fredi’s next upcoming film stars Cynthia Bailey in a distinguished Christmas production.

But the story doesn’t end there. Fredi is now working on an autobiography that promises to capture his extraordinary journey from adversity to triumph…

Fredi Nwaka’s narrative is an inspiring testament to the power of resilience, creativity, and community. From his early struggles to his current status as a creative powerhouse, Fredi continues to uplift and connect people through film, mentorship, and storytelling. His journey reminds us that even amidst life’s challenges, dreams can flourish, and visions can be realised.

Keep an eye out for his autobiography and his ongoing cinematic projects. Fredi Nwaka is a name that promises to resonate for years to come.

FREDI WILL HOST THE BOOK LAUNCH OF GO BACK AND GET IT, PENNED BY MARCIA M. SPENCE (MOI!), ON 10 AUGUST AT THE VILLAGE HOTEL AND SPA RESORT DUDLEY.

WHY I WROTE GO BACK AND GET IT!

I wrote Go Back and Get It because I needed to heal and I knew I wasn’t the only one. For years, I carried pain. I didn’t have time to process grief, illness, trauma, disappointment, and burnout. I had survived so much, but I hadn’t stopped long enough to acknowledge what it cost me.

Then, in a season of deep reflection, I heard a divine whisper through my journaling: “GO BACK AND GET IT.”

That’s when I found Sankofa, the West African principle that teaches us to go back and reclaim what we’ve forgotten, lost, or left behind.

This book is a personal journey of healing, spiritual growth, and self-discovery. It blends lived experience with self-help tools, spiritual insight, and emotional honesty.

I wrote this book for the one who feels tired, unseen, stuck, or ashamed. This is for the one who has been strong for everyone else, but feels broken inside.

Marcia M Publishing House was born during seasons of chronic illness. With no startup capital and only my faith and determination, I published my memoir — and opened the door for others. Ten years on, we’ve published over 300 titles and launched two magazines. Whatbeganassurvivalbecamelegacy.

CELEBRATING

FIVE YEARS OF IMPACT: THE ‘THAT’S BENTASTIC!’ AWARDS

Now a much-anticipated fixture in Amazon UK & Ireland’s events calendar, the That’s BENtastic! Awards have recognised over 2,000 employees for their outstanding contribution to the Black community.

Spearheaded by the operational arm of Amazon’s Black Employee Network (BEN), the campaign reflects the group’s powerful mission: to ensure its members feel Seen, Heard, and Valued.

Whether championing Black-owned businesses, mentoring future leaders, or volunteering with grassroots initiatives, the awards honour those creating real change - both within and beyond Amazon. Employees are nominated, with winners receiving up to £1,000 and an invitation to the BEN Summer Summit - an uplifting occasion that brings colleagues, families, and friends together in recognition of their efforts.

DESMOND MAXWELL ACQUAH Desmond took meaningful action to support vulnerable communities by initiating a partnership between Amazon’s Haydock sortation centre and the Manchester-based charity, Embassy Village. After visiting the organisation—which provides safe, private housing for people experiencing homelessness, including refugees—he identified ways the site could offer further support beyond a financial contribution. His proposal led to a £2,000 donation, but more importantly, it sparked an ongoing collaboration focused on helping Embassy Village residents access employment opportunities through Amazon.

On being recognised by the That’s BENtastic! Awards, Desmond reflects, “My philosophy is to treat others as you’d like to be treated. If something brings you joy, strive to bring the same to others. When people feel happy and at ease, they’re more likely to seek help and perform at their best. You never know who’s inspired by you, so keep smiling.

SILVAIN DJOMO Another inspiring BENtastic! Award recipient is Silvain, whose journey from asylum seeker to community leader exemplifies resilience, purpose, and service.

“As someone who was an asylum seeker, I’m grateful to be in a position to now be one of the people helping the Black community to grow”, he shares. “It is important to me that I make a positive impact with my community and empower the people around me. I am glad Amazon has given me the opportunity to share and celebrate my work through the That’s BENtastic! Awards, and I hope it inspires other people to do the same.”

Silvain was nominated for his outstanding work supporting refugees in Plymouth as they integrate into the local community. Outside of his role at Amazon, he organises a wide range of events designed to support, educate, and uplift Black residents—from swimming lessons and networking events to helping individuals apply for their provisional driving licences.

By the time Silvain was recognised with a 2023 BENtastic! Award, he had directly supported over 40 individuals—efforts that caught the attention of the local Mayor, who met with him to discuss how his work could be scaled across the city.

Below, we spotlight a few of the incredible individuals whose stories reflect the spirit and impact of the That’s BENtastic! Awards:

AS THE NETWORK PROUDLY CELEBRATES ITS FIFTH ANNIVERSARY, THESE AWARDS EXEMPLIFY HOW MEANINGFUL RECOGNITION, GENUINE ADVOCACY, AND STRONG COMMUNITY BONDS CAN DRIVE LASTING, POSITIVE CHANGE ACROSS AN ORGANISATION.

MEDHANE ZERIGABIR OGBAGEBRIEL

Also recognised with a BENtastic! Award in 2023 is Medhane, whose dedication to community building and inclusive support is both heartfelt and far-reaching.

“We’ve created a group to support families with children who have autism by organising monthly recreational activities and tours”, he explains. “By the time of the 2023 BENtastic! Awards, we had brought together around 16 families—supporting up to 20 children in total. Some families had one child with autism, others had two. While a few families were still unconnected, we were actively working to include them. The joy these children and their families experienced during our events was immeasurable, and we’re always open to feedback to help us grow and improve.”

Medhane’s impact extends well beyond these activities. Each week, he also supports fellow Amazonians by translating internal news and providing guidance on grammar and disciplinary writing—ensuring that communication is clear, inclusive, and empowering.

“Communication and the sharing of thoughts are invaluable” he says. “Amazon truly stands out for its openness to ideas and opportunities that benefit its people.”

He also expresses deep appreciation for the That’s BENtastic! programme itself: “Special thanks to the curators of the awards for their tireless efforts in making this programme a success. It connects participants with experts and professionals, fosters confidence, and helps people overcome challenges. This initiative creates better paths for growth and self-improvement—and I deeply respect its mission.”

Medhane closes with a message of gratitude and unity: “Above all, I want to thank everyone working so hard to make this initiative thrive. By listening respectfully and humbly, there’s nothing we can’t achieve. Let’s continue working together to bring joy and meaningful support to families in need”

JENNIFER OPOKU-MENSAH A 2024 BENtastic! Award winner, Jennifer exemplifies advocacy in action—using her voice and influence to open doors for others. This commitment to championing colleagues earned her the campaign’s highest number of nominations ever for a single leader.

“One of my proudest achievements since winning BENtastic! was supporting Kristos, an associate with remarkable skills in data analysis and automation,” she shares. “Recognising his potential, I introduced his work to our General Manager, John, who was impressed by the tools Kristos had developed to support inbound stow and receive operations.”

That simple act of recognition sparked a transformative journey. Leadership transitioned Kristos from Operations into the Reliability, Maintenance, and Engineering (RME) team in Dartford, where he continued to build innovative tools with significant impact. His growth in the role eventually led to his promotion to a Data Analyst position at Amazon’s London Headquarters.

“Witnessing Kristos’ journey has been deeply rewarding,” Jennifer reflects. “It’s a powerful reminder that advocating for others can lead to real, meaningful change.”

For Jennifer, supporting Kristos is just one example of a broader mission: to uplift, mentor, and create opportunities for those around her. “Helping others achieve their goals is a legacy I am proud to carry forward,” she adds. “It’s about more than recognition—it’s about building a community where everyone can thrive.”

“ Communication and the sharing of gifts are invaluable.”

As the inaugural recipient of the That’s BENtastic! Award, Byron Taylor has witnessed firsthand the programme’s transformative power—not just for ndividuals, but for entire communities.

“When I won the first award, I knew it would bring significant attention,” he recalls. “We didn’t underestimate the impact of the publicity and networking opportunities that followed. I hoped it would help us gain additional support to grow—and I’m proud to say that prediction has come true.

Since then, Settlement Support CIC has benefitted tremendously from the exposure the award brought. It elevated our organisation’s credibility, enabling us to build strategic partnerships and launch impactful community initiatives.

Our Donations Project began with pallets sourced from my site in Coventry, providing essential supplies to vulnerable migrants. This was followed by a Digital Inclusion Programme, highlighted by Coventry City Council, which supports individuals in gaining access to devices and basic digital skills. We also launched ESOL and Digital Skills Training to empower migrants from non-English-speaking backgrounds.

To promote health and physical activity among migrants, we introduced the Community Walks and Cycling Project. In partnership with the City Council’s Public Health Team, we also implemented the Health Alert for Migrants project, spreading vital health messages to migrant communities.

We held Sports for Social Integration events to bring communities together through physical activity. During Black History Month, we hosted the Minority Youth Expo in partnership with Coventry University, which was a tremendous success.

Our Skills Development Project continues to offer vocational and career-enhancing opportunities for community members. We are also collaborating with the West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner on the ‘My Community, Our Future’ project. As part of this, we worked with the BHX4 Black Employee Network to celebrate Africa Day.

The £1,000 prize that came with the That’s BENtastic! Award was invaluable during a pivotal time in our organisation’s growth. Alongside the initial £1,000 funding from the site, this support underscores the reality that Settlement Support CIC has grown with strong ties to Amazon. Beyond myself as the founder, the majority of our leadership, youth champions, and volunteers are current or former Amazonians.

Our key partners include Coventry City Council (Public Health Team and CovConnects Team), Coventry University, West Midlands Combined Authority, West Midlands Cycling and Walking, National Lottery Community Fund, Action Family Network, The Mason Foundation – The Community Mile, and Sustrans.

While we continue to seek support and partnerships to sustain our growth, Clearly, the That’s BENtastic! Awards—alongside Amazon’s inclusive culture— have played a pivotal role on the birth and development of Settlement Support CIC—and on the community it serves.”

“THE BENTASTIC AWARDS ELEVATED OUR ORGANISATION’S CREDIBILITY, WHICH WE HAVE USED POSITIVELY TO BUILD STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS AND LAUNCH IMPACTFUL COMMUNITY INITIATIVES.”

“The BENtastic Awards and Amazon’s DEI culture can be identified as making the greatest impact in the birth and growth of the SSCIC and how it is impacting the community.”

“The £1,000 prize proved invaluable during a pivotal time in the organisation’s growth.”

LIVING WITH... IF ONLY THEY KNEW! SHAMELESS –MY NAKED TRUTH

It was a regular June morning in 2016 when a private number lit up my phone. Something told me to answer and that one call changed my life.

Just two weeks earlier, I had taken a routine HIV test after removing my contraceptive implant. No symptoms. No worries. So, when the nurse said I needed to come in, HIV was the last thing on my mind.

I was engaged, a mum, and working in a salon. That day, everything stopped. My world blurred. I cried. I trembled. I questioned: How do I tell him? But my partner showed love, stood by me, and tested negative.

Still, the mental toll was huge. I battled shame, fear, and the daily weight of “looking okay” while feeling broken inside. My confidence disappeared. But faith held me.

Over time, I embraced my new reality. I’m now undetectable, meaning I cannot transmit the virus. I take daily medication, attend regular appointments, and advocate for change.

I co-host My Naked Truth Show and The HIV Positive Show – From Stigma to Strength to bring healing, awareness, and visibility to people living with HIV. Yes, I’m living with HIV-But I am not HIV. I am chosen. I am healed. I am whole.

To those who carry hidden struggles: you are not alone. This is our story.

Listen in, learn more, and be part of the healing.

BOOK REVIEW: A NEW WAY OF LIFE

BY

In A New Way of Life: Change Your Life by Changing the Life You Live, Dr Imhotep James invites readers on a transformative journey toward holistic health, self-discovery, and spiritual awareness. Blending ancient wisdom with modern-day insight, this compact yet powerful book speaks directly to anyone ready to reclaim their well-being through conscious living and the healing power of nature.

A seasoned social worker, youth leader, mediator, mentor, master herbalist, and community leader, Dr James draws from decades of hands-on experience and ancestral knowledge. He pays homage to his grandmother, a respected healer in her community, whose influence echoes throughout the book. His commitment to helping others shines through on every page, guiding readers toward a life centred around nutrition, herbs, positive mindset, and spiritual grounding.

One of the book’s key inspirations is Back to Eden by Jethro Kloss—a classic in natural health circles—and A New Way of Life builds on this legacy with accessible language and real-life relevance.

THE CHALLENGERS A JOURNEY OF INTENTIONAL GROWTH

The Challengers was founded by Shelly Allmark & Mustafa Rasheed during the COVID-19 lockdown, a time marked by personal and collective challenges. Seeking connection and comfort, Shelly began morning video calls with friends, incorporating journaling, affirmations, scripture, and prayer into a structured routine. This evolved into the 28 Morning Challenge, a practice that fostered reflection, self-awareness, and hope.

The growing community drew diverse participants, prompting Shelly to partner with Mustafa Rasheed, whose mindfulness expertise created spaces for men while she supported women. Together, they established The Challengers as a community rooted in intentional growth, gentle accountability, and meaningful self-care. Monthly themed challenges, guides, and routines were developed to help individuals build healthier habits through consistent, small steps.

Expanding their reach, The Challengers now offer workplace wellbeing workshops, focusing on mindfulness and stress reduction. This October, the official launch includes the 31 Night Challenge, an evening routine designed to help participants wind down, reset, and nurture themselves at the end of demanding days.

The Challengers invite people, whether new to self-care or seeking to reignite their journey, to join a supportive space that values kindness, reflection, and community over pressure or perfection. Led by Shelly and Mustafa, the initiative inspires intentional growth and meaningful change.
