ophia was ac cused of her crimes during the rei gn of George V, often known as the Edwardian era (named after the pre vious king, Ed ward VII). At this time, peop le were general ly healthier and better ed ucated than ever before, which meant a lower crime rate. Several societ ies campaigne d for women’s suffr age, the most famous being the Women’s Social and Po litical Union (WSPU), whose members often used extreme tactic s such as bre aking windows and other for ms of vandali sm. Around 1,000 suffrag ettes were jai led, and some went on hung er strike in pr ison as a further protes t. In 1918, all me n were allowed to vo te, along with women over 30 who owned the ir home or had a university educ ation.
