George Stephenson (9 June 1781 – 12 August 1848) was an English civil and mechanical engineer during the Industrial Revolution Renowned as the Father of Railways, Stephenson was considered by the Victorians as a great example of diligent application and having a thirst for improvement
His chosen rail gauge, sometimes called ‘Stephenson gauge’, was the basis for the 4-foot8+1⁄2- inch (1.435 m) the standard used by most of the world's railways Pioneered by Stephenson, rail transport was one of the most important technological inventions of the 19th century. Built by George and his son Robert, the Locomotion Number 1’ was the first steam locomotive to carry passengers on a public rail line, the Stockton & Darlington, in late September 1825.
George also built the first public inter-city railway line in the world to use locomotives - the Liverpool and Manchester Railway that opened in 1830.

100th Anniversary of the First Public Television Demonstration in 1926
John Logie Baird (13 August 1888 – 14 June 1946) was a Scottish inventor, electrical engineer, and innovator. In his London laboratory on 2 October 1925, Baird successfully transmitted the first television picture with a greyscale image: the head of a ventriloquist's dummy nicknamed ‘Stooky Bill’. Baird was so excited he went downstairs and fetched an office worker, 20-year-old William Edward Taynton, to see what a human face would look like, and Taynton became the first person to be televised! Baird who demonstrated the world's first mechanical television system to the public on 26 January 1926 at Selfridges Department Store in London He went on to invent the first publicly demonstrated colour television system and the first viable purely electronic Colour Television picture tube.
In 1928, the Baird Television Development Company achieved the first transatlantic television transmission. Baird's early technological successes and his role in the practical introduction of broadcast television for home entertainment have earned him a prominent place in television's history.

Erik Thorvaldsson (c. 950 – c. 1003), known as Erik the Red, was a Norse explorer described in medieval and Icelandic sage sources as having founded the first European settlement in Greenland. Erik most likely earned the epithet ’The Red’ due to the colour of his hair and beard According to the Icelandic Sagas, Erik was born in the Jaeren district of Rogaland in Norway, the son of Thorvald Asyadsson
Thorvald would later be banished from Norway and would sail west to Iceland with Erik and his family. During Erik's life in Iceland, he married Þjódhild Jorundsdottir and would have four children, with one of Erik's sons being the well-known Icelandic explorer Leif Erikson who discovered Vinland.
Around the year of 982, Erik was exiled from Iceland for three years, during which time he explored Greenland, eventually culminating in his founding of the first successful European settlement on the island Erik would later die there around 1003 CE during a winter epidemic
