THE BEST IN INDEPENDENT CHILDREN’S PUBLISHERS

Cover artwork used with the kind permission of The Secret Mountain

Many of us are highly aware of the significant shortage of inclusive children’s books on the market. The CLPE’s latest 2022 annual report on ethnic representation in children’s literature, Reflecting Realities, comments on the continued “small yet positive shifts” since their landmark 2017 survey, highlighting a rise from 4% to 20% in Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) protagonists in children’s books by 2021. Despite this continued encouraging rise, these figures are still woefully unrepresentative of the 2.5 million BAME schoolchildren in the UK that make up one-third of the national total.

For too long, books with diverse characters, writers and illustrators have come up against barriers in publishing. But the fact remains that these books remain sorely needed. BookTrust has been quick to recognise the benefits of ‘windows’ and ‘mirrors’ in books, where children can gain insights into different ways of life, whilst also finding reflections of themselves and their environments.

voices are key in maintaining cultural sensitivity and accuracy within stories and whilst themes of social justice are important, every child deserves to see themselves inhabiting spaces of adventure, comedy and fantasy too. For children who struggle to find representation in books, the risk is that they term benefits.

So we hope that this curated selection of MMS publisher titles will reflect their readers and contribute

Mali’s Magical Day is about finding the courage to step outside one’s comfort zone and shows how a child can find confidence through exploration and being independent, plus the strength to help others who lack confidence. While Mali is sight-impaired, this is not a story about disability but one that normalises disability in a fun story that all children will relate to.

Under The Red Shawl is a story about a journey, hope and creating fun with the little that you have. Starting out in a new place is tough, but friendship, kindness and imagination help Salim, Mama and Donkey discover their new world.

Monster, Jessica's dreams start to come true. She's pregnant! But Jessica has to adjust to being a disabled mum in an inaccessible world and face the critics who doubt her abilities. And when the pandemic hits just as they relocate to a new county, isolation takes on a new form, as they learn to adjust to being a family of three in one flat limited by government-enforced restrictions and fear of contracting Covid.
