DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION CATALOGUE

2022 THE BEST IN INDEPENDENT CHILDREN’S PUBLISHERS

Introduc)on Many of us are highly aware of the significant shortage of inclusive children’s books on the market. The CLPE’s latest 2021 report on ethnic representaDon in children’s literature, ReflecDng RealiDes, comments on the conDnued “small yet posiDve shiIs” since their landmark 2017 survey, highlighDng a rise from 4% to 15% in Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) protagonists in children’s books by 2020. Despite this encouraging rise, these figures are sDll woefully unrepresentaDve of the 2.5 million BAME schoolchildren in the UK that make up one-third of the naDonal total. For too long, books with diverse characters, writers and illustrators have come up against barriers in publishing. But the fact remains that these books remain sorely needed. BookTrust has been quick to recognise the benefits of ‘windows’ and ‘mirrors’ in books, where children can gain insights into different ways of life, whilst also finding reflecDons of themselves and their environments. Own-voices are key in maintaining cultural sensiDvity and accuracy within stories and whilst themes of social jusDce are important, every child deserves to see themselves inhabiDng spaces of adventure, comedy and fantasy too. For children who struggle to find representaDon in books, the risk is that they are less inclined to read for pleasure – a pracDce with proven long-term benefits. So we hope that this curated selecDon of Dtles will reflect their readers and contribute in a small way in finding a book every child can see themselves in. 2

Booky Girl

Lulu is one of the busiest and most positive little girls in picture books and her every adventure is prompted by a story. Then she’s off... to the library to research, to the dressing-up box to play, to read to her new baby brother, to plant flowers or to show her mother she’s responsible enough to look after a cat. Even though she’s excited she is well prepared for her first day at school. She tries new things with her cousin on her first sleepover...
