Night a`er night, his fans applauded and called out for more astonishing feats of magic. "Bravo!" they would shout, as Nivelli bowed low with a great flourish. But that was in a different, happier ]me, before the Jews of Europe were rounded up and sent to concentra]on camps. It is never easy reading a book about the Holocaust, especially one targeted specifically for young readers...The challenge for any writer telling children about this horrific ]me is balance... truth without all the terrifying details. Kathy Kacer rises to this challenge and knows how important it is that children learn about this tragic ]me in history. She manages the daun]ng task to not glorify, sensa]onalize or sugarcoat all the facts...Kacer proves that you can talk to young people about serious and sad issues...In fact, educators can use books like this as an entry point to discuss what life might have been like for young people at this ]me and use it as a opportunity and a vehicle to draw upon current events for other examples of situa]ons today that threaten the well-being of other ethnic groups. "Infused with hope and a message about human capacity for good in the face of evil."--Publishers Weekly
"The dark brooding illustra&ons aptly evoke the darkness and inhumanity of the seong. The only spots of colour are the red in the playing cards and the Nazi arm bands. This is an excellent tale to teach children about the horrors of the Holocaust.”

The night that Rachel and Toby's parents are taken away by the Nazis, they give their daughters three gold coins. "Use these wisely to help save your lives," they tell them. They also ask the girls to promise that they will always stay together. This compelling true story follows the girls as they confront the daily horrors of Auschwitz, protec]ng one another, sharing memories, fears and even laughter. Always together. But when Rachel becomes ill and is taken away by Nazi guards, likely forever, Toby risks her life to use the well-hidden gold coins to rescue her liJle sister. 4 “My children and I really liked this story of love between two sisters. The bravery Toby showed in searching for and rescuing Rachel is heartwarming. I am amazed that true stories are s>ll being told from World War II. The illustra>ons give you a feel for the atmosphere in the concentra>on camps; they are mostly gray, with only a touch of colour here and there”.

‘We all had gas masks.’ The war started in Europe in 1939. We were all given rubber gas masks in case poison gas was dropped from aeroplanes. Children’s gas masks were made in bright colours to make them less frightening.
Some of our neighbours built Anderson bomb shelters like this in their gardens, but we sheltered in Clapham Common underground station.
It was very dangerous living in London. Air-raid sirens made a terrible wailing noise when the enemy planes were coming to drop bombs. You had to find shelter quickly.
Small children were put in siren suits to keep them warm in the shelters. This is me wearing one.
