Three years ago I started out with a dream to create a vibrant new magazine for the county – one which combined fascinating articles on everything from local history, fashion, retail, food, drink and celebrity.

Today, mmm is one of the most popular magazines in the county. And as we start on this new year, it is one which gives me a great amount of pride.

It would not be possible, of course, without our loyal advertisers and you, the wonderful readers, so to everyone I would like to send a special message of good year cheer and my heartfelt thanks.

In the weeks leading up to our launch I remember meeting the boxer Michael Watson whose career was cut devastatingly short after a near fatal injury in a bout. He told me that if I tried hard and believed, I would succeed. That message of hope and ambition stayed with me.

Of course, this is the perfect time of year to consider new challenges both personally and professionally. Inside we have a look at how you can turn over a new leaf with your lifestyle and health.

My good friend Veronica started the year telling me how she was determined to lose weight. Every month we met I saw the pounds drop of her. Eventually, she had dropped from a size 24 to a size 14. Again, it just goes to show that with determination you can achieve your goals.

And while the weather remains cold, what better time than now to start looking towards a holiday? We have a special travel collection from Baldwins inside. Just remember to tell them where you saw them when you contact them to book your trip!

There's our regular dose of glamour too with special features on Simon Cowell – a well established dream-maker – and the wonderful, and very beautiful, Holly Willoughby. We're sure you'll enjoy them.

IS THIS TV’S MOST POPULAR PERSONALITY? here is, in television, a crop of presenters whom every producer and director wants fronting their show.

They are the ones with the common touch and the ability to win over the affection of the nation.

Spearheaded by Ant and Dec, there’s the likes of Dermot O’Leary, Davina McCall, and, of course, Holly Willoughby.

And for those who happened to be passing through the west Kent village of Chiddingstone back in the summer of 2012, they would have had the good fortune to see not only O’Leary tie the knot with his Kentish bride Dee Koppang, EXW :LOORXJKE\ ORRNLQJ VWXQQLQJ LQ D ¿JXUH hugging blue dress. Since then, Willoughby’s star continues to be in the ascendency.

Which is all the more remarkable as she’s only just given birth to her third child. She has an enviable happy home with husband and TV SURGXFHU 'DQ %DOGZLQ DQG D FHOHEULW\ SDFNHG social life where the likes of Fearne Cotton and All Saints star Nicola Appleton are close friends.

Yet the job offers show no sign of slowing, with her return to presenting roles on ITV’s This Morning and as a team captain on ITV2’s anarchic Celebrity Juice scheduled for later this year. She’s even penned a series of children’s books alongside her sister Kelly.

Holly Willoughby, it seems, is everywhere and her popularity showing no signs of being on the wane. She explains: “People think I work a lot more than I do. “I think because you’re in people’s living rooms every day they’re like: ‘Oh my God, you’re always on the telly,’ but it’s like, ‘Yeah but you always have to go to work every GD\ QLQH WLOO ÂżYH ZKHUHDV , ÂżQLVK DW 12.30pm and then I’m home’.â€?

Trying to secure that all important home and work balance is helped, in part at least, by her husband Dan working on Celebrity Juice and her desire to always ensure she’s there for the important parts of her children’s day. “I’m happy to work really hard during the day but once it gets to a certain time I’m off,� she explains. “I have to be at home. I have a nanny, but I always want to put the

kids to sleep and have that last hour with them. “Dan and I both have a similar outlook on our children and how we want their lives to be. Creating a home environment is really important and I try to make it as normal as possible. We all love being together and doing stuff at the weekend.

That’s our time. “I always knew I wanted a family. I couldn’t wait to have a baby and was really lucky to meet Dan when I did, so we could start early and enjoy it for longer.�

Today they have three children – Harry, born in 2009, Belle in 2011, and the latest addition to their family, Chester, in 2014.

The pair met as she made the transition from model – she appeared in a host of teenage magazines and went on to model underwear for the likes of Pretty Polly – to television star.

in S Club TV – a show on CITV featuring pop group S Club 7 – her big breakthrough came in 2004 and Ministry of Mayhem, under the guidance of none other than KXVEDQG WR EH 'DQ Appearing alongside Stephen Mulhern, the audience warmed to the pair so much, that within two years it had been renamed Holly and Stephen’s Saturday Showdown.

The pair not only clicked on screen, but off it too, becoming good friends. “Phil is one of my best friends,� she says.

“He is inspiring on so many levels. “Professionally he’s a master of TV but also, on a personal level, the way he is with his wife and daughters is so beautiful. “They’re really funny, polite girls.

I look at him and think, ‘Right, you’ve done all of that. I’d like to be like that too’.�

Born in 1981 in Brighton, she was the youngest of two daughters to a VDOHV PDQDJHU RI D GRXEOH JOD]LQJ company and an air stewardess.

After attending public school in Burgess Hill, West Sussex – where VKH KDG WR EDWWOH ZLWK G\VOH[LD VKH was spotted, at the age of 14 by a talent scout at The Clothes Show Live exhibition and signed up by a model agency.

She had visited the show in Birmingham as part of a school trip, part of her textiles course. It would change her life.

She remembers: “After watching the live catwalk shows and hankering after the latest fashions, I was D

wandering around the exhibit stands when a bloke came up to me and gave me a round badge with ‘Storm’ written on it and said, ‘If you take this badge over to the Storm hall, the lady photographer there will take a snap of you, and if you give her your details we’ll call and set up a formal appointment’. “Modelling had never crossed my mind before. In fact, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with my life at that age.

I wasn’t academic, just average at most things, like maths and languages.

All the more remarkable as she was once so shy.

“I suddenly had to talk,� she explains, “there was no one else to do it for me.�

But it brought her to the attention of TV bosses who put her on the road to small screen success.

It seems almost certain that 2015 will be another year in which we see plenty of Holly Willoughby. And few would argue against that being a good thing. mmm

Which

DIET?

With so many different diets on offer, how do you know which is the right one for you? mmm looks at the top diets on the market... here are many different types of diets, like the Atkins diet, the South Beach diet, the Rosemary Conley diet and many more. Most diets limit portions to a very small size or exclude certain foods entirely to promote weight loss

- something which may not be effective over the long term.

It is much easier to maintain a diet that takes into account the foods that you like and dislike and also include combinations of foods with enough calories and nutrients for good health.

When choosing a diet, ask yourself these questions: Is the diet that your considering nutritionally balanced? Will this diet be practical and easy to follow? Will the diet be maintainable for the rest of your life? ,WV HVVHQWLDO \RX SLFN D GLHW ZKLFK 多WV LQ with your lifestyle and health requirements.

ATKINS DIET he Atkins diet is a low-carb, high-protein weight loss programme. You start with a low-carb diet designed for rapid weight loss. This lasts at least two weeks depending on your weight loss goal. During this phase, you’re on a protein, fat and very lowcarb diet, including meat, seafood, eggs, cheese, some veg, butter and oils. In contrast to the Dukan diet, Atkins allows unlimited fat and some veg, such as peppers, cucumber and iceberg lettuce, during phase one. During the next three phases, the weight loss is likely to be

DUKAN DIET he Dukan diet is a lowcarbohydrate (carb), highprotein diet.

There’s no limit to how much you can eat during the plan’s four phases, providing you stick to the rules of the plan.

During phase one, you’re on a strict lean protein diet.

This is based on a list of 72 reasonably low-fat proteinrich foods, such as chicken, WXUNH\ HJJV ÂżVK DQG IDW IUHH dairy. This is for an average RI ÂżYH GD\V WR DFKLHYH TXLFN weight loss.

Carbs are off limits except for a small amount of oat bran. Unlike the Atkins diet, Dukan’s phase one bans vegetables and seriously restricts fat.

The next three phases of the plan see the gradual introduction of some fruit, veg and carbs and eventually all foods.

The aim is gradual weight loss of up to 2lb a week and to promote long-term weight management.

There’s no time limit to the ¿QDO SKDVH ZKLFK LQYROYHV having a protein-only day once a week and taking regular exercise.

You can follow her recipes or buy from her range of calorie-controlled ready meals and snacks. You’re encouraged to eat food with 5% RU OHVV IDW ZLWK WKH H[FHSWLRQ RI RLO\ ¿VK SRUULGJH RDWV and lean meat. A network of local Rosemary Conley clubs offer weekly exercise classes, support and motivation. You learn about calorie counting and portion size, which can help you sustain your weight loss beyond the programme. The diet is designed to help you lose a stone in seven weeks. How long you stay on the plan depends on your weight loss goal.

SLIM-FAST DIET he Slim-Fast diet is a low-calorie meal replacement plan for people with a BMI of 25 and over. It uses Slim-Fast’s range of products. The plan recommends three snacks a day from an extensive list, including crisps and chocolate, two meal replacement shakes or bars and one regular meal, taken from a

list of recipes on the Slim-Fast website. You can stay on the diet for as long as you want depending on your weight loss goal. Once reached, you’re advised to have one meal replacement shake a day, up to two low-fat snacks and two healthy meals. The plan is designed to help you lose about 1lb to 2lb a week and you can follow the diet for as long as you want.

CAMBRIDGE DIET he Cambridge weight plans are based around buying and eating a range of meal-replacement products with WKH SURPLVH RI UDSLG ZHLJKW ORVV 7KHUH DUH VL[ ÀH[LEOH diet plans ranging from 415kcal to 1,500kcal or more a day, depending on your weight loss goal. There is also a long-term weight management programme. The bars, soups, porridges and shakes can be used as your sole source of nutrition or together with low-calorie regular meals. While on the programme, you receive advice and support on healthy eating and exercise from a Cambridge adviser.

T 5:2 DIET VEGANUARY here are many different ways you can follow a vegan diet. If you remove PHDW DQG VLPSO\ ¿OO XS RQ UH¿QHG carbohydrates or substitute meat with processed soya or mock meats then you aren’t doing yourself any favours.

However, a vegan approach can be a great start to the year, if done right. Removing meat and focusing on following a high plant based diet packed with raw plant fats, plenty of green leafy vegetables and good quality protein from foods such as quinoa, spirulina, bean and SXOVHV ZRXOG EH H[WUHPHO\ EHQHÂżFLDO This type of diet would be highly alkalising and DQWL LQĂ&#x20AC;DPPDWRU\ <RX PD\ QHHG WR DGG LQ VRPH % supplementation if youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re going to follow this for a longer period.

LIGHTERLIFE DIET he LighterLife weight loss plans combine a very low-calorie meal replacement diet with weekly counselling. With LighterLife Total, for people with a BMI of 30 or more, you eat four â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;food packsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; a day, consisting of shakes, soups, mousses or bars, and no conventional food.

LighterLife Lite, for those with a BMI of 25-30, involves eating three food packs a day plus one meal from a list of approved foods. You stay on the plans until you reach your target weight. The meal plans can lead to very rapid weight loss and youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re advised to see your GP before starting. How long you stay on the diet depends on how much weight you have to lose.

However, evidence on the effectiveness of the 5:2 diet is limited when compared to other types of weight loss techniques.

SOUTH BEACH DIET he South Beach diet is a low-GI diet originally developed for heart patients in the US. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no calorie counting and no limits on portions. Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re encouraged to eat three meals and two snacks a day and follow an exercise plan. People who have more than 10lb to lose start with phase one. This is a two-week quick weight loss regime where you eat lean protein, LQFOXGLQJ PHDW ÂżVK DQG poultry, as well as some low-GI vegetables and unsaturated fats. Low-GI carbs are re-introduced during phases two and three, which encourage gradual and sustainable weight loss.

Brief history on Kaizen The shop with itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s present bow fronted glass windows was built in 1817, although there has been a shop on the present site for 2,000 years, in the 1960â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an excavation in the cellar revealed debris in the form of Oyster shells from where a Roman shop had stood.

BUSINESS PROFILE ason Hunt, Director of Kaizen Antiques was, born in Dec 1969 to British parents in Sydney, Australia. At the age of four the Hunt family returned to the North East of England where in the small community of Saltburn, Jason was well known to his neighbours for always being XS IRU D FKDW DQG KLV DSSUHFLDWLRQ RI WKH Âż QHU WKLQJV LQ OLIH At the age of thirteen, one neighbour who had a sort out in her attic encouraged him to hold a bric-a-brac stall to sell her unwanted items. Jason was showing early signs of being an entrepreneur and HYHQ EHIRUH WKH GD\ RI WKH VDOH KH KDG PDGH KLV Âż UVW GHDO LQYROYLQJ QR PRQH\ DV KH VZDSSHG D YDVH IRU D JROGÂż VK Soon a desire for better quality items led Jason to the local auction house where he was offered a part-time job as a porter. He quickly developed a good eye and an even better stock for the local collectorsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; fairs and markets at which he was now a regular.

Things led Jason to Rochester High Street and the shop he now co-owns. He came into the then Gem Antiques to sell some curios, at the end of the transaction, the then owner declared he was the Âż UVW SHUVRQ LQ VHYHUDO \HDUV WR VHOO KLP VRPHWKLQJ KH GLGQÂśW ZDQW and offered him a job on the spot.

On a January morning in 1990 he entered 88 High Street as an HPSOR\HH IRU KLV Âż UVW GD\ 6HYHQ \HDUV ODWHU QRZ WKH 0DQDJHU when the owners decided to call it a day they gave Jason the option to buy them out. After literally putting everything he owned into the business, his home was bare of furniture that had now become his stock and he had gained long-term friend Julia Brooks as his business partner.

Over the next years under the guidance of Jason and Julia, Kaizen began to move away from the furniture and clocks it had been known for and Jasonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s reputation for the love of jewellery which had started as a single cabinet in the shop grew. People from near and far made the journey in search of a special something and a shop with people they could depend on to go the extra mile.

The jewellery really came to the forefront with the opening of an on-site jewellery workshop in 2003.

Vision forward

They have the best team possible all under one roof. The jewellery workshop is second to none, whether they are designing bespoke jewellery, recycling, restoring family heirlooms or tracking down an elusive gem in an item of jewellery, after 25 years people know and trust Kaizen. Every week someone comes in and says â&#x20AC;&#x153;my friend said I have to come see youâ&#x20AC;?. When they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have the knowledge, they engage with the best in the gemmological world. They are keen buyers of jewellery, antiques, paintings, smalls and furniture â&#x20AC;Ś..Basically to get bigger, would be to dilute a winning formula.

Courtesy of our friends at Tollgate Limousines, we travelled like movie stars to Covent Garden where we got in the festive spirit with a delicious meal – raising a glass or two to the good health of all our readers and advertisers.

Then it was off to the London Palladium to watch a performance of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s wonderful revival of Cats – complete with Nicole Scherzinger.

Then it was a quick spin in a tuk-tuk in the centre of London before returning to Kent.
