MMI Hosts Annual Wall of Fame Awards Dinner MMI Preparatory School hosted their Wall of Fame dinner as a part of their annual Alumni Weekend festivities. Friends and family, as well as MMI alumni and faculty and staff, were invited to MMI’s campus to celebrate the accomplishments of this year’s Wall of Fame recipients. This year, seven members were inducted into the Wall of Fame.

Dear MMI Family and Friends, As the leaves begin to change and the air gets a bit crisper, I send you autumn greetings! Our students and teachers have been hard at work, and it’s been a wonderful start to the school year. I am delighted to share some highlights with you!

We kicked off the summer with the 14th Annual Jake Kislan ’56 Memorial Golf Tournament.

After an unfortunate bout with the weather on our original date, we were able to hit the course in July, and what a success it was! Thank you to all of our sponsors, golfers, and volunteers who made this sold out event so much fun and supported our athletic program with their participation.

Alumni Weekend, including class reunions, our picnic, and the 16th Annual Wall of Fame Awards Dinner, was held in early August. It was a wonderful opportunity for me to see some familiar faces and to continue to meet new ones. The Wall of Fame evening was a testament to the quality of students we have educated since our School’s inception, and once again, I had the honor of inducting a group of distinguished and accomplished alumni. The evening was both fun and inspirational. Congratulations to all of our inductees, and thank you to our Alumni for their ongoing support and dedication to our fabulous school.

We welcomed our students back in late August, and what a great beginning! Our seniors observed “Senior Sunrise” at our soccer fields on the first day of school. It was wonderful to see the class come together as they begin their final year at MMI. After sunrise, the seniors welcomed our students, both new and returning, to campus and handed out treats at both entrances to the School. It was heart- warming to watch our seniors take a leadership role and enthusiastically greet the students.

I am amazed at the many activities and events we’ve held since school has begun, and I encourage you to read all about them in this edition of MMI Today. Our students have embarked on a wonderful journey of learning, growth, and friendship. Our dedicated teachers have been working tirelessly to provide an enriching educational experience, and the engagement of the entire community has been inspiring.

A few of my favorite things so far this year have included: •

Watching and cheering on our fall sports teams: I am especially impressed with our athletes’ drive, hard work, and commitment to their respective teams! And we are equally thankful to our coaches for their time and dedication. I am proud of our Preppers!

Celebrating our Freshmen and Seniors on Bonding Day: The students really seemed to enjoy the experience of getting to know and support each other. Games, lunch, the Pajama Parade, and Bond Fire fostered positive connections between the two classes.

Participating in The Athena Ford ’01 Day of Service: Our students engage in community service, fostering a sense of civic responsibility and empathy, while making a positive impact on the world around them. I was honored to have met Athena’s family, and to have heard Austin Ford ’03 share with our students and faculty the tremendous impact that Athena had through her volunteerism and advocacy.

As we move forward into the rest of the school year, we look toward more exciting opportunities, events, and milestones. Thank you for your continued support as I embark on my second year as Head of School, and for your involvement in our school community. Together, we will make this year a truly remarkable one for our students!

Cover Story (continued) Andrea A. Kosko ‘74, the CFO of Fellin’s Jewelers, was chosen for her community service. As a freshman, Andrea was part of the first group of girls to be accepted at MMI. She credits MMI with helping her develop the tools to succeed, saying, “My MMI education is the foundation on which I have built my life. At MMI, I learned the importance of persevering in order to achieve success.” Andrea was selected for her dedication to improving her community. She has held multiple positions on the MMI Board of Directors, while also serving on the board for the Hazleton Area Public Library, the Hazleton chapter of the American Red Cross, Meals on Wheels of Greater Hazleton, and countless others.

William L. Spear R.Ph ‘79, the CEO and Pharmacist at Hazle Drugs was honored for community service.

Bill graduated from MMI, obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science, and his two-year post-graduate degree from the Clinical Nutrition Certification Board. He is the CEO and Pharmacist at Hazle Drugs, America’s oldest compounding pharmacy, most known for their natural and holistic approach. Bill lectures across the country to many health service organizations and serves on multiple committee boards, such as the Downtown Hazleton Alliance.

Anthony R. Cusat, former math teacher at MMI, was selected for his service to MMI for teaching nearly 50 years and coaching for 13. Anthony earned a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from King’s College. He began teaching at MMI on September 1, 1972 and, at the time of his retirement, was MMI’s longest-tenured faculty member. In addition to teaching math, Anthony also served as the Dean of Students for 19 years from 1987-2006. He was the advisor for various classes, as well as the Science Countdown team, Scholarship Bowl, Board Games Club, Hiking Club, Computer Science and Electronics Club, and Student Council. He won Schuylkill League

Coach of the Year during the ‘89-’90 season and was instrumental in creating the girls’ basketball program at MMI. Edward A. Kushma ‘62, former MMI Board Member, was inducted for his service to MMI. MMI was made a better place because Ed chose to devote most of his time to improving the school and inspiring the next generation of Preppers. For over 20 years, Ed volunteered as a member of MMI’s Board of Directors, and he was instrumental in helping to form the Wall of Fame. Ed’s many years of service on the MMI Board quantifies his dedication to MMI, but it’s his intangible selfless devotion he has for the school that truly shows his love for the community.

He serves as a role model for current and future Preppers who wish to give back for the betterment of MMI. Michael P. Scarlato, former history teacher at MMI was honored for service to MMI. For more than three decades, MMI has been a second home for Michael Scarlato who taught American History to students from 7th through 12th grades. He is still engaged with the school, serving as a substitute teacher during the 2021-22 and 2022-23 academic years. As a teacher, Michael organized class trips, guest speakers, and advised many clubs, such as the Prep Talk newspaper. He also oversaw Act 48 Professional Development classes for the faculty at

MMI and was the initial developer of the Summer Camp Program and Summer Concert Series.

Emmett J. Thomas, former MMl Boys Baseball Team coach, was chosen for service to MMI. Emmett Thomas served as coach of the MMl Boys Baseball Team from 2000 until 2015, leading them to a district title in 2014. His tough, but caring personality helped mold his players into successful people while still encouraging them to have fun playing the “kids’ game” while they had the chance.

He’s famous for his ”Emmett-isms,” such as “Ducks on the pond” and “Be the pig, not the chicken.”

Emmett’s outgoing personality has made him a popular figure in the MMI community and Freeland Borough. As a member of the Freeland Sons of Erin, he has made countless contributions to the community — even being named Irishman of the Year. In his spare time during the winter months, Emmett also served as a scorekeeper for the MMI Boys Basketball Team. If you ask anyone in the MMI community who knows him, it’s likely they would say that he helped make MMI a better institution during his tenure. The impact that he has had within the MMI community is something that will stick with those he’s inspired for a lifetime.

Irving G. Abrams ‘30, former operator of Freeland Overall, Freeland Manufacturing, and Freeland Shirt Company, was posthumously inducted for professional achievement. Irving graduated

from MMI in 1930 and four years later, received a Bachelor of Science in Commerce Degree from NYU. During the 1950s and 60s, Irving was a prominent business and civic leader in Hazleton and Freeland.

He along with his brother, Simon ’30, and father operated three garment companies: Freeland Overall, Freeland Manufacturing and Freeland Shirt Company. The former Freeland Manufacturing Company site is now the MMI Tennis Courts.

Outside of work, Irving volunteered his time to his community by serving as president of the Rotary Club, a member of MMI’s Board of Directors, a member of Hazleton’s Jewish Community Center Board of Directors, and a member of Pinemere Camp’s Board of Directors. Throughout his life, he was a strong ally to MMI. Irving passed away on January 6, 1970 and was nominated by his children.

The MMI Wall of Fame was created to honor and recognize alumni, past faculty or staff, and board members who have seen great success in athletics, business, the sciences, education, government, public service, the arts, or the humanities. These successes are represented in the following areas of the Wall of Fame: Athletic Achievement, Community Service, Service to MMI, and Professional Achievement. So far, over 100 recipients have been inducted.

The next Wall of Fame class will be announced in spring of 2025.

MMI Senior Selected As National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist MMI senior Nathaniel Neidlinger was selected as a semifinalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Neidlinger is the son of Amanda Neidlinger ‘98 of Weatherly.

Neidlinger was one of 16,000 students out of the over 1.3 million students who entered the 69th annual National Merit Scholarship Program to be named a semifinalist. He will compete for some 7,140 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $28 million that will be offered in the spring.

Semifinalists qualify by taking the 2022 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) which served as an initial screen of program entrants. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, semifinalists must fulfill several requirements including maintaining an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed

or recommended by a high school official, write an essay, and earn SAT and ACT scores that confirm the student’s early performance on the qualifying test.

About 95 percent of the semifinalists are expected to attain finalist standing, and approximately half of the finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar Title.

NMSC, a not-for-profit organization that operates without government assistance, was established in 1955 specifically to conduct the annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Scholarships are underwritten

by NMSC with its own funds and by approximately 320 business organizations and higher education institutions that share NMSC’s goals of honoring the nation’s scholastic champions and encouraging the pursuit of academic excellence.

Three types of National Merit Scholarships are offered in the spring of 2024. Winners of 2024 are announced beginning in April. Scholarship recipients will join nearly 375,000 other distinguished young people who have earned the Merit Scholar Title.

MMI Set to Welcome Prospective Students & Families to Campus MMI is holding the November Exploration Day on Saturday, November 18 at 9:00 am. Exploration Day allows prospective students and parents to learn more about an MMI education while touring the campus and meeting faculty. This is a great opportunity to meet other families who are also interested in giving their child an MMI education. Showcasing a variety of sports, clubs, and classes, the curriculum is challenging and rigorous. Mixing the basics of traditional education with advanced instruction, an

MMI education prepares your student for college and life beyond. For those seeking admission to the school, Entrance Evaluations are given on all MMI Exploration Days and can also be taken by appointment depending on class availability.

MMI Welcomes Fresh Faces: New Faculty Members Join the Team Head of School Theresa Long is delighted to introduce the newest additions to our esteemed faculty at MMI. These highly accomplished educators bring a wealth of knowledge, passion, and dedication to our school, and we are confident that their expertise will greatly enrich our academic community.

Mrs. Shannon Falcheck joined the MMI faculty as the new middle school STEM teacher. Prior to arriving in Freeland, Mrs. Falcheck taught Trigonometry/ Pre-Calculus and Calculus to Upward Bound students at Wilkes University. She also served as an online and in-person math tutor for students in grades seven through college level. Mrs. Falcheck spent three years in the Hanover Area School District as a middle school science teacher. She holds an MA in Classroom Technology from Wilkes University, a BS in Geography from Texas A&M University, and a BA in Secondary Education (Natural Sciences) from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Additionally, she holds a Pennsylvania Teaching Certificate in Earth and Space Science and General Science. A Veteran of the US Marine Corps, Mrs. Falcheck continues to pursue post-graduate certificates in math.

Ms. Jennifer Gerhard assumed the role of Music Director at the start of the academic year. She spent 13 years in the Hazleton Area School District as an instructor in chorus and instrumental music and served as the Assistant High School Band director for five years. While at HASD, she maintained active member status in several professional organizations including the Pennsylvania Music Education Association (PMEA), National Association for Music Education (NAfME), and Women Band Directors International (WBDA). Before joining HASD, she served as an Instrumental Music Director in the Archdiocese of Washington DC. Ms. Gerhard is the Music Ministry Director at St. John Bosco Church, the Advocacy Representative for PMEA District 9, is a board member of the Hazleton Concert Series, and is an active member of the Drums Lioness Lions Club. She is currently pursuing her Masters in Educational Technology from Wilkes University and holds a BS in Music Education from Elizabethtown College.

Mrs. Sara Myers rejoined the MMI faculty this fall as a physical education and health instructor. Mrs. Myers served as a long-term sub in the College Counseling office previously. Most recently, Mrs. Myers was the Assistant Director of Undergraduate College Admissions at Geisinger College of Health Sciences.

Prior to that, she served as an Assistant Athletic Director, the Senior Women’s Administrator, and Head Field Hockey Coach at Wilkes University. Other work experience includes: Administrator/Academic Counselor at Luzerne County Community College and an Academic Advisor/Head Field Hockey Coach/Asst.

Softball Coach at the University of Scranton. Mrs. Myers holds a MEd in Higher Education Administration from Goucher College and a BA in Public Relations from Susquehanna University.

Mrs. Jennifer Novotney was appointed the Director of the Joseph A. Turri ’45 Library and Learning Center and is responsible for overseeing the library program and learning support services. She served as the English Department Chair and English Instructor at MMI from 2013-2022. Originally from Los Angeles, California, Mrs. Novotney previously taught English and coordinated the Gifted and Talented Program for her school within the Los Angeles Unified School District. Upon moving East, she taught English, writing, and literature courses at Penn State University and then at Misericordia University and Wyoming Seminary College Preparatory School, where she also directed their Writing Centers. Mrs. Novotney was awarded the 2016 National Council of Teachers of English High School Teacher of Excellence Award and was the recipient of the 2017 YWCA

MMI Welcomes Fresh Faces (continued) PEARL Award (Professionalism, Excellence, Achievement, Role Model/Responsibility, and Leadership) for Professional Achievement in Education. She served as the Vice President for Secondary Schools for the Pennsylvania Council of Teachers of English from 2016-2019. Under her guidance, her students have won numerous awards, most notably in state-wide and national programs such as Poetry Out Loud, Scholastic Art and Writing, and the Pennsylvania School Press Association Student Journalism Competition.

In addition to the hiring of these new teachers, Mrs. Long announced that Mrs. Marci Hosier will assume the Dean of Student role, along with her current responsibilities of marketing and enrollment. Mrs. Lisa Ferry will assume the role of interim curriculum coordinator and Mr. Kyle Falatko ‘18, will continue in his role as a permanent substitute for the mid school.

Generous Donors Make a Difference MMI has received a number of gifts this fall that have been restricted to purchase wish list items for the school. We are very appreciative of all donors!

Atty. Lee Auerbach ‘73 and Leah Leddy made a gift this summer to upgrade equipment used by the MMI Photography Club.

While visiting from Florida during alumni weekend, Richard Abrams ’88 donated funds to further support the work being done by MMI students who are participating in the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science (PJAS). He also donated a number of personal items in memory of his parents, Edward Abrams ’62 and Marlene Abrams, and numerous mining artifacts.

MMI received a grant this fall from The Robert D. & Margaret W. Quin Foundation to support the music program. The funding allowed for the purchase of a Roland keyboard, 20 bell sets and mallets, a number of cables, and a portable PA system with Bluetooth capabilities for use during performances.

President Emeritus Bill Shergalis ’58 and his wife, Miki, made a gift to MMI’s fall sports program that was allocated to mid-school soccer. The team used the donation to purchase training aids such as hurdles and cones, soccer balls, and practice pinnies. The Shergalis’ also made a gift towards the maintenance and upkeep of Sarah’s Garden in the Mildred Kulp Kahler Courtyard. Sarah’s Garden was created in memory of Sarah Yuscavage ’04, a student who passed away during her senior year at MMI. Finally, the Shergalis’ donated funds for extra baseballs for the Varsity Baseball Team in memory of his late brother, David Shergalis ’66.

New wind screens were installed on the renovated Tennis Courts. The logoed screens were made possible by funding from The Benjamin P. Turri Athletic Endowment Fund of The Luzerne Foundation.

The Weis4School program donated $585 in September to the MMI Parents Association which will be used for student activities throughout the year.

Dr. Cornelius Coll ‘60 and Mrs. Anne Coll made a pledge to the school to fund a three-year site license for the math software, Kuta. MMI’s entire math department now has access to use the software in pre-algebra, algebra 1 & 2, geometry, precalculus, and calculus. It will give MMI’s math faculty the ability to personalize worksheets and assessments to individual students. Teachers are able to choose questions from a data base, personalize to their specific lessons and content, and use the questions/solutions/graphs as part of their teaching methodology.

Alumni Reunite and Reconnect MMI is incredibly grateful to our dedicated alumni for making our recent class gatherings a resounding success. Their participation not only rekindled nostalgic memories but also enriched the sense of unity within our school community. Their ongoing connection to MMI is truly appreciated!

The Class of 1983 visited campus on Saturday, June 24 for a tour as part of their 40th reunion celebration. Head of School Theresa Long and Director of Advancement Kim McNulty led the tour, and the class enjoyed some photo recreations from their time at MMI and a visit to the coal stoker. On Friday night there was an informal gathering for those coming into town or those who could not attend the dinner. The 40th reunion dinner was hosted by Valley Country Club on Saturday night.

On July 22, the Class of 1988 gathered at the home of Chuck Stoffa ‘88 to celebrate their 35th reunion. It was a great day of reminiscing and catching up!

The Class of 1973 celebrated their 50th with a weekend full of events in early August. The celebration began with a round of golf at Valley Country Club on Friday, August 4 followed by an informal gathering at Cuz-N-Joe’s. The Class then gathered at MMI for the Alumni Picnic on Saturday and had their 50th Reunion dinner Saturday night at Four Blooms before wrapping things up with a Farewell Breakfast.

The Class of 1980 held a mini-reunion at the home of Michele Krusinski ‘80 on July 29. President Emeritus Joe Rudawski and his wife, Jean, joined Michele, David Africa ‘80, Sherri Dzurishin ‘80 and her husband Joe, Vivian Michalic ‘80 and her husband Mark, Todd Schell ‘80, and Vanessa Baran ‘78. A great time was had by all!

Beth Dessen Duffy ‘78 organized a luncheon on August 28 at Fratelli’s in Conyngham for an informal gathering of the Class of 1978 and their honorary classmates. Included at the catch-up was a visit by President Emeritus Joseph Rudawski and Director of Advancement Kim McNulty.

The Class of 1972 began gathering annually after last year’s 50th celebration and met up for lunch on Saturday, September 16 at Rustic Kitchen. A class-designed MMI shot glass was selected as a memorabilia giveaway at the get together. Moving forward, every year the group meets a new glass will be designed! Next year’s gathering will be held on September 21, 2024. If you are a member of the class, save-the-date!

On Friday, October 13 members of the Class of 1986 travelled to the East Village of NYC to see their talented classmate, comedian, and actor David Mills ‘86 in his critically-acclaimed cabaret show “Glamour + Despair” at Pangea. The members of the class were thrilled when their English teacher Donna Titus made the trip with them! They all agreed “she was the teacher who inspired all of us to find joy in reading.”

The Class of 2013 celebrated their 10th reunion on campus on October 21. Head of School Theresa Long, Director of Advancement Kim McNulty, and faculty members Lisa Ferry, Michael Mele, Jerry Pierotti, and Katherine Zucco were all on hand to visit with the class and tour the school.

Athena Ford ’01 Day of Service MMI held the annual Athena Ford ’01 Day of Service on Thursday, October 19. This event honors the legacy of Athena Ford ’01 who passed away in 2016 due to complications sustained in an automobile collision where she was a seat-belted passenger and suffered a traumatic brain injury.

Athena Ford’s life was marked by sincere empathy, care and concern for, and service to her fellow man. While a student at MMI, Athena started a chapter of Amnesty International, served on the Regional Planning Board for the Mid-Atlantic Region, and started a Yellow Ribbon Club to prevent teen suicide. After graduating in 2007 from Kenyon College, she was a community organizer in Philadelphia for Working America. She tirelessly worked in the field of health insurance reform, first for the support and passage of the ACA with the Philadelphia Unemployment Project, then as the statewide advocacy director for the Pennsylvania Health Action Network.

MMI alums Paul Lesser ‘73, Cal Herring ‘74, and Tyler Breznitsky ‘09 helped kick off the day by

speaking to students about what service means to them and the significance of community service.

MMI’s faculty led additional activities including discussions and videos highlighting the importance of service and the completion of service-based classroom activities. Starting at 9:00 am, students and faculty volunteered across the Greater Hazleton Community. Upon their return to the school at 1:00 pm, there was an all-school lunch before the students and faculty heard remarks made by Austin Ford ’03 about his sister’s legacy. A number of Athena’s family members also attended the assembly. The day wrapped up with some games for the students led by MMI’s Student Council.

Students volunteered at the following locations: The 6th graders stayed on campus and worked in the Mildred Kahler Courtyard and at the MMI Athletic Field Complex. The group cleaned up the gardens, weeded, raked, swept, and did some field maintenance.

The 7th graders walked to Freeland Public Park.

They raked and bagged leaves.

The 8th grade students performed numerous jobs including cleaning out stalls and grooming horses at Country Heart Farm.

The 9th graders worked at Valley Regional Softball Field, Butler Township Park, Valley East Little League, and the Butler Township Community Garden. They did field work, raked leaves, removed signage, weeded the softball infields, and helped to get the garden cleaned up and winterized.

MMI’s 10th graders were split into two groups and worked at two sites. Half of the group headed to Whispering Willows Park where they worked on the Valley West Little League Field, laying stone and continuing to assist with cleanup from storm damage at the field complex. The rest of the class was at Larock Park where they painted the cement barriers in the parking lot, picked up trash and limbs across the park, and cleaned the playhouse structure.

The 11th grade students headed to downtown Hazleton where they volunteered at the Pennsylvania Theater of Performing Arts (PTPA), the Hazleton Art League, and the Hazleton One Community Center.

The senior class performed their service at Rails to Trails where they collected trash, raked, weeded, and trimmed branches and brush.

MMI Holds 14th Annual Jake Kislan ’56 Memorial Golf Tournament

MMI hosted the 14th Annual Jake Kislan ’56 Memorial Golf Tournament at the Valley Country Club on July 19. It was a gorgeous day on the course, a sold-out event, and we thank everyone who participated in the fun day!

Congratulations to the team of Bill Dessoye, Adam Hoover, Patrick Knelly, and Bob Moisey who captured first place in the first flight, shooting -14 under par with a score of 57. Second place went to the team of Sean Brogan, Eric Dion, Mark Katchur ’95, and Jared Shafer ‘95 who shot a score of 60 (-11). In third place was the foursome of Jim Bell, Ed Gombeda, Jeff Robinson, and Tom Sarosky who were -8 with a score of 63.

PNC Bank and the Golf Technology Sponsor was Tri-Mountain Ventures. The Beverage Cart sponsor was the Class of 1995, and John Hersker ’76 was the Cart Sponsor for the event. Moore & Associates sponsored the Cocktail Hour and The Luzerne Foundation sponsored the Putting Greens.

In 2009, MMI chose to rename its annual golf tournament to honor longtime athlete and 1956 MMI graduate Jake Kislan, who passed away in 2008. Diane Arias-Tejeda ‘24 named a 2023 Alexander Hamilton Scholar Each year, AHS selects up to 40 high school juniors for their academic, personal, service, and entrepreneurial accomplishments, to participate in its no-cost, five-year empowerment program. These students receive mentorship, practical guidance, and a comprehensive network of support, much like Hamilton did, so they, too, can leave a lasting legacy that will change their communities, our nation, and the world.

In addition to the Hamilton Award, Diane has been recognized as a Hispanic Scholarship Fund Scholar and a QuestBridge College Prep Scholar. All three honors welcome Diane as a member of diverse and highly motivated communities of leaders striving for educational opportunities. In this pursuit, Diane pursues educational growth through courses at her local community college, even helping others along their own journeys through volunteering at her local public library. Outside the classroom, Diane’s love of languages and culture motivates her own research and sharing of her multicultural experiences.

Through her presentations, such as the importance of cultural representation and bilingualism in modern America, Diane strives to show audiences

that language can bridge cultures; when we learn to effectively use it across all avenues, more effective cultural exchange can bring about amity amidst cultures.

Additionally, Diane is involved in various extracurricular activities. She serves as Assistant Student Director for the Prepper Playhouse, Chief Editor of Yearbook, Vice President of the Chinese National Honor Society, and a member of the Varsity Girl’s Tennis Team. Previously, Diane served as a member of the Hazleton Junior City Council, Junior Leadership Hazleton, and the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership seminar. Finally, Diane has received a myriad of competitive awards in Poetry Out Loud, Future Business Leaders of America, and the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science.

Diane’s younger brother and her MMI community inspire her to achieve her personal success. As a soon-to-be first-generation college student, Diane has faced many personal challenges but has persevered, stepping-up as a caretaker for her younger brother, Anthony, who is following in her footsteps and is in 8th grade at MMI. She has received so much support from her community, and Diane aims to raise awareness about the circumstances she’s overcome, wishing to eventually become a support figure for others in similar situations.

The presence of our board, faculty, and parents fosters the sense of community which we cherish at MMI. Thank you to our families for their unwavering support and trust in our educational journey. Together, we create an environment where our students thrive!

Summer Camp Program MMI was excited to host another year of summer camp! We had 183 camp registrations across 17 camps held over three weeks this past July. The Preppers coaching staff and current students led sports camps again this year including Girls’ & Boys’ Basketball Camp, Soccer Camp, Tennis Camp, and Baseball Camp. Camps led by MMI faculty and staff were Asian Cooking Camp, Science Investigator Camp, and MythBusters Camp. The school partnered with L&K Productions for Welcome to the Legoverse Camp and Lights, Camera, Action! Camp. MMI also partnered with Minds in Motion for Chemical Creations, Outerspace Physics Fun, 6-in-1 Space Fleet Robot, and Cyber Crawler Robot Camp.

Prepper Field Day Prepper Field Day was Friday, September 15. All students were paired in teams spanning all grade levels and competed in a number of fun activities. Thank you to the Senior Class for planning this annual tradition!

Lunch was provided for all by the school while the Parents Association provided snacks and drinks.

Freshman/Senior Bonding, Pajama Parade, and Freshwalk Freshman/Senior Bonding happened at the School on September 22. This tradition starts with team building activities, followed by the long-standing tradition of the Pajama Parade, and ends with the Freshwalk where 9th graders are welcomed by the seniors through the doors of Old Main only to be exited again on Graduation day. To wrap up the day’s events, the freshmen and seniors had a “Bond” fire! To continue the bonding, a week later, MMI’s freshman and senior classes attended the Bloomsburg Fair together.

Around Campus MMI had seven students head to Atlanta in June to participate in the 2023 FBLA National Leadership Conference. The students who attended the NLC were: Caylee Herseim ‘24 (Public Speaking II), Robert Orbin ‘24 and Nathaniel Neidlinger ‘24 (as a team for Network Design), Corey Buchman ‘25 and Jason Roberts ‘25 (team for Intro to Business Presentation), and Kendall Orozco ‘25 (Intro to Event Planning). Hayden Schwabe ‘25 represented both the MMI and Pennsylvania chapters as the 20232024 PA FBLA State Reporter. The students attended a wide variety of workshops and business meetings, met and networked with business professionals and industry leaders, observed open competitive events, and made many new friends from all across the country while exploring several major tourist attractions within Atlanta, including the Georgia Aquarium and the Coca Cola Museum. Kendall Orozco placed 7th in the nation for her presentation in Intro to Event Planning. A special thank you to Mrs. Katherine Zucco for being the FBLA advisor and to Flashback Cinema and The Orlando Family Foundation for sponsoring the MMI FBLA chapter.

Over the summer, MMI’s Board of Directors announced their officers for the 2023-24 fiscal year and also named a new board member. The officers of the Board will remain the same as the previous year with Atty. Richard A. DiLiberto, Jr. ‘79 serving as Chair. John H. Hersker ‘76 will continue as Vice Chair, while John Slyconish ’95 is the Treasurer, and Anne J. Frey will be the Secretary. The Board also appointed a new member, Caterina M. Kline, who is a retired medical technologist and parent of Alex Kline ’19. Board members serve four-year terms.

This year’s officers and new board members were selected and vetted by the current Board through a nomination and voting process. The Board and its committees set policy, develop and approve budgets and are responsible for the governance of the school.

Khristian Banks ‘23 volunteered more than 500 hours by performing community service during her high school years at MMI and as a result she was recognized this summer by the White House with the President’s Volunteer Service Award.

The Class of 2024 was on campus a day early to decorate their parking spots. On the first day of school, the Class of 2024 held Senior Sunrise during the early morning hours and then joined forces with the MMI Student Council to welcome all students to campus and hand out MMI Power Bars.

Around Campus (continued) New student orientation was held on August 28 and MMI welcomed 52 new students to campus. The total enrollment at the School stands at 209 students. Geographically, 73% of MMI’s students come from within the confines of the Hazleton Area School District.

Junior Leadership Hazleton, a program initiated through Leadership Hazleton and affiliated with the Hazleton Chamber of Commerce, welcomed the 24th year of participants during an August orientation session. MMI members of this year’s Leadership Hazleton class are Corey Buchman ’25, Evan Pedri ’25, and Hayden Schwabe ‘25.

Mrs. Stephanie Shandra, Director of College Counseling, was a speaker at the first session and provided information that high school juniors need as they consider future college and career actions. Assisting the Program Coordinator were students from last year’s Class, including Diane Arias-Tejeda ’24.

Mrs. Jennifer Novotney, Director of the Joseph A. Turri ’45 Library and Learning Center, earned her Instructional I Professional Certificate in Library Science (PK-12) from the State of Pennsylvania. Congratulations!

MMI senior, Abigail Sparich ‘24, participated in the Iococca Global Entrepreneurship Intensive at Lehigh University over the summer. This immersive, hands-on program combines experiential learning and intercultural connection. After completing the program, IGEI graduates can: evaluate the potential of ideas to become successful innovations, create functional business/ marketing plans and compelling pitches, navigate cultural differences, and collaborate to succeed as a team.

A big thank you to Caylee Herseim ‘24 and Nora Herseim ‘26 who represented the MMI Interact Club and helped to beautify Broad Street. Interact is a Rotary-sponsored service club that gives young people an opportunity to participate in fun and meaningful service projects while developing leadership skills and meeting new friends.

Students in Spanish II and Chinese II visited NYC to see the Statue of Liberty and visit Ellis Island as they learned about immigration.

The juniors and seniors in Mrs. Katherine Zucco’s World History II class visited the Istanbul Grill on September 25. Students are learning about the Ottoman Empire and enjoyed authentic Turkish cuisine and history lessons from the family that operates the Grill.

On October 20, MMI students took a trip to the Corning Museum of Glass where history and science were the focus.

In the Classroom •

Sixth grade students in Mrs. Shannon Falcheck’s Science class swabbed their cheeks and looked at the cells under a microscope. Towards the end of the first quarter, students also made “cells” using the “organelles” they collected from home.

In English, 6th graders played Refugee Escape room, and were tasked with designing and playing board games they created tied to their summer reading.

AP Environmental Science students are studying molecular cycling and made presentations for introductory science students. They were tasked with storyboarding their respective cycles (Carbon, Nitrogen, Phosphorus) and creating a story line to “hook” young students on the concepts. Upper School students presented their stories to 6th grade students and were asked follow up questions by the class. Mid School students provided feedback to help fine tune the projects. This process illustrates the power of storytelling to aid in new concept acquisition.

AP Biology students are studying the shape • and formation of proteins by examining how functional groups interact (the parts of molecules that help form the overall shapes of proteins). Students are building chains of amino acids and then examining how they respond to certain environments when they are being formed. This study helps students form a visual understanding of molecular interactions.

Bria Kringe ‘24 was nominated and accepted into the 2023 Dream Basketball Classic which was played September 22-24. After rigorous review from the committee, the top athletes were invited to attend the three-day exposure event. The Dream Basketball Classic was a weekend long event of developmental activities and performance on a nationwide platform. Participation allows players to learn from some of the best teachers of the game, former professional players, and college and high school coaches. Committee leader and CEO of Dream Sports Group, Shannon Riley, said “the athletes that were selected have exemplified great leadership skills on and off the court. Bria’s total control of the ball is impressive and allows her to maneuver through defenses with confidence and precision. Her shot has great range, making her a versatile scorer and a potent longrange shooter. Defensively, her ability to force turnovers reflects how she can impact the game on both ends of the court.” In the Dream All-American Classic Bria came in first in the scoring blitz and runner up in the three-point contest by one point. In the game, her team won first place and she tallied 6 points 7 rebounds. Bria was invited to play in the next game in Dallas, TX.

The Varsity Soccer Team designated their match on September 15 as a Coaches vs.

Cancer game. The game was a loss for the Preppers, but the team won the day in their mission to raise funds and awareness for pediatric cancer. A car wash after the match and the selling of t-shirts raised money to be donated to pediatric cancer research.

On September 25, Evan Pedri ‘25 was named the Standard Speaker’s Athlete of the Week for his play on the soccer field. He recorded a hat trick with three goals, including the clinching tally, in a 4-2 win over Nanticoke. He also had an assist in the Preppers 1-1 tie with Notre Dame-East Stroudsburg.

Golfer Lex Lispi ‘24 qualified to compete in the PIAA District 2 Class-AA Golf Championship on October 3 at Fox Hill Country Club in Exeter. He finished in a tie for 19th place in the District event.

The second week of school wrapped up with a Pep Rally sponsored by MMI’s Student Council honoring the fall athletes. Over 50% of MMI’s eligible students participate in fall sports!

On September 11, Kendall Orozco ‘25 was named the Standard Speaker’s Athlete of the Week. At that point of the girls tennis season, Kendall was 8-0 and had not dropped more than two games in any set

On October 2, the #7 Girls’ Tennis Team took on #2 Scranton Prep in the PIAA District 2 Class AA Quarterfinals. The Preppers lost the match that was held on Scranton Prep’s home courts.

Kendall Orozco ’25 earned the #4 singles seed headed into the post season. Kendall and Ava Genetti ‘26 played in the District 2 Class AA Girls Tennis Singles Championship Tournament on October 9. Ava posted a 6-2, 7-5 win in the play-in round before falling in the District first round. Kendall blanked Berwick’s Addison Post and Holy Redeemer’s Theresa Khoudary by identical 6-0, 6-0 scores to reach the quarterfinals. There, Scranton Prep’s Lily Lengyel posted a 6-1, 6-3 win over Orozco.

MMI also had two doubles teams competing in the District 2 Class AA Girls Tennis Doubles Championships on October 13. The two Prepper teams were Katie Sissick ‘24 with Diane Arias-Tejeda ‘24 and Kendall Orozco ‘25 with Ava Genetti ‘26. Kendall and Ava beat Riverside’s Leah Pfeffer-Anna Lima and Hanover Area’s Maggie Murphy-Brenna Slusser 6-2, 6-2 to advance to the quarterfinals. There, Dallas’ Sophia DePolo-Catlin Finn eliminated Orozco-Genetti 7-6 (7-4), 6-3. Katie and Diane fell 6-3, 6-1 in their opening match.

Congratulations to the senior members of our Volleyball team! Senior night was held on Tuesday, October 10 at the last home game of the season. The #5 MMI Volleyball Team played #4 Susquehanna in the District 2 Class A Quarter finals at Susquehanna on October 23, and their season came to an end with a first-round defeat.

The PIAA District 2 Varsity Cross-Country Championships was held at the Wyoming County Fairgrounds on October 25. MMI runners who competed were Katelyn Gera ‘27, Diane Kim ‘25, Mary Kate Kupsky ‘25, Amanda Stoffa ‘27, Isabelle Wells ‘25, Delilah Yatsko ‘27, and Winni Zheng ‘25. Mary Kate Kupsky ’25 finished fifth in a time of 21:50.9 and advanced to the PIAA State Championship Meet in Hershey on November 4.

Deaths Dr. Jay H. Apfelbaum ‘58 passed away on August 26, 2022. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Harriet; daughters, Melissa Apfelbaum and partner Georges Menard, and Susan Apfelbaum.

Fernando Barata ‘50 died on September 29, 2023.

Fred is survived by his wife of 63 years, Philomena.

He is also survived by daughter Mary Dean and her husband, Thomas; daughter Helen DiTommaso and her husband, Joseph; daughter Ann Cady and her husband, Scott; and eight grandchildren.

Joseph Bereznak ‘54 passed away on October 6, 2023. He is survived by his three children, eleven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and six step-children.

Elaine Cabell passed away October 8, 2023. She had several hip and knee surgeries which prevented her from standing for long hours, which led her to work for the Sophia G. Coxe Society and MMI Preparatory School. Elaine was employed at the School in the office as a Secretary from 1992-2003. Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, were her three brothers, Francis Cabell, James Cabell, and Michael Cabell. She is survived by her brother, Ronald Cabell; and several nieces and nephews.

Mary T. Fatula passed away on September 28, 2023.

She is survived by her daughters, Dawn Crockford and husband, Keith; and Mary Beth Elias; and grandchildren including Brandon Crockford ‘20.

Paul Feno passed away on October 19, 2023.

Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, were siblings, George, Michael, Helen, Mary, and Anna. Surviving are his wife, Margaret; sons, Paul Feno ’70 and Joseph Feno ‘73; daughter-in-law, Randi; three grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and many nieces and nephews.

David Narrow passed away on July 31, 2023. He is survived by his children, Howard Narrow and his wife, Marie; Rhona Narrow; and his grandsons Joshua Narrow ‘17 and Jacob Narrow.

Mary Lou Radick passed away on May 7, 2023. She is survived by her daughter, Atty. Paula Radick ‘89.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Frances, daughters; Judi Sherman; Lisa Angelo and her husband Robert; and three grandchildren. He is also survived by cousins Jacob Sherman ’60 and Dr. Fredrick Sherman ’63.

William Spear passed away on September 9, 2023.

Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, were his brother, James; and sister, Marie Spear.

Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Mary; son, Bill Spear ‘79 and his wife, Marylynne; daughter, Patrice Myer ‘82 and her husband, Jeff; seven grandchildren including Billy Spear ‘15, Evan Spear ‘17 and Zander Spear ‘21; two great-grandchildren on the way; and several nieces and nephews.

Paul’s late wife, Nancy, was the first female appointed to MMI’s Board of Directors in 1978.

She served until 1984 and was the Chair from 1981-84. He is survived by sisters-in-law Marion Zabitchuck and Anna Breshock; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Stanley B. Warner II ‘56 passed away on July 1, 2023. Stan was predeceased by his father, Stanley Warner ‘27, sister Barbara Kenvin, and brother

in law Joseph Karpowich ‘65. He is survived by his wife, Joan; sister, Ellen Ann Karpowich; son Stanley Warner III ‘92 and his wife, Missy; daughter Joleen Verbonitz and her husband, Richie; four grandchildren including Ethan Warner ‘19 and Grace Warner ‘22; and numerous nieces and nephews including Angelo Dubravski ‘80 and Rebecca Warren ‘84.

Conrad Woodring passed away on February 24, 2023. He is survived by his children; Dennis Woodring; Donald Woodring, and wife Christine; and Beth Woodring ‘79.

Alumni Notes What’s happening with MMI graduates around the globe In June, Lynn Bigelow ’80 assumed the position of the Director of Cybersecurity Education at Messiah University in the Department of Computing, Mathematics, and Physics.

Marcus Danchision ’21 was named to the Patriot League’s Academic Honor Roll in Baseball. He attends Lehigh University where he is a Psychology major.

Ian Dewar ’19 received a Bachelor of Science degree in Hospitality Leadership at Wilkes University’s summer commencement ceremony.

On August 2 at Italian Heritage Night, Board Chair Rick DiLiberto ‘79 threw out the ceremonial first pitch for the Wilmington Blue Rocks, the A affiliate of the Washington Nationals.

Lauren Herman ‘19 earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and Environmental Science from Dickinson College at commencement ceremonies on May 21.

She was also named to the Dean’s List.

Morgan Long ’19 graduated from Lehigh University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science and Business in May. He is now working as an analyst for Goldman-Sachs in New York City.

E. Connor McNelis ‘10 earned a Master of Business Administration in May 2023 from Bloomsburg University.

He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Bloomsburg University in 2017. Connor currently works for Reed Tech, a subsidiary of LexisNexis as an Associate Product Manager in the IT industry for Medical Device Companies.

After graduating from St. Joseph’s University magna cum laude in 2022, Stephanie Zellner ‘18 chose to join the Jesuit Volunteer Program (JVC) and was assigned to University of Detroit in the Campus Ministry department. Her role included guiding and working with students on various immersion programs both locally and interstate. She successfully completed her volunteer work and is now headed to Boston

Alumni Notes (continued) College where she was awarded a full scholarship to the Theology and Religion Masters program. While there, she will also attain a Masters in Social Work.

Stephanie’s volunteer work will not come to an end as she will be in close contact with the Boston JVC house volunteers.

Congratulations to Jan Wessel ‘09, Executive Vice President & CFO, and the whole team at EAM-Mosca Corp who broke ground on their expansion on June 28. The $9 million new facility is part of a larger $20.6 million strategic initiative to expand the company’s operational footprint within the state. Julia Snyder ‘18 was named a recipient of the Wilkes-Barre Law and Library Scholarship. She began her legal studies at Villanova Law School in August.

Director of College Counseling Stephanie Shandra caught up with Marianne Virnelson ‘13 in Baltimore while attending the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) Annual Conference. Marianne is currently working as a Coordinator of Events for the Undergraduate Admissions Office at the University of Maryland, one of the Conference’s host schools.
