Dear Friends of MMI,
I still get a special feeling every time I walk into MMI and gaze up at the white cupola on Old Main. It’s not just nostalgia. It’s a feeling of overwhelming hope and inspiration. This year, we have illuminated Old Main’s cupola so everyone can admire it as it shines as a beacon in the night. We want that image to welcome all our community’s children and embody hope and inspiration. As your Board Chair, I hear repeatedly how MMI and her dedicated teachers have changed your lives, and so many of you have “paid it forward” and generously supported MMI with your time, treasure, and talents.
An investment in students yields incredible returns. On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to share our deep gratitude with each of you for your support of our school. Your steadfast dedication to MMI allows us to continue to provide an extraordinary educational experience for each student, despite the challenges in the world around us.
No matter your personal contribution—as a donor, volunteer, mentor, or proud Prepper fan—you are helping to enrich the MMI experience for our students. Your generosity provides critical support for curricular and programmatic innovations and enhancements, ongoing faculty professional development, improvement of our facilities, and financial assistance for our families in need.
I see how extraordinary our students are, how academically capable and civic-minded, and I know that they are going to make a difference in this world. The education they are receiving at MMI is preparing them to lead, heal, build, innovate, teach, create, and take on the complex challenges we face as a society. To each of you, we cannot say thank you enough times for maintaining the dedication, commitment, and passion for our mission. As stewards of MMI’s long and august history and bright future, we are continuing our mission in the most effective ways and by the best means.
I am pleased to present the 2023-2024 Annual Donor Report, highlighting gifts made to MMI during the last fiscal year. You are a partner in our past and future success, and I hope the report gives you confidence and affirms your generous investment in our school.
Since 1879, MMI has been a font of hope and inspiration. The next generation of MMI students is hearing her promises. I trust, long after my service, a future Board Chair will gaze up at Old Main’s handsome shining cupola on a cool autumn evening, as copper leaves spin around it, and feel that same overwhelming hope and inspiration.
With warmest regards,
Richard A. DiLiberto Jr., Esq. ’79 Chair of the Board of Directors
Hello Friends of MMI,
I’m thrilled to connect with you once again as we reflect on a year of growth, innovation, and potential at MMI. Your continued support has been inspiring, and I’m eager to share in this report how your generosity is shaping the future of our school.
This past year, your contributions have done more than support our programs—they have ignited a passion for learning, exploration, and excellence in every corner of our campus. Our classrooms are buzzing with new ideas, our sports fields echo with cheers of teamwork, and our entire community is more vibrant because of you. Every donation, large or small, has a ripple effect, touching the lives of our students in ways that will carry them forward into their promising futures.
But it’s not just about what happens within our walls. Your investment in MMI is an investment in the world beyond. Each student you support is a future leader, thinker, and doer—equipped to make meaningful contributions to society.
As we look ahead, I am filled with optimism and excitement. The road before us is bright, and together, we will continue to cultivate an environment where students can thrive, excel, and ultimately, make a difference.
Thank you for your unwavering commitment to MMI. Here’s to another year of shared success and impactful education.
Warm regards,
Theresa Long Head of School
The 2023-2024 MMI Annual Fund was very successful and drew gifts from many groups. These charts take a look at these sources and paint a picture of MMI’s funding. Thank you, MMI donors, for your continued support!

During the Athena Ford ’01 Day of Service, MMI’s 9th graders and their advisors spent the day doing clean-up at Butler Township Park, Valley East Little League, and the Butler Township Community Garden.
While the total cost of educating each student is $23,395 per year, the school remains able to keep tuition affordable by off setting the difference through income from endowment funds and annual contributions to MMI.
Through the generosity of our alumni, parents, and MMI’s extended community, this past year’s Annual Fund raised $966,138 in support of school programs and operations from 549 donors. Thank you!
● There were 94 gifts made to the annual fund of less than $25, and 222 gifts of less than $50! Small gifts to the Annual Fund matter greatly as they collectively contribute to a widespread foundation of support and foster a sense of the entire community’s involvement!
● First-time donors generated $37,829 in Annual Fund revenue stemming from 83 donors.
● Annual giving to MMI’s Endowed Scholarships and Funds reached $139,421 last year, up from $66,982 pre-COVID.
● MMI currently has 2,014 living alumni and their donations comprised $246,195 of the Annual Fund, an increase of over $10,000 from alumni contributions in 2022-23.
● Last year, the MMI Consecutive Giving Society was created to recognize those alumni, parents, friends, faculty, and staff who have made gifts for 10+, 20+, and 30+ consecutive years in support of MMI. Their consistent contributions play a pivotal role in sustaining our mission and programs year after year.
● MMI’s senior-most alumni continue to support their almamater. Gifts from Atty. Harry Carl Schaub ‘46, Mr. Robert Best Jr. ‘47, Dr. Thomas G. Gabuzda ‘47, Mr. John M. Durso ‘49, and Mr. Hugh B. Fischer ‘50 illustrate a never-ending dedication to MMI, which is a tribute to the quality of the education that our school has provided for decades.
● The Class of 1975 raised the most money with $107,056 in total gifts, while the Class of 1995 ranked second with $58,345 in donations. Also, above the $20,000 giving threshold were the Class of 1976 ($48,700) and the Class of 1958 ($25,920).
● The Classes of 1973 had the most donors with 12.
● The Class of 1954 had 50% alumni participation in the annual fund to lead the way. The Class of 1963 was at 47% participation, the Class of 1962 had 44% participation, and the Class of 1958 saw 41% of their class make a gift to MMI.
● Overall MMI alumni participation in the Annual Fund was 13% in 2023-24. According to the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), the national average for overall alumni participation in the annual fund is 8.4%. Alumni participation in Independent Day Schools is 7.7%, and participation in schools our size is just 6.9%. Thanks to our generous alums, MMI is well-above the national averages!
● Area businesses donating to MMI need-based scholarships through Pennsylvania’s two tax credit programs (EITC and OSTC) gave $75,000 this past year. Our scholarship program has received in excess of $4 million since the state program’s inception in 2005.
● The Grandparents’ Club was formed in 2011 to pay tribute to MMI grandparents and great grandparents who invest in the education of their grandchildren every year with a minimum gift of $100 to the Annual Fund. There are currently 23 members of this group.
● On May 7, we were able to bust through our Day of Giving Goal of $20,000 and ended the 24-hour campaign raising $37,045 from 147 donors! These funds were raised in support of the MMI Scholarship Fund, benefitting current and future Preppers. All of our respective challenges were met adding valuable “extra” dollars to our totals. It was an amazing day!
Thanks to the incredible generosity of our donors, the Annual Fund has made a tremendous impact on our School community. Your support has allowed MMI to broaden educational opportunities, upgrade our campus facilities, and cultivate a dynamic learning environment. These vital contributions are at the heart of our mission to inspire and prepare future leaders, shaping the academic experiences of every student. This past year, the MMI community came together to achieve a remarkable Annual Fund Campaign total of $966,138. We are deeply grateful for your support!
The Stanley B. Warner ’56 and Joan Warner Endowed Scholarship was established this year by the Warner Family. This family hosts an amazing legacy with our school, and we are grateful for their support!
On a fall day in 1923, Stanley B. Warner ’27 entered the doors of Old Main having no inclination of the history he was beginning for his family. Almost a century later, his great-grandchildren, Ethan ‘19 and Grace ‘22, became MMI’s first fourth-generation siblings. Their grandfather for whom this scholarship is named, Stanley B. Warner Jr., graduated from MMI in 1956 and their dad, Stanley B. Warner III, graduated in 1992. Left to Right: Joan Warner, Stanley B. Warner III ’92, and the late Stanley B. Warner Jr. ’56 participate in a first pitch ceremony during the dedication of Warner Softball Field.
At MMI, our commitment to financial assistance ensures that every family has the opportunity to benefit from our exceptional educational environment, regardless of their financial situation. Over half of our students currently receive scholarships, reflecting our dedication to accessibility.
In 2023-24, contributions to our Endowed Scholarship Funds reached $139,421, while our Day of Giving generated $37,045 for the Scholarship Fund. Additionally, businesses and individuals participating in The Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program (EITC) and The Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit Program (OSTC) generously donated $75,000. We are also excited to announce three new named scholarships: The Steven R. Lechman Endowed Scholarship, The Bernard C. Nosal Jr. ’59 Endowed Scholarship, and The Stanley B. Warner ‘56 and Joan Warner Endowed Scholarship.
Our work-study program continues to support students in grades 9-12 by offering grants based on need, merit, and citizenship. These students contribute their time to various tasks on campus during the summer, including coal bin work, shoveling ashes, cleaning, and groundskeeping. Last year, we introduced the Hersker Work Grant program, funded by John H. Hersker ‘76, which provides $2,000 grants to students who have an outside job and submit their pay stubs for verification.
Mid Penn Bank donated $2,000 to MMI’s Scholarship Fund through the Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) Program. Pictured are MMI Director of Advancement Kim McNulty and Mike Guba, the Mid Penn Bank Hazle Township Financial Center Assistant Manager.
Investing in professional development for our faculty and staff at MMI yields far-reaching benefits that enhance the learning experience for both educators and students. By continuously refining their teaching skills and staying updated with the latest strategies, our faculty can better engage and inspire students. Professional development not only sharpens instructional methods but also fosters collaboration among faculty members, empowering them to bring fresh, innovative ideas into the classroom. Supporting these opportunities is an investment in the overall quality of education at MMI. Thanks to contributions to the Annual Fund, our faculty attended numerous virtual and in-person conferences during the 2023-24 academic year. These opportunities have had a significant impact on both personal and professional growth:
● Mrs. Donna Titus, Associate Dean and English faculty member, participated in an online seminar focused on The Odyssey. The seminar explored a new translation that seeks greater accuracy in distinguishing “stock lines” from authentic events reflective of Greek culture, offering fresh insights into this classic text.
● The Math Department attended the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Conference in Washington, D.C., resulting in a comprehensive review and restructuring of MMI’s math curriculum across all grades.
● Mrs. Marci Hosier, Assistant Head of School, engaged in the ADVIS New and Emerging School Leadership Training Program over six months, equipping her with advanced leadership skills to support MMI’s mission.
● The World Language Department participated in the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages Annual Conference in Chicago, IL. Mrs. Christina Spencer and Señorita Syra Dewar focused on enhancing their teaching methods, exploring collegiate foreign language programs, and discovering resources to elevate our students’ language proficiency.
● Dr. Tammy Chrin, Director of College Counseling, attended the Pennsylvania Association for College Admission Counseling Summer Institute at Bucknell University, where she networked with regional high school counselors and college admissions teams. Reflecting on the experience, Dr. Chrin noted, “It was a great opportunity to learn about the latest trends in college admissions.”
● Mrs. Lisa Ferry, Art and Anthropology Instructor, is pursuing her Doctorate of Education in Educational Leadership at Wilkes University. This summer, she successfully defended her thesis proposal on High School Students’ Experiences with School-Based Meditative Practices and Their Impact on Emotional Wellness and Self-Regulation. She also earned an Internationally Accredited Certificate in Art Therapy this past year.
● Mr. Michael Mele, Associate Dean and Science Department Chair, is continuing his doctoral studies in Teaching and Learning with Technology at Lehigh University. He is set to conclude his research this year, focusing on how students use analogous information to connect prior knowledge with new concepts.
At MMI, we value the impact of facility upgrades, curriculum enhancements, and technology advancements. These improvements create an enriched learning environment that supports diverse learning styles, fosters collaboration, and prepares students for the future. Your generous contributions have played a crucial role in this journey, and we are excited to share just a few ways your support has made a difference.
● Richard Abrams ’88 made a donation to support MMI students involved in the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science (PJAS) by funding materials for projects through a student-grant program. In addition, he generously contributed personal items in memory of his parents, Edward Abrams ’62 and Marlene Abrams, as well as various mining artifacts.
● Dr. Cornelius Coll ‘60 and Mrs. Anne Coll funded a three-year site license for Kuta math software, enhancing our math department’s ability to tailor worksheets and assessments for individual students. This year, we are also incorporating Wolfram Mathematica and Alpha Pro, which provide valuable resources such as step-by-step solutions and practice problems.
● Sean McGraw honored his late father, Dr. Thomas McGraw ’52, with a donation that funded two reverse osmosis machines for our Science Department. These machines produce up to 100 gallons of pure water daily, ensuring the reliability of experiments in biological and chemical sciences.
● Dr. Philip McHale ’58 and Linda Tishko supported three key projects this year. Their donation revamped the Spanish Language classroom with flexible, moveable tables for enhanced conversational practice. They also funded the purchase of The Globe by LEGO for our sixth graders’ World Cultural Geography studies and established a Curriculum Collaboration Grant, providing summer stipends for faculty to develop interdisciplinary projects for the upcoming academic year.
● Onvo, through the ExxonMobil Educational Alliance grant program, provided two $500 gifts that enriched our Middle School STEM classroom with an advanced LCD Digital Microscope, scientific calculators, and our Technology Lab with Raspberry Pi computers. These tools facilitate interactive learning and enhance our tech and math classes.
● The Joseph A. Turri ’45 Library and Learning Center Endowed Fund of The Luzerne Foundation played a crucial role in enhancing our library resources. Their grants funded online electives, the first phase of our Library media revitalization project, our subscription to the Accessit Library Management System, and a transition to EBSCO for expanded digital resources, including eBook availability for the first time. Additionally, Turri Funds facilitated the expansion of our Learning Center, which now offers a robust peer tutoring program and specialized support in writing, math, and language.
MMI received two $500 Exxon Mobil Educational Alliance grants from Onvo last year. Receiving the first gift, pictured left to right are: MMI Head of School Theresa Long, Onvo District Manager Tomas Castillo, and Onvo Director of Merchandising John Parduski.

Field trips at MMI offer students the opportunity to extend their learning beyond the classroom, connecting theory to practice in meaningful ways. These experiences open doors to new environments, fostering a deeper understanding of the world and encouraging a lifelong love of exploration and critical thinking. Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, MMI students were able to venture off campus this year to a variety of exciting locations, enriching their education with hands-on experiences:
● Mrs. Katherine Zucco’s juniors and seniors in World History II explored the Ottoman Empire by dining at Istanbul Grill, where they savored authentic Turkish cuisine and gained insights from the family who operates the restaurant.
● The Foreign Language Department guided 10th graders to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island to delve into the history of immigration and citizenship, while seniors gained a global perspective by visiting the United Nations in New York.
● Mrs. Grete Floryshak’s 9th graders explored Eckley Miners’ Village, connecting their study of industry with the coal mining history of our region.
● MMI’s choral students had the unique experience of performing at the Luzerne County Courthouse in December and the State Capitol in March.
● The 10th grade class traveled to the Corning Museum of Glass, where they explored the connections between World History, Chemistry, and Computer Science.
● Mrs. Donna Titus and National Honor Society members volunteered at the Winter Wonderland event sponsored by Collaborative Autism Movement at Mohegan Sun, embodying the spirit of service.

● The 6th grade released trout they had raised at Nescopeck State Park and learned about water quality, culminating their Trout in the Classroom program.
● Mrs. Titus’ Comparative Literature class, along with FBLA Chapter Officers and National Leadership Conference Qualifiers, each made trips to visit a unique collection of movie and historical memorabilia owned by John Hersker ’76.
● Sophomores and juniors attended the PACAC College Fair at King’s College to explore future educational opportunities.
● Mrs. Christina Spencer led juniors and seniors to Queens Chinatown in NYC for an immersive experience in Chinese culture, where they practiced their language skills and enjoyed authentic cuisine. The seniors also traveled to New Jersey for a traditional Korean BBQ and hot pot experience.
● A generous donation from John Hersker ’76 supported the FBLA Club’s trip to Cinema & Drafthouse, where students enjoyed lunch and a movie, followed by an in-depth discussion at school. Flashback Cinema and the Orlando Family also helped fund student participation in Regional and State FBLA competitions.
● Thanks to the Parents Association, MMI held a spring field trip day for all students. Seniors enjoyed a day at Great Adventure on April 4, while grades 6-11 celebrated the end of the school year with a fun-filled trip to Knoebel’s on May 17.
Physical education and athletics are integral to a well-rounded education, nurturing not just physical fitness but also essential life skills. At MMI, sports participation helps students cultivate teamwork, discipline, and time management—skills that extend beyond the playing field and equip them for lifelong success. Additionally, athletics play a crucial role in enhancing concentration, reducing stress, and boosting academic performance and mental resilience.
Thanks to the generous contributions to the Annual Fund, every MMI student benefits from our Wellness Department and the 17 athletic teams offered across the grades. MMI proudly supports 12 Varsity-level teams and fi ve mid-school teams. Here’s how your donations have made a difference:
● Dugout Upgrades: Thanks to generous donations from Dr. Vincent J. Bobby ’75 and The Warner Endowed Fund for Baseball and Softball, this fall, we’re upgrading and enclosing the dugouts at MMI’s Athletics Complex. The new structures will provide better access and protection for our baseball and softball teams, especially during the unpredictable spring weather in Freeland. Additionally, The Benjamin P. Turri Athletic Endowment Fund of The Luzerne Foundation is funding the installation of two outdoor batting cages as part of this project.
● Trail Maintenance: Contributions towards the school’s operational budget allowed for essential summer work on The Bernard Cortese ‘40 and Shayna Cortese Schiavo Trail, which circles the Athletics Complex and serves as the home course for MMI’s Cross Country Team. This work included erosion control and trail improvements, ensuring a safe and challenging course for our athletes.
● Basketball Program Enhancements: An anonymous donor, along with the Shergalis family, contributed to our MMI Basketball Program. Their support allowed us to purchase a large digital wall clock for timing sessions across various sports and physical education classes, as well as an MMIlogoed rolling whiteboard that serves multiple sports teams with its dual-sided design.
● Tennis Court Wind Screens: The installation of new, logoed wind screens on the renovated tennis courts last fall was made possible by funding from The Benjamin P. Turri Athletic Endowment Fund of The Luzerne Foundation, enhancing the playing experience for our tennis teams.
● Gymnasium Banners: Early this year, the sports banners in the MMI gymnasium were updated and replaced, thanks to funds raised from various sources dedicated to athletics.
● Hudl System Investment: An anonymous donor committed to a three-year gift through The Luzerne Foundation to support the MMI Athletic Program’s purchase of a robust Hudl system. Now in its second year of use at MMI, Hudl provides advanced video analysis and coaching tools, elevating the training and performance of our sports teams.
● Soccer and Baseball Training Equipment: President Emeritus Bill Shergalis ’58 and his wife, Miki, generously supported our fall sports program, with their gift benefiting the middle school soccer team. The donation enabled the purchase of training aids like hurdles and cones, soccer balls, and practice pinnies. The Shergalis’ also donated funds for extra baseballs for the Varsity Baseball Team in memory of David Shergalis ’66. Robert Koslap ‘65 and Carol Koslap, donating in memory of William “Rover” Schaub ‘48 and Michael Koslap ‘74, also made a financial contribution for the Preppers’ Baseball program.
Funds to support the Athletics program at MMI are also raised annually at the Jake Kislan ’56 Memorial Golf Tournament where our alumni and community friends come out to enjoy a great day at Valley Country Club! Pictured above at this year’s event are: Anthony Urillo ’89, Dr. Bill Spear ’15, Bill Spear ’79, and Zander Spear ’21.
Your generous contributions fuel the creativity of every MMI student, empowering our art program to thrive. Through your support, we enrich the MMI educational journey by cultivating emotional intelligence and offering students a distinctive way to express and understand the world.
Thanks to The Barbara L. Sowers and Joseph A. Turri ’45 Music, Drama, and Fine Arts Endowed Fund, we were able to enhance our art program significantly this year. We upgraded and expanded our art supplies, enabling students to explore new techniques in painting, fiber arts, mixed media, photography, and metal works. Additionally, this fund supports the professional growth of our art teachers by covering their membership dues to the National Association of Educators of Art.
The new counter-height tables and stools in the MMI art room, acquired over the summer, offer students a more comfortable and dynamic workspace. These improvements are designed to boost both creativity and collaboration, setting the stage for a vibrant and engaging school year ahead.
At MMI, the performing arts program provides students with a dynamic space to express their creativity while nurturing their cognitive and emotional growth. By engaging in rehearsals and delivering musical and dramatic performances, students boost their self-confidence and contribute to the school’s vibrant and well-rounded culture.
● This year, a generous grant from The Robert D. & Margaret W. Quin Foundation significantly bolstered our music program. With these funds, MMI purchased a Roland keyboard, 20 bell sets with mallets, various cables, and a portable PA system equipped with Bluetooth, enhancing our performance capabilities.
● Additional support from The Barbara L. Sowers and Joseph A. Turri ’45 Music, Drama, and Fine Arts Endowed Fund of the Luzerne Foundation enabled us to acquire new concert stands, a dolly, and cover numerous student competitions and the choral field trip to the State Capitol.
● This year’s Prepper Playhouse production of “Mamma Mia!” brought together more than 50 students from all grade levels at MMI. John Hersker ’76 once again showed his unwavering support with a donation that helped pay for scene supplies, scores, recorded music, and costume rentals for the production. The Sowers and Turri Fund also contributed to professional sound and lighting by City Entertainment Systems, adding a polished finish to our students’ performances in the Athletic and Drama Complex.
Endowed Scholarships exist in perpetuity within MMI’s endowment. Income from these funds is used to support need-based financial aid to current MMI students on an annual basis. Endowed Scholarships are established with a minimum gift of $25,000.

The Black Diamond Society was created in 2012 to honor those individuals and organizations who have generously supported MMI Preparatory School throughout the years. It is MMI’s most prestigious donor society and includes benefactors whose lifetime giving to MMI surpasses the $100,000 mark. There are currently 56 members of the Black Diamond Society and we welcome the four additions who joined this society through their philanthropy over the past year!
A great part of our MMI legacy revolves around what was called “black diamond,” or anthracite coal. Black diamonds burn the most steadily, cleanly, and longest of all coal. The black diamond was the most treasured type of coal, just like the members of the Black Diamond Society at MMI are our most respected donors.

The MMI Consecutive Giving Society was created in 2023 to recognize those alumni, parents, friends, faculty, and staff who have made gifts for 10+, 20+, and 30+ consecutive years in support of MMI. Their consistent contributions play a pivotal role in sustaining our mission and programs every year. Inclusion in this distinguished group is designed to celebrate the value of loyalty among consistent donors. By earning a place in this society, a donor becomes a driving force behind the continuity of MMI’s initiatives, allowing the school to plan confidently for the future, invest in innovative projects, and provide a lasting impact on the lives MMI touches.

The Grandparents’ Club was formed in 2011 to pay tribute to MMI grandparents and great grandparents who invest in the education of their grandchildren every year with a minimum gift of $100 to the Annual Fund. Through the Grandparents’ Club, the school honors those who carry on the tradition of supporting MMI’s Four Pillars of Excellence. It is one of the things we proudly pass on from generation to generation!

The Timber Society is an organization committed to the future support of MMI Preparatory School. The name of the society is derived from the wooden supports that were used in the deep mines to prop the roof, as well as the earth above it. The timbers allowed the miners to move forward in their quest of anthracite coal as they earned a living and fueled the industrial revolution.
The symbol for the Timber Society is the White Oak (Quercus alba), which is native to the eastern United States and was harvested for use as timbers in the mines. At maturity, it can reach 100 feet in height and is a wide-spreading specimen whose leaves turn rich purple and wine in the autumn.
The large tree provides shade and beauty as it grows. The timbers permitted the deep mines to be used to extract the anthracite coal from its beds below the surface. The timbers continued to serve the people above, long after the miners completed their work.
The Timber Society recognizes individuals who have thoughtfully and generously provided for MMI’s financial future through planned gifts. Through their foresight, they will continue to support the work being done by MMI well into the future.
