Dear Friends of MMI, Who is your MMI hero? Broad, Clarke, Cusat, Faltz, Gennaro, Gower, Nemesh, Rudawski, Schaeffer, Shergalis, Stiller, Stofan? As your Board Chair, I hear time and time again how these, and other dedicated teachers have changed your lives, and so many of you have “paid it forward” and generously supported MMI with your time, treasure, and talents. An investment in students yields incredible returns. On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to share our deep gratitude with each of you for your support of our School. Your steadfast dedication to MMI allows us to continue to provide an extraordinary educational experience for each student, despite the challenges in the world around us. No matter your personal contribution—as a donor, volunteer, mentor, or proud Prepper fan—you are helping enrich the MMI experience for our students. Your generosity provides critical support for curricular and programmatic innovations and enhancements, ongoing professional faculty development, improvement of our facilities, and financial assistance for our families in need. I see how academically capable and civic-minded our students are, and I know that they are going to make a difference in this world. The education they are receiving at MMI is preparing them to lead, heal, build, innovate, teach, create, and take on the complex challenges we face as a society. We cannot say thank you enough for maintaining the dedication, commitment, and passion for our mission. As stewards of MMI’s long and august history and bright future, we are currently working with our strategic planning committee, chaired by my respected colleague, John H. Hello Friends of MMI! It is with a gratitude-filled heart that I write this note to all of you! I have felt such joy as I have seen the incredible generosity of our donors during my first year as the Head of School. It takes very special people, like yourselves, to see the vision and future of our dear students! You consistently support our school with kindness and compassion for the students currently here. They benefit from your generosity in significant ways! I have the privilege to see first hand, day to day, how much of an impact your gifts have made. Our students are so excited when they see something new added to our classrooms, curriculum, and athletics. They feel invigorated and even more curious to learn. I am so proud of both the academic and athletic offerings at MMI. By continuing to enhance our classroom and athletic experiences, we attract and retain more students! These enhancements could not be possible without all of you. By your generosity, our students will enrich our communities and the lives of all of us! We are back full throttle since the pandemic. This coming school year we have planned out new field trips, including one overseas next summer! Our commitment to a varied and rigorous academic experience continues to be our goal. DID YOU KNOW? Through the generosity of our alumni, parents, and MMI’s extended community, this past year’s Annual Fund raised $1,137,431 in support of school programs and operations from 545 donors. Thank you! ●

There were 93 gifts made to the annual fund of less than $25, and 223 gifts of less than $50! Small gifts to the Annual Fund matter greatly as they collectively contribute to a widespread foundation of support and foster a sense of the entire community’s involvement! For the second consecutive year, over $1.1 million was raised for the annual fund without the realization of any bequests or planned gifts. First-time donors generated $62,998 in Annual Fund revenue stemming from 83 donors.

Annual giving to MMI’s Endowed Scholarships and Funds reached $191,379 last year, up from $66,982 pre-Covid.

●

MMI currently has 2,000 living alumni and their donations comprised $236,676 of the Annual Fund.

●

This year, the MMI Consecutive Giving Society was created to recognize those alumni, parents, friends, faculty, and staff who have made gifts for 10+, 20+, and 30+ consecutive years in support of MMI. Their consistent contributions play a pivotal role in sustaining our mission and programs year after year.

MMI’s senior-most alumni continue to support their alma mater. Gifts from Karl Bierley ‘46, Harry Carl Schaub J.D. ‘46, Robert Best Jr. ’47, and Dr. Thomas Gabuzda ‘47 illustrate a never-ending dedication to MMI which is a tribute to the quality of the education that our school has provided for decades. The Class of 1995 raised the most money with $75,467 in total gifts, while the Class of 1946 ranked second with $50,250 in donations. Also above the $20,000 giving

threshold were the Class of 1962 ($30,118) and the Class of 1976 ($23,918). ●

The Classes of 1970 and 1983 had the most donors with 13 each, while the Class of 1977 had 11 donors and the Class of 1995 had 10.

●

The Class of 1963 had 53% alumni participation in the annual fund to lead the way. The Class of 1954 was at 50% participation.

●

MMI alumni participation in the Annual Fund was 13% in 2022-23. According to the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), the national average for alumni participation in the annual fund is 8.5%.

●

Area businesses donating to MMI need-based scholarships through Pennsylvania’s two tax credit programs (EITC and OSTC) gave $151,919 this past year. Our scholarship program has received in excess of $4 million since the state program’s inception in 2005.

●

The Grandparents’ Club was formed in 2011 to pay tribute to MMI grandparents and great grandparents who invest in the education of their grandchildren every year with a minimum gift of $100 to the Annual Fund. There are currently 26 members of this group.

●

On May 9, MMI’s annual Day of Giving campaign was held and this year, our AP Environmental Science students created and pitched a proposal to benefit the School. Funds were raised to begin to transition the School to all LED lighting, decreasing our carbon footprint and making MMI energy efficient. The campaign raised $20,450 from 112 donors!

HOW YOUR DONATIONS IMPACT MMI Generous donations to the annual fund have profoundly enriched our School community, empowering MMI to expand educational opportunities, enhance campus facilities, and foster a vibrant learning environment. These invaluable contributions directly fuel MMI’s mission to inspire and prepare the next generation of leaders, leaving an indelible mark on the academic journey of every student. Gifts this past year from the MMI community resulted in an Annual Fund Campaign that raised a total of $1,137,431. Thank you!

Financial Assistance A strong financial assistance program ensures that all MMI families are able to enjoy the benefits of our School regardless of their ability to pay. Every MMI family invests in their children’s education to the extent that they are able, and over 57% of our students are currently receiving financial assistance (117 students). Gifts in 2022-23 to Endowed Scholarship Funds totaled $191,379, while gifts to Annual Scholarship Funds amounted to $34,450. Monies donated to our scholarship program through The Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program (EITC) and The Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit Program (OSTC) totaled $151,919. Three new named scholarships were added during the past fiscal year: The Anthony J. Colangelo Endowed Scholarship, The Major Robert L. Seitzinger Jr. ‘38 and Helen Seitzinger Memorial Scholarship, and The Warner Family Annual Scholarship. MMI continues to offer a limited number of work-study grants which are awarded based on need, scholarship, and citizenship to continuing students in grades 9-12. Students in the work-study program perform various tasks on school property during the summer months, including working in the coal bin and performing summer cleaning and groundskeeping. New for the upcoming school year is the addition of up to five $2,000 grants under the Hersker Work Grant program funded by John H. Hersker ‘76. To be eligible, students must have a job outside of school and submit their pay stubs for verification of their earnings. MMI has also allocated $74,000 in merit-based scholarships through our Academic Excellence Award program for the upcoming school year.

Professional Development Professional development for our faculty and staff offers numerous benefits that positively impact both educators and students. First, it enhances teaching skills and pedagogical techniques, equipping our faculty with the latest researchbased strategies to engage and inspire students effectively. Second, by staying abreast of educational advancements, faculty members can adapt their instructional methods to meet diverse learning needs. Additionally, professional development fosters collaboration among faculty and empowers them to integrate new ideas effectively into their classrooms. Ultimately, investing in ongoing professional development for MMI’s faculty is an investment in the quality of education at our School. Attendance at numerous virtual and in-person conferences in 2022-23 was supported and funded by gifts to the Annual Fund. In addition to the numerous conferences attended, Associate Dean Michael Mele is continuing his Doctorate studies in Teaching and Learning with Technology at Lehigh University. This fall he will begin his research focusing on how students develop and using analogous information to link prior knowledge to new concepts. Art and Anthropology Instructor Lisa Ferry is also continuing her studies towards her Doctorate of Education in Educational Leadership at Wilkes University. Spanish Language Instructor Syra Dewar earned her Master’s Degree in Teaching Spanish as a Second Language at Universidad Internacional de Valencia this spring. Facility, Classroom, & Technology Improvements Facility, classroom, and technology improvements are of the utmost importance in our School as they create an optimal learning environment for MMI students. Upgraded facilities provide students with comfortable and versatile spaces that cater to different learning styles, promoting collaboration and engagement. Incorporating advanced technology enhances educational opportunities by enabling students to access a wealth of resources, fostering digital literacy skills, and preparing them for the demands of the modern world. To enhance learning for our students, Annual Fund gifts contributed to many improvements in the school’s overall operation, facility and classroom upgrades, and technology and classroom resources. ●

Doris Gicking made a gift in memory of her late husband, David Gicking ’56, that was restricted to Physics for a wish list purchase. Physics instructor Tim Garvey used the funds to purchase spectrum tubes and a power source. Glass tubes filled with Hydrogen, Helium, Neon, Nitrogen, Argon, Carbon Dioxide, and Air are plugged into a power supply and then provide a means of viewing gas discharge spectral lines.

A donation from The Joseph A. Turri ’45 Library and Learning Center Endowed Fund of The Luzerne Foundation was used to add a number of online elective options to our curriculum for our students last year. This fund also covered book purchases, operational Library expenses, and our annual subscriptions to the Accessit Library Management System (integrated library management system that allows extensive access to resources from individual classrooms) and Infobase (educational content, digital tools, and technology for students and libraries).

An estate gift from an anonymous donor helped to fund the purchase of two new school vans which will be used for student transportation, field trips, and for our athletic teams.

President Emeritus Bill Shergalis ’58 and his wife, Miki, funded the replacement of the bench in Sarah’s Garden in the Mildred Culp Kahler Courtyard in memory of Sarah Jane Yuscavage ’04.

Flashback Cinema and The Orlando Family Foundation sponsored MMI’s Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) Club with donations that help offset costs for dues and travel to the regional and state-level competitions.

Jeff Gicking ’75 donated a unique wall sculpture to MMI which hangs in the Lobby to the Joseph A. Turri ’45 Library and Learning Center. The piece was designed by Yael Govseyeff Kahanov, a recent resident of Harveys Lake, PA. The body of Yael’s artwork consists of three-dimensional wall sculptures made of glass on copper.

The MMI science department currently uses a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) module to amplify DNA from very small samples to lab-required quantities for analysis. Students can amplify various strains of DNA or fragments of DNA for lab work but lack the ability to quantify their outcomes to guarantee viability. New technology exists that allows analysis of those samples using fluorometry to quantify the PCR output. Fluorometry tags specific molecules with fluorescent markers (which indicate concentration by intensity). The MMI science department was able to acquire a qPCR Fluorometer to complement the PCR process thanks to the generosity of two alumni donors, Dr. Cory Coll ‘60 and Mrs. Anne Coll, and Mr. Rich Abrams ‘88 and Mrs. Karen Abrams. All of MMI’s PCR equipment has been donor funded and allows for our students to execute experiments using equipment that is not common in a high school lab. Technology upgrade purchases included: an Envy Wireless Color Printer, new laptops for faculty and staff to be disbursed over a multi-year replacement plan, and a new IPad for Mrs. Donna Titus.

Field Trips Student field trips are invaluable as they provide real-world context to classroom learning, helping students bridge the gap between theory and practical application. These experiences expose our students to new environments, which allows for a deeper understanding of the world around them. By exposing students to diverse settings and perspectives, field trips not only enrich their education but also promote critical thinking and a lifelong curiosity for exploration. This year MMI’s faculty and students were able to head off campus to various locations, including: ●

The 10th grade traveled to the Corning Museum of Glass, to foster understanding of the cross-curricular nature of the studies in World History, Chemistry, and Computer Science and Programming.

The 6th grade science and social studies classes took a field trip to Rohrbach’s Farm in Catawissa, PA where they learned the importance of cattle, soil conservation, nutrient cycling, ground cover, and agriculture in society. They also took a farm tour, walked through a corn maze, greeted cows, and went on a hayride.

●

Mrs. Lisa Ferry’s Anthropology class visited Conrail Site 36LU169 where they were able to get real life experience with an archaeological dig.

●

Chinese and Spanish language students in 12th grade attended Language Immersion Day at the University of Scranton in the fall. Later in the year, the 11th grade Spanish and Chinese language classes took a trip to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty to discover and research their ancestry and personally experience the process of immigration. From this trip, they realized the language and culture barriers that immigrants faced when they arrived in the U.S. and the importance of learning another language and its culture. The Chinese language classes returned to Chinatown in NYC on May 4 and enjoyed authentic Chinese food and experiences.

Mrs. Grete Floryshak’s 9th grade American History Class took a trip to Eckley Miners’ Village to learn more about the history of coal in our region.

●

Students in 6th and 9th grade, and those taking AP Environmental Science, visited Lacawac Nature Sanctuary where they conducted water quality and biota studies on both the glacial lake and the nearby ponds. After collecting data, they gathered for lunch and listened to a presentation about their findings, environmental changes, and the significance of the lake conducted by the onsite science director.

Juniors and seniors in Mrs. Katherine Zucco’s World History II class visited the Istanbul Grill to enjoy the authentic Turkish cuisine, art, and

culture while learning more about the rise of the Ottoman Empire. Students then enjoyed baklava and lokum (Turkish Delight) in class while engaging in a Socratic Seminar designed for the students to explore and understand the reasons for the empire’s fall. ●

Students competing in Envirothon had a study day this spring. Students learn about aquatic ecology, forestry, wildlife, and environmental issues. Over 30% of MMI upper school students participate in this competitive event.

●

MMI held a field trip day for all students this spring thanks to the Parents Association! On May 10, the Senior Class went to the Baltimore Aquarium and Inner Harbor, and on May 19, 6th – 11th grade students spent the day at Knoebels Amusement Resort.

●

Board Vice Chair John Hersker ’76 donated to the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) Club to support a field trip to Cinema & Drafthouse. The students have lunch, popcorn, enjoy a movie, and return to school for an in-depth discussion of the movie they viewed. This year’s selection was “The Queen,” and the objective was to learn about business communications and leadership styles.

Athletics Physical education and athletics play a vital role in a school’s curriculum by fostering holistic development. Through active participation in sports, students develop teamwork, discipline, and time management abilities that transcend the playing field and serve them throughout their lives. Moreover, these activities contribute to improved concentration and stress reduction, enhancing academic performance and overall mental resilience. Annual Fund gifts help every MMI student by supporting their athletic development through the offerings of our Wellness Department and 17 teams across the grades. MMI offers 12 teams that compete at the Varsity level along with five mid-school offerings. Ms. Linda Schiavo stands with the MMI Boys Tennis Team. A gift from The Pasco L. Schiavo Memorial Fund of the Luzerne Foundation helped pay for the tennis court’s resurfacing last fall.

An anonymous donor has committed to a three-year gift through The Luzerne Foundation to the MMI Athletic Program to fund our purchase of a robust Hudl system. Hudl is a software platform that provides video analysis and coaching tools for sports teams. It offers the ability for games to be recorded by auto-capture cameras (indoor and outdoor) and post-game film can be broken down statistically for basketball, volleyball, and soccer. All MMI teams have the opportunity to analyze video, share, exchange, and create highlights.

Donations from Dr. Vincent J. Bobby ’75, The Pasco L. Schiavo Memorial Fund of The Luzerne Foundation, and The Benjamin P. Turri Athletic Endowment Fund of the Luzerne Foundation were used to renovate MMI’s tennis courts last fall. The H& K Group ground down the old court surface and paved the area, and the Breneman Company oversaw the re-surfacing and painting of the courts.

President Emeritus Bill Shergalis ’58 and his wife, Miki, made a number of donations to the athletic program which allowed for multiple purchases. MMI added score signs for all four tennis courts to track games and sets, a vertical jump trainer for the volleyball and basketball teams, basketball attire, and an infield nail drag and a light infield drag mat for the baseball field in memory of his late brother, David Shergalis ’66. Dr. and Mrs. Shergalis also provided funding for extra baseballs for the team.

Gifts from The Warner Endowed Fund for Baseball and Softball and Bob Koslap ’65, and his wife Carol, supported the expansion of equipment in the MMI weight room. The Weightlifting Club and MMI’s athletes will benefit from the addition of an Olympic hex trap bar, three TRX systems, farmers handles for loaded carries, a push sled, strongman sandbags, a wall-mounted squat rack, and multiple Olympic bumper plates for use in the Auxiliary Gym.

Robert Moisey and Janice Gans Moisey donated funds to the varsity soccer, varsity volleyball, and mid-school soccer program which helped purchase equipment and attire, as well as end-of-season social gatherings, for the athletes.

●

The Benjamin P. Turri Athletic Endowment Fund of the Luzerne Foundation also purchased soccer rebounders for our teams.

Dr. Vincent Bobby ’75 also visited with the Boys Tennis Team in the spring. Dr. Bobby talked with the team and checked out the resurfaced tennis courts that he supported with a generous contribution.

The Warner Endowed Fund for Baseball and Softball helped purchase a new Olympic hex trap bar as part of MMI’s weight room equipment expansion. Alex Neyhart ’24 competes during a home cross country match on The Bernard Cortese ’40 and Shayna Cortese Schiavo Trail.

Performing Arts Program Performance arts at MMI offers students a creative outlet that enhances their cognitive and emotional development. Through rehearsing and presenting musical and dramatic pieces, students build self-confidence and contribute to a vibrant and well-rounded school culture. Purchases such as new instruments and a music subscription to Soundtrap were funded by donations through The Barbara L. Sowers and Joseph A. Turri ’45 Music, Drama and Fine Arts Endowed Fund of the Luzerne Foundation. Soundtrap is an online music-making and recording platform that was created by Spotify in 2013, and since then has become a top tool for teaching music and recording in schools. A Digital Audio Workstation allows the students to record music on a laptop, as well as do all the necessary mixing and mastering. It functions by converting analog audio into a digital sequence that a computer can read. The first-ever MMI Musical Instrument Drive was also held this spring. The drive was an opportunity to bring new life to a musical instrument that is no longer played. MMI accepted donations of gently-used, working instruments from Mr. Frank Balon, Atty. The MMI Prepper Playhouse presented Disney’s The Little Mermaid this past spring, marking the first return of the School’s annual musical since the Covid pandemic. Participation in the Prepper Playhouse is open to all 6th through 12th grade students. MMI’s Prepper Playhouse musicals began under the direction of Mrs. Joanne Oakum in 2009 with the production of The Wizard of Oz and over 20 theatre productions have been produced since. The Sowers and Turri Fund provided funding to the Drama Club towards the purchase of professional Sound and Lighting by City Entertainment Systems for the production. John Hersker ’76 also provided drama funding for scene supplies, as well as the score and recorded music for The Little Mermaid from Musical Theatre International.

Fine Arts Program Your gifts inspire the creativity in every MMI student by supporting our art program. Our art program enriches the MMI educational experience by nurturing emotional intelligence and providing a unique avenue for students to communicate and interpret the world around them. This year, the MMI Photography Club was able to purchase new equipment thanks to two donations. The first gift was made by Atty. Lee Auerbach ‘73 and Leah Leddy, while the second gift came from Steven Silberg ‘92 and Jessica Silberg. Thanks to your generosity, MMI is continually able to upgrade and increase our art supplies to encourage further experimentation in areas such as painting, fiber arts, mixed media, photography, and metal works.

Lifetime giving of $100,000 or more is required for recognition in MMI’s most prestigious donor society. The Black Diamond Society was created in 2012 to honor those individuals and organizations who have generously supported MMI Preparatory School throughout the years. It is MMI’s most prestigious donor society and includes benefactors whose lifetime giving to MMI surpasses the $100,000 mark. There are currently 56 members of the Black Diamond Society and we welcome the four additions who joined this society through their philanthropy over the past year! A great part of our MMI legacy revolves around what was called “black diamond,” or anthracite coal. Black diamonds burn the most steadily, cleanly, and longest of all coal. The black diamond was the most treasured type of coal, just like the members of the Black Diamond Society at MMI are our most respected donors. Through the Black Diamond Society, the school honors the leadership and extraordinary support of these individuals and organizations who provide a foundation of financial support for both the current and the future student body at MMI.

The MMI Grandparents’ Club The Grandparents’ Club was formed in 2011 to pay tribute to MMI grandparents and great grandparents who invest in the education of their grandchildren every year with a minimum gift of $100 to the Annual Fund. The MMI Planned Giving Society The Timber Society is an organization committed to the future support of MMI Preparatory School. The name of the society is derived from the wooden supports that were used in the deep mines to prop the roof, as well as the earth above it. The timbers allowed the miners to move forward in their quest of anthracite coal as they earned a living and fueled the industrial revolution. The symbol for the Timber Society is the White Oak (Quercus alba), which is native to the eastern United States and was harvested for use as timbers in the mines. At maturity, it can reach 100 feet in height and is a wide-spreading specimen whose leaves turn rich purple and wine in the autumn. The large tree provides shade and beauty as it grows. The timbers permitted the deep mines to be used to extract the anthracite coal from its beds below the surface. The timbers continued to serve the people above, long after the miners completed their work. The Timber Society recognizes individuals who have thoughtfully and generously provided for MMI’s financial future through planned gifts.
