The Class of 2022 at Graduation

from the Chairman

Dear Friends of MMI,

An investment in students yields incredible returns. On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to share our deep gratitude with each of you for your support of our School. Your steadfast dedication to MMI throughout the pandemic allowed us to continue to provide an extraordinary educational experience for each student despite the challenges in the world around us.

No matter your personal contribution — as a donor, volunteer, mentor, or proud Prepper fan — you are helping to enrich the MMI experience for our students. Your generosity provides critical support for curricular and programmatic innovations and enhancements, ongoing faculty professional development, improvement of our facilities, and financial aid for our families in need.

I see how extraordinary our students are, how academically capable and civic-minded, and I know that they are going to make a difference in this world. The education they are receiving at MMI is preparing them to lead, to heal, to build, to innovate, to teach, to create, and to take on the complex challenges we face as a society. To each of you, we cannot say thank you enough times for maintaining the dedication, commitment, and passion for our mission.

I am pleased to present the 2021-2022 Annual Donor Report, highlighting gifts made to MMI during the last fiscal year. You are a partner in our past and future success, and I hope the Report gives you confidence and affirms your generous investment in our School.

With warmest regards,

from the Head of School

Hello Friends of MMI!

It is with a grateful heart that I have the opportunity to provide this greeting for my first time as Head of School at MMI!

Giving is an impactful act that many of us will experience. As parents of two MMI graduates, my husband and I have seen first hand the incredible generosity of our donors. The countless ways in which your philanthropy has benefitted the school are immeasurable. The impact of your gifts goes well beyond the completion of a new project or program. It extends into perpetuity as students continue to enjoy learning and growing from that gift.

As I have begun my tenure as Head of School, I have reflected on many things over the last several weeks. I have observed the commitment, dedication, and grit of our staff and faculty. This group is second to none! Each day, they come to school with one goal, and that is doing the very best for our children. I am inspired by all of them! And then, I see the faces of our students. They are curious, excited, and enthusiastic about the education they will find both inside and outside the walls of our school. The environment is electric and contagious!

I hope this letter provides excitement and renewed energy to all of you as well! MMI is a great place to be each and every day. The staff, faculty, students, and I are so grateful and appreciative of your support. We hope that you will continue to be moved and inspired by our students’ outstanding accomplishments and contributions to both MMI and the community at large!

With gratitude, Theresa Long Head of School

HOW YOUR DONATIONS IMPACT MMI

Your gifts to the Annual Fund support every aspect of school life. The generous contributions of the MMI community resulted in a 2021-2022 Annual Fund Campaign that raised a total of $1,187,835. Faculty professional development, student financial aid, academic materials and supplies, athletic team equipment, and music and art supplies are just some of the ways your dollars went to work immediately on the MMI campus last year.

Financial Assistance

A strong financial assistance program ensures that all MMI families can enjoy the benefits of our school community regardless of their ability to pay. Every MMI family invests in their children’s education to the extent that they are able, and over 54% of our students receive financial assistance. Gifts in 2021-2022 to Endowed Funds totaled $373,468 while gifts to Annual Scholarship Funds amounted to $23,011. Monies donated by both individuals and area businesses to our scholarship program through the Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program (EITC) and the Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit Program (OSTC) totaled $162,500.

MMI also continues to offer a limited number of work-study grants. These work-study grants are awarded based on need, scholarship, and citizenship to continuing students in grades 9 through 12. Students in the work-study program perform various tasks on school property during the summer months, including working in the coal bin and performing summer cleaning and groundskeeping.

MMI’s 143rd anniversary was celebrated as our community stood up for MMI with the 72 Hours of Giving Campaign to benefit scholarships. The campaign raised $13,966 from 93 people over a weekend in May. The classes of 20102021 won both aspects of the Decades Challenge with the most donors and most money raised. This young group set the bar with 36 unique donors giving $2,701. MMI’s youngest alumni also heard the challenge from past Head of School Justin Kleinheider. Alumni who graduated between 2010-2021 made at least 25 donations which triggered a donation of $2,022, in honor of this year’s graduating class from Justin and Michelle Kleinheider.

Facility, Classroom & Technology Improvements

To enhance learning for our students, your gifts contributed to investments in the school’s overall operation, facility and classroom upgrades, and technology and classroom resources, which continually better our academic and co-curricular programs.

● Doris Gicking made a gift in memory of her late husband, David Gicking ’56, that was restricted to Physics. Physics Instructor Tim Garvey was able to add a wave generator, wave amplifier, and a ripple tank to the lab. The new equipment allows students to study how waves are generated, the speed of wave propagation, the superposition of waves, the effects of varying water depth on waves and the principles of reflection, refraction, and diffraction.

● MMI’s Train Club, which gathers on Friday afternoons, was the recipient of an anonymous donation that is helping to fund their multi-year project of building Eckley Miners Village and the Freeland area surrounding MMI. The donation allowed the Club to purchase O-gauge train supplies including track, engine cars, and a power transformer. Also purchased was a Jeddo Highland coal hopper!

● Dr. Philip McHale ’58 and Linda Tishko funded a number of projects this year. These generous donors allocated monies to sustain the student mini-grant program for the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science. The funds in this program are used for student research projects that exceed basic out-of-pocket expenses. This year, funds were awarded to Amelia Minzola ’22 who used the added resources to purchase bovine bloodsamples, buffering solution, growth plates, spectrophotometer cuvettes, anticoagulant solution, and centrifuge tubes.

● John Hersker ’76 supported the school by purchasing a new podium and omnidirectional microphone for use at MMI events. The podium was donated in gratitude for the MMI Assembly Program and made its debut at Graduation 2022.

● Rich Abrams ’88 provided funding for a new CO2 incubator for the Biology Lab. Science Department Chair Michael Mele said, “More and more students are asking to study mammal cell lines, especially for their PJAS projects, which requires a CO2 incubator. This piece of equipment is critical for growing mammal cells in the lab.”

● Sean McGraw continues to support MMI’s science program in memory of his father Dr. Thomas McGraw ’52. This year MMI was able to purchase three Pipet-Pal Controllers. This equipment is used to dispense solutions into plastic or glass pipettes with speed and accuracy and can be used in both the Chemistry and Biology labs. They go hand-in-hand with the digital pipettes that McGraw’s donation purchased in 2020-2021.

● Technology upgrades were made to the school including:

Two new Dell servers were installed and two uninterruptible power supplies were added to help maintain the servers’ connections.

There was extensive work done to patch the network, which included reconfiguring the domain controllers and domain name system.

Thirty new Viewsonic overhead projectors were installed in MMI’s classrooms, and each classroom now has upgraded HDMI wiring for better connection to the new projectors.

Multi-factor authentication was installed on all teacher laptops and all of the desktop computers in the school.

Over 100 pieces of outdated IT equipment were recycled.

Two new access points were added to our Ubiquiti wireless internet system to improve Wi-Fi on the second floor of the school.

● MMI received a $500 grant from the ExxonMobil Foundation, nominated by Onvo, that the school used to purchase draft board and other supplies for the Glowforge Laser Engraver. During the past few years, MMI students have used the laser engraver to complete a variety of projects, including making ukuleles, 3D dinosaurs, and furniture design in engineering class.

● The Class of 2022 donated two picnic tables for use in the Mildred Kulp Kahler Courtyard.

Physical education and athletics are an important part of every well-rounded Prepper. Annual Fund gifts help every MMI student by supporting their athletic development through the offerings of our Wellness Department and 17 teams across the grades. MMI offers 12 teams that compete at the varsity level along with five mid-school offerings.

Donations from Dr. Vincent J. Bobby ’75, The Pasco L. Schiavo Memorial Fund of The Luzerne Foundation, and The Benjamin P. Turri Athletic Endowment Fund of the Luzerne Foundation are being used to renovate MMI’s tennis courts. MMI also replaced the mats under the stage in the gymnasium and the outfield wall padding on the baseball field.

Gifts from Bob Koslap ’65 and Carole Koslap, Dr. Bill Shergalis ’58 and Miki Shergalis, and The Warner Endowed Fund for Baseball and Softball supported our baseball and softball programs last spring with equipment purchases. The baseball team was able to purchase a GoPro camera for recording games with a backstop mount, an iPad to keep in-game statistics, bounce medicine balls, resistance bands, and olympic barbells for training. The softball team purchased a GoPro camera for game recording with the backstop mount and an indoor pitching mound with the restricted funds.

Performing Arts Program

Contributions to the Annual Fund support the performing arts at MMI. Despite a challenging year for the music program as we continued to adapt to pandemic-related protocols, MMI continued to thrive with new and innovative ways to bring music to the school. Purchases such as new choral risers and a music subscription to Soundtrap for Education were funded by donations to MMI from The Barbara L. Sowers and Joseph A. Turri ’45 Music, Drama, and Fine Arts Endowed Fund of the Luzerne Foundation. Soundtrap empowers students and Music Instructor Renee Marciante to explore creative sound recording in all subject areas, for all ages and ability levels. Whether students are looking at the way music can take presentations to the next level, collaborating with classmates to create a song, or recording podcasts to share knowledge on subjects, Soundtrap amplifies their learning and bridges the gap between technology and music. In-kind donations were also received from Tom Hamer ’58 and his wife, Kathy, who donated a flute and a violin to the MMI music program this year. The 1998 violin was made by Martin Sheridan of Abbey Strings and was used by Kathy in the Westerville Symphony in Ohio.

The MMI Upper School Drama Club rehearsed and prepared for their annual evening of One Act of Comedies with “Container of Sharks,” a spoof of the television show, Shark Tank, and a mid-school production of “The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon,” a retelling of the Brothers Grimm fairy tales. Thirty-six students, both onstage and off, were involved in the productions. Unfortunately, a COVID-19 outbreak in the springtime caused the cancellation of the final production. The MMI Drama Club and MMI Prepper Playhouse look forward to the new school year and a robust theater season! The Sowers and Turri Fund provided funding to the Drama Club for the purchase of costume and prop storage equipment, a multi-use utility cart, a heavyduty cart/hand truck/dolly for moving scenery and equipment, and a piece of portable stage lighting. John Hersker ’76 also provided drama funding for scripts, royalties, and costumes.

Fine Arts Program

Your gifts inspire the creativity in every MMI student by supporting our art program. This past year, many new projects and innovative 3D projects were introduced across the art curriculum.

Advanced Art students created contemporary artist umbrellas to be hung on the Coxe Commons ceiling. These upper-level students also completed a social issue mini-mural and experimented with digital photography.

Tenth grade students worked on digital photography with Photoshop manipulation and Ed Ruscha Word Paintings, while the ninth graders worked on a mixed media project with coffee cups and napkins. They decorated all around coffee cups, but first sketched their designs on a napkin. Mid-school art students made “Support Ukraine” sunflower paintings. Eighth grade students also focused on shading and mark making, while the seventh grade students worked on a multicultural face project with multiple mediums. Students are always encouraged to submit work to the Hazleton Art League’s Art Youth Expo. This past year, Bobby Orbin ’24 won a first-place award for a photography project while Bria Kringe ’24 won second for her Gelli print.

In-kind art donations were received from John and Jennifer Boland who gifted the school a painting of the Coxe Coal Company by artist Valfred Thelin. Emil Daniels gave MMI a large framed Rembrandt print in memory of Anne D. Goranitis.

Thanks to your generosity, MMI is continually able to upgrade and increase our art supplies to encourage further experimentation in areas such as painting, fiber arts, mixed media, photography, and metal works.

Jillian McGeehin ’23 and Erica Kline ’23, both in their final year at MMI, welcomed students back to campus on the first day of school!

Lifetime giving of $100,000 or more is required for recognition in MMI’s most prestigious donor society.

The Black Diamond Society was created in 2012 to honor those individuals and organizations who have generously supported MMI Preparatory School throughout the years. It is MMI’s most prestigious donor society and includes benefactors whose lifetime giving to MMI surpasses the $100,000 mark. There are currently 55 members of the Black Diamond Society, and we welcome the four additions who joined this society through their philanthropy over the past year!

A great part of our MMI legacy revolves around what was called “black diamond,” or anthracite coal. Black diamonds burn the most steadily, cleanly, and longest of all coal. The black diamond was the most treasured type of coal, just like the members of the Black Diamond Society at MMI are our most respected donors.

Through the Black Diamond Society, the school honors the leadership and extraordinary support of these individuals and organizations who provide a foundation of financial support for both the current and the future student body at MMI.

The MMI Grandparents’ Club

The Grandparents’ Club was created in 2012 to pay tribute to MMI past grandparents, grandparents, and great-grandparents who invest in the education of their grandchildren every year with a minimum gift of $100 to the Annual Fund. Through the Grandparents’ Club, the school honors those who carry on the tradition of supporting MMI’s Four Pillars of Excellence. It is one of the things we proudly pass on from generation to generation!

ANNUAL DONOR REPORT – GIFTS RECEIVED JULY 2021 - JUNE 202228

The MMI Planned Giving Society

The Timber Society is an organization of individuals committed to the future support of MMI Preparatory School. The name of the society is derived from the wooden supports that were used in the deep mines to support the roof, as well as the earth above it. The timbers allowed the miners to move forward in their quest of anthracite coal as they earned a living and fueled the industrial revolution.

The symbol for the Timber Society is the White Oak (Quercus alba), which is native to the eastern United States and was harvested for use as timbers in the mines. At maturity, it can reach 100 feet in height and is a wide-spreading specimen whose leaves turn rich purple and wine in the autumn.

The large tree provides shade and beauty as it grows. The timbers permitted the deep mines to be used to extract the anthracite coal from its beds deep below the surface. The timbers continued to serve the people above, long after the miners completed their work.

The Timber Society recognizes individuals who have so thoughtfully and generously provided for MMI’s financial future through planned gifts. Through their foresight, they will continue to support the work being done by MMI well into the future.
