Greetings from Freeland! As I write this letter for our annual report, I am reflecting on MMI’s 129th Commencement Exercises held this past May. At Commencement we celebrated the remarkable achievements of the MMI Class of 2021 and sent them off to do even more remarkable things in their bright futures. It was a great and inspiring night! Notwithstanding the pandemic and all the challenges it has brought, it was noted that evening that the graduates of the Class of 2021 were the beneficiaries of a full year of in-person instruction, and departed MMI every bit as well prepared for their futures as their predecessors. In my view, at no time in MMI’s long history has an independent school option been more important to local students than it was in 2020-2021. While other students in our area experienced a mostly virtual learning experience, our students were able to go to school, see their friends, connect in person with educators who know and care about them, and receive the benefits of a full year in the classrooms. On behalf of the Board of Directors, I want to recognize and congratulate Mr. Kleinheider, the MMI staff, and the MMI faculty for courageously and steadfastly keeping MMI open for the year. Through their planning, diligence, attention to detail, and hard work, they were able to make the year a meaningful and safe one for our students. But it could not have been done without you — our dedicated supporters! Because of your generous financial support, we have been able to continue to provide the MMI experience to those who value quality education, even under difficult circumstances. On behalf of the Board of Directors and the entire MMI family, I extend my deep gratitude and thanks for your loyal and generous support of MMI. Dear MMI Family, A year ago, as an MMI family, we attempted what seemed like an insurmountable task to simply have inperson school. We never wavered on our commitment to preparing students for life every day, even during some of the darkest days of the pandemic we were still in person connecting with our students. Our faculty and staff along with students and their families partnered to prove the grit and determination that has been part of MMI for more than 140 years. Our faculty livestreamed every class and navigated a dizzying array of protocols to not only instruct but to guide and mentor students through the most challenging period of all our lives. After the year was over, and we all had a chance to reflect, what struck me was the importance of friendship. We rely on our friends for strength, for commitment, and just a kind shoulder. Many of you provided that friendship over long distances with your long-standing commitment to MMI. Our red brick school building has a special kind of magic. Your friendship was something that kept our spirits up, made classrooms a bit brighter, and made our time together feel more special. We could all focus on education with your support, especially in the most challenging moments. We learned so much in the last year about ourselves and the teacher/student relationship. What we know now is that we are ready for every twist and turn the next year can throw at us. Not just because of how we have been steeled by experience but also bolstered by your friendship. Our future is secure, and as we embark on a strategic design process, we will begin a new journey into a new chapter for MMI. DID YOU KNOW? Through the generosity of our alumni, parents and MMI’s extended community, this past year’s Annual Fund raised $1,369,479 in support of school programs and operations from 543 donors. Thank you! ●
First-time donors generated $16,406 in Annual Fund revenue stemming from 40 donors.

The average gift made by individual donors to the unrestricted portion of MMI’s Annual Fund was $658!

Annual giving to MMI’s Endowed Scholarships and Funds reached $107,670 last year, an increase of nearly $50,000 from the year prior. This included the first gift to establish The Harry Carl Schaub J.D. ’46 Endowed Scholarship.

The Black Diamond Society was founded in August of 2012, honoring lifetime giving of $100,000 or more. It is MMI’s most prestigious donor society. There are now 51 members of this society who have continuously invested in MMI. Their commitment to our School has been unparalleled and we are grateful for their continued support!

MMI currently has 1,938 living alumni and their donations comprised $279,369 of the Annual Fund.

MMI’s senior-most alumni continue to support their alma-mater. Gifts from James Sharp ‘42, Karl Bierley ‘46, Atty. Eugene Feingold ‘46, Harry Carl Schaub ‘46, Dr. Thomas G. Gabuzda ‘47, Joseph Michel ‘48, and Stephen J. Mischissin ‘48 illustrate a never-ending dedication to MMI, which is a tribute to the quality of the education that our School has provided for decades.

The Class of 1995 raised the most money with $82,740 in gifts while the Class of 1992 ranked second with $56,970 in gifts. Also, above the $20,000 giving threshold were the Class of 1946 ($26,325), Class of 1958 ($29,525), and Class of 1976 ($28,518).

The Class of 1995 had the most donors with 13 while the Class of 1960 had 12 donors.

The Class of 1954 had 63% alumni participation in the Annual Fund to lead the way. The Classes of 1946 and 1955 had 60% and 54% participation rates respectively. The Class of 1962 tallied a 50% participation rate in the Annual Fund.
●
MMI alumni participation in the Annual Fund was 16%. The average alumni participation nationally in schools that are members of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) is 7.9%.
●
MMI’s planned giving society is The Timber Society, an organization of individuals committed to the future support of MMI. This past year, MMI received two additional commitments to planned gifts as our alumni and friends have embraced planned giving as a mechanism to support the school with gifts to our endowment. Additional bequests totaling $438,730 were left to MMI’s endowment from Thomas Asson ’50, Robert Jones ’48, and Edward Sharpe ’36.

Area businesses donating to MMI need-based scholarships through Pennsylvania’s two tax credit programs (EITC and OSTC) gave $121,702 this past year! Our scholarship program has received in excess of $4 million since the state program’s inception in 2005.

The Grandparents’ Club was formed in 2011 to pay tribute to MMI grandparents and great-grandparents who invest in the education of their grandchildren every year with a minimum gift of $100 to the Annual Fund. There are currently 29 members of this group.

HOW YOUR DONATIONS IMPACT MMI Your gifts to the Annual Fund support every aspect of school life. The generous contributions of the MMI community resulted in a 2020-2021 Annual Fund Campaign that raised a total of $1,369,479. Faculty professional development, student financial aid, academic materials and supplies, athletic team equipment, emergency COVID-19 funding for families, and music and art supplies are just some of the ways your dollars went to work immediately on the MMI campus last year.
Financial Assistance A strong financial assistance program ensures that all MMI families are able to enjoy the benefits of our school community regardless of their ability to pay. Every MMI family invests in their children’s education to the extent that they are able and over 53.8% of our students receive financial assistance. Gifts in 2020-2021 to Endowed Funds totaled $107,670 and additional bequests totaling $438,730 were left to MMI’s endowment. Gifts to Annual Scholarship Funds amounted to $30,608. Monies donated by both individuals and area businesses to our scholarship program through The Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program (EITC) and The Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit Program (OSTC) totaled $121,702. MMI also continues to offer a limited number of work-study grants. These work-study grants are awarded based on need, scholarship, and citizenship to continuing students in grades 9-12. Students in the work-study program perform various tasks on school property during the summer months, including working in the coal bin and performing summer cleaning and groundskeeping. MMI’s 142nd anniversary was celebrated as our community stood up for MMI students with Day of Giving gifts to The Scholarship Fund. All in all, the MMI family came together to raise $30,607 from 125 total donors on Friday, May 7, 2021! A special thank you to Bryn Mawr Trust who offered $10,000 in matching gift dollars, and thank you to our anonymous supporter who pledged $2,000 when we hit the 125-donor mark.

Professional Development Meaningful professional development opportunities equip MMI’s faculty with the tools necessary to offer the best possible education to every student. Attendance at both virtual and in-person conferences in 2020-2021 was supported by gifts to the Annual Fund and led to professional growth across our faculty, staff, and administration. MMI’s Dean of Students, Lisa Ferry, began her studies towards her Doctorate of Education in Educational Leadership at Wilkes University while Science Department Chair Michael Mele is continuing his Doctorate studies in Teaching, Learning & Technology at Lehigh University.
Facility, Classroom & Technology Improvements To enhance learning for our students, your gifts contributed to investments in the school’s overall operation, facility and classroom upgrades, and technology and classroom resources, which continually better our academic and co-curricular programs. ●
Thanks to the generosity of Dr. Philip A. McHale ‘58 and Ms. Linda Tishko, the MMI Makerspace underwent a year-long upgrade. Equipment purchases included a Shark tabletop CNC machine, a filament recycler for MMI’s 3D printers, a hand-held nailer and router, a classroom set of rechargeable batteries and chargers, printing filament and supplies, and three new HERO9 GoPro cameras for the science and arts department along with head mounts and chest mounts.

An Annual Fund donation from the ExxonMobil Foundation thru Onvo (formerly Liberty Petroleum Distributors) purchased six Circuit Scribe drawing pens and additional refills. The Circuit Scribe conductive ink pen, which contains actual liquid silver, offers instructors an innovative way of teaching how electricity and electronics work and gives students an immersive, hands-on science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) experience.

An anonymous donor allowed MMI to purchase a set of indoor grow lights for Mrs. Amanda Shonk Johnson’s room to grow seedlings. Her mid-school STEM classes will use the growing plants for data collection, analysis, and graphing units. These three units help lead to the introduction of the basis of the scientific method and how to write a lab report in preparation for the end-of-year science fair.

With an Annual Fund gift from an anonymous donor, MMI purchased a collection of pelts and furs for the science department. The school’s animal pelt collection now includes furs from a: whitetail deer, fisher cat, raccoon, striped skunk, red fox, gray fox, beaver, bobcat, ermine, long tailed weasel, and mink. These hands-on teaching aids will allow students to look at differences in hair structure and density with respect to latitude or elevation changes. Coloration of the pelts is also studied with respect to evolution, and fur mass comparisons can be related to temperature profiles. For the Envirothon competition, pelts are used for identification and evolutionary process studies.

Mr. John Hersker ’76 supported all MMI faculty by funding the purchase of a 27-inch thermal laminator which has been a faculty wish list item for a number of years. Adding a laminator to MMI’s teachers’ arsenal will help accommodate students with different learning styles who may be more visual learners.

In Mr. Michael Mele’s room, MMI was able to add three sets of adjustable-volume digital micropipettes in different sizes. With upgrades in lab equipment such as a new PCR, thermocycler and spectrophotometer digital pipettes allow for the students to ensure increased accuracy, reduced force, and a lower risk of cross-contamination when measuring samples. The purchase of the pipettes was funded by Mr. Richard Abrams ’88 and Mr. Sean McGraw, in memory of his father Dr. Thomas McGraw ‘52.

Three classrooms had chalkboards converted to whiteboards and all classroom technology was serviced and tested this summer.

Subscription resources and technology that continue to be made available to our community include:
AFG Pension Administration and Mr. and Mrs. Donald Williamson made a restricted gift to MMI to benefit the science department. The funds were used to purchase three electronic balances and two magnetic stirring hot plates for both the Chemistry and Biology labs. The MMI maintenance team and our summer work study students accomplished a thorough cleaning of the entire facility, inside and out. Classroom 113 was also converted into a new faculty lounge and a kitchenette was installed.

Athletics Physical education and athletics are an important part of every MMI student’s education. Annual Fund gifts foster the good sport in every MMI student by supporting their athletic development through the offerings of 17 teams across the grades. MMI offers 12 teams that compete at the Varsity level along with five mid-school offerings. Funds from The Benjamin J. Turri Athletic Endowment Fund of the Luzerne Foundation were used to purchase new weight room equipment including a new multi-station all-in-one weight lifting system. The softball program was able to purchase travelling hitting tees and pop-up nets and the baseball team will add a new pitching machine thanks to monies from the Warner Endowed Fund for Baseball and Softball.

Performing Arts Program Contributions to the Annual Fund support the performing arts at MMI. Despite a challenging year for the music program as we adapted to pandemic-related protocols, MMI continued to thrive with new and innovative ways to bring music to the school. Purchases such as drum kits, xylophones, ukuleles, rainsticks, cowbells, windchimes, and tambourines allowed hands-on percussion experiences for our mid schoolers. The Upper School Drama Club presented their annual “Another Evening of One Acts-Pandemic Style”, with a filmed production of “Help Desk”, a play by Don Zolidis. This virtual project involved 25 MMI students. The Barbara L. Sowers and Joseph A. Turri ’45 Music, Drama and Fine Arts Endowed Fund of the Luzerne Foundation provided funding to the Upper School Drama Club for the purchase of a digital camera and accessories as well as light rings which enabled the Prepper Playhouse to put on their virtual production. Additional monies from this fund were used to purchase many of the new percussion instruments, too.
MMI’s Prepper Playhouse filmed their annual One Acts last year since an in-person performance was not possible.
Fine Arts Program Your gifts inspire the creativity in every MMI student by supporting our art program. This past year, many new projects and innovative 3-D projects were introduced across the art curriculum. Advanced Art students created mural umbrellas to be hung on the Coxe Commons ceiling. These upper-level students also built their own digital portfolio via a website, professionally photographed their work for the site, and worked on Shadows & Lines, a Ghost Photo Shoot, and Masking Tape Shoes. Seventh graders worked on nature color wheels while the eighth grade worked on oil pastel “Trees in Motion” and “Under the Sea Zentangles.” Ninth grade students contour drew “Shoes” and made coffee cups and napkin notes. Sophomores worked on scratch art as well as Basquiat-style self-portraits and expanded their photography skills with Photoshop. Thanks to your generosity, MMI is continually able to upgrade and increase our art supplies to encourage further experimentation in areas such as painting, fiber arts, mixed media, photography, and metal works. MMI’s seventh graders worked on African animal mixed media projects.

Lifetime giving of $100,000 or more is required for recognition in MMI’s most prestigious donor society. The Black Diamond Society was created in 2012 to honor those individuals and organizations who have generously supported MMI Preparatory School throughout the years. It is MMI’s most prestigious donor society and includes benefactors whose lifetime giving to MMI surpasses the $100,000 mark. There are currently 51 members of the Black Diamond Society and we welcome the four additions that joined this society in the past year. A great part of our MMI legacy revolves around the “black diamond” or anthracite coal. Black diamonds burn the most steadily, cleanly, and longest of all coal. The black diamond was the most treasured type of coal, just like the members of the Black Diamond Society at MMI are our most respected donors. Through the Black Diamond Society, the school honors the leadership and extraordinary support of these individuals and organizations who provide a foundation of financial support for both the current and the future student body at MMI.

The MMI Planned Giving Society The Timber Society is an organization of individuals committed to the future support of MMI Preparatory School. The name of the society is derived from the wooden supports that were used in the deep mines to support the roof, as well as the earth above it. The “timbers” allowed the miners to move forward in their quest of anthracite coal as they earned a living and fueled the industrial revolution. The symbol for the Timber Society is the White Oak (Quercus alba), which is native to the eastern United States and was harvested for use as “timbers in the mines.” At maturity, it can reach 100 feet in height and is a wide-spreading specimen whose leaves turn rich purple and wine in the autumn. The large tree provides shade and beauty as it grows. The “timbers” permitted the deep mines to be used to extract the anthracite coal from its beds deep below the surface. The “timbers” continued to serve the people above, long after the miners completed their work. The Timber Society recognizes individuals who have so thoughtfully and generously provided for MMI’s financial future through planned gifts.
