Dear Friends, I am writing this letter to you on the first day of September, exactly one week before the start of the 2020-2021 school year. Anticipation is high! MMI has been working for this day for many months, focused on getting MMI’s students back into the classroom for the in-person instruction that is so very important to them. To say that we face uncertainties in the months ahead is quite an understatement. Thanks to innovative planning by Mr. Kleinheider and his COVID response team, the hard work of the MMI staff, and the preparation by and flexibility of our faculty, MMI stands ready to provide a world class education program this year regardless of what comes our way. Thanks to the generous financial support of the individuals and businesses named in this report, we have been able to provide an affordable MMI education to interested students and to provide scholarships to students for whom MMI would otherwise be out of reach. I am particularly grateful for the extra donations that MMI has received to help our families that are facing additional challenges as a result of the pandemic. MMI will need your continued help in the months ahead. We have incurred additional expenses in order to offer inperson instruction while simultaneously preparing contingency plans for alternative and quality instruction methods should the need arise. Our scholarship funds are challenged to keep up. Some of our loyal donors, because of the economic impact of the pandemic, will not be able to support us at the levels they have before. At the same time, MMI’s presence in our community as an educational option has never been more important. On behalf of the Board of Directors and the entire MMI family, I extend my deep gratitude and thanks for your loyal and generous support of MMI at this very important time in the history of our school and our society. Head of School Dear MMI Family, By the time you read this message MMI’s first day of school will be behind us. Culturally the start of the school year has become a hallmark of the passage of time met with anticipation, excitement, and renewal. This year the world views the first day of school with a new pair of glasses, one tinted with the insight and trepidation of a global pandemic. There were many questions and discussions leading up to this school year speculating how exactly school would look for students, faculty, and staff. In the spring we finished the last quarter of the academic year virtually. Our students, faculty, and staff, with little time to prepare for a 180-degree turn in education methods, performed remarkably. Myself, and the entire MMI community, are very proud of the resilience, flexibility, and creativity displayed by all. In rapidly changing times, MMI was able to express acute nimbleness in order to complete our mission of providing a high-quality education to our students as we have done so for over 140 years. It was no small feat that MMI returned to a five-day, in-person school schedule this fall. Our success during this unprecedented year is in no small part thanks to our many generous donors like you. With guidelines for a safe school year changing by the day, we are so grateful to have your support as we navigate through every new challenge placed before us. Although “social distancing” may have us physically separated, it heartens us all to have friends like you with us on this journey into this unknown. We will need your support more than ever this year to keep the spirit of our traditions and progress toward the future alive and well. Through the generosity of our alumni, parents, and MMI’s extended community, this past year’s Annual Fund raised $848,470 in support of school programs and operations from 605 donors. We are really proud of our annual fund! F irst-time donors generated $26,303 in annual fund revenue stemming from 68 donors. T he average gift made by individual donors to the unrestricted portion of MMI’s Annual Fund was $430. A nnual giving to MMI’s Endowed Scholarships and Funds reached $66,982 last year. T he Black Diamond Society was founded in August of 2012, honoring lifetime giving of $100,000 or more. It is MMI’s most prestigious donor society. There are now 47 members of this society who have continuously invested in MMI. Their commitment to our school has been unparalleled and we are grateful for their continued support! M MI currently has 1,930 living alumni and their donations comprised $136,544 of the Annual Fund. M MI received over $22,253 in gifts-in-kind last year! M MI’s senior-most alumni continue to support their almamater. Gifts from people like Angelo Roman ’39, James Sharp ’42, Pasquale DiSpirito ’44, Karl Bierley ’46, Atty. Eugene Feingold ’46, Atty. Harry Carl Schaub ’46, Robert Best ’47, Dr. Thomas Gabuzda ’47, and Joseph Michel ‘48 illustrate a neverending dedication to MMI which is a tribute to the quality of the education that our school has provided over the last 140 years. T he Class of 1995 raised the most money with $76,950 in gifts. Also, above the $10,000 giving threshold were the Class of 1992 ($47,411), Class of 1958 ($25,250), Class of 1976 ($23,596), and the Class of 1962 ($14,600).
T he Class of 1995 had 100% alumni participation in the annual fund in honor of their 25th reunion year. The Classes of 1958 and 1963 each had a 47% participation rate while the Class of 1955 had a 46% participation rate. Classes of 1954 and 1962 tallied a 44% participation rate in the Annual Fund. M MI alumni participation in the Annual Fund was 14%. The average alumni participation nationally in schools that are members of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) is 9.8%. D onations in excess of $10,000 sponsored two programs at MMI last year. The Future Business Leader’s of America program was sponsored by Flashback Cinema. Our annual Open House program was sponsored by State Street. When that event was postponed, State Street transitioned their gift to direct Annual Fund support. Thank you! M MI’s planned giving society is The Timber Society, an organization of individuals committed to the future support of MMI. This past year, MMI received two additional commitments to planned gifts as our alumni and friends have embraced planned giving as a mechanism to support the school with gifts to our endowment. MMI also received a $35,000 bequest that was designated to The Martin J. O’Donnell ’37 Endowed Scholarship. A rea businesses donating to MMI need-based scholarships through Pennsylvania’s two tax credit programs (EITC and OSTC) gave $146,552 this past year! Our scholarship program has received in excess of $4 million since the state program’s inception in 2005. T he Grandparents’ Club was formed in 2011 to pay tribute to MMI grandparents and great grandparents who invest in the education of their grandchildren every year with a minimum gift of $100 to the Annual Fund. There are currently 31 members of this society.

impact MMI
Your gifts to the Annual Fund support every aspect of school life. The generous contributions of the MMI community resulted in a 2019-20 Annual Fund Campaign that raised a total of $848,470. Faculty professional development, student financial aid, academic materials and supplies, field trips, athletic team equipment, and music and art supplies are just some of the ways your dollars go to work immediately and reach every corner of the MMI campus.
Financial assistance A strong financial assistance program ensures that all MMI families are able to enjoy the benefits of our school community regardless of their ability to pay. Every MMI family invests in their children’s education to the extent that they are able and over 55.5% of our students receive financial aid. Gifts in 2019-20 to Endowed Scholarship Funds totaled $66,982 and an additional bequest of $35,000 was left to The Martin J. O’Donnell ’37 Endowed Scholarship. Gifts to Annual Scholarship Funds amounted to $30,146. Monies donated from area businesses to our scholarship program through The Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program (EITC) and The Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit Program (OSTC) totaled $146,552. MMI also continues to offer a limited number of work-study grants. These work-study grants are awarded based on need, scholarship, and citizenship to continuing students in grades 9-12. Students in the work-study program perform various tasks on school property during the summer months, including working in the coal bin and performing summer cleaning and groundskeeping.

Fine arts program Your gifts inspire the creativity in every MMI student by supporting our art program, which stimulates the growth of artistic perception, creative expression, aesthetics, and cultural awareness. This past year, many new projects were introduced across the art program along with innovative projects online as we transitioned to virtual learning. Advanced Art 1&2, through online lessons, learned to create landscape art by recycling household cardboard into 3-D art. These upper-level students also built their own digital portfolio via a website. Ninth graders made detailed mandalas, eighth graders explored social justice issues in Keith Haring style, and tenth graders expanded their painting techniques with art referencing Ruscha. Thanks to your generosity, MMI is continually able to upgrade and increase our art supplies to encourage further experimentation in areas such as painting, fiber arts, mixed media, photography, and metal works. Funds from The Barbara L. Sowers and Joseph A. Turri ’45 Music, Drama, and Fine Arts Endowed Fund of the Luzerne Foundation purchased art supplies and a portable drying rack for the program. Seventh grade students worked on pointillism projects highlighting endangered species this past year.

Professional development
Meaningful professional development opportunities equip MMI’s faculty with the tools necessary to offer the best possible education to every student. Attendance at numerous conferences in 2019-20 was supported by gifts to the Annual Fund and led to professional growth across our faculty, staff, and administration.
This summer the entire MMI Faculty completed the Online Learning Master Course for Grades 6-12 by Adaptable Learning. This program focused on how to prepare for flexible learning environments (in-person, blended or hybrid, and online). The skills of adaptable instruction and assessment will be beneficial to all of our faculty as we transition into the 2020-21 academic year. Performing arts Contributions to the Annual Fund support the performing arts at MMI. This past year MMI’s Chamber String Ensemble performed at the Annual CANDO Community Christmas Concert in Hazleton. Additionally, chorus and string students lent their talents to the Freeland Presbyterian Church Carol Fest. One senior student earned a coveted seat in the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) District 9 Orchestra Festival and District Band Festival.
During the fall theatre season at MMI, the Upper School Drama Club welcomed eighth graders on stage for the first time. Their production, “An Evening of One Act Comedies V” was presented on the cafetorium stage. The student actors reveled in playing multiple roles in three short and funny plays. The student technical crew was put to the test as they created scenery, lighting design, sound effects, and special effects for the production. In the spring, unfortunately the Prepper Playhouse performance of Willy Wonka was cancelled.
The Gaudio family made a generous annual fund donation to expand our musical instrument inventory. This gift was made in memory of MMI alum, Robert Gaudio ’54, who passed away in 2019. With this gift, MMI was able to purchase new sheet music and percussion instruments including a steel drum, bells, claves, ukuleles, and bongos. To further enhance the effectiveness of the performance music program, The Barbara L. Sowers and Joseph A. Turri ’45 Music, Drama, and Fine Arts Endowed Fund of the Luzerne Foundation funded the purchase of a 3/4 violin, four 4/4 violins, and a cello for student classroom use.

Turri ’45 Music, Drama, and Fine Arts Endowed Fund of the Luzerne Foundation provided funding to the Upper School Drama Club for the purchase of a portable backdrop, additional lights and light controllers for our stage productions, and new software for our music recording and production. An additional gift by a loyal annual fund donor allowed for the purchase of wireless microphones and transmitters for student performers and was also used to assist with licensing, musical rights, script rental, and costume rental costs.

Athletics Physical education and athletics is an important part of every MMI student’s education. Physical education and athletics is an important part of every MMI student’s education. Annual Fund gifts foster the good sport in every MMI student by supporting their athletic development through the offerings of 17 teams across the grades. MMI offers 12 teams that compete at the Varsity level along with five mid-school offerings. Funds from The Benjamin J. Turri Athletic Endowment Fund of the Luzerne Foundation were used this year to add two new treadmills and a new elliptical to the MMI weight room for use by our athletes as well as physical education classes.

THE MMI BLACK DIAMOND SOCIETY Lifetime giving of $100,000 or more is required for recognition in MMI’s most prestigious donor society. The Black Diamond Society was created in 2012 to honor those individuals and organizations who have generously supported MMI Preparatory School throughout the years. It is MMI’s most prestigious donor society and includes benefactors whose lifetime giving to MMI surpasses the $100,000 mark. There are currently 47 members of the Black Diamond Society. A great part of our MMI legacy revolves around the “black diamond” or anthracite coal. Black Diamonds burn the most steadily, cleanly, and longest of all coal. The Black Diamond was the most treasured type of coal, just like the members of the Black Diamond Society at MMI are our most respected donors. THE MMI PLANNED GIVING SOCIETY The Timber Society is an organization of individuals committed to the future support of MMI Preparatory School. The name of the society is derived from the wooden supports that were used in the deep mines to support the roof, as well as the earth above it. The “timbers” allowed the miners to move forward in their quest of anthracite coal as they earned a living and fueled the industrial revolution. The symbol for the Timber Society is the White Oak (Quercus alba), which is native to the eastern United States and was harvested for use as “timbers.” At maturity it can reach 100 feet in height and is a wide-spreading specimen whose leaves turn rich purple and wine in the autumn. The large tree provides shade and beauty as it grows. The “timbers” permitted the deep mines to be used to extract the anthracite coal from its beds deep below the surface. The “timbers” continued to serve the people above, long after the miners completed their work. The Timber Society recognizes individuals who have so thoughtfully and generously provided for MMI’s financial future through planned gifts.
