Dear Friends of MMI, The start of every academic year marks a new beginning for the MMI family. That is especially true this year as we welcome Mr. Justin Kleinheider as our new Head of School. Mr. Kleinheider’s appointment by the Board of Directors in May was the culmination of an extensive search that included a number of qualified candidates. The Board was committed to finding a new Head of School with integrity, academic experience, a strong work ethic, and an appreciation for our school’s historic mission and unique place in the community. We are excited to have found in Mr. Kleinheider the right person for the job and we welcome him, his wife, Michelle, and their two young sons, Ronan and Eliot, to the MMI family. The Kleinheiders are joining an extraordinary school community that includes a committed faculty and staff, engaged parents, and industrious students. Their success would not be possible, however, were it not for a special group of individuals and organizations that we celebrate in these pages: our donors, whose efforts are part of a long MMI tradition of service to the community. That tradition was begun by MMI’s founders, Eckley B. and Sophia G. Coxe, and the ongoing support that our donors provide is essential to the fulfillment of our mission. A crucial element of that mission is that MMI is open to students who are willing to work hard and who meet the school’s high standards, regardless of their ability to pay. Our donors make it possible for MMI to maintain a generous financial assistance program that provides aid to more than half of our students. And because full tuition is less than the cost of educating each student, annual giving helps to keep an MMI education affordable for all our students. We are deeply grateful to our donors, whose generosity touches every aspect of life at the school. Head of School Dear MMI Family, From my earliest moments here, I have enjoyed learning about the historic generosity and culture of giving of the MMI community. Eckley B. and Sophia G. Coxe set out to build a school that serves the community with a world-class education; and 140 years later, that tradition is alive and well today. Before school began, I met with faculty, students, board members, and alumni to hear their stories and to better understand how I could use my experience to help the school. Whether we were meeting in my office, at the golf outing, or Alumni Picnic, one theme consistently emerged – passion. The MMI commitment demonstrated throughout these pages rivals many top independent schools, but where MMI stands above is the care, compassion, and engagement the entire community provides with their time and talent. My family feels blessed to be part of such a vibrant community. As a student, teacher, parent, and alumnus of independent schools, I know that such schools thrive with a strong dedication to the mission of the school. MMI students and alumni are prepared for college and life because of the support provided by the community, but especially the generosity of our donors. There is no corner of the school that goes untouched by donor support. From our impressive facilities to student competitions like FBLA and Envirothon to our Prepper athletic teams to professional development for the faculty and staff, the school is enhanced and the mission is advanced every day. We are able to serve our students’ needs by teaching them not only the liberal arts but by developing soft skills needed for leadership in the 21st century. hrough the generosity of our T alumni, parents, and MMI’s extended community, this past year’s Annual Fund raised $904,407 in support of school programs and operations. This is an increase of $149,844 from the year prior! MI’s planned giving society is The M Timber Society, an organization of individuals committed to the future support of MMI. This past year, MMI received five additional commitments to planned gifts as our alumni and friends have embraced planned giving as a mechanism to support the school with gifts to our endowment. rea businesses donating to MMI need-based A scholarships through Pennsylvania’s two tax credit programs (EITC and OSTC) gave $261,000 this past year! Our scholarship program has received in excess of $3.8 million since the state program’s inception in 2005. pen House 2019 was sponsored by State Street Corporation O through an Annual Fund gift for the second consecutive year. State Street also sponsored the 2018 Wall of Fame Awards Dinner. his year’s Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) program T was sponsored by a generous Annual Fund gift from Flashback Cinema. nnual giving to MMI’s Endowed Scholarships and Funds A reached $78,025 last year, an increase of $25,488. he Black Diamond Society was founded in August of 2012, T honoring lifetime giving of $100,000 or more. It is MMI’s most prestigious donor society. There are 44 members of this society who have continuously invested in MMI. Their commitment to our school has been unparalleled and we are grateful for their continued support! MMI had 668 total donors to the Annual Fund! irst-time donors generated $22,329 in annual fund revenue F stemming from 106 donors. he average gift made by individual donors to the unrestricted T portion of MMI’s Annual Fund was $348.

MI currently has 1,952 living alumni M and their donations comprised $136,671 of the Annual Fund. MI’s senior-most alumni continue to M support their alma-mater. Gifts from people like Mr. Angelo Roman ’39 and Mr. Pasquale DiSpirito ‘44 illustrate a never-ending dedication to MMI which is a tribute to the quality of the education that our school has provided over the last 140 years. he Class of 1995 raised the most T money with $66,064 in gifts. Also above the $10,000 giving threshold were the Class of 1992 ($36,607), the Class of 1976 ($33,547), the Class of 1958 ($25,665), and the Class of 1962 ($13,755). ne new endowed fund was established this past year. O The Kurtz Family Endowed Scholarship was established by Mr. Matthew Hodge and Mrs. Maura Kurtz Hodge ‘00 to honor her family. Thank you! he alumni classes of the 1960’s led the charge in participation T in the Annual Fund. The Classes of 1962 and 1963 each had a 47% participation rate while the Class of 1955 tallied a 46% participation rate. The Class of 1958 had a 41% participation rate in the annual fund while the Class of 1959 was at 36% and the Classes of 1950, 1954, and 1993 all registered a 33% participation rate. Alumni participation as a whole was at 16%. MMI’s alumni participation in the Annual Fund ranks ahead of the National Association of Independent School average for all schools (9.1%), day schools (8.6%), schools with an enrollment between 200-300 students (6.6%), and schools in the MidAtlantic Region (11.2%). MMI received more than $27,029 in gifts-in-kind last year! he Grandparents’ Club was formed in 2011 to pay tribute to T MMI grandparents and great-grandparents who invest in the education of their grandchildren every year with a minimum gift of $100 to the Annual Fund. There are currently 26 members of this group.

Your gifts to the Annual Fund support every aspect of school life. The generous contributions of the MMI community resulted in a very successful Annual Fund Campaign in 2018-19, raising a total of $904,407. Faculty professional development, student financial aid, academic materials and supplies, field trips, athletic team equipment, and music and art supplies are just some of the ways your dollars go to work immediately and reach every corner of the MMI campus.

Financial assistance A strong financial assistance program ensures that all MMI families are able to enjoy the benefits of our school community regardless of their ability to pay. Every MMI family invests in their children’s education to the extent that they are able and more than 52.3% of our students receive financial aid. Gifts in 2018-19 to Endowed Scholarship Funds totaled $78,025 while gifts to Annual Scholarship Funds amounted to $35,116. Monies donated from area businesses to our scholarship program through The Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program (EITC) and The Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit Program (OSTC) totaled $261,000.

Meaningful professional development opportunities equip our leaders with the tools necessary to offer the best possible education to every MMI student. Attendance at numerous conferences in 2018-19 was supported by gifts to the Annual Fund and led to professional growth across our faculty, staff, and administration. Facility, classroom, and technology improvements To enhance learning for our students, your gifts contributed to investments in the school’s overall operation, facility and classroom upgrades, emerging technology, and classroom resources, which continually better our academic and co-curricular programs.

• The Class of 2019 and the MMI Parents Association have pooled their donated funds from 2018-19 to help with an upgrade to the Coxe Commons.

•N aviance (a college planning software to assist students with the college search) •Q uizlet (teachers and students can create online flash cards and complete quizzes to enhance learning)

• The MMI maintenance team and our summer student workers accomplished a thorough cleaning of the entire facility, inside and out. Additionally, the MMI parking lot pavement cracks were sealed and the main basketball basket on the Centre Street side of the gymnasium was motorized.

• New security upgrades were made to the windows at MMI’s exterior access points and to the Coxe Commons doors.

•T urnitin.com (an anti-plagiarism service that improves the student writing cycle).

• New Wireless Internet Access points were installed throughout the building.

• A new digital VoIP telephone system was installed allowing faculty members to have individual voice mailboxes allowing for better communication with parents and students. • Two new school vans were leased for use by our faculty and students for field trips and coaches and athletes for competition and practice transportation. • A new Harkness table and chairs were installed in The Joseph A. Turri ’45 Library and Learning Center through a gift from the Turri Library Endowed Fund of the Luzerne Foundation. • Two classrooms in the Old Main section of the building were outfitted with new desks and chairs. • Subscription resources that continue to be made available to our community include: • Canvas (MMI’s Learning Management System which allows the teachers to interact with students and post class announcements, homework, projects, and assessment results) • Discovery Education (access to a wide range of Discovery Channel resources)

Art program Your gifts inspire the creativity in every MMI student by supporting our art program, which stimulates the growth of artistic perception, creative expression, aesthetics, and cultural awareness. This past year, many new projects were introduced across the art program. Advanced Art 1 & 2 learned the entire process of traditional screenprinting, built their own digital portfolio via a website, and expanded their ceramic techniques. Ninth graders made digital art, eighth graders explored social justice issues, and tenth graders experimented with pinhole cameras and darkroom photography. Thanks to your generosity, MMI is continually able to upgrade and increase our art supplies.

Art students have been experimenting with ceramics, fiber arts, mixed media, photography, and screen-printing.

Performing arts Your contributions cultivate our students’ talents by supporting the various performing arts at MMI. In addition to performances at school, MMI’s instrumental students perform annually at The CAN DO Community Christmas concert, and instrumental and vocal students take part in the Freeland Christmas Carol Songfest. Individual students qualified through auditioning and participated in the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association’s (PMEA) District 9 Orchestra, District 9 Chorus, and Region IV Orchestra Festivals, with one student in each event advancing to the PMEA Region IV Band & Orchestra Festivals. The middle school students were afforded the opportunity to participate in PMEA String Fest, PMEA Band Fest, PMEA Jazz Fest, and Chorus Fest to cultivate their talents. To further enhance the effectiveness of the performance music program, The Barbara L. Sowers and Joseph A. Turri ’45 Music, Drama, and Fine Arts Endowed Fund of the Luzerne Foundation funded the purchase of several violins, violas, cellos, and shoulder rests for student classroom use.

The students were provided an opportunity to work with the worldfamous Wister Quartet in the fall for a composition workshop and to perform with them at the Annual Spring Concert, both in school and for the public. Our students have been performing with the Quartet since 2004. This was the 15th consecutive year that the Wister Quartet’s visits have been funded by donations to the Annual Fund. During the fall theatre season at MMI, the Upper School Drama Club presented “An Evening of One Act Comedies IV” on the cafeteria stage. In the spring, audiences were entertained by the MMI Prepper Playhouse all-school production of “The New Mel Brooks Musical, Young Frankenstein.” The purchase of the rights to these shows and script rental was made possible by the generous support of an annual fund donor.

This past school year, MMI’s Upper School Drama Club performed “An Evening of One Act Comedies IV” and the all-school MMI Prepper Playhouse presented “The New Mel Brooks Musical, Young Frankenstein.”

Athletics

MMI offers a variety of sports at the varsity and mid-school levels, including soccer, golf, and tennis.

Physical education and athletics is an important part of every MMI student’s education. Annual Fund gifts foster the good sport in every MMI student by supporting their athletic development through the offerings of 17 teams across the grades. We currently have 12 teams compete at the Varsity level along with five mid-school offerings. The Annual Jake Kislan ’56 Memorial Golf Tournament raises money every June to directly help the athletics program and to support a scholarship in Jake Kislan’s name.

THE MMI BLACK DIAMOND SOCIETY Lifetime giving of $100,000 or more is required for recognition in MMI’s most prestigious donor society. The Black Diamond Society was created in 2012 to honor those individuals and organizations who have generously supported MMI Preparatory School throughout the years. It is MMI’s most prestigious donor society and includes benefactors whose lifetime giving to MMI surpasses the $100,000 mark. There are currently 44 members of the Black Diamond Society. A great part of our MMI legacy revolves around the “black diamond” or anthracite coal. Black Diamonds burn the most steadily, cleanly, and longest of all coal. The Black Diamond was the most treasured type of coal, just like the members of the Black Diamond Society at MMI are our most respected donors. THE MMI PLANNED GIVING SOCIETY The Timber Society is an organization of individuals committed to the future support of MMI Preparatory School. The name of the society is derived from the wooden supports that were used in the deep mines to support the roof, as well as the earth above it. The “timbers” allowed the miners to move forward in their quest of anthracite coal as they earned a living and fueled the industrial revolution. The symbol for the Timber Society is the White Oak (Quercus alba), which is native to the eastern United States and was harvested for use as “timbers.” At maturity it can reach 100 feet in height and is a wide-spreading specimen whose leaves turn rich purple and wine in the autumn. The large tree provides shade and beauty as it grows. The “timbers” permitted the deep mines to be used to extract the anthracite coal from its beds deep below the surface. The “timbers” continued to serve the people above, long after the miners completed their work. The Timber Society recognizes individuals who have so thoughtfully and generously provided for MMI’s financial future through planned gifts.
