Dear friends of MMI,

The success of an institution depends on the hard work and dedication of many people. MMI is fortunate to have a committed faculty and staff, engaged parents, and industrious students. In these pages we celebrate a special group of individuals and organizations: our donors, whose efforts are part of a long MMI tradition of service to the community. That tradition was begun by MMI’s founders, Eckley B. and Sophia G. Coxe, and the ongoing support that our donors provide is essential to the fulfillment of our mission. MMI has been committed to meeting the educational needs of area residents since it was founded by the Coxes 139 years ago as a night school for coal miners. While the curriculum has evolved into that of a world-class college preparatory school, a crucial element of the original mission remains: that MMI is open to students who are willing to work and who meet the school’s high standards, regardless of their ability to pay. Our donors make it possible for MMI to maintain a generous financial assistance program that provides aid to over half our students. And they help us to fund programs and improvements that benefit the student body as a whole. We are deeply grateful to our donors, whose generosity touches every aspect of life at the school, and therefore makes a positive impact on the lives of all our students. Dear MMI Family, Another school year is off to a blazing start! We welcomed students just a short time ago in late August and the school is already abuzz with noteworthy excitement and energy. Despite some of the warmest days occurring in the first weeks of the new school year, we made it through our first classes, pep rally, and Spirit Day with great enthusiasm. Students tend to be happier and enjoy school more when they encounter a positive and exciting environment. There is no question that our older students returned to school bursting with positive energy and excitement for a new year. Indeed, each year, we encourage our upper school students to lead by example, particularly our senior class. Once again, our student leaders have shown themselves to be tremendously skilled at stepping up to the plate. This was particularly so on Spirit Day (August 31), when 21 multi-grade teams were led and championed by indefatigable student leaders through a plethora of fun events that were also overseen and run by another group of energized student leaders. Spirit Day is an especially opportune time for students new to MMI, because it showcases for them what excellent student leadership and responsibility look like at our school! In this way, MMI serves as an incubator for best practices in student leadership, and the Spirit Day experience witnessed by many of our younger students will aspire them to become – in good time – the kind of Spirit Day leaders that led them so capably! The pages of this donor report are filled with examples of leadership. Whether you realize it or not, when you give to our school, an example is set that allows our student body, faculty, and staff to know a difference is being made. Each donation helps to build better learning opportunities, drives positive momentum in our athletic department, encourages students who might not otherwise be able to attend MMI to reach their full potential, and gives support to our faculty and student body building pride in our school community. Personally, I am ever grateful for the generosity of our donors and friends who see the value in developing students to not only be great leaders, but to be great citizens of this world. hrough the generosity of our alumni, parents, and MMI’s T extended community, this past year’s Annual Fund raised $754,563 in support of school programs and operations. MI’s planned giving society is The Timber Society, M an organization of individuals committed to the future support of MMI. This past year, MMI received four additional commitments to planned gifts as our alumni and friends have embraced planned giving as a mechanism to support the school with gifts to our endowment. rea businesses donating to MMI need-based A scholarships through Pennsylvania’s two tax credit programs (EITC and OSTC) gave $217,190 this past year! Our scholarship program has received in excess of $3.5 million since the state program’s inception in 2005. nnual giving to MMI’s Endowed Scholarships and Funds A has more than doubled since 2014-15, totaling $52,537 this past year. wo new endowed funds were established this past year. T The Leroy B. and Anna M. Moyer Memorial Endowed Scholarship was established by Robert and Susan Moyer in honor of his parents. This scholarship is restricted to students who attend MMI Preparatory School and reside in Carbon County. The Warner Endowed Fund for Baseball and Softball was established to support two of MMI’s spring athletic programs. MMI had 577 total donors to the Annual Fund! irst-time donors generated $27,638 in annual fund F revenue stemming from 54 donors. he average gift made by individual donors to the T unrestricted portion of MMI’s Annual Fund was $357, an increase of $100 from the average gift of the year prior. MI currently has 1,922 living alumni and their M donations comprised $209,850 of the Annual Fund.

MI’s senior-most alumni continue to support their alma M mater. Gifts from people like Mr. Angelo Roman ’39 and Mr. Clyde Bell ’43 illustrate a never-ending dedication to MMI which is a tribute to the quality of the education that our school has provided over the last 139 years. he alumni classes of the 1950’s continued to lead T the charge in participation in the Annual Fund for the fourth consecutive year. The Class of 1955 had a 54% participation rate, while the Class of 1954 tallied a participation rate of 50%. The Classes of 1962 and 1963 were at 47% and 43% participation respectively. Alumni participation as a whole was at 17%. he Class of 1995 raised the most money with $65,555 T in gifts. lso above the $10,000 giving threshold were the Class A of 1958 ($10,430) and the Class of 1976 ($24,425). The Class of 1962 gave $8,642 and the Class of 1960 tallied $8,000 in gifts. MI received more than $25,648 in gifts-in-kind last M year! he Grandparents’ Club was formed in 2011 to pay T tribute to MMI grandparents and great-grandparents who invest in the education of their grandchildren every year with a minimum gift of $100 to the Annual Fund. There are currently 27 members of this society. he Black Diamond Society was founded in August of T 2012, honoring lifetime giving of $100,000 or more. It is MMI’s most prestigious donor society. There are 44 members of this society who have continuously invested in MMI. Their commitment to our school has been unparalleled and we are grateful for their continued support!

Financial assistance A strong financial assistance program ensures that all MMI families are able to enjoy the benefits of our school community regardless of their ability to pay. Every MMI family invests in their children’s education to the extent that they are able and more than 50% of our students receive financial aid.

Gifts in 2017-18 to Endowed Scholarship Funds totaled $52,537 while gifts to Annual Scholarship Funds amounted to $33,850. Monies donated from area businesses to our scholarship program through The Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program (EITC) and The Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit Program (OSTC) totaled $217,190.

Facility, classroom, and technology improvements To enhance learning for our students, your gifts contributed to investments in the school’s overall operation, facility and classroom upgrades, emerging technology, and classroom resources, which continually better our academic and co-curricular programs.

• Liberty Petroleum of New Milford made an annual fund donation of $500 to be used toward the purchase of new equipment for the school’s science and technology department through the ExxonMobil Educational Alliance program. • Mr. Salvadore DeFazio ‘67 presented his latest sculpture, an annual fund gift-in-kind, to the school during 2017 Alumni Weekend. The sculpture honors the Class of 1967 as his classmates celebrated their 50th reunion. DeFazio explained that the sculpture has dual titles that combine the concepts of art and mathematics. In an artistic sense, the sculpture is known as Apollo’s Harp and represents Apollo, the Greek God of the sun. On the mathematics side, the sculpture carries the title of Plotting the Gravitational Waves of the Solar System and honors MMI’s history as the Mining and Mechanical Institute.

• The MMI maintenance team and our summer student workers accomplished a thorough cleaning of the entire facility, inside and out, but the largest major project undertaken was a complete refinishing of the gymnasium floor. This was the first time that the floor was completely resurfaced since the construction of the Athletic and Drama Complex. • The basement storage area underneath the Coxe Commons was emptied of much of its years’-old, massive collection of outdated electronics and office furniture.

• Dr. Thomas P.J. McGraw, D.O. ’52 was a longtime and wellrespected family practice physician who passed away on December 9, 2016. The McGraw family chose to have memorial gifts sent in 2017 to MMI which were used to purchase numerous pieces of lab equipment in his honor. This equipment includes: a Vernier LabQuest2 Physiology Package, a Galvanic Skin Response Sensor, and a Thermal Cycler which is a laboratory apparatus most commonly used to amplify segments of DNA.

• The MMI Parents Association made a capital gift following a successful year of fundraising that allowed MMI to purchase four new picnic tables for the courtyard along with 30 new eight-foot lightweight banquet tables and two rolling carts to be used at all school functions. • Numerous subscription resources continue to be made available to our community including: Canvas (MMI’s Learning Management System which allows the teachers to utilize the internet to interact with students through homework, projects, and assessments), and RenWeb and ParentsWeb (MMI’s internetbased school management system). • Dr. Thomas G. Gabuzda ‘47 and Mrs. Stella Gabuzda donated monies for MMI to purchase a micro-hematocrit centrifuge for use in the classroom. This centrifuge is being used in MMI’s Anatomy class where Faculty member Michael Mele leads the students in taking minute human blood samples or using bovine blood samples. The centrifuge will also be used for small sample fractionation in Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science (PJAS) projects, chemistry classes, and various other mid-school classes. • MMI’s literary magazine, Angst, won a Silver Award from the Pennsylvania School Press Association and was ranked as Recommended for Highest Award in the nation from the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). Angst is produced annually and features literary and visual works of art that are submitted by MMI students. This year’s edition was printed thanks to an anonymous annual fund donation.

Dr. Philip McHale ’58 and Ms. Linda Tishko designated the funds to purchase a Glowforge 3D Laser Printer (above) for MMI’s Makerspace last year. Glowforge uses a beam of light the width of a human hair to cut, engrave, and shape designs from a variety of materials.

Art program

Your gifts inspire the creativity in every MMI student by supporting our art program, which stimulates the growth of artistic perception, creative expression, aesthetics, and cultural awareness. This past year, many new projects were introduced across the art program. Advanced Art I & II learned the entire process of traditional screen printing, built their own digital portfolio via a website, and expanded their ceramic techniques. Ninth graders made digital art and explored social justice issues, while the eighth graders dove deep into mixed-media techniques. The seventh grade students worked with charcoal and pastels and sixth grade explored multiple mediums. Thanks to your generosity, MMI is continually able to upgrade and increase our art supplies to encourage further experimentation in areas such as ceramics, fiber arts, mixed media, photography, and screen-printing.

Performing arts Your contributions cultivate our students’ talents by supporting the various performing arts at MMI. In addition to performances at school, MMI’s instrumental students perform annually at The CAN DO Community Christmas Concert, and instrumental and vocal students take part in the Freeland Christmas Carol Songfest. Individual students qualified through auditioning and participated in the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association’s (PMEA) District 9 Orchestra and Band Festivals, with one student in each event advancing to the PMEA Region IV Band & Orchestra Festivals. The middle school students were afforded the opportunity to participate in String Fest, Band Fest, and Chorus Fest to cultivate their talents. Annual donations this year have enhanced the music program at MMI by purchasing musical compositions for in-class instruction, concert repertoire, a new cello rack, and additional music stands. To further enhance the effectiveness of the performance music program, The Barbara L. Sowers and Joseph A. Turri ’45 Music, Drama, and Fine Arts Endowed Fund of the Luzerne Foundation funded the purchase of several violins, violas, and cellos for student

classroom use. This donation placed new instruments in the hands of eager musicians to learn a lifelong skill. Students were again provided an opportunity to work with the worldfamous Wister Quartet in the fall for a composition workshop and to perform with them at the Annual Spring Concert, both in school and for the public. Our students have been performing with the Quartet since 2004. This was the 15th consecutive year that the Wister Quartet’s visits have been funded by a donation to the Annual Fund by Dr. James W. Feussner ’65. In addition to the two concerts, some members of our performing ensembles participated for the second year at the Advent celebration at First Presbyterian Church in Freeland. During the fall theatre season at MMI, the Upper School Drama Club presented “An Evening of One Act Comedies III” on the cafeteria stage. In the spring, audiences were entertained by the MMI Prepper Playhouse all-school production of “The Wizard of Oz”. The purchase of the rights to these shows and script rental was made possible by the generous support of John H. Hersker ’76.

MMI music instructor Tina Lizbinski served as host director and a group of MMI students attended the PMEA Region IV Stringfest the week of March 12.

Athletics Physical education and athletics is an important part of every MMI student’s education. Annual Fund gifts foster the good sport in every MMI student by supporting their athletic development through the offerings of 17 teams across the grades. We currently have 12 teams that compete at the varsity level along with five mid-school offerings. The Annual Jake Kislan ’56 Memorial Golf Tournament raises money every June to directly help the athletics program. The dual championships marked the first time in school history that the Preppers won district titles in two sports in the same year.

THE MMI BLACK DIAMOND SOCIETY Lifetime giving of $100,000 or more is required for recognition in MMI’s most prestigious donor society. The Black Diamond Society was created in 2012 to honor those individuals and organizations who have generously supported MMI Preparatory School throughout the years. It is MMI’s most prestigious donor society and includes benefactors whose lifetime giving to MMI surpasses the $100,000 mark. There are currently 44 members of the Black Diamond Society. A great part of our MMI legacy revolves around the “black diamond” or anthracite coal. Black Diamonds burn the most steadily, cleanly, and longest of all coal. The Black Diamond was the most treasured type of coal, just like the members of the Black Diamond Society at MMI are our most respected donors. THE MMI PLANNED GIVING SOCIETY The Timber Society is an organization of individuals committed to the future support of MMI Preparatory School. The name of the society is derived from the wooden supports that were used in the deep mines to support the roof, as well as the earth above it. The “timbers” allowed the miners to move forward in their quest of anthracite coal as they earned a living and fueled the industrial revolution. The symbol for the Timber Society is the White Oak (Quercus alba), which is native to the eastern United States and was harvested for use as “timbers.” At maturity it can reach 100 feet in height and is a wide-spreading specimen whose leaves turn rich purple and wine in the autumn. The large tree provides shade and beauty as it grows. The “timbers” permitted the deep mines to be used to extract the anthracite coal from its beds deep below the surface. The “timbers” continued to serve the people above, long after the miners completed their work. The Timber Society recognizes individuals who have so thoughtfully and generously provided for MMI’s financial future through planned gifts.
