Dear Friends, Greetings and best wishes to all alumni, family and friends of the MMI Preparatory Community! On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to thank you for your continued support of our school. It was a great year at the school with the many accomplishments achieved by our students and faculty. Competing in national and state level competitions from FBLA to the National Spanish Exam, PJAS, and taking the top three spots at the Regional Stock Market Challenge, just to name a few, we are proud of our accomplishments. Achievement in academics saw 31 seniors graduate with $5.9 million in merit scholarships and awards for their postgraduate educations with students being accepted to more than 90% of the colleges and universities they applied to. Congratulations to our seniors, their parents, and MMI’s terrific faculty! The hard work and dedication of our students both in and out of the classroom is stellar. Their success is dependent upon the commitment of our faculty and staff as well as the generosity and support of our donors. Students, faculty, staff, and donors work together in concert to help make the MMI experience ripe for the development of future leaders. Thank you for your continued efforts and support of MMI! Interim Head of School Dear MMI Family, I cannot begin to tell you how excited I am to be the Interim Head of School here at MMI! When I embarked on my quest to take on an Interim Headship, I was hoping to find a school that would allow me to be part of something stable, well rounded and community based. I have found that at MMI! The new school year has gotten off to a tremendous start, thanks in great measure to the energy, leadership, and commitment of our senior class. This Annual Report showcases our donors from the 2015-16 fiscal year. Given that a primary beneficiary of your support and generosity in 2015-2016 was the Class of 2016, I thought it important to mention that the members of that class were awarded just over $125,000 per student in academic and other scholarship monies from the colleges and universities to which they applied. This is a true testament to the work being done here at MMI, through the dedication of our faculty and staff, to help prepare our young people for post-secondary education. This work, of course, would not be possible without your support, and so we thank you from the bottom of our hearts! Knowing how important fund raising is to independent schools, the level of commitment by our individual donors and local, national and international foundations and business supporters is something that we can all be proud of. While we receive generous contributions through individual monetary donations, and EITC and OSTC contributions, MMI also receives donations through planned giving. I was astonished and heartened to see that this year alone, we received $1,030,000 in bequests from people who had the foresight to provide for MMI through their estates. Our endowment and Annual Fund continues to allow us to fulfill our mission by bringing students to MMI who might not otherwise be able to attend. This year, we awarded close to $955,000 in need-based financial aid to 50% of our student population. Many, if not all, of these children would have been unable to experience the great things MMI has to offer absent your support! Thank you to everyone for all of your generosity, both in your contributions to the Annual Fund and in making me feel welcome as the Interim Head of School. I look forward to the year ahead and in working toward continued support of the Annual Fund.

Unrestricted gifts to the Annual Fund support virtually every aspect of school life. Once again the generous contributions of the MMI community resulted in a highly successful Annual Fund Campaign in 2015-16, raising a total of $1,855,727 which includes more than $1 million in planned giving bequests. Faculty professional development, student financial aid, academic materials, field trips, athletic team equipment, and music and art supplies are just some of the ways your dollars go to work immediately and reach every corner of MMI’s campus.
Professional development Meaningful professional development opportunities equip our forward-minded learning community with the tools necessary to offer the best possible education for every MMI student. As part of a new initiative, all MMI faculty visited another independent school during the course of the 2015-16 school year. The objective of this school visit program was to allow MMI faculty to interact with faculty at an independent school of their choice and to learn what their peers are doing in the classroom. Each faculty member developed a question that they wanted to get answered during their visit. The questions centered around academics (instruction, assessment, content), student behavior, technology, extra-curricular activities, or advisory topics such as character, etiquette, and leadership. Each trip paired two faculty members together and the duo then shared a 15-20 minute presentation about their visit to MMI’s entire faculty upon their return. Financial assistance A strong financial assistance program ensures that all MMI families are able to enjoy the benefits of our school community. Every MMI family invests in their children’s education to the extent that they are able. Gifts in 2015-16 to Endowed Scholarship Funds totaled $61,934 while gifts to Annual Scholarship Funds amounted to $45,675. Monies donated from area businesses to our scholarship program through The Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program (EITC) and The Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit Program (OSTC) totaled $369,455!
Field trips MMI encourages our students to cultivate their love of learning wherever they go. Facility, Classroom and Technology Improvements To enhance learning outcomes for our students, your gifts contributed to investments in the school’s operation, emerging technology and classroom resources which all better our academic and co-curricular programs. • The Class of 2016 allocated their class gift monies towards a new charging table for laptops, tablets and cell phones in the Coxe Commons. Additional charging stations were purchased with annual fund resources. • Outside of the Joseph A. Turri ’45 Library and Learning Center, new display cases were installed to house Native American artifacts that Dr. Philip McHale ’58 and Ms. Linda Tishko donated to the school. Dr. McHale acquired many of the artifacts and artwork during his 13 years as Director of the Native American Center of Excellence Consortium for Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City. Funds from Dr. McHale and Ms. Tishko also helped build the extensive display cases to showcase these items along with many other historical MMI artifacts and archival materials. • Several MMI classrooms were refreshed over the summer months. Fourteen chalkboards in eight different classroom areas were replaced with white boards, and new carpeting was installed in the music area.
staff members and custom built by MMI students over the summer months. • To create an enhanced learning environment for our students, MMI spent the last year introducing Canvas by Instructure as our Learning Management System. Canvas is an easy-to-use, cloudbased system that connects all the digital tools and resources teachers use into one simple place. • Subscription resources that continue to be made available to our community include: TrendMicro (web filtering software), Socrative (interactive testing tool with the students using handheld devices to answer questions), Doceri (wireless whiteboard system using the iPad), Turnitin.com (an anti-plagiarism service that improves the student writing cycle), Naviance (a college planning software to assist students with the college search), and RenWeb and ParentsWeb (MMI’s internet-based school management system). • MMI purchased live streaming hardware and software. The new equipment was used to livestream graduation and the 8th grade promotion ceremony in May on a test basis, and will be used for live streaming more student events in the upcoming year.
• A projector and screen were installed for use in The Joseph A. Turri ’45 Library and Learning Center. • New rain gutters were installed on the gym and science wing. • New computers were purchased for faculty and New display cases were built outside the Joseph A. Turri ’45 Library and Learning Center through a generous donation from Dr. Philip McHale ‘58 and Ms. Linda Tishko. At right, new desks and chairs were purchased for the Mid School STEM classroom.
Art program Your gifts inspire the creativity in every MMI student by supporting our art program that stimulates the growth of artistic perception, creative expression, aesthetics and cultural awareness. This past year, many new projects were introduced across the art program. Advanced Art 1 & 2 provided students instruction on how to screen print and expand their ceramic techniques. Tenth grade students experienced casting botanicals with plaster and sculpting drinking vessels out of clay. Ninth graders made digital art, while the eighth graders created torn paper collages of famous artist’s paintings. The seventh grade students made Keith Haring-inspired stickers and created Native American Story Beads from clay complete with a simulated “campfire” so they could tell their stories. Mrs. Lisa Ferry also created a wishing tree and an art center in her room where students can engage once they have completed their assigned project. Thanks to your generosity, MMI is continually able to upgrade and increase our art supplies to encourage further experimentation in areas such as ceramics, mixed media and screen printing. Art students now have access to ceramic sculpting.

Performing arts Your contributions cultivate our students’ talents by supporting the performing arts program at MMI. Annual fund monies have been used to expand this area in leaps and bounds over the past few years. Instrumental students perform annually at The CAN DO Christmas Concert while band students take part in the Marywood Wind Band Celebrations. Additionally, students qualified and participated in Pennsylvania Music Educators Association’s (PMEA) District 9 Orchestra and Band Festivals, with one student advancing to PMEA Regional Orchestra. Our talented musicians participated in the Pennsylvania Arts Institute Summer Program while middle school instrumental students played in both Band Fest and String Fest. The world-famous Wister Quartet met with students in the fall to get composition input for the jointly-played music pieces for
their evening community concert in the spring. This was the 13th consecutive year that the Wister Quartet’s visit has been funded by the Annual Fund. Annual donations this year have enhanced the music program at MMI by making music notation software available, purchasing full-sized violas, new music stands and a conductor’s podium. On the MMI stage, the fall season brought the Upper School Drama Club presentation of, “An Evening of One Act Comedies”. In the spring, MMI’s Prepper Playhouse charmed audiences with the all-school musical, “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast.” Choral-style hanging microphones have been added to the athletic and drama complex stage to enhance student performances and two new portable LED follow spotlights help to illuminate our wonderful student actors, singers and musicians.
Athletics Physical education and athletics is an important part of every MMI student’s education. Annual Fund gifts foster the good sport in every MMI student by supporting their athletic development through the offerings of 17 teams across the grades. We currently have 12 teams competing at the Varsity level along with five mid-school offerings. The seventh Annual Jake Kislan ’56 Memorial Golf Tournament raises money every June to directly help the athletics program with annual donations.
were resurfaced and repainted with a new color scheme this summer. Practices are already underway on the refurbished courts! Additionally, MMI completed upgraded field drainage on the baseball and softball fields which has made the fields more playable within 24 hours of a major rainstorm.
The MMI Athletic Field Building is under construction and will accommodate a concession stand, restrooms and storage space at our field complex. Construction began on August 15 and is slated to be completed in mid-September. • Through the generosity of our alumni, parents and MMI’s extended community, this year’s Annual Fund raised $1,855,727 in support of school programs and operations. • MMI’s planned giving society is The Timber Society, an organization of individuals committed to the future support of MMI. This past year, MMI received $1,029,906 in donations as MMI alumni and friends have embraced planned giving as a mechanism to support the school. • Area businesses donating to MMI Scholarships through Pennsylvania’s two tax credit programs (EITC and OSTC) gave $369,455 this past year! Our scholarship program has received in excess of $3 million since this program’s inception in 2005. • Annual giving to MMI’s Endowed Scholarships and Funds more than doubled since 2014-15, totaling $61,934. • The Dennis Clarke Mock Trial Endowed Fund, The Thomas and Mary-Lee Hood Endowed Fund for Faculty Development, The Anna Lesser and John Evancho Endowed Scholarship and The MMI Parent Faculty Organization Endowed Scholarship were established this past year! • The estate of Joseph A. Turri ’45 donated $1,000,000 to establish The Beniamino and Ernesta Turri Endowed Senior Faculty Chair in Language of the Luzerne Foundation. This faculty chair will be funded for the first time in the 2016-17 school year and will be held by Gabriela Moustardas, MMI’s World Language Department Chair and German Instructor. Income from this fund will be designated annually for salary, benefits, and professional development. • MMI had 722 total donors to the Annual Fund! • First-time donors generated $13,405 in Annual Fund revenue stemming from 98 donors. • MMI currently has 1,848 alumni and their donations comprised $1,136,105 of the Annual Fund (including bequests). • MMI’s oldest living alumni, Mr. C. Cassard Kaesemeyer ’31, made his Annual Fund donation again this past year at age 102 illustrating his dedication to his alma mater! Mr. Angelo Roman ’39 and Mr. Clyde Bell ‘43 supported the school too! • The four alumni from 1944 garnered donations from Mr. Pasquale DiSpirito ’44, Mr. Franklin Wenzer ’44 and Mr. Neal Wood Jr. ’44 and had a 75% participation rate in the Annual Fund.
• The alumni classes of the 1950’s continued to lead the charge in participation in the Annual Fund for the third consecutive year. The Class of 1954 had a 60% participation rate, while the Class of 1955 tallied a participation rate of 54%. The Classes of 1951, 1958 and 1963 all had a 44% participation rates. Alumni participation as a whole was at 19%. • The Class of 1976 raised the most money with $33,559 in gifts. Also above the $10,000 giving threshold were the Class of 1958 ($15,665), the Class of 1979 ($14,790), the Class of 1980 ($15,200), the Class of 1982 ($14,025), and the Class of 1995 ($15,250). • MMI received more than $27,110 in gifts-in-kind last year! • The Grandparents’ Club was formed in 2011 to pay tribute to MMI grandparents and great grandparents who invest in the education of their grandchildren every year with a minimum gift of $100 to the Annual Fund. There are currently 46 members of this club. • The Black Diamond Society was founded in August of 2012, honoring lifetime giving of $100,000 or more. It is MMI’s most prestigious donor society. There are 41 members of this society who have continuously invested in MMI. Their commitment to our school has been unparalleled and we are grateful for their continued support!

THE MMI BLACK DIAMOND SOCIETY Lifetime giving of $100,000 or more is required for recognition in MMI’s most prestigious donor society. The Black Diamond Society was created in 2012 to honor those individuals and organizations who have generously supported MMI Preparatory School throughout the years. It is MMI’s most prestigious donor society and includes benefactors whose lifetime giving to MMI surpasses the $100,000 mark. There are currently 41 members of the Black Diamond Society. A great part of our MMI legacy revolves around the “black diamond” or anthracite coal. Black Diamonds burn the most steadily, cleanly, and longest of all coal. The Black Diamond was the most treasured type of coal, just like the members of the Black Diamond Society at MMI are our most respected donors. THE MMI PLANNED GIVING SOCIETY The Timber Society is an organization of individuals committed to the future support of MMI Preparatory School. The name of the society is derived from the wooden supports that were used in the deep mines to support the roof, as well as the earth above it. The “timbers” allowed the miners to move forward in their quest of anthracite coal as they earned a living and fueled the industrial revolution. The symbol for the Timber Society is the White Oak (Quercus alba), which is native to the eastern United States and was harvested for use as “timbers.” At maturity it can reach 100 feet in height and is a wide-spreading specimen whose leaves turn rich purple and wine in the autumn. The large tree provides shade and beauty as it grows. The “timbers” permitted the deep mines to be used to extract the anthracite coal from its beds deep below the surface. The “timbers” continued to serve the people above, long after the miners completed their work. The Timber Society recognizes individuals who have so thoughtfully and generously provided for MMI’s financial future through planned gifts. Through their foresight, they will continue to support the work being done by MMI well into the future.
