Dear Friends, Greetings and best wishes to all alumni, family, and friends of the MMI Preparatory community! On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to thank you for your continued support of your school.

Excitement this year came with the crack of the bat as the boys’ baseball team captured the District 2 Class A championship title and went on to become the first baseball team in school history to reach the state playoffs. Congratulations to the team, coaches, and parents and to all of you who were in the stands cheering our boys on!

Not to be outdone, achievement in academics saw 35 seniors graduate with $6.6 million in merit scholarships and awards for their post-graduate educations. Congratulations to our seniors, their parents, and MMI’s terrific faculty!

The hard work and dedication of our students both on and off the field of play is stellar. Their success is dependent upon the commitment of our faculty and staff as well as the generosity and support of our donors. Students, faculty, staff, and donors work together in concert to help to make the MMI experience ripe for the development of future leaders. Thank you for your continued efforts and support of MMI! “We are all capable of greatness.”

Dear MMI Family, A fellow educator recently tweeted a 2012 Nike commercial that’s now on YouTube. You can see the video on our website at www.mmiprep.org/greatness or by scanning the QR code at right. To provide a quick synopsis, an unathletic, solitary young man is running, slowly and awkwardly but with obvious determination down a country road while a voice talks about how greatness must be achieved. It is a powerful video with a strong message for everyone, especially young people. Greatness is something that anyone can achieve with effort, support, and encouragement. Don’t judge greatness by what you first see. Look for the heart inside.

As I watched the solitary runner in the video, I thought about the support network behind him.

Running, like many things in life, is thought to be a lonely endeavor. However, hidden just over the knoll behind the runner is likely a host of people whose support made his journey possible. These people are unseen and may prefer anonymity.

We have a great support network at MMI to maximize each student’s potential. Some are visible daily, such as our students’ parents and family, who provide support and encouragement. In many cases, they make significant financial sacrifices for their sons and daughters to attend MMI. Our faculty, staff, and coaches devote unbelievable amounts of time and energy to work with our students to get them to recognize and commit to reaching their own personal greatness. They care deeply for our students. They challenge them while providing encouragement and support. They are the backbone upon which our great program is built.

But many of our students’ supporters take a less visible role, often just over the knoll. This report contains a long list of people who have supported MMI as we develop our students’ foundation for greatness. Some contributed to scholarships to make an MMI education available to any student. Some provided financial support for meaningful programs such as our annual Wister Quartet visit. Some make new facilities possible, like the Joseph A. Turri ’45 Library and Learning Center. Many, many contribute faithfully, yet anonymously to our Annual Fund, ensuring we support this and future generations of MMI students. Your annual generosity is not only recognized and appreciated; rather, it also inspires us.

We are all capable of greatness. Thanks to your support, now and in the future, MMI will continue to build each student’s foundation to help that student achieve his or her individual greatness.

donations impact MMI

Unrestricted gifts to the Annual Fund support virtually every aspect of school life.

Once again the generous contributions of the MMI family and friends resulted in a highly successful Annual Fund Campaign in 2013-14, raising a total of $755,759. Faculty professional development, student financial aid, academic materials, field trips, athletic team equipment, and music and art supplies are just some of the ways your dollars go to work immediately and reach every corner of MMI’s campus.

Financial assistance A strong financial assistance program ensures that all MMI families are able to enjoy the benefits of our school community. Every MMI family invests in their children’s education to the extent that they are able and therefore contributes to the overall financial health of the school.

This past year, MMI awarded $841,200 in scholarships to 53% of the student body. The average need-based award was $6,421 per student. MMI also gave the $1,000 Academic Excellence Award to 79 students for a total of $79,000 in merit-based scholarships.

Professional development Meaningful professional development opportunities equip our forward-minded learning community with the tools necessary to offer the best possible education for every MMI student.

Countless webinars were viewed this past year as technology advances allow the learning to come to us at MMI. Technology and classroom improvements To enhance learning outcomes for our students, your gifts contributed to investments in the school’s operation, emerging technology, and classroom resources, which all better our academic and co-curricular programs.

• Early this summer, a newly redesigned and upgraded website for the school was launched to foster better communication within our community. Check us out at www.mmiprep.org.

• Our science department has added a new weather station, centrifuge, glassware, various sensors and probes, an O2 Gas meter, a colorimeter, LabQuest 2, and Logger Pro 3 software and a gel electrophoresis kit through annual fund donations.

• All faculty requests for iPads have been fulfilled through continued technology purchases. MMI faculty

members are actively using their iPads as standard equipment in both classroom administration capacities and for instructional purposes.

• Technology classes were able to integrate video into their studies thanks to a gift-in-kind donation of high-end video equipment and annual fund dollars used to purchase other necessities such as a green screen.

• Subscription resources that continue to be made available to our community include: Qwizdom (interactive testing tool with the students using handheld devices to answer questions), Nearpod (a service where the students can interact with the teacher’s presentations), Doceri (wireless whiteboard system using the iPad to create screens that can be projected), Turnitin.com (an antiplagiarism service that improves the

student writing cycle), Naviance (a college planning software to assist students with the college search and application process along with extensive career assessment tools), Moodle (MMI’s virtual learning environment), and RenWeb and ParentsWeb (MMI’s internet-based school management system).

• The MMI Parent Faculty Organization made a total gift of $9,000 to MMI this year as a result of their fundraising efforts with $5,000 going toward their endowed scholarship and $4,000 to a capital purchase for the school!

• The Class of 2014 donated a series of raised-bed gardens in the Kahler Courtyard as their class gift. These gardens will grow food for usage in our kitchen, as well as science and health curriculums.

Performing arts Your contributions cultivate our students’ talents by supporting the performing arts program at MMI. Annual fund monies have been used to expand this area in leaps and bounds by adding instruments, music stands, microphones, and sheet music collections to our resources. Our string and chorale students perform annually in our holiday concert and at Spring Festival. In 2013-14, MMI’s Glee Club sang at the CAN DO Community Christmas in Hazleton while the Chamber Ensemble played at Hazleton Area’s Summer Garden Party. The world-famous Wister Quartet came to campus twice this year thanks to the Annual Fund. The Quartet met with students in the fall to get composition input for the jointly played music pieces for their evening community concert in February.

Individual students competed at the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association District and Regional String and Band Festivals. On the stage, MMI’s Prepper Playhouse performed “You Can’t Take it with You” and the musical “How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying.”

Athletics

Physical education and athletics are an important part of every MMI student’s education.

Annual Fund gifts foster the good sport in every MMI student by supporting their athletic development through the offerings of 17 teams across the grades. In 2014-15, MMI will add a mid-school soccer program. The sixth Annual Jake Kislan ’56 Memorial Golf Tournament raises money via the Annual Fund to directly help the athletics program.

This past June, we raised $7,053 and generated $17,401 in gifts-in-kind from MMI friends and area businesses! Annual fund dollars also purchased gear for our robust Physical Education program, including brand new floor hockey equipment.

Art program

Your gifts inspire creativity in every MMI student by supporting our art program that stimulates the growth of artistic perception, creative expression, aesthetics and cultural awareness. The annual MMI Art Walk in April showcases individual and collaborative work by our young artists. This year, many new projects were introduced across the art program. Tenth-grade students worked on Tim Burton-inspired trees and a Keith Haring Mural. Ninth-graders made Matt Seesaw creatures while the eighth-graders created Monet-styled watercolor paintings. The seventh-grade students made Tim Burtoninspired monsters and created Native American totem poles out of recycled materials.

Mrs. Lisa Ferry also created a tapestry table in her room, where students can stitch once they have completed their assigned project. It is a collaborative piece and when completed, it is hung from the ceiling in the art room before students begin work on a new tapestry. Thanks to your generosity, MMI is continually able to upgrade and increase our art supplies to encourage further experimentation in areas such as ceramics, mixed media, and screen printing.

• Through the generosity of our alumni, parents and MMI’s extended community, this year’s Annual Fund raised $755,759 in support of school programs and operations. This is an increase of over $25,000 from last year and our highest total of the past six years.

• The Black Diamond Society was founded in August of 2012, honoring lifetime giving of $100,000 or more.

It is MMI’s most prestigious donor society. There are 31 members of this society who have continuously invested in MMI. Their commitment to our school has been unparalleled and we are grateful for their continued support.

• Giving to MMI’s Endowed Scholarships doubled in 2013-14 to $47,419.

• MMI had 782 total donors to the Annual Fund, an increase of 130 donors over the past four years.

• First-time donors reached an all-time high as 142 people pledged their support for the first time. These gifts accounted for $36,822 of this past year’s Annual Fund totals.

• Alumni giving comprised $128,302 of the Annual Fund, an increase from last year of over $20,000. MMI currently has 1,807 living alumni.

• MMI’s oldest living alumnus, Mr. C. Cassard Kaesemeyer ’31, once again contributed to the Annual Fund, illustrating his longstanding dedication to his alma mater.

Mr. Kaesemeyer became a centenarian as he turned 100 years old on February 26, 2014.

• The alumni from the 1950s led the charge in participation in the Annual Fund. The Class of 1954 had a 60% participation

rate, while the Classes of 1958 and 1955 tallied participation rates of 51% and 50%, respectively.

Alumni participation as a whole was at 22%.

• The Class of 1964 raised the most money with $26,937 in gifts! Also above the $10,000 giving threshold were the Class of 1976 ($21,450), the Class of 1982 ($11,302), and the Class of 1970 ($10,225).

• Gifts from MMI current and past parents grew to $36,224, an increase of $7,500 from three years ago.

• MMI’s planned giving society is The Timber Society, an organization of individuals committed to the future support of MMI. The name of the society is derived from the wooden supports that were used in the deep mines to support the roof, as well as the earth above it. The Timber Society currently boasts 65 members.

• MMI received over $18,355 in gifts-in-kind, an increase in gifts-in-kind of over $3,000 from last year.

• Businesses donating to MMI scholarships through Pennsylvania’s two tax credit programs (EITC and OSTC) gave $355,855 this past year. Our scholarship program has received in excess of $2.3 million from area businesses since this program’s inception in 2005.

• The Grandparents’ Club was formed in 2011 to pay tribute to MMI grandparents and greatgrandparents who invest in the education of their grandchildren every year with a minimum gift of $100 to the Annual Fund.

There are currently 29 members of this society.

THE MMI BLACK DIAMOND SOCIETY Lifetime giving of $100,000 or more is required for recognition in MMI’s most prestigious donor society.

The Black Diamond Society was created in 2012 to honor those individuals who have generously supported MMI Preparatory School throughout the years. It is MMI’s most prestigious donor society and includes benefactors whose lifetime giving to MMI surpasses the $100,000 mark. There are currently 31 members of the Black Diamond Society.

A great part of our MMI legacy revolves around the “black diamond” or anthracite coal. Black Diamonds burn the most steadily, cleanly, and longest of all coal. The Black Diamond was the most treasured type of coal, just like the members of the Black Diamond Society at MMI are our most respected donors.

Through the Black Diamond Society, the school honors the leadership and extraordinary support of these individuals who provide a foundation of financial support for both the current and the future student body at MMI.

Donors to The Campaign for MMI gather for the campaign wrap-up celebration inside the Joseph A. Turri ’45 Library and Learning Center in November 2013.

On October 17, MMI celebrated the closing of The Campaign for MMI “A foundation for success…A promise for our future.” The campaign, which began in 2009, focused on three areas of growth: building our endowment, construction of new outdoor athletic fields, and the building of the Joseph A. Turri ’45 Library and Learning Center. The campaign raised just over $4.4 million from 282 committed donors! While the campaign has officially come to a close, we would like to acknowledge all of our donors who have continued to make gifts towards their campaign pledges during 2013-14. Many donors made multi-year commitments to this campaign which will extend into future years. While these gifts are not included in our Annual Fund Donor Report, they are equally important to the future of our school. Thank you!

The MMI Planned Giving Society

The Timber Society is an organization of individuals committed to the future support of MMI Preparatory School.

The name of the society is derived from the wooden supports that were used in the deep mines to support the roof, as well as the earth above it. The “timbers” allowed the miners to move forward in their quest of anthracite coal as they earned a living and fueled the industrial revolution.

The symbol for the Timber Society is the White Oak (Quercus alba), which is native to the eastern United States and was harvested for use as “timbers.” At maturity it can reach 100 feet in height and is a wide-spreading specimen whose leaves turn rich purple and wine in the autumn.

The large tree provides shade and beauty as it grows. The “timbers” permitted the deep mines to be used to extract the anthracite coal from its beds deep below the surface. The “timbers” continued to serve the people above, long after the miners completed their work.

The Timber Society recognizes individuals who have so thoughtfully and generously provided for MMI’s financial future through planned gifts.

Through their foresight, they will continue to support the work being done by MMI well into the future.
