Dear friends of MMI, MMI’s success is made possible by the hard work and dedication of many people, including our faculty, staff, and, of course, our parents and students. In these pages we celebrate a very special group of individuals and organizations, whose efforts are part of a long MMI tradition of service to the community: our donors. Just as MMI owes its existence to its founders, Eckley B. and Sophia G. Coxe, its ability to survive and flourish today is dependent on the generosity of its donors, who are the spiritual heirs of that visionary couple. MMI has been committed to meeting the educational needs of area residents since its earliest days as a night school for coal miners. While the curriculum has evolved into that of a world-class college preparatory school, a crucial element of the original mission remains: that MMI is open to students who are willing to work and who meet the school’s high standards, regardless of their ability to pay. Your support makes it possible for MMI to maintain a generous financial assistance program that provides aid to more than half of our students. And it also helps to fund programs and improvements that benefit the student body as a whole. The school depends on your support, and we are deeply grateful for it. Head of School Dear MMI Family, At the time of this writing, our country and other areas are facing a tremendous amount of rebuilding. The aftereffects of hurricanes Harvey & Irma, as well as wild fires in the west, have caused a multitude of people to band together in order to help devastated areas recover and rebuild. The impact of these natural disasters can be felt up and down the eastern seaboard, from coast to coast, and in our school community. For me, it is a strong reminder that it is in our human nature to act with speed and resolve to comfort our fellow man. Our students, faculty and staff worked quickly to do their small part in giving hope to those recently affected by these disasters. Their action prompts me to note that kindness, generosity, and good stewardship are necessary even when all is right in the world. Your kindness and generosity have helped MMI continue our mission of preparing students for college and beyond. While the impact of your donations may not be immediately tangible, it would not be possible to continue the MMI tradition without them. In the past year, your generosity has allowed us to add five new endowed scholarships, grant more than $920,000 in need-based financial aid to more than 50% of our students, continue the professional development of our caring faculty and staff, and make classroom and programmatic improvements that will continue to benefit students in the years to come. Through the good stewardship of our Board of Directors, faculty, and staff, every dollar, minute-of-time, or gift-in-kind you give to MMI is dedicated to fulfilling our founders’ vision of providing a quality education to all area students who have the drive and desire regardless of financial ability. Those students go out into the world knowing how important it is to be kind, generous, and good stewards in their everyday lives. It is through your support that many of them will go on to be the first line of help for others in need. I cannot thank you enough for your continued support of MMI and all we do. • MMI currently has 1,901 living alumni and their donations comprised $1,440,860 of the Annual Fund (including bequests).

• Through the generosity of our alumni, parents and MMI’s extended community, this past year’s Annual Fund raised $2,051,260 in support of school programs and operations. • MMI’s planned giving society is The Timber Society, an organization of individuals committed to the future support of MMI. This past year, MMI received $1,313,310 in donations as MMI alumni and friends have embraced planned giving as a mechanism to support the school with gifts to our endowment. • Area businesses donating to MMI need-based scholarships through Pennsylvania’s two tax credit programs (EITC and OSTC) gave $268,900 this past year! Our scholarship program has received in excess of $3.3 million since the state program’s inception in 2005. • Annual giving to MMI’s Endowed Scholarships and Funds has more than doubled since 2014-15, totaling $61,718 this past year. • Five new endowed scholarships and funds were established this past year including: The Bigelow Family Endowed Scholarship, The Matilda A. Turri Brown & Adele Turri Hanna Senior Faculty Chair Fund of the Luzerne Foundation, The Athena S. Ford ‘01 Endowed Fund for Community Service, The Lisa A. Merlo ‘80 Endowed Fund for the Arts, and The Benjamin P. Turri Athletic Endowment Fund of the Luzerne Foundation. • MMI had 709 total donors to the Annual Fund! • First-time donors generated $38,094 in Annual Fund revenue stemming from 100 donors. This is an increase of more than $25,000 in first gifts from the year prior. • The average gift made by individual donors to the unrestricted portion of MMI’s Annual Fund was $231 (does not include business or foundation gifts).

• MMI’s oldest living alumni, Mr. Edward Sharp ‘36, continues to support The Edward ’36 and Lorraine Sharp Endowed Scholarship with his annual gift, a trend he has followed for the last 16 consecutive years illustrating his dedication to his alma mater! Mr. Angelo Roman ’39, Mr. Manfred Mason ‘42 and Mr. Clyde Bell ‘43 supported the school too! • The alumni classes of the 1950s continued to lead the charge in participation in the Annual Fund for the third consecutive year. The Class of 1955 had a 54% participation rate, while the Classes of 1951 and 1954 tallied a participation rate of 50%. Alumni participation as a whole was at 16%. • The Class of 1995 raised the most money with $21,155 in gifts. • Also above the $10,000 giving threshold were the Class of 1955 ($12,450), Class of 1979 ($14,668), and the Class of 1980 ($15,327). The Class of 1984 gave $9,905, the Class of 1960 tallied $9,700 in gifts and the Class of 1962 donated $8,758. • MMI received more than $32,787 in gifts-in-kind last year! • The Grandparents’ Club was formed in 2011 to pay tribute to MMI grandparents and great-grandparents who invest in the education of their grandchildren every year with a minimum gift of $100 to the Annual Fund. There are currently 46 members of this society. • The Black Diamond Society was founded in August of 2012, honoring lifetime giving of $100,000 or more. It is MMI’s most prestigious donor society. There are 42 members of this society who have continuously invested in MMI. Their commitment to our school has been unparalleled and we are grateful for their continued support!

Gifts to the Annual Fund support virtually every aspect of school life. The generous contributions of the MMI community resulted in a highly successful Annual Fund Campaign in 2016-17, raising a total of $2,051,260 which includes more than $1.3 million in planned giving bequests. Faculty professional development, student financial aid, academic materials and supplies, field trips, athletic team equipment, and music and art supplies are just some of the ways your dollars go to work immediately and reach every corner of MMI’s campus.

Financial assistance A strong financial assistance program ensures that all MMI families are able to enjoy the benefits of our school community regardless of their ability to pay. Every MMI family invests in their children’s education to the extent that they are able and more than 50% of our students receive financial aid. Gifts in 2016-17 to Endowed Scholarship Funds totaled $61,718 while gifts to Annual Scholarship Funds amounted to $22,500. Monies donated from area businesses to our scholarship program through the Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program (EITC) and the Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit Program (OSTC) totaled $268,900.

Field trips MMI encourages our students to cultivate their love of learning wherever they go. Facility, classroom and technology Improvements To enhance learning for our students, your gifts contributed to investments in the school’s overall operation, facility and classroom upgrades, emerging technology and classroom resources, which continually better our academic and cocurricular programs. • The Class of 2017 allocated their class gift monies towards six new printers that are designed for student use and situated throughout the school to accommodate wireless printing. • The MMI Parents Association made a capital gift following a successful year of fundraising that allowed MMI to purchase a new laptop cart with 20 additional laptops for classroom use. • The front gate of the school that leads into the Mildred Kahler Culp Courtyard was automated and the exterior doors on the Ridge Street side of the Coxe Commons were replaced enhancing student security on campus.

• All currently used laptops and the computers in the student lab were upgraded. • There was a complete HVAC control upgrade in the science wing and gymnasium spaces on campus to better regulate MMI’s heating and cooling functions.

Naviance (a college planning software to assist students with the college search)

• A mobile recording and broadcasting studio was created using mixers, amplifiers, speakers, microphones, and equalizers. Students can use this studio to record, playback, mix, edit, and broadcast their music and performances. • Several MMI classrooms were refreshed over the summer months. Art program Your gifts inspire the creativity in every MMI student by supporting our art program, which stimulates the growth of artistic perception, creative expression, aesthetics and cultural awareness. This past year, many new projects were introduced across the art program. Advanced Art 1 & 2 learned how to screen print, sew, and expand their ceramic techniques, and developed a community art project. Tenth grade students experienced casting botanicals with plaster and sculpting drinking vessels out of clay. Ninth graders made digital art, while the eighth graders dove deep into mixed-media techniques. The seventh grade students made Keith Haring inspired stickers and created Native American Story Beads from clay complete with a simulated “campfire” so they could tell their stories. Thanks to your generosity, MMI is continually able to upgrade and increase our art supplies to encourage further experimentation in areas such as ceramics, mixed media and screen-printing. In art class, 8th graders worked on a visual journaling project.

Performing arts Your contributions cultivate our students’ talents by supporting the various performing arts at MMI. In addition to performances at school, MMI’s instrumental and vocal students perform annually at the CANDO Community Christmas Concert and the Freeland Christmas Carol Songfest. Individual students qualified and participated in the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association’s (PMEA) District 9 Orchestra and Band Festivals, with one student in each event advancing to the regional event. Our talented middle school musicians participated in the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association’s (PMEA) String Fest and Chorus Fest. Annual donations this year have enhanced the music program at MMI by facilitating the purchase of musical compositions for in-class instruction and concert repertoire. Also purchased were a new cello rack and additional music stands.

Athletics Physical education and athletics is an important part of every MMI student’s education. Annual Fund gifts foster the good sport in every MMI student by supporting their athletic development through the offerings of 17 teams across the grades. We currently have 12 teams that compete at the varsity level along with five mid-school offerings. The Annual Jake Kislan ’56 Memorial Golf Tournament raises money every June to directly help the athletics program. This past year, MMI completed a field drainage improvement project on our softball fields which has made the fields more playable within 24 hours of a major rainstorm.

The world-famous Wister Quartet met with students in the fall to get composition input for the jointly played music pieces for their evening community concert in the spring. The Quartet debuted the MMI students’ Song for Peace at their professional concert in Philadelphia and incorporated it into their professional repertoire. This was the 14th consecutive year that the Wister Quartet’s visits were funded by a donation to the Annual Fund. During the fall theatre season at MMI, the Upper School Drama Club presented “Another Evening of One Act Comedies” on the cafeteria stage. Audiences were entertained in the spring by the MMI Prepper Playhouse all-school production of “Shrek the Musical.” Portable overhead boom microphones were added to amplify the chorus action on the floor in front of the stage and a new wireless bodypack microphone system was used to assist the lead actors as they sang and danced their way through the fun-filled, musical fairy tale.

THE MMI BLACK DIAMOND SOCIETY Lifetime giving of $100,000 or more is required for recognition in MMI’s most prestigious donor society. The Black Diamond Society was created in 2012 to honor those individuals and organizations who have generously supported MMI Preparatory School throughout the years. It is MMI’s most prestigious donor society and includes benefactors whose lifetime giving to MMI surpasses the $100,000 mark. There are currently 42 members of the Black Diamond Society. A great part of our MMI legacy revolves around the “black diamond” or anthracite coal. Black Diamonds burn the most steadily, cleanly, and longest of all coal. The Black Diamond was the most treasured type of coal, just like the members of the Black Diamond Society at MMI are our most respected donors. THE MMI PLANNED GIVING SOCIETY The Timber Society is an organization of individuals committed to the future support of MMI Preparatory School. The name of the society is derived from the wooden supports that were used in the deep mines to support the roof, as well as the earth above it. The “timbers” allowed the miners to move forward in their quest of anthracite coal as they earned a living and fueled the industrial revolution. The symbol for the Timber Society is the White Oak (Quercus alba), which is native to the eastern United States and was harvested for use as “timbers.” At maturity it can reach 100 feet in height and is a wide-spreading specimen whose leaves turn rich purple and wine in the autumn. The large tree provides shade and beauty as it grows. The “timbers” permitted the deep mines to be used to extract the anthracite coal from its beds deep below the surface. The “timbers” continued to serve the people above, long after the miners completed their work. The Timber Society recognizes individuals who have so thoughtfully and generously provided for MMI’s financial future through planned gifts.
