R K Swamy was one of the early icons of Indian Advertising.

He

was

that

unusual

advertising

professional coming from a very humble background.

His break into the world of advertising happened when he was given a temporary posting at JWT Eastern Limited as a translator from English to Gujarati in 1940 and from then on, there was no looking back for this man of principles and unquestionable integrity. He set up the Chennai branch of JWT in 1955 and built it into a full service agency.

He was instrumental in placing Madras on the advertising radar with his visionary approach and his ability to convince Public Sector Organisations to embrace advertising in a big way.

In 1973 he set up R K Swamy Advertising which has

R K Swamy 1922 - 2003

today grown into a large wide-spectrum marketing services group.

MMA is privileged to bring this Annual Memorial Lecture in his name to remind ourselves of his pioneering spirit.

Shri S Gurumurthy Shri Swaminathan Gurumurthy is a chartered accountant corporate and legal adviser of high standing. He is a well-known counsellor to many corporates on law, finance macro-economic issues. As a professional he has mediated solved some of the most complex corporate issues.

Besides being a professional mentor, he is also a keen academician and has been a Visiting Professor of IIT Bombay on Indian models of Economy, Business, Finance and Management. He is presently the Distinguished Professor of Legal Anthropology in Sastra University in Tanjore.

A keen thinker on geo political and strategic issues, he is the Vice Chairman of the strategic think tank in Delhi, the Vivekananda International Foundation.

Being drawn by larger national interest, in 1993, Shri Gurumurthy undertook a study of the impact of globalisation on an economy and economic and political culture habituated to command economy.

Many of the findings of the study were supported by the World Bank in its World Development Report.

Shri Gurumurthy is highly rated as a journalist for his investigative writings and has ceaselessly campaigned against corruption at high places. Currently, he is Editor of ‘Thuglak’, a powerful socio-political Tamil weekly.

Shri Gurumurthy has always been highly lauded by the media. The Business Baron magazine rated Shri Gurumurthy’s knowledge of economics, finance and accounts as ‘outstanding’. He was rated among 50 most powerful persons in India [Gentleman]; 8th most powerful [Business Baron] and the 30th most powerful person [India Today].
