SYNOPSIS COVID 19 has turned the globe topsy-turvy on an unprecedented scale. We are indeed thankful to the health care professionals who have toiled beyond the call off duty to ensure that health and safety of the citizens. However, Despite the lockdown and preventive measures, owing to its large population, India has earned the dubious distinction of a county with the highest number of Covid cases after USA. Tamil Nadu in general, and Chennai in particular, have been struggling to keep the outbreak under check. Arrival of vaccine seems to be a few months away and lack of adequate medical facilities particularly in small towns and rural areas poses a formidable challenge to the medical fraternity. The lockdown has already affected the Indian economy in a big way and the business community is eagerly waiting to break free and resume normal operations.

Though we are aware that maintaining the social distancing norms and taking due precautions at the work place is be only way forward, there are practical difficulties in adhering to the guidelines, particularly among the uninformed and unorganized sector. This talk which is aimed to provide insights about the pandemic and its impact on the society would also dispel common myths about Covid 19 and dwell on the necessary precautions to be taken. The participants may address the questions to the speaker not only about the dreaded “Corona�, but about the general well-being, healthy life style, nutrition and the importance of physical exercise.

PROFILE Prof.Dr.R.Narasimhan MD FRCP(E) FRCP(G) FCCP (USA) Dr.R.Narasimhan is a world renowned interventional pulmonologist in Chennai. He is currently the senior consultant and heads the department of EBUS and Bronchial Thermoplasty Services at Apollo Hospitals, Chennai.

He is also the Chairman of the Respiratory Research Foundation of India.

It was in 1990 that he joined Apollo Hospitals as senior consultant in the department of Respiratory Medicine. Dr.Narasimhan had a keen interest in interventions from the beginning and has over 20000 bronchoscopies to his credit. He underwent a training in lung transplantation in the prestigious University of Pittsburgh Medical Centre, Pennsylvania.

He is one of the very few persons doing endobronchial ultrasound in the country. He was the first pulmonologist to start Polysomnography in the city of Chennai. He was conferred the title of Adjunct Professor, The Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University and Associate Professor, School of Medicine, University of Queensland, Australia.

It was his vision to start the Respiratory Research Foundation of India back in 2001 as a centre to spread the awareness about various common respiratory illnesses and their treatment. Under his leadership the foundation has made an impact in the social circles as far as respiratory illnesses are concerned.
