Synopsis

Data Science is the new buzz word today! Academic institutions the world over are creating Data Science courses, degrees, institutes or colleges. Students are overwhelmingly seeking data science degrees. Industry and government are seeking to employ data science literate candidates.

In my opinion, an understanding of Data Science is relevant today for all professionals in all application domains, and not only for the emerging population of “Data Scientists” - by being valuable to professionals in improved decision making.

I hope to share my experience with Data Science in recent years in a few application domains, followed by a floor discussion on the why/what/how of Data Science for you

Prof Nalini Ravishanker

Nalini Ravishanker is Professor in the Department of Statistics at the University of Connecticut (UConn), Storrs, https://statistics.uconn.edu.She has been a faculty member at UConn since 1989.

She has a PhD in Statistics and Operations Research from the Stern School of Business, New York University, and a B.Sc. in Statistics from Presidency College, Madras.

She currently serves on UConn’s Steering Committee for the MS in Data Science Program (started in-person in 2022, and also going online from 2023). See https://masters.datascience.uconn.edu/

Nalini has over three decades of academic experience and is passionate about research, teaching and mentoring students in statistics and data science.

Her research productivity includes over 100 publications, two books, and one edited volume - in various topics in methodological and applied statistics and many interdisciplinary domains.

She has taught statistical theory, methods and applications at various levels

She enjoys mentoring students and junior faculty, and promoting the usefulness of data science to industry professionals. She has consulted on statistical topics for different industries, both in the US and India.

She has received several honors and held many editorial positions over the years, and is committed to continually promote statistics and data science as a stepping stone for success in different domains.

Mr Gopi Koteeswaran Co-Founder

Gopi has a history of leading global companies to positions of strength in geographically diverse markets. He began his career as a brand manager at Johnson & Johnson and went on to spearhead the company ’ s Vision Care business in India and Malaysia. In his ten years with J&J, he worked on both consumer and healthcare businesses across Asia and North America. He then joined Philips at its headquarter in Netherlands, as the global head of Strategy and New business development for the business group, Health and Wellness. In 2010, he was named CEO of Philip’s DirectLife, a health and wellness business

In January 2014, Gopi was appointed CEO of LatentView Analytics, a trusted partner to enterprises worldwide, including more than two dozen Fortune 100 companies in the retail, consumer goods, financial services, technology, media, automotive and healthcare industries. Under his leadership, LatentView has won various awards including Frost & Sullivan’s Analytics Company of the year and NASSCOM AI Game Changer Award. Gopi is now a shareholder at LatentView and an investor in multiple DeepTech companies.

Gopi has an Engineering degree from IIT Madras; PGDM from IIM Calcutta and an MBA (President’s list) from IMD, Switzerland. He recently completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School.

Presently he is the Co-Founder of Cardiac Wellness Institute, Dzruptiv.ai and Boostable.
