DOES GDP GROWTH REFLECT THE REAL STATE OF ECONOMY? OCT

Synopsis Even as India has surpassed the UK to become the world's fifth largest economy, there are reports about it reaching the third spot, behind the US and China, not very long from now. While it is saying a lot in terms of industrial and international perspective, what does it mean in real terms for a nation where the numbers of those living 'Below the Poverty Line' (BPL) is said to be increasing. So are the ranks of the unemployed and under-employed, in this hi-tech era, robotics and AI have become the passwords for industrial growth, competitiveness and profit-margins. In the developed world, GDP-linked growth is linked to 'social security', but in India, the government has flagged an early end to what is commonly branded as 'freebies'. The Supreme Court too is now seized of the matter. In the evolving scenario, some economists predict that the bulging numbers of the middle-class, a simultaneous discovery and invention of the Economic Reforms era, is finding it difficult to live up to their own expectations and aspirations. Over time, it is feared that there could be a tapering of the middle-middle class into the lower middle class and the upper middle class, at times, coalescing with the middle-middle.
