The concept of lifelong learning is challenging the old school maxim of frontloading all education. We are seven billion people and have a purpose. As knowledge and skill become the core ability where humans are not in competition with machines, we should be interested in analysing how we use old skills to do new tasks? Or learn, nurture and sustain new skills? What habit patterns help us embrace skill transformation as second nature, like a ‘skill-spider’? That’s the premise of this book.

s y n o p s i s

Human improvements have always been the backbone of inventions that advanced mankind. These were based on both knowledge and skills that we gained from time to time. From basic skills like cooking food, communication and practical learning, to making simple tools, language, scientific and industrial and social skills is the long road travelled by humans. Never before in the past decades has the topic of skills received as widespread attention and debate as now, with dominant opinion equating success with upskilling or reskilling - and failure with stagnant skillsets. We have since introduced machines, and this has changed the scope and source of inventions. The machines did some of our jobs better, faster, and provided relief from the tedium. We carried on the invention further to areas where humans faced barriers in terms of time, distance, complexity, etc. In this period, human skills became subordinate to the human-machine combination. So, we started sharing the source of progress.
